Thank you to the author and TorchLitInk for sending me an ARC to review. All thoughts are my own and are in no way influenced by early access to this title.

This one definitely gave Bridgerton vibes. If you’re missing the show while there’s a wait for the new season I’d recommend maybe picking this one up. While I wasn’t super invented the entire time I still liked the story at its core.

I liked the dynamic between these characters. It was very endearing to see how they both completed one another. But I did feel that there could’ve been a bit more angst and lead up to their relationship.

While I did enjoy this story there were a couple of things that didn't quite work for me. First off, overall how this was written felt a bit bland to me. I can’t really put my finger on what it was, but it just didn’t fully hit for me. Next, I wished that we’d gotten more depth from these characters. While there are things from their backstories that we find out there was just something that held me back from fully connecting with them. I also didn’t love the miscommunication between the main characters. I’m not gonna spoil it but I didn’t love how it was fully resolved in the end. Other than these things I enjoyed this novel.

Read if you like:

- a damaged and flawed mmc
- a sweet and gentle fmc
- dual pov
- strangers with an instant connection
- misunderstanding
- london season
- regency era
- light dom/sub vibes
- medium spice
- happily ever after

Quotes:

“I am yours, Amy. And you are mine. You feel it, do you not?"

“Amelia would be in his arms, warming his bed, caring for his heart.
His heart. That thought pulled him up short.
He couldn't believe he really just thought that, but now that he acknowledged it, he couldn't deny it was the truth. The way he had exposed the bleakness he carried inside himself, his memories, his burdens, and how she had received them all with open arms. Without judgement or blame. The way his chest repeatedly clenched around her in both pain and plea-sure. The ache to have her. Not just her body, but her. To care for her. To deserve her.”

I actually enjoyed this!
It has all the Bridgerton vibes but without leaning into the same story type. The dynamics are slightly different and a bit more interesting. I read the some of the book thinking that’s it? Is it going to be this easy?? And then a plot twist slapped me right across the head 🤣
I had to leave feminism outside the door for the Duke of Birmingham not going to lie.
With a bit more depth to the characters, and a bit more angst and yearning this would have been a solid 5⭐️ for me. Regardless, I had loads of fun, read it in one sitting, and just turned off my brain and enjoyed the ride!

ARC review. Thank you to the author for giving me the chance to read a copy of the book ahead of its launch ♥️

Thank you to @bookedwiththeemilys and K. P. March for the #gifted copy.

3.5⭐️ Overall, this was an easy and enjoyable read. Very much read like a Bridgerton story. Who hasn’t loved those! Miscommunication is very present which isn’t my favorite, but it was tied up and resolved well. I think it would have been interesting if more side characters were involved to flesh out how the rumors started. But, if you like regency romance, Bridgerton vibes, quick chemistry, and a little spice; absolutely give The Mistress a try. Available on Kindle Unlimited!!

This is a typical Romance novel. It features tropes like instance connection and misunderstandings. Sometimes I struggle with those because I just think asking a question could have solved all this. But of course that wouldn’t make for as good a story 😂😂😂.

This has a deeply flawed MMC and an innocent FMC and how they navigate through the courtship. There is a decent amount of spice as well, in parts, though it is not a major theme of the book.

It is interesting and a quick read. If you are a fan of romance novels and especially if you like period books then you should definitely pick this one up.

ARC Review ... may contain spoilers

It's giving all the Bridgerton vibes and I'm here for it. I love the "I'm damaged and no one can love me" MMC and the FMC who sees beyond his flaws.

The Mistress is light on the spice until late in the book so there is a slow burn build up. Seeing the FMC cave in crushed my soul and I wanted to hate the book right there but I held out hope for a FEA ending!

I have 1 thing that kept me from giving 5 stars ... I wanted the story to be longer. I wanted a monster book with all the drama spread out over hundreds and hundreds of pages. The ending felt a little rushed to me.

I loved this historical love story. It definitely gave off bridgerton vibes for sure, with the Duke in this one being just as broken and rough. Not wanting to admit his feelings and having a troubled past. I love the makeshift family that is made between Amelia, her sister and their childhood best friend Thomas after all their parents had passed. This was a very cute romance loved it! I would say it has maybe a .5🌶 on the spicy scale.

