The writing is absolutely incredible with the attention to detail, emotional depth, and intensity found within its pages.
It’s books like this one that cements why I love ARC reading— to be one of the first people to get a glimpse into something so completely brilliant, and have just a moment to let it sit in your thoughts and rest there before everyone else jumps on board and it blows up…
If this book doesn’t blow up in a big way— well, people aren’t reading it right.
This is one of the most incredible debut novels I’ve ever read— C.R Kaine enthralled me from the very first pages with how she weaves the narrative and drags you in to the story emotionally as it unfolds, helping to bind you to the characters and their emotional plight.
Catalyst to the Lumens is slow burn, action packed and addictive read… I could not put it down! I’ve read this ARC twice before leaving this review and I know I’ll be back to visit it again.
I don’t give 5 stars easily, because I’m a fussy old wench. 5 stars from me means I’m either obsessed, or it had some ‘out of the box’ element that moved me or my thoughts so profoundly that it provoked my thoughts to a point I was fixated well after the fact.
This book had it all— if I could give bonus stars… I’d be sprinkling them like confetti right now!
People looking for a dark romance that feels a little more personal with how it delves deeper into human and emotional connection — THIS IS THE ONE!
This isn’t your usual skin deep dark romance. This book is intense, nitty-gritty and so completely incredible— though it most certainly contains all the things we all love in a dark romance!
The MMC Merrick and MFC Dahlia will live rent free in my head for a long time to come.
Christ on a cracker — this review is nearly a novel in itself, and that’s not usually my MO but sometimes, it just has to be done. I could write another few pages in relation to this book, but have to go stalk the author and buy this book!
- I haven’t proofed this review novel… I’ll get there, just had to get this out while it was fresh in my head!
*ARC review* Dahlia was just going through the motions—until one 911 call shatters her routine and plunges her into a world of secrets, shadows, and irresistible danger. Catalyst to the Lumens is a dark romance that grips you from the first page, weaving together mystery, suspense, and a brooding, red-flag male lead you’ll fall for against your better judgment. Equal parts romance, thriller, and twisted intrigue—this story delivers it all.
THIS is dark romance. THIS is stalker romance. It’s unhinged in the best way possible. The plot races forward, perfectly matched with the relentless spice—hot, intense, and constant, yet somehow never overpowering the story. Just when you think it’s gone too far, it pulls you back with moments of calm…and yes, THERE’S AFTERCARE. Absolutely devoured this one.
That being said...please, please pay attention to the trigger warnings. There are some pretty heavy themes throughout.
As an ARC reader of this new up and coming author, I can whole heartedly say she is a rising star. Catalyst to the Lumens takes you on a dark, perverse, twisted ride of awesomeness. C.R. Kaine's character development and descriptive writing is that of a true writer. It's hard to believe this is her first book. Can't wait to see what is next!
Catalyst to the Lumens by C.R. Kaine is a captivating dark romance novel that blends mystery, morally grey romance, and psychological drama. The story follows Merrick and Dahlia, two complex characters whose paths cross in a tale full of twists, emotions, and profound revelations.
Merrick, a reserved and introspective individual, brimming with secrets is pulled into an unraveling mystery when he meets Dahlia, a passionate and enigmatic woman who carries a past that is at once haunting and compelling. Together, they navigate a world full of secrets, where their connection grows and is tested by both external forces and their inner turmoil. Kaine's portrayal of their dynamic is raw and authentic, capturing the push and pull of their evolving relationship. The tension between Merrick’s guarded nature and Dahlia’s openness creates a fascinating interplay, drawing readers into their journey.
The novel’s title, “Catalyst to the Lumens”, is evocative, hinting at the idea of uncovering hidden truths and unraveling the layers of both the characters pasts and the world around them. As the story unfolds, the "lumens" symbolise not just the uncovering of secrets but also the delicate and often fragile nature of relationships and identity. Kaine's writing is rich in detail, offering readers a sense of immersion into a world where nothing is as simple as it seems. There are emotional highs and lows, as Merrick and Dahlia both grapple with their personal demons, challenging their perception of trust and love.
