Until the Shadows Claim Her

Rate this book
Running from a past that refuses to let her go, Celest’s escape ends on the side of a desolate road, her car dead in the pouring rain. But the true nightmare begins when she stumbles upon a looming, gothic estate—and into the hands of three masked men who hunt in the dark.

They tell her to run. They tell her to hide. They tell her she belongs to them.

But the manor shifts like it’s alive, the shadows whisper secrets she can’t ignore, and the longer she plays their wicked games, the harder it is to remember why she should run.

Because monsters wear many faces, and some feel like home.

This is book one in a series of interconnected standalones.

Although this book wasn't my favorite trope, I had a lot of fun reading it and was so grateful to be a part of this ARC. The prose is very addicting and fast-paced, and the spice is muy Caliente. It's definitely the spiciest book I have ever read in my 29 years of life. I loved the twist and action towards the end of this book, and I loved the Batman vibes. I think I just couldn't get past the "why choose" trope, BUT I can see others absolutely EATING THIS UP.
Again, I am so so grateful to Amber for allowing me to be a part of this ARC, and I honestly can not wait for more of her depraved writing!! I'll be looking into more for sure!

This book blew me away with everything that it entailed. The book was nothing like I thought adding to my interest for reading it. I enjoyed the men so much each had their own personality and story and their danger levels were off the chart. Our main girl was a baddie and seeing her advance and grow as the book went was so good and seeing her accept her darkness. The twists and turns of this read were amazing and kept me on my toes for sure throughout the entire read.

Celestina is brought up in a strict community, she is promised to Josiah at the age of fourteen he deems to mould her into a perfect daughter of the light with obedience but Celest escapes with her mothers help. She finds herself in a run down old house, but is all as it seems? Within these walls she is haunted by three beings in light up masks, taunting her, making her play hide n seek, but only after dusk and making her feel things she never experienced 😉. She is hungry, tired and angry to the point she starts to bite back. To her surprise her story takes a turn she never expected and in which she thrives though demons from the past will rear their ugly heads.

"ᴛʜᴀᴛ ꜱᴏᴜɴᴅꜱ ꜰᴀʀ ᴄᴏᴏʟᴇʀ ᴛʜᴀɴ 'ᴄᴏɴᴛʀᴀᴄᴛ ᴋ!ʟʟᴇʀꜱ,’"

I totally enjoyed the vibes of this book, the ‘haunting’ her was a different aspect and the camaraderie of them all was amusing. The spice was definitely 💯 I loved the fact once over the initial phase that they included her in their planning and she got her revenge.

Just wow. I was enthralled, bewildered, gutted, bitch-slapped, emotional and proud all in one.
Honestly, this book is an experience for which I cannot talk in-depth unless you read it. The plot centers around Celest, a victim of a religious cult in which she is betrothed to the narcissistic manipulative and control-obsessed cult leader that has brainwashed his followers. She manages to escape and as she drives through Vermont, her car breaks down, there's a storm brewing and she stumbles upon this manor that is old and decrepit. She encounters three masked men with three distinct personalities that are into the hunt and play hide-and-seek with her. The spice be spicing. There is a setting shift that left me thinking about it for days. The end is so satisfying and a big middle finger to the patriarchy and conquering religious trauma. Quinn was my MVP. So Deadpool-coded. I LOVE THE HUMOR. 5/5

Three masked men. One girl. One creepy gothic mansion. A plot that never slows down. Questionable morals? Actually, scratch that—you need the greyest of grey morals and a willingness to close your eyes and obey.

If you’re looking for three sweet, doting men who rescue a stranded girl and show her the world… this ain’t it. But if you want a book where they put her through the ringer—while also, uh, ringing her—then welcome. We’ve got spice, games, and just enough dark intrigue to keep you on edge. The pace? Fast. The chaos? Unrelenting. Every page throws something new thrown at you, and I ate it up.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