Pride & Prejudice meets Bridgerton with a morally grey, messed up and spicy MMC and a sweet, strong, sassy FMC. Miscommunication and misunderstanding tropes abound mixed with the propriety and secrecy of the times made for a highly entertaining and juicy read. Strangers to lovers to enemies to lovers, it was SO good. I loved the dynamic between the FMC and her guardian (what a sweetheart, I want more!) and her sister.
Well written with descriptive language that really transported me to the era. I would gladly read more from this author as this was my first.

I really enjoyed this book and all of it’s characters, I only wish it was longer!

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun, only mildly-angsty historical romance with a central misunderstanding that actually made sense given the time period. It’s an easy read, but still offers some emotional weight, mostly thanks to Amelia, who absolutely carries the story on her very capable shoulders. I love her so much!

Amelia enters the London Season with hope, vulnerability, and the kind of internal strength that made me root for her from the very first page. After meeting Gideon, she's eager to catch his eye. Gideon is complex, sometimes frustrating, and very much a product of his class and upbringing. His growth is slow and clumsy, but it does happen. And their chemistry is amazing.

That said, I struggled to like Gideon. Emotional maturity? We don't know her. He starts the book convinced Amelia is a mistress (based purely on gossip), decides to “steal” her from his friend for himself without clarifying anything, and mostly seems interested in what she can offer him. He doesn’t seem to respect her until it becomes clear she’s looking for a husband. The book tries to explain his behavior through his past (tragic childhood), but honestly? That doesn’t excuse bad behavior, sir.

And yet—I didn’t hate reading about him. He’s complex, frustrating, and very much a product of his class and upbringing. His growth is slow and clumsy, but it does happen. I just don’t think he deserves Amelia.

If you like your historical fiction with drama, tension, and a flawed hero who has to earn his second chance, this is for you!

Thanks so much to 'booked with the emilys' and the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

I was given a free ARC in exchange of an honest review.

The Mistress is a romantic historical fiction with lots of spice of a Duke clouded by his past and a gentle lady. It's straightforward about desires, love at first sight, a she fell first but he fell harder story.

I felt like there was a blurred line between "love" and "obsession" in this story. I felt no character development for both characters -even worse, one of the characters regressed; she was so ready to discard her dignity and social standing to be someone less than she deserved AND I hated that her sister encouraged her to do it.

It's been a while since I've read a historical romance, but I am glad I read this and I enjoyed it a lot.

It did have the feel of Bridgerton and Pride & Prejudice.

Amelia Becham, sweet, gentle, strong, shy and able to look at someone's faults and be able to look past them to forgive, but also show them there qualities of themselves that are there and can still be learned.

Gideon Edwards, dominate, stubborn, strong, damaged and flawed, but he able to see those flaws learn from them and change.

When Amelia and Gideon meet, it's instant attraction and connection. But within that attraction and connection, there is a misconception Gideon thought of Amelia and the relationship they try to build will be hard, heartbreaking, understanding, forgiving, but ultimately filled with love.

Absolutely loved the Gideon and Amelia. Looking for Bridgerton vibes? This is for you!
When you just know someone is for you, you must know right? Since this story takes place when it was not proper for the man to court the female and ask for permission with the guardian, unfortunately there is a HUGE misunderstanding - Gideon that Amelia was the mistress of Thomas (her step brother). Here Amelia thinks he is in love with her and is going to ask her to marry him, but Gideon had a difficult upbringing and never wants to marry, only to have a mistress on the side.

Ultimately, like the Bridgerton series, all is well in love, misunderstandings are set straight and even though Amelia is willing to be his "whore" (I guess that is what mistresses are called back then), she can't live life without him, and he changes his mind with how he sees marriage.

Super cute book, low spice, great love story. Solid 4 star. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you KP March & Torch Lit Ink for a copy of this book.