One of Kaine's strengths lies in creating atmosphere. The world-building is subtle but effective, setting the tone and mood of each scene. The pacing of the novel is steady, maintaining a balance between character-driven moments and plot development. The slow-burn romance is well-crafted, allowing the reader to fully understand and invest in the emotional arcs of Merrick and Dahlia.
However, the novel's focus on character introspection and internal conflicts may not appeal to readers looking for a more fast-paced, action-driven plot. Some of the philosophical discussions between the characters could be seen as overly introspective at times, but these moments serve to deepen the complexity of their relationship and emotional growth.
Overall, the novel is a thoughtful and well-crafted novel that excels in exploring the depth of human connection, the intricacies of love, and the personal struggles that define us. Kaine's writing shines in its ability to craft relatable, multidimensional characters and deliver an emotionally rich narrative. For those who appreciate books that focus on character development and emotional depth, this is a novel that will resonate long after the final page is turned.
This was an adrenaline rush in book format; a mind-fuck full of twists and turns laced with the most insane dramatic tension. I was ADDICTED.
This plot was intense; emotionally and in terms of story. I was invested, I was IN within like, 10 pages. You could feel there was something brewing in the background almost instantly. I had to force myself to put this down when real life came calling; I basically lived my weekend one-handed.... for SEVERAL reasons... wink wink.
MERRICK. This MMC. FILTHY. DOMINATING. OMG. My type. Just.... my type. That is all. The chemistry with Dahlia was palpable and the spice as sure as hell spicing.
I know that this was C.R. Kaine's debut and that this was a leap of faith but GIRL. Please bless us with more? This is my formal request in writing.
What a unique read! A thrilling dark romance with banter, spice, and mystery, I was hooked from the first page; heart skipping at times and pulse racing at others. I absolutely loved the FMC. Her style, her taste in music, her friendship with her best friend, and her desire to push forward after a horrific trauma. And the MMC… my oh my, morally grey verging on morally black with a heart only for the FMC. Broken and yet still strong for her. Unravelling both of their histories and wondering what their future could hold was gripping from start to finish. A very exciting debut from an author with a way for pulling you in to her story and her characters’ heads so thoroughly. I would highly recommend this to dark romance and thriller lovers alike! *Check your trigger warnings.*
I was given an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
•mutual stalking •dark romance •masked man •MMC murder suspect
As a debut novel I was pleasantly surprised by how good the book was and honestly can’t wait to read more by this author in the future.
Books like this make me so happy that I’ve gotten the opportunity to arc read because I feel like I would’ve missed out on a good book if I hadn’t. This book had me hooked from the first chapter. It was very fast paced. It was one of those books I found myself not wanting to put down. I think there was something always happening that held my attention which I appreciated. I do think it felt a little insta-lovey, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Please tell me we will be seeing a book with Jude and Hattie🫣
For being a first time Indy author, I can see HUGE potential. I really enjoyed the storyline. It made me feel all the emotions!!! it was an easy read which I also Love! I wish there was more explanation in some aspects of the story, I felt the timeline jump in some parts were a bit much without any real explanation of how. With a bit more attention to detail on specific timelines and storylines I think this book would have been a 4 star read for me. I will say I was expecting a twist at the end, the reading gave me Freida vibes and I was expecting a Freida type ending where you think you know what’s about to happen and then the twist comes up and rocks your world. Didn’t quite happen for me with this book but that’s okay. I did feel that the author did a good job at explaining certain details to really give the readers a visual of what was happening, but there were times where I think it was slightly over detailed making it seem redundant. All in all the storyline was there, easy read. Can’t wait to see what else this author is going to come out with!!
“Well, I did,” he replied, his gaze steady and unwavering. “And she won’t disrespect you again. Not while I’m around— and not while you’re around, either. You understand, dark angel?”