☆ Why choose? (3 guys, 1 gal)
☆ Masked men
☆ Cult ties
☆ Primal play/chasing 👀
☆ Hide and seek in a haunting mansion
☆ Resilient FMC
~~~~~~~
The story: Let me first start by saying: What the actual EFF was that twist in the middle???????????? When I say “yall had me in the first half” that would be an understatement. I thought this was a completely different sub genre in romance when I made it through the first half. Like woah, it was a full 180°! I loved it!! Ahhh I just can’t get over that twist. It was SO good!! The setting was a different story. The haunting aura around it was absolutely incredible, and I loved everything about the lore behind it. There was a story within a story when talking about that mansion. And again: THAT TWIST!! And the ending was so satisfying!! Incredibly great plot line, and so much adventure!
The characters: So. It’s a why choose… I don’t want to say the names of the three masked men because it’s a journey trying to figure them out. BUT THATS WHAT MAKES IT FUN!! Orange mask reminds me of Niko from God of Fury, blue mask reminds me of either Eli from God of War or Brandon also from God of Fury, and red mask Jeremy from God of Wrath!! But they all had such great and different personalities, and Ms. Thoma did a great job at separating them, and making them easy to tell the difference between. Not a lot of why choose authors can do that, (I say that lightly because every why choose is practically a 5 star for me lmao sooooo) and it was very impressive! And Celest was just a girly pop! She had her struggles, and I loved how she was able to find what she was looking for in life. After escaping her horrible past, she deserved what she ran into. (In a way, lmao)
The spice: OH. MY. GOSH. THE SPICE 👏 👏 👏 I rated this a 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 on the pepper scale. There were about 5-6 open door scenes with elements that included chasing, dubious consent, captivity, and other (hot) sexual encounters. I mean, come on. Getting chased through a haunted house by three masked men who become obsessed with you? SIGN ME TF UP! It was sizzling, spicy, and so so burning to the touch that I was gabber flassted at some of the things I read. “Inserts himself? Inserts himself where?” (Bridgerton) I asked that in practically most of those scenes. Also- did you know that the anus can open to about 15 inches in circumference? On a completely unrelated note, a raccoon can fit into spaces up to 12 inches in circumference. Not that those two facts mean anything in this case (I promise there is absolutely zero beastiality or anything to do with raccoons lol) it’s just a lil interesting 🙂‍↕️
ANYWAY! Thank you Amber Thoma for this opportunity, and I hope to read more in the future!!
4.5 for me. This was such a fun read! I enjoyed the MMCs so much but as it can happen with why chooses you sometimes have difficulty choosing a favorite of the partners and I can't choose one!!! I think this is more character driven (mostly Celest's) than plot driven but there is a plot, and the pace is a little fast, but it is a fun and steamy ride. I will say the feeling of the book changes about 1/2 way through and for me it was a sudden change and I kinda wish it had been a little more gradual. I loved the start of this book with its creepy feelings of a haunted house filled with these masked men who are chasing you down in a wild game of hide in seek.
As an FMC I enjoyed Celest because she grew up in a cult so certain things conditioned her to where she kinda accepted things a little quicker because they were the norm for her or on the fridges. So, some aspects of what was going on for her weren't new experiences like they would be for someone else who would be so shocked that they might fight it every step of the way. My heart broke for her and what she went through growing up, but it was nice reading about her as the book progressed seeing her slowly gain her power back with the boys teaching her to protect herself making her feel confident in herself.
This is the start of an interconnected standalone series, and I know who I am hoping will be the star of the next book so fingers crossed because I will definitely be reading it.
This book is about Celest who just escaped from her dark past but just when she started to think she was on her way to freedom she is caught in a horrible storm thus getting lost and eventually her car breaks down. Deciding that the best course of action is to try and locate help even in the middle of a storm she sets off to find help. But when she stumbles on a creepy mansion and tries to get help, she doesn't realize that this hidden within the shifting walls of this mansion are three masked men who love nothing more than a good chase and hunt. So, when they tell her to run and hide, she does because when they catch her, they promise to do things that will make her scream the question will be if it will be in pain or pleasure. She doesn't know and the more she plays their games the harder it is to remember why should run because one thing she knows is that when they catch her their wicked games make her feel like she belongs to them.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
🔥 Spice: 5/5
I’m definitely deep in my dark romance + why choose era, and this was already my 6th book in the trope… and oh my lord, I still want more 😏.
This book was entertaining, funny (especially thanks to Quinn 😂), kept me on my toes, and was spicy as hell. I’m not kidding—the scenes between Celest and the three men? Let’s just say… two 🍆 in one 🍩… 🔥🔥🔥.