1. I found the conflict in this book to be totally manufactured.
a. There was never any reason given for Thomas to have been so “secretive” about his close relationship with Lydia and Amelia and their family.
b. Since Thomas and Gideon were such close friends, there was certainly no reason for Thomas to keep something so innocent a secret from him.
c. It was so common with men of that social circle to have mistresses, they would have been open about it with their friends; Gideon would probably have known who Thomas had as a mistress and perhaps even socialized with them along with his own mistress.
d. Since it was “well known” that Amelia had been very close with Thomas’ entire family for “many years”, there was no logical reason for "everyone" to assume she was his mistress.
e. If it was so commonly believed that Amelia was Thomas’ mistress, I find it highly doubtful that Thomas was completely unaware of this.
f. If Thomas was planning on ending his “arrangement” with his mistress, and wanted Gideon to take her off his hands, he would have been quite frank with Gideon about it. He certainly wouldn’t have been worried about “propriety”.
g. Thomas certainly would certainly NOT have taken his mistress and the woman that he intended to take as his next mistress to London to “join the season” or paraded them in front of the Ton at balls and garden parties.
2. Amelia had no problem going off into the gardens with Gideon alone at multiple balls and parties and allowing him to touch and kiss her but she was hesitant to allow Gideon to call on her without a chaperone present?
3. Amelia may have been innocent but she wasn’t stupid and there is no way she would have gone off in the garden for a “tryst” with Gideon twice so openly in front of the ton.
4. There was NO reason for Gideon to say something so openly crude and cruel to Amelia; men had more respect than that even for their mistresses.
5. After Gideon realized how wrong he had been about Amelia and how brutally he had treated her and yet did nothing about it, I was done.

Omg, this was such a cute read! A few readers have said it’s like Pride & Prejudice meets Bridgerton and totally agree.

The Mistress is K.P. March’s debut novel, set in 1808 England. It follows Amelia, our sweet and strong FMC, who is content with her life. She has her sister, Lydia, and her ‘brother’, Thomas, that keeps her busy. What more could she want? Well, she wishes to be a wife and have a family. Enter Gideon, our damaged and flawed Duke of Birmingham.

From the moment they meet, it’s an instant connection and sparks fly. And it’s noticed by Thomas. So at his urging, Amelia agrees to participate in the London Season, in hopes of receiving a proposal from Gideon. After a few balls and stolen moments, Amelia did receive a proposal from Gideon, but not what she was expecting.

Poor Gideon has been through it. His father was not a kind man and was cruel to his mother. Because of this, he grew up jaded and a non-believer in love. So what does he ask Amelia for? To be his mistress, knowing that’s what he can give her and based on what he’s heard about her. Amelia is taken aback, confused at why he thinks she’s done this in the past but also because she saw Gideon for more, her husband. Does Amelia agree to this even though it’s not what she truly desires? Or could Gideon let go of his past to claim a future with Amelia he never thought possible? Read to find out!

Amelia and Gideon are too cute and lovable. There were a few miscommunication moments that I definitely screamed at because I just wanted them to fully talk through what each were thinking. And as Amelia and Gideon helped each other grow/ show that they are deserving of true love and worth, did not tear up during a certain confession scene.

This was my first book from K.P. and can’t wait to read more from her! Thank you K.P. and Torch Lit Ink for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. Pre-order this today, releasing April 10th!

A heartfelt thank you to @authorkpmarch and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted book.

This debut novel is an absolute gem! Set against the captivating backdrop of the Regency era, it beautifully weaves the enchanting romance between Amelia and the Duke of Birmingham, Gideon. From their first encounter, the chemistry is undeniable. However, Gideon’s tumultuous past casts a shadow over their budding connection, leading to a Season brimming with misunderstandings and emotional turmoil.

The author excels in recreating the rich atmosphere of the time, immersing readers in a world filled with tension and longing. The dynamic between Amelia and Gideon is particularly compelling, illustrating how their love helps them discover a sense of completeness. Through Amelia’s acceptance and forgiveness, Gideon embarks on a transformative journey of healing.

The dual perspective between Amelia and Gideon was masterfully executed, allowing their emotions to unfold in a way that deeply engaged the reader. This narrative choice not only enriched our understanding of their individual thoughts but also enhanced the emotional intensity of their connection.

I was also captivated by the theme of found family, beautifully depicted in Amelia’s close bond with her sister and their childhood friend Thomas after the loss of their parents.

While I typically find assumptions and misunderstandings frustrating, I found myself rooting for Amelia and Gideon to confront their challenges and communicate openly.