I could not put this book down and when I did, I was instantly thinking about it until I picked it back up. It was a perfect mix of possessive, unhinged toxic love in the most positive way possible. Surviving terrible things does leave a streak of darkness within us that nothing can erase, but there is a beauty in cultivating that darkness that not all understand. Catalyst to the Lumens perfectly embodies that beautiful darkness. I haven't read every dark romance out there, but I have never read one quite like this and I really appreciated that. As always read the TW/CWs because this book paints a very real and vivid picture of what it is like to be conditioned in a very abusive relationship, among many other things.
That was the problem with my connection to Merrick— it was fueled by insanity and chaos . I loved how fucked up he was, and he loved my darkness. He reveled in it. Together, we were pure toxicity.
There were some very unexpected twists and some dark moments that still live rent-free in my mind. The characters were all interesting and added something to the story instead of just being NPCs. I had so many theories about the ending, and I was pleasantly surprised to be mostly wrong about it. This book really made me think about the ethics and morality of the situation it presents, especially in these modern times of convicted killer fan clubs and idolizing actual sociopaths. I appreciated that, and it's still something I ponder. It was a great debut offering and I can't wait to read more from CR Kaine in the future. If you enjoyed Cry, Little Dove and want something with more stalking and without the kidnapping, this is for you.
“Good girl.” A jolt of heat shot through me. Wetness pooled between my thighs, and I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. Who knew two simple words could do that to me?"
Fun fact that has nothing to do with the review or rating. I spent many summers where this book takes place. I'm sure this is normal for romance readers who live in big cities, but as a heavy fantasy reader, this was new to me and I definitely let out a strange giggle while learning what city we were in.
“Yes, hello. This is the Huntsville Police Department."

Merrick’s words startled me, as though he were everywhere, watching my every move. Strangely, I was captivated by it, knowing that I might never again feel true danger— only the kind that came from Merrick himself. He was the threat, and everything else, he would take on for me. That thought gave me an odd sense of protection. I smiled.

Transparency: Long time reader, new to Goodreads. This is my 1st ARC review
Due to the graphic nature of the content which may be alienating for some readers, it's important to go into this book with an awareness of the themes explored and trigger warnings.
Catalyst to the Lumens is a gritty, intense indie novel that takes readers on an unpredictable journey into the twisted world of obsession, morality, and desire. Written with a rawness that pushes boundaries, the book explores the psychological and emotional turmoil of a 911 dispatcher who falls into a dangerously obsessive relationship with a person she suspects may be a murderer.
The novel centers around Dahlia, who finds herself entangled in a dangerous dance with the mysterious and charismatic Merrick. Their relationship, both magnetic and disturbing, builds on a complex interplay of love, lust, power and control, particularly as the characters engage in dark and sometimes violent role play. With elements of domestic violence, knife play, and the constant threat of violence, the story presents a challenging, uncomfortable, and at times unsettling narrative.
Dahlia’s internal conflict is central to the storyline. As a 911 dispatcher, she is used to managing chaos and saving lives—but she’s ill-prepared for the chaos that brews in her own heart and mind when she is drawn into a relationship with someone who embodies both danger and desire. The psychological complexity of her descent into what appears to be a toxic relationship is captivating, as the reader can never be entirely sure if she is a victim or a willing participant in the madness that unfolds. This ambiguity is part of what makes the book so compelling, forcing readers to confront their own perceptions of morality, safety, and personal responsibility.
The sinister romance scenes are written with an unflinching, unromanticized brutality. Kaine’s portrayal of these acts is unapologetically blunt, and while some readers may find it shocking, it's clear that these elements are integral to the novel's commentary on power dynamics, control, and the darkness that can reside in human nature.
This is not a book for the faint of heart. The writing is sharp and often deeply unsettling, capturing with raw honesty the emotional wreckage and psychological damage that abuse leaves in its wake.