At the beginning, I wasn’t sure where the story would go—and I loved that! There’s nothing worse than a fully predictable plot. A couple of twists you see coming? Fine. But the whole thing? No thanks. Thankfully, this book surprised me in the best ways.
Celest’s journey: She starts off as a woman groomed and sold by her father (no, not father—Dick 🤢). At first, she’s submissive and fragile, which makes sense given she’d just escaped a cult where she’d been trapped since birth. Her world was tiny, full of restrictions. Watching her open up, learn, and grow into her own power with each chapter was amazing 💪.
Beckett – the leader, control freak, focused (and hot 🔥).
Whit – the calm shade between two extremes, a true peacekeeper 🕊️.
Quinn – the funny, restless, ADHD-energy guy who can’t sit still but brings constant laughter 😂.
Their dynamic together was flawless, and when Celest entered their lives? Honey… these men needed her. She brought balance, fire, and oh-so-much steam 😏.
The ending was so satisfying. I’d been hoping for Josiah’s fate, and I was beyond thrilled to see him finally get what he deserved. Dickhead 🙄. And honestly, it’s terrifying to think that cults like this still exist today…
Final thoughts:
This book was a brilliant mix of dark romance, character growth, and nonstop twists. Celest’s transformation is inspiring, the trio of men is unforgettable, and some of the surprises (looking at you, gala scene 👀) had me flipping pages back just to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
Read it. You’ll love it!
Wow. I have so much to say but also, I’m a little speechless. At first this book was giving a why choose, paranormal, beauty and the beast retelling vibes… and I mean I love that.
But then, it gets so much better.
I do not want to share spoilers, because this book comes out this week and YOU need to read it. So my lips are sealed… but …
I love the plot, the twists. This author does flashbacks really well. I was sucked in from the first chapter and whenever that happens I just know it’s going to be a good one. There’s action, there is religious/cult trauma, masked men.. very morally grey men who mean it when they say touch her and die. This book had me gasping, blushing, laughing and crying.
I will spoil there is NO surprise pregnancy epilogue trope and for me that is a win. I thought this epilogue was also perfect, no notes.
Can’t wait to add more of this authors books to my TBR!
PS- I’m still trying to figure out my spice rating scale/universal .. but let’s just say this is SPICY.. if you like dark romance and why choose scenarios this was to me the perfect balance with the plot. But everyone has different tastes, so please read trigger and content warnings.
This book was a gripping, dark adventure that had me hooked from the very beginning! Celest’s daring escape from her strict religious cult and the arranged marriage she was being forced into made me immediately root for her. The tension only escalated when she stumbled upon a mysterious, crumbling mansion, where she found herself trapped in a dangerous game of survival. The three masked strangers who held her captive weren’t just menacing figures—they were lethal, alluring contract killers with their own secrets. Whit, Beckett, and Quinn each had their own distinct personalities, and their intense fixation on Celest was a thrilling mix of protectiveness and obsession. The chemistry between them crackled with heat, but what stood out the most was Celest’s transformation. After years of being controlled, watching her break free and discover who she truly was felt incredibly empowering. The writing pulled me right into the eerie, gothic setting, making every moment feel vivid and suspenseful. This was a dark, seductive, and completely addictive read. If you love gothic romance, morally complex antiheroes, and heroines reclaiming their power, this book is a must-read!
I'm always excited for a why choose romance. Add in hunting, chasing and having 3 obsessed and protective MMCs who have touch her and die vibes? You have me hooked. Celeste's attempt to escape her past leads her to a mysterious manor in the middle of nowhere, but upon entering, she's shocked to find herself being stalked, hunted, and chased by three masked men who seem to vanish into the shadows. Her trying to overcome her past and become someone she can rely on demonstrates remarkable resilience and speaks volumes to me. Together, Beckett, Whit, and Quinn are an invincible force, driven by their shared desire to shield and care for Celest. By integrating Beckett's protective instincts, Whit's empathetic heart, and Quinn's lighthearted humor, they make a deep impact on Celest. Having filled her with happiness that she has never experienced before. Finding a family of her own that appreciates her for who she is, rather than what she can offer, makes this book a five star read for me. Also the spice in the book 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I absolutely DEVOURED this book. I don’t want to say too much without giving away the story, but I love a FMC who’s been through some horrific stuff, escapes, and ends up finding out she’s an absolute badass with the help of some wickedly devoted masked MMCs. Three of them to be exact. I will say I thought I had this one figured out pretty quickly and then suddenly everything I thought I knew was wrong. The plot was definitely plotting and the spice (OH THE SPICE 🥵) just elevated it even more. Often times when there’s more than one love interest we get a lot of group fun, but lack the deeper connections with each individual. That is not the case with this one and it’s one of the things I really loved about the relationships.
