This may be spoilers for anyone who hasnt either read the manga this far ahead or seen the anime (give or take the basic... I said basic!... plot is the same).
But really, are you going to be looking at reviews for SM vol 9 if you havent at least seen or read this far ahead, or plan on being spoiled?
Either way, I warned you!
I love this arc. Ok, I love all the arcs. And Black Moon is still my favourite. Chibi Usa/Rini isnt my favourite soldier... but for some reason all the arcs I really love and certain elements of them pertain to her...
Black Moon... Black Lady...
Dream Arc... Chibi-Usa/Rini & Helios...
I must really like that squeaky pink meatball head (hehehe... meatball head).
So I give you... the cutest SM couple EVERRRRRR... (besides Usagi/Serena & Mamoru/Darien).
Now I know your thinking... 'But Lauren... thats a horse and a kid...' Step back haters! And let me finish!
She's riding the horse... oh come on! Doesnt that look fun? A horse that will take you places AND talk to you! (Yes, yes he's a Pegasus not a horse. I KNOW THIS. Just... go with it...)
Being cute n stuff...
Annnnd thennnn...
Wait a minute... THATS not a horse (Pegasus. OH BE QUIETTTT)... What on earth is... going o-
AHHHH! AHHH! AHHH! Seeee... he's not a horse!!! I TOLD YOU IT GETS GOOD.
Naww...
SideNote: For anyone who watched the SM anime dub... How creepy is it with that 40 yr old voice over doing Pegasus/Helios' voice! WHY?! It just... its laughable.
Ooh a Pegasus…That’s cool I guess. That is really the best I can say. I mean this series isn’t terrible. But for me personally, it went from campy innocent fun to weird fan service-y stuff. And I’m soooooo long over Chibi-Usa’s obsession with Mamo-chan.
5 > 4.5 stars. The Dead Moon Circus is fully in town and with it begins the monster of the chapter sailor senshi of the week segments. Along with some other things of course as we see how Dead Moon Circus wiggles its way into the town. I found it hilarious that the girls fell so easily for the tricks (especially Ami and Mako). You would think you know that the circus is up to something shady and just not go near it… but these girls purposely go to places owned by the circus. sighs I was a bit put-off again when Chibi-Usa commented that she looked good and her dad (Mamo) said she looked pretty. EHHHHHHH>.<. I also got pissed at Mamo-chan at how he protected his daughter over Usagi. Yes, she is lonely, yes, she is unhappy. But you are in a freaking relationship with someone, if she expresses that she would like some more attention, which if valid given how Chibi just wanders in at any time and forces her way in, don’t act like this. 😐
We do see that some time apparently did pass between battles as Ami comments that she had some moments with Pluto who taught her new things. A shame they never showed us this because now it just feels weird and out of place. There is some more drama as Chibi finds out stuff that had me rolling my eyes. Oh God girl you are such a dramalama.
I did love that Chibi was talking about her prince and boom unicorn, Helios. 😛
We learn more about the circus, about what is going on with Mamo (and Usagi), and much more. It was an action packed volume with new powers as well!
Excuse-me, I wanna read a whole book about Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna raising baby Hotaru, not just one chapter!! They even wear rings to pledge themselves to each other?!
I am glad we got to focus back on the Inner Scouts for this books, since the Outer Scouts have been hogging all the attention lately.
Also, one thing I noticed is that several of the Sailor scouts are orphans, but they're also only 16 years old, but they also live alone, yet somehow have money for stuff?? Haruka mentioned that she and Michuru have sponsors, since Haruka is somehow a race car driver and Michuru is a world renowned violinist. But what about Mamoru and Makoto??
What I like about this volume is that we see more of the other senshi. We practically focus on them. The part with the outer senshi is my favourite by far. What I don't like is how they all have to push away their dreams for their princess. Haruka always misses Usagi. Michiru and the others think of her. No, Michiru's greatest dream was to be a violist and be with Haruka. I prefer the original anime because there yes, they all have to save Usagi and protect her, but they also show more of themselves.
I swear every arc gets better and better so far I enjoy this arc better for some reason. I’m assuming since everyone is together and knows their role now instead of the opposing teams bs. But every Vol I get bewildered with the a male of changes that I’m witnessed in the anime. The way their upgrade is more so focused on themselves, their objects have conscious, Artemis HUMAN FORM. Saturn chasing after Chibi and now activating the other 3 who think their useless to Usagi. Or the fact mamoru and Usagi are about to be coughing blood. It’s about to go down

Yeah I thought this whole incest thing was gone, nope. Also the kissing of a kid? Looking over something like that is sus as hell. Sad that we can't have a good thing for long.