Final review: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Catalyst to the Lumens is a thought-provoking, dark, and disturbingly fascinating read. While its rawness and taboo subjects might not be for everyone, readers who are intrigued by psychological thrillers or dark romance will likely find themselves drawn into its complex, twisted world.
Kaine’s debut was dark, daring, and wickedly addictive. The storyline had me hooked, the spice was off the charts, and the emotional depth hit hard. For a first-time indie release, this was fearless and unforgettable. You’ll find me first in line for whatever she writes next!
Catalyst to the Lumens by C.R. Kaine is a read that plunges you into a world of darkness, and intense emotional turmoil. The author creates a narrative that is both enchanting and deeply unsettling, leaving your mind blown.
The book's unique atmosphere takes hold, and some of its themes are so compelling they might just inspire you to get in touch with your dark side! 👀 After finishing this, I've decided that moving forward my husband will address me as his "dark angel"😈.
Getting into these characters Kaine truly shines in character development. Daliah is incredibly well-developed and deeply sympathetic. Her journey is fraught with trauma, and the author does an exceptional job of portraying her traumatized and fragile state. I felt genuinely bad for her throughout the entire book, rooting for her resilience and hoping for her eventual healing🥺. Her vulnerability makes her incredibly relatable, and her struggles truly impactful.
Then there's Merrick 🙃, a character who commands the narrative with an undeniable presence. His actions and motivations are so complex and unpredictable that he had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. Every decision he made, every secret he held, added layers of suspense and kept me eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next
And finally, Jay 😑. There's no other way to put it: Jay is just absolutely crazy. His erratic behavior, unpredictable nature, and the sheer intensity of his personality are portrayed with such vividness that he becomes a force of nature within the story. He injects pure chaos into the plot, ensuring there's never a dull moment.
Catalyst to the Lumens is a powerful and engrossing read. C.R. Kaine has crafted a world that is both alluring and terrifying, populated by characters who will stay with you and have you wondering if you should join in the darkness 🤔
Let's start by saying hello hello, my girly girls!
Today is review day once again (Yay!) Let me tell you. I was so excited to start reading this book. I could tell you that I had an idea of what I was getting into, but I was in for a surprise.
To say that I enjoyed the book is an understatement. The book starts in a way that makes you say, “What? No! He didn't do that!” but I won't say any more because I want you to read it too.
I loved the characters. You could say that both of them are a little broken, with some fractures, so to speak, which the other helps to heal or fill in those missing pieces, making them both the glue for their wounds. Without a doubt, it has been a spicy book that leaves you with your mouth open and wanting a breeze to cool your face from how red those scenes can make you. We also can't ignore that both characters have dirty talk that leaves me speechless.
📍Do I recommend it?
Of course I do! There's no doubt about it.
I'm not even going to tell you to think about it. It's a book with strong themes (like every book I read), so as always, I recommend reading the warnings if you're new to Dark romance and want to give it a try.
If you've been into dark romance for a while and are looking for something new to read, this is the perfect book for you. Just Imagine a 911 dispatcher, a suspected killer with the potential to be a masked man, and with so much spice that you need to have water nearby so you don't burn yourself.
So don't wait any longer and order “Catalyst To The Lumens” now. And when you have it, come back and tell me.
❥ Spoiler Free ❥ Catalyst to the Lumens by: C. R. Kaine ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ ❥ 411 pages ❥ published on May 22, 2025 ❥ adult dark romance ❥ dark, true crime, mutual stalking, he falls harder, spicy, forbidden love
What a novel to break into the scene with! It wasn’t too short and C. R. Kaine did not cheap out on the details. This is everything I had hoped for. I knew I was about to read a hook-line-and-sinker when I was greeted with a tailored Spotify playlist and a thoughtful TWs/CWs list. The characters and the tension littered throughout these pages truly kept me curious to read more. I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to the forbidden romance trope, but a dispatcher and a murder suspect? Not even close to what I thought I was going to be reading, and it was a delicious surprise. I will give all the kudos to the author for, from what I’ve been able to tell, doing her research with the dispatch center and the ins-and-outs of police work. It felt generally realistic and not over exaggerated to fit the narrative. Not to mention the dual POVs left me craving for more of Merrick’s thoughts and how he processed the world around him. I really enjoyed this read, I don’t have many things I feel I need to point out as constructive-criticism. As this is C. R. Kaine’s debut novel, I think she blew the expectations out of the water. I look forward to reading more.
