Born in the wilds of British Columbia, the young Faith frolicked among the Sasquatch native to the province before moving to Ontario at age five. There she was homeschooled with her three brothers, and developed an unnatural passion for galloping around on horseback, though never without a proper helmet (because you only get one skull). After twenty years of suffering through Ontario’s obscenely hot summers, she migrated east, and now lives beside the other ocean in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She worked in animation for a bit, and now draws comics full time. She’s not sure how that happened either.

Rating and reviewing a comic book is a bit different from a novel or short story, however I do stand by the fact that comics are, too, literature and deserve a level of respect and attention from readers.

“The Mummy” is a new imagining of the classic Universal Monster story by award-winner Faith Erin Hicks, who both wrote and illustrated this book—which is pretty cool.

Hicks touches upon some of the themes in her afterword that will carry through in this new series, namely the gothic romance of the 1932 film. Obviously, given that this is 1) a pilot and 2) a comic, there’s a lot of ground in cover in a limited number of pages. I thought it was handled pretty well here.

A lot is established and the titular mummy is already in motion by the end. Some new plot elements are introduced, too, and I’m curious to see where these go.

Recommendation for Universal and Skybound/Image: after y’all do these individual monster runs, make them cross over. Make them team up “Monster Squad” style or fight or something… but please have them interact. That would be sweet. Thanks.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #1 is an Image Comics issue written and drawn by Faith Erin Hicks with art by Lee Loughridge. It is cover dated March 2025.

Helen is the daughter of an Egyptian mother and British father who is charged with excavating historic sites near Thebes. As a young woman, she desperately wants to be friends with the locals whose parents are employed by her father, many of whom give her the cold shoulder. Struggling to find her identity, she soon learns she has a connection to an Egyptian woman who lived thousands of years in the past who is trying to reconnect with her eternal love.

I do not remember much about the original Mummy film other than I enjoyed it. This comic seems to be a modern day retelling from a different character perspective, similar to Tynion’s Dracula series. To date, this is my favorite Image Universal Monsters title. I really enjoyed the art in this first issue. It’s a bit on the cartoony side but the colors and scenery are just so beautiful. I believe the hardcover edition just released so I’m going to have to seek that out!

I enjoyed this, but so little happens. This is why I wait and read collections, because I'm too impatient for the story to unfold.

Pretty mediocre art accompanying a pretty mediocre script. I could have kept going with the series if the art was at least interesting, but it's not.