If you adore romance, the intricacies of the Regency era, themes of family, and stories of redemption, this book is an absolute must-read. Don’t miss out—it’s available now!

Star Rating: 4 stars

A special thank you goes to Torch Lit Ink for providing me with a copy of this book. Please know that this does not influence my rating or thoughts on the book itself.

tw: parental death, toxic relationship, alcohol

So this book had one of my most disliked tropes—the misunderstanding trope. Normally, I cannot stand this trope because I deal with so much of it in my daily life, so I don't want to read about it. But this book. This book changed my mind on it. This is how you do the misunderstanding trope in a way that doesn’t infuriate my soul. I was so surprised with myself when I discovered this trope was in this book, and I was still very much enjoying the book. After I finished the book, I kind of just sat there and realized that I enjoyed a book with the misunderstanding trope.

I think the characters were what helped me enjoy this book so much. We have two main ones: Amelia and Gideon. Amelia was so great. I loved the bond she had with her sister. Anytime a book has a sisterly bond, it’s already a four-star read for me. They understood each other in a way that my sister and I do. As for the other main character, Gideon, my heart just hurt for him. He had a very poor upbringing, and I just wanted to give him a big hug. He needed that and so much more.

I also think the love story between Gideon and Amelia sold me on this book. The love they have for each other made me swoon. I found myself kicking my feet at times because they were just too cute. They complemented each other in so many ways. I appreciated that Amelia didn’t try to fix Gideon either. She was there to listen and never judge. She helped him work through the torment he was going through, and that made me love her all the more.

Overall, this was such a heartwarming story. I truly fell in love with Amelia and Gideon. I fell in love with how they met, their courtship, and their happily ever after. Everything about this book was just lovely. It dealt with hard topics, but it dealt with them in such a way that it wasn’t tough to read. I hope we get a story with Amelia’s sister and her lover because I am very interested in them as well.

Brief synopsis: A chance meeting and instant connection between Amelia Becham and Gideon Edwards, the Duke of Birmingham, sets in motion a Season full of misunderstanding.

~review~
Normally a miscommunication trope is the third act kiss of death, but when a Bridgerton-esque story STARTS with a misunderstanding, you have my attention. I was intrigued by the set up, but like so much in that time period, not a lot…. happens, and I found myself wishing for a little more action and a little less internal monologuing. The brevity of the story and the truncated timeline made me wish for more character development, yet felt authentic to the short courtship periods of the time.
For a Regency-era romance, March threads the needle between having the language feel timely without getting bogged down and feeling like a caricature. The spice is very light, which would make this a great suggestion for someone that enjoyed Bridgerton and is looking for a short, quick read that isn’t too graphic.

the Duke and his Mistress

A chance meeting and instant connection between Amelia Becham and Gideon Edwards, the Duke of Birmingham, sets in motion a Season full of misunderstanding.

Step into the Regency where everyone is gossiping and pointing out scandals. The worst has yet to be revealed to Amelia. This sweet, innocent and captivating (not weak) orphan is thrust into society with her sister at her heals to accept an offer of marriage. The one she’s hoping asks her is non other than the Duke of Birmingham; Gideon.

If you believe in love at first sight then you’ll understand the collision of feelings Gideon and Amelia have. However, their desires are swooped up and muddle reality of their stations in life…that is until all is finally resolved after a third act break.

K.P. March is new to the historical romance landscape and has given me a fresh perspective on the turmoil of healing childhood trauma during the 1800s.

Gideon shines in this book and is healed with Amelia’s acceptance and forgiveness.

“I don’t know how you were made for me, or I for you, but you were, and you have gathered the pieces of my broken and scarred soul and rebuilt it whole and healed.”

Thank you Torchlitink and KP March for an advanced copy read for my honest review. This was. delightful read and I’ll be lurking for new titles.

Gideon has sworn he will never marry, Amelia is focused on getting her sister and best friend to admit they love each other. When they meet their connection and pull to each other is immediate and intense. They go back and forth with each other through out the London season and try to work through misunderstanding and misconceptions in order to find their own happy ending together.