❥ read with: Kindle Paperwhite SE ❥ I would like to take a moment to thank C.R. Kaine for the privilege to receive her ARC for Catalyst to the Lumens— her debut novel! Being my first time reading an ARC, I was a bit anxious but I’m happy to say it all worked out beautifully.
Thank you to CR Kaine for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I’m really loving these books that are coming out that cater to multiple genres. Dark Romance with a mystery/thriller aspect is something I didn’t know I needed but I definitely enjoyed! Catalyst to the Lumens follows Dahlia, a 911 operator, who has a dark past involving DV. One night she receives a call from Merrick, who at first seems upset that he found his wife dead, but before he hangs up the call, he says something that makes her question everything. Not being able to let it go, she finds out where he lives and watches him, intrigued by his demeanour but also fully attracted to him. What ensues is a wild dark romance mixed with a thriller vibe when Merrick becomes the lead suspect and Danlia’s abusive ex comes back into the picture.
For a debut novel, this was overall well written. I enjoyed the storyline even if some parts were a bit unbelievable. Dahlia was an interesting take on a somewhat morally grey character. She’s definitely a little unhinged and makes some questionable decisions. Merrick was a bit of a struggle for me. It’s like he couldn’t decide if he was morally grey or just in love? I don’t know, some moments just didn’t flow for me. There was also some major issues for me in terms of the spice scenes. Not giving spoilers but ummmm yeah somethings off there.
Either way, the book was fast paced, lots going on to keep you intrigued. The dynamic between Dahlia and Merrick was definitely intense and you could feel the tension between them. If you’re a fan of dark romance and supporting indie authors I recommend checking this one out!
10/10 — Dark, Dirty, and So Addictive Devoured this couple and story
She had me gasping and squealing with pure smutty good time energy. This is easily one of the wildest dark romances I’ve read. I loved every minute of it. Merrick is seriously dark and damaged with a brutal past, but he’s also fiercely loyal and has the best ride-or-die friend. When a tragedy brings him and 911 operator Dahlia together, something real and raw sparks between them. Their love story blooms straight out of the darkness they both carry, and somehow it just works.
They’re probably the most perfectly F’d up couple I’ve ever read, and I was hooked from chapter one. The chemistry is insane. The tension? Unreal. The trauma? Whew. But it all adds up to a story that feels powerful and unforgettable.
Also, I’m obsessed with Hattie and Jude. If we don’t get at least a novella about them getting their own happy ending, I will be so sad. They were such strong, badass best friends to Merrick and Dahlia, and they totally deserve their moment.
The fact that the author is a real life 911 operator and her husband works in the trades just makes the story feel even more real. You can feel the authenticity in every detail.
This was such a fun, intense ride and an amazing debut. I’m already a huge fan and would be honored to join your hype team. Seriously, dark romance girlies, add this to your TBR. You won’t regret it. 10/10 recommend.
I was excited for this debut dark romance novel filled with intrigue, emotional growth, and spice. As I say a lot in my reviews, check the trigger warnings before reading. The characters were likable, and I was happy to see dual POV within the chapters because it helped me understand the main characters' perspectives on what was happening and get to know the thoughts behind their actions.