A very good volume of growth and development. Each inner senshi gets a chance to shine and the outer senshi show their strengths and passions. Art is gorgeous, as always.
The Dead Moon Arc is one of the weaker Sailor Moon arcs, primarily because Chibi Usa is allowed to step in as co-main character. No. Just no. Listen, I'm cool with Chibi Usa growing as a character. I'm fine with her fighting right alongside Sailor Moon, but the story definitely loses some traction when we focus on her rather than Usagi. Usagi is the heart and soul of the story and trying to pretend that Chibi Usa has the same gravitas is just that: pretending.
That said, since pretty much every chapter in this volume is a power-up type chapter it means we get to spend some one on one type with the inner senshi, which is always fun. However, the inner senshi can't hold a candle to the last chapter which finally brings back the outer senshi! For me, the highlight of this volume was showing how happy Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna were with their life with Hotaru, but always feeling in the back of their minds that they were going to have to return to battle someday. When Hotaru sees her reflection as Sailor Saturn? Chilling and beautiful. And I'm always down for Haruka and her devotion to Usagi.
And! Bonus points for quoting from "The Second Coming" and not using the final lines or "things fall apart; the center cannot hold." I don't think I've ever seen anyone quote this poem and not reference those famous lines, so it really impresses me that Takeuchi would direct our attention to elsewhere in the poem.
This was the weirdest volume yet I think. The clowns, the circus, the pegasus, the dreams. So many animals turned into humans? I kept being like what is even happening?
The last chapter is definitely the best one!! The domestic throuple. The high stakes. I wish the whole series had the same energy as that last chapter!!
Poder disfrutar este arco sin el relleno excesivo del anime es algo que agradezco demasiado. Este tomo nos muestra más a fondo los deseos y sueños de las chicas y como aceptan su destino. Y pues, tengo a Helios así que soy muy feliz.
Book:: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Volume 9 Author: Naoko Takeuchi Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
My final book review of 2021!
I really have enjoyed this series and have really enjoyed making my way through it. It is action packed and full of both growth and development. With all of that being said, I really am enjoying the almost slower pacing of the dream arc. I can see why people may not prefer this arc, but the slower pacing has given us a chance to really see into the characters’ heads. Plus, everyone is finally getting a chance to be in the spotlight.
Let’s start there. I really like how each chapter focuses on one character. Now, this does not mean that the other characters aren’t in there. I just like how everyone is finally getting a chance to have their moment in the spotlight. It gives us a chance to from an even deeper bond with the characters and allows us to see their hopes and dreams. It allows us to see the characters reflect on their journeys, which, in some cases, is more chilling than others. I really liked getting to see this character development and getting to spend time with characters that we normally don’t get to. Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy Sailor Moon’s point of view. However, it is nice for a change.
I do feel like the plot has slowed down a little bit with this arc. While we do have action and another enemy, it just seems like that the arc focuses mainly on the characters. Again, this is actually a very nice change and gives us a chance to really see how much the characters have both grown and matured over time. It’s almost like it’s giving us a chance to see everyone outside of just being a Sailor Guardian.
I do feel like the overall flow and story has greatly improved since the start of the manga. The artwork is still messy and what not, but I do feel like everything is flowing a lot better now. We can get a better since as to where the story is going and it’s just becoming a nice transition from page to page, volume to volume.
I guess I just like the overall direction that the story is going. Do I think this will go down as being my favourite arc? Probably not, but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the circus here, but one thing I'm appreciating is the deeper look at most of the Sailor Guardians. I was just complaining to Lisa how I felt like we barely got to see anything from Sailor Mercury since the first volume or so (despite--or because of--the large cast, the series tends to be highly focused on Sailor Moon and Chibi-Usa).
However, one slightly positive development--new romantic interest for Chibi-Usa, which is good because .
Throughout the past whenever I have read any of the Sailor Moon volumes, I have always felt bored or confused. In this case, it happened again. However, after a long break from reading this specific book and picking it up again, it was actually quite enjoyable.
What truly got me interested in finishing this book in one sitting was watching Venus awaken and the daily life of the outer scouts and their awakening. This arc has always been my favorite, so rating this might be a little biased. I’m excited to pick up the next book.