Gideon drove me insane the whole time he was so wrong about Amelia but he finally figured it out. Amelia is so sweet and she cares so deeply about her family and friends. I think that Gideon and Amelia together bring out the best in each other and their friends and family members help them get out of their own heads so they can get their happy ending. I’m so happy that we will get more of them in The Gem 🥰

I’m going to be honest here, I almost didnt read this book. It is written in third person and that has turned me away in the past, HOWEVER, I’m so glad I put that to the side and read this book!!! First of all, once I started I couldn’t even remember I was reading 3rd person POV I was lost in this world! Backstory, My first book I read and still own to this day is Pride and Prejudice The Great Illustrated Classics edition, I fell in love with Mr.Darcy and now I have another love, Gideon Edward’s ! Amelia and Gideon have an instant connection and because of false information their love story takes a wrong turn and through trial and error they have to find their way back to each other. He’s got a damaged soul and she is the kind hearted girl who is there to fix everything inside of him. The way you can imagine these characters confessing their love for each other, the way you can feel the desire and the magnitude of their love through the pages made it so I couldn’t put it down! I love this era because it’s not just “I love you” it’s so much more and when Gideon confessed his love I was sobbing. This book is OUT NOW! So if you are willing to give it a chance you really won’t regret it!

Spice: 1

Tropes:

Dual POV

The Mistress is a Regency Era romance about misunderstandings. FMC Amelia is not a member of the TON, however, she grew up as a sibling to the Earl of Coventary, who has taken Amelia and her sister in as his wards. However, because the Earl prefers a life in the country with his adopted sisters, the TON have spread rumors that Amelia is in fact his mistress.

After inviting the Duke of Birmingham over to dinner and witnessing the immediate connection between the Duke and Amelia, the Earl decides it's time for his sisters to come out in society. However, not knowing the rumors... will they be accepted?

The Duke, however, has other plans... which is to woe Amelia from the Earl to be his mistress instead. What will happen when he finds out the truth that Amelia isn't in fact someone to be bought?

I thought the story was cute. The Duke reminded me of the Duke in Bridgerton with this family background involving his father. However, I found him kinder and softer, which I liked. Amelia was sweet but don't let her fool you. She's got a spicy side to her you don't see coming! Definitely an easy read!

Mixed feelings about this. Loved the author’s description/writing of the couple’s connection but it was too quick and sudden for me. And for that level of connection, Gideon’s assumption was out of character.

Like, how could he read her so wrong?! And during that so-called “friendship” with Thomas, he didn’t bother to ask ONCE? Ugh. Men. So freaking dumb.

I expected a lot more grovel but I just knew there wouldn’t be when Amelia went to him and APOLOGISED FOR NOT WANTING TO BE HIS MISTRESS AND OFFERED HERSELF AS A MISTRESS ANYWAY (this made me sob like a baby because honey, you’re worth SO MUCH MORE).

Near the end when he suddenly appeared at Coventry House (I forgot the full name) before T & L’s wedding, he even said he expected a few days for her to forgive him BUT NOOOOOO. Baby girl forgave him on the spot and invited him to her bed ASAP LIKE GURLLLLL 😭😭😭

All in all, what was I thinking? Expecting a long grovel from historical romance. All is well. The end and 9 months later 🤰🏻

OMG I FORGOT TO ADD — THOMAS AND LIV FELT ICKY. Like 😭😭😭 he basically grew up with her and possibly RAISED her??? I could accept Thomas and Amelia bcs they were close in age, but Thomas and Liv? Yuck. INCESTTTTTT I’m glad they don’t have their own book ok that’s all

Firstly a massive thank you to TorchLitInk for providing the eARC for this one!

This was a super fast paced, easy to follow historical romance following Amelia and Gideon in their relationship!

Amelia is very accurate I feel to the women of that time. She’s very quiet but still self assured and Gideon knows what he wants. He’s got a lot of issues bless him but by the end he truly wants to work on them for Amelia which is so sweet.

If you want something quick and easy to read that gives the historical romance vibes then this is one to pick up.

That being said, because the book is so fast, I didn’t really have time to care or get invested in the characters and their relationship.