It had a lot of traditional dark romance tropes like stalking and obsessive behaviors, but there were some new takes that were cool to see (no spoilers here). I also liked that while the plot revolved around the main catalyst (the phone call, and what happened), there were also moments of introspection and personal growth for both of the characters. They both have to face past demons if they hope to find a future, and I enjoyed the act of them learning to be vulnerable and let people in. Both Merrick and Dahlia were written with so many layers, and the side characters were so much fun. I hope Hattie gets her book one day.
Having Dahlia be a 911 dispatcher was neat. The spice was off the charts, and I kept wondering what was going to happen next. As each layer of their stories was uncovered I was reading fast and faster. The ending did wrap up a little fast for me, but I overall enjoyed the read and will be following this author for more.
Tropes: stalking, murder suspect MMC, forbidden love, masked MMC, exhibitionism, touch her and 💀
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Yes yes yes yes yes yes. YES. YES!!! THIS WAS SO GOOD! This book had everything from a loveable best friend to a perfectly written morally gray MMC! Dahlia is an AMAZING main character and personally, I think that the career choice for her was really creative and definitely set the tone for the rest of the book!
My emotions were all over the place. The DV victim representation and everything that Merrick had to go through had me sobbing, the cute little side thing going on with Hattie and Jude had me giggling and kicking my feet, and the way Merrick dirty talked had me DROOLING.
I can’t really say much else without spoilers, but all I have to say is this book is definitely worth picking up and I’m DYING for a book about Hattie and Jude! 🥹🖤
On that note, I’ll leave you with this quote: “You and I? We’re going to find the light in our darkness. We’ll bring our own lanterns and camp out here if we have to. But together? It’ll never be permanently dark. No. Together, we ignite sparks, create fires and fuel flames. We’re the catalyst, the lumens inside the light.”
So glad I discovered this author ma’am this book was perfect, it had everything that I love and so much more. Your writing drew me in the way you described everything I loved. Can I say I want to live in Dahlia’s house too I don’t blame her for not wanting to leave. Dahlia is living but barely she’s been in an abusive relationship with the scum of the earth. She goes to work as a 911 operator at different hours. She has a really good friend Hattie who she’s known since they were young. Hattie sets her up with a guy that she’s known since thought was nice. But one night a call comes in and it’s a guy calling for an emergency that his wife is dead. No matter what Dahlia can’t get the call and the man’s voice out of her head. So what does she do she Facebook stalks and even drives by his home. Merrick is the owner of Oakley Construction who makes a call to 911 saying his wife is dead, but he flees the scene. He meets Dahlia a quiet, vibrant, gorgeous woman who happened to crash into his neighbors car. He can’t seem to fight his desires and follows her after their date. These two just wow so much spice like spice on top of spice with a drizzle of more spice then add a sprinkle of more.
❣ 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 - - dark romance - thriller/mystery - stalking - forbidden love - masked MMC - touch her & die
❣ 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 - Grateful to and for the opportunity to read this early! First of all, huge congratulations to the author on her debut novel though honestly, you'd never guess it’s a debut. The writing, the pacing, the emotions... everything hits just right. Dahlia is such a relatable character, she’s been through hell, and sometimes, even time isn’t enough to heal certain wounds. I felt her pain in my bones. And Merrick's backstory shattered me, and I adored every broken, brooding part of him. Their chemistry is absolutely electric. The slow burn, the tension, the dirty talk—yep, I’ve added another fictional boyfriend to my list. Catalyst to the Lumens is gripping from the very first page. It’s a perfect blend of dark romance, suspense, and action with a red-flag love interest you know you shouldn’t want but do anyway. Also, shoutout to the side characters they’re written with such depth, they truly complete the story. Addictive, emotional, and completely unputdownable I devoured it.
This was a really good book!! I loved it and I'm a little surprised this is a debut novel! It had the perfect twists and turns, and I just thought it was all amazing! I loved getting to see Dahlia as she continued growing from her past and allowed herself to open up and love after what she had been through! And the way that she allowed herself to still enjoy what she wanted in the bedroom, despite the trauma she had survived, was really inspiring to see! And I loved Merrick's story and how we got to help piece the puzzle together as everything went on! I thought he was so sweet to Dahlia, and I loved how he was willing to do anything to support and protect her throughout his own mess! I loved these two and how they came together! I felt like this was such a great story, the perfect blend of dark and suspenseful! And I LOVED the side characters that we met along the way, too! I'm shamelessly hoping for a Jude and Hattie book! Overall, this was such a fantastic book, and I'm thrilled I got to be part of it's journey! 4.75 stars; 4.25 spice
⚫ Before reading this book, please make sure to check trigger warnings! ⚫
I just finished watching the 9-1-1 season finale the other day, so I was pleasantly surprised to dive into this book and discover that the FMC is a dispatcher, and what's even cooler is that C.R. Kaine is a real-life 9-1-1 communications operator!
Even before starting the book, I saw content warnings and mentions that this book may not be for everyone, which intrigued me. Right from the beginning, I could see why: this is a dark romance that explores morally grey characters (bordering black I dare say), who both have painful pasts.
I liked the dual POV, which added depth and tension as the story unfolded. There’s almost a thriller type of feel to it as you're constantly wondering what’s going to happen next. The pacing was spot-on too as the book is the perfect length, with just the right amount of detail to build the world and characters without feeling like it was dragging.
Thank you once again to C.R. Kaine for the opportunity to be a part of the ARC team, and congratulations on your debut novel! 🖤
*ARC REVIEW* First and foremost, mind the trigger warnings! Merrick and Dahlia are an interesting pair who found each other in the craziest way. A 911 call entertwines their lives. A romance with a dark secret in the mix. There is stalking, masks, and LOTS of spice. Merrick and Dahlia are both coming out from extremely toxic relationships and have to navigate through their trauma while they grow closer. This book wasn't just romance. It was a dark mystery, too. It had some twists, although none of them really surprised me. I had trouble with the pacing of the book. The main characters moved too fast, while the plot seemed to lag behind. I found myself skimming just to get through some parts. I don't care for spice over plot, so the amount of spicy scenes was a bit much for me. If you like it, though, you will like this book. I loved Hattie the most. She was my favorite character for sure. The book wasn't for me, personally, but if you read the description, trigger warnings, or some reviews and feel interested, you should definitely try it. It is worth a shot if those spark an interest in you.
Imagine you're a 911 operator who takes a call for a crime but upon hearing the voice of the caller (who becomes the main suspect) you're willing to risk everything, especially your career, to find him, make him yours and clear his name.
This book was spicy!!! I've been known to be a sucker for a bad boy once upon a time, and Merrick is top-teir in all the wicked ways. His filthy mouth had me gasping....but wanting more!! He would be considered a walking red flag but Dahlia is just broken enough to match his freak. Together, they light up the darkness and bring peace to each other.
I'm normally a fantasy reading girl but all the realism in this book was a nice change of pace. I could really immerse myself and feel as if I was right there with the characters as they went about the day to day stuff that felt right out of real life.
All in all, if you like your stories dark and hot, you'll want to check out this one. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 *Be sure to check the warnings first though as there are some heavy topics discussed and elements at play that could be triggering for some.
“Catalyst to the Lumens” follows the dual POV of 911 operator Dahlia Burroughs and construction company owner Merrick Ashbourne as they navigate equally tragic and difficult situations. When Dahlia receives a call revolving around a woman’s death one night at work she becomes enthralled by the man on the other end of the line. While their relationship may have began as an infatuation of pure lust, it will eventually be turned on its head and evolve into something more. This was a fast paced and thrilling dark romance full of enough mystery and spice to keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The characters had raw and feral qualities which kept the story interesting, and they also had distinct opposing qualities that balanced out the narrative between them. There was an abundance of spice in the story and a lot of darker qualities in character backstories, so make sure to read the trigger/content warnings before diving in. This alluring story will have dark romance lovers absolutely spellbound with its light in the dark qualities.