It’s also labelled as having ‘light dom/sub vibes’ which yeah kind of? But also not, it’s just that Gideon is very typical of the men in that era so I feel like this wrongly labelled

There isn’t much of a plot either, and everything happens so quickly like there’s no real build up just instant attraction (he wants her, she wants him), lots of miscommunication when there really wasn’t any need?

Overall, it was an okay read but I just wanted a bit more

K.P. March writes The Mistress: Foxglove Regency Romance Books

A story that ensnares the reader and sends them into the early 1800’s. Beautifully described and captivating.

I enjoyed the sweet characters and their relationships with each other, as well as how K.P. Gave the readers vivid descriptions of the countryside of the outskirts of London. Here in the countryside live the Duke Of Coventry and his wards. Now enter the Duke of Birmingham, Gideon. A friend of the Duke of Coventry and a man of complex emotions and emerald green eyes.

This story takes us to a Season of formality inside the society, expected courtships, and some stolen kisses.

I enjoyed the story, and found I enjoyed how the characters interacted with each other. The more I read the more I enjoyed the story and wanted to not put it down.

I will not spoil the book. I think everyone should take a journey to this time of prim and proper, with just a pinch of spice.

Beautiful Characters
Beautiful background
Many many great lines of devotion for family and acceptance.

Recommended. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

🔥There is some descriptive naughty time. But not blasted through the entire book.

Since I am taking part in the review tour next month for The Gem it seemed only fitting that I should read the first book in this series. Let me tell you this book had me hooked from the start. The characters and plot were wonderful. I will admit that I wasn't exactly impressed with the male hero when I first met him but the fact that he was able to change his attitude and redeem himself made him okay in my book. Overall this was such a wonder regency novel.

Amelia and her sister Lydia have spent most of their lives living with their guardian Thomas. Thomas has developed a deep fondness for Lydia however his intentions have always been honorable. But in a society that loves to gossip rumors have a tendency to get out of hand.

One of those fools is a Duke named Gideon who finds himself enamored with Amelia. He will stop at nothing to make Amelia his mistress but soon finds himself falling for her. However, when he finds out the rumors of Amelia's bad reputation are false he realizes he has made a mess of things and has possibly lost his true love.

ARC Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

Set during the Regency era, the story follows Amelia Becham, a sweet and good-natured young woman who is very content with her life in the country alongside her sister and adopted brother. However, after a chance encounter and instant connection with the brooding Gideon Edwards, Duke of Birmingham, Amelia’s life quickly takes a dramatic turn. Can Amelia and Gideon find happiness in each other’s arms, or will scandal and misunderstandings keep them apart?

I really enjoyed this book - it was such an easy read full of the splendour of the Regency era. The Mistress is a must-read for Bridgerton and historical romance lovers.

Congratulations to K.P. March on your debut novel and thank you so much to K.P. March and Torch Lit Ink for my ARC.

my first ever ARC 🥹 what an honour!

this was a fun, fast paced, historical romance. i’ve never watched Bridgerton, but i feel like this gives off the same kinda vibes. the book follows Amelia and Gideon, the Duke of Birmingham, their instant connection after their chance meeting and all the drama that comes afterwards. Amelia is a strong, sensible and gentle character, while Gideon is a bit jaded and skeptical, because of his troubled past. the misunderstanding/miscommunication trope is heavy in this one, and there were times i wanted to reach through my phone screen and tell the characters to just talk it out already. i definitely think K.P. March wrote this trope very well for it to evoke such a strong feeling within me. overall, this was a good introduction into the historical romance world, and i look forward to reading more by this author.

thank you so much to K.P. March and Torch Lit Ink for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

Wow! This book really had me battling a rollercoaster of emotions! I didn’t think two characters who deserve each other so much and complement each other took a minute to get there. This novel is based in the 1800s, which I absolutely loved. It was kind of giving Bridgerton vibes with the Duke and Earl titles 🙂‍↕️ and presenting the girls during the season in London.

I truly loved reading this book! But boy did it get me mad and annoyed at some parts of the book! Like I truly felt like I wanted to be next to Amelia and yell at Gideon for her! You think this book is going one way in storytelling but the plot twist leaves you at the edge of your seat!

I love how descriptive K.P. March is with Gideon’s yearning and for longing for Amelia and vice versa 🤭 the way these two just have this instant connection and yearning that feels palpable through the book!