Merrick and Dahlia bring the HEAT in Catalyst to the Lumens. By that I mean C.R. gives us something so enticing it's almost as though it jumps off the pages at us.
Start by ignoring everything in my review and just read the Trigger Warnings. This book does get dark. I don't want to encourage you to read a book if it's not your cup of tea.
Now that we've got that out of the way... holy... yeah. The tension between Dahlia and Merrick is something to make you drool. Dahlia lives such a quiet life, up until she doesn't. A woman who helps the world while it sleeps, she sets out to fix things. But one call changes everything and now she has to figure out how to help, is it worth helping, can she even help?
Merrick is dark, dangerous and basically everything that your parents warn you to stay away from... And because of that you absolutely don't want to stay away. This leads to an obsessive, dangerous, tumultuous relationship.
Definitely worth the read. A great story that will leave your heart racing. Grab your copy to find out if Dahlia can save the darkness.
What an intense story!! This is a dark stalker thriller romance. Story sucked me in and I read this in one sitting. Tons of secrets and reveals that will make your jaw drop. And the spice!! 🥵
She knows true evil. So when she receives a call during her night shift as a police dispatcher from a guy informing that his wife is dead, among other mysterious things, Dahlia feels she needs to know more. She decides to investigate herself but she did not expect to find herself thrown down a rabbit hole or that she would like it so much. Dahlia never thought she would be able to feel drawn to a man. Not after her evil ex. Her darkness calls his…
He knew this would happen one day but he is glad she is gone. What he didn’t know was that a dark angel would come to his rescue. Her green eyes make him feel like he wants to confess everything immediately. But not yet. She can’t know everything yet. Soon though. Soon she will know my secrets. His darkness calls hers….
The past always comes back but they will fight it together. Like calls to like.

This debut had everything: dark romance, thriller vibes, and very very messy, morally grey/black characters I couldn’t stop reading. Dahlia, (perfect name) a 911 dispatcher with a haunting past, gets a chilling call from Merrick, a man whose wife is dead and who might not be telling the whole truth. YUP, HOOKED RIGHT THERE!
Their chemistry is intense, the dual POVs added depth that was perfect for the story, and the tension had me flipping pages like a madwoman. Dahlia is chaotic in all the best ways, Merrick is confusing (but so freaking hot), and together they’re an emotionally tangled, spicy disaster I absolutely loved.
The spice was spicy and even at times a little questionable, but I mean... I was here for it. A fast-paced, addictive read that delivered exactly what I wanted from a dark romance with a side of murder. C.R. Kaine crushed this debut, I'll definitely be reading whatever's written next!
This book was not what I expected in the absolute best way possible! I was expecting a dark romance read which is love but this was like a crime novel, meets thriller meets dark romance and I am SO here for it!
The pacing was great and the plot kept me engaged the whole time with the perfect amount of spice In my opinion. I truly didn’t want the story to end!
I’ve decided I want to be Dahlia (fmc) when I grow up! I absolutely adored her! If she were real we would absolutely be besties connecting over our love of black and our mug collections 🤣
Merrick (mmc) is absolutely chefs kiss 💋 trust me, he will quickly be at the top of your book boyfriend list 🫠
I loved this book and I 110% mean that! For a debut novel, this was knocked straight out of the park. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one as the next “booktok” dark romance sensation once it releases! It had me emotionallllllllllll by the end which doesn’t typically happen for me in DR books but here we are! She weaved a beautiful story with a dose of humanity and connections that are hard to make after being wronged in the worst ways.. without losing the classic dark romance feel. How she also added a bit of mystery into this book has to be my favorite part! A little sprinkle of “wtf really happened?” The spice was SPICINNNNNNNNN. The connection between the FMC and the MMC was everything I’ve ever needed in a book. 😮💨🖤 Side note: I absolutely NEED a little side story of Hattie & Jude 😩😩😭😭 Please watch those triggers though, this one dives into some very heavy topics.