This one if for you If you like:
The originality of the story was refreshing and checked all the boxes for me. Locked in a spooky house ✔️, hide and go seek with masked guys ✔️, consistent flow and an evolving storyline ✔️. They men were quirky and likeable. There were quite a few things about the FMC that were just super unrealistic. The biggest dislike for me was the authors writing style. The numerous grammatical errors certainly deterred, but no where near the insane amount of stock phrases used. The unoriginal writing really dampened a very original story. The smut scenes were great regarding the male detail, but the FMC did little to contribute other than saying "please" and "I can't" every single time.... I would still recommend for an exciting story, but you may want to reconsider for the lack of literary talent.
From Cult life to happily ever after
This book is dark and you should check those triggers. This book has a fun little heat meter or the smexy times too.
This one plays with psychological terror. Don't expect sunshine and flowers. Expect a creepy cult giving a 14 year old to a grown sicko, masked men in a haunted Gothic house that shifts on its own, murder, and kidnapping with a side of deranged love in unexpected places.
I loved the way the relationship came about. It's very steamy, filled with possession, control, and power. Watch the FMC find her strength and power in a way that allows her to survive the sicko who thinks she is his.
Seeing this listed as interconnected standalones makes me wonder what is next in this world. I'm here for it no matter what.
Spice: 2.5/5
I really enjoyed the storyline surrounding Celest’s past; her growth throughout the book was handled really well. The direction the author took with the guys surprised me, as it wasn't what I initially expected, but it kept things interesting. I found myself wishing the book had been written in multiple POVs; getting the guys’ perspectives would have added a lot of depth, especially in scenes where they were apart from Celest. The epilogue felt a bit too short, and I would have loved to see Celest fully embrace the darkness within. Wraith, in particular, was an intriguing character who left me wanting to know more.
Tropes Include:
-Why Choose
-Masked MMCs
-FMC on the Run
-Religious Cult
This hooked me right from the start, and I flew through it so fast (with 3 kiddos 5 and under, reading anything in a week is a feat)!
The direction it took was not at all what I’d expected, and it’s not often a book actually surprises me with anything. I loved that there was no waiting around for the action to start…Amber plunges you right into it with her fast paced writing and her enthralling characters.
I especially love that the heroine doesn’t become this blubbering, wallowing mess whenever her past comes calling - she feels it, she owns it, and she doesn’t hide it for a thousand chapters from her guys!
This book was all the dark, hot and heavy romance I’d hoped for and more. If all of Amber’s writing is like this, she’s got a new fan for life!
Deliciously horrific and spicy
This story has many layers.. it begins with Celeste who is running from a very evil cult… it’s here where it goes from a cult horror story to a gothic style masked men story with very high spice and a mystery that unfolds … then it takes it final turn that continues through this tale of a three man vigilante group that all fall in love with the lost Celeste and find her to be theirs with all that this entails .. it’s a continual twisted dark romance that leads down one path and then another..Celeste is a true warrior and with her men discovers her dark side and embraces it! It’s a detailed read that leaves no question unanswered .. it’s extremely well written and has a perfect HEA🖤 I hope you read this and love it as much as I did 🖤
Our FMC escapes from a cult and ends up finding an eerie gothic mansion where our contract killer MMCs live. They toy with her, she ends up being their captive, but these seductive games develop into something more. This is a why choose dark romance that will leave you sweating. I give this a 5 chili pepper rating. The mouths on these men will melt your panties off, as well as the unhinged spice.
The story is fast paced, violent, the banter is top notch as well. I will say this, if you're a dark romance girlie and if you've experienced religious trauma, this book will tick all the boxes for you!
Thank you, Miss Amber for the ARC copy!
I’ve been thinking hard about what I want to say with this one. First very very solid 4 stars! I enjoyed the book. In the beginning I thought for sure I was going to have nightmares. The trauma Celest went through growing up. Then the house and the masked shadows scaring her. I was a bit freaked out. Yes I’m a scaredy cat. When she finally became strong enough to offer her own game, it was like a switch flipped. The twist threw me for a loop too. Like how?! How did he know she would be there? Those boys though, they’re magical. Not in the literal sense.
This book was amazing! All the stars. Masked men, Why choose, Gothic setting, Hilarious banter, and super spicy.
Celest is escaping a dark past, just to be thrown into, what at first seems like, another nightmare.
Whitt, Quinn, and Beckett think they have captured a little thief and their mission is to torment her.
However, despite being held captive, Celest discovers she is capable of so much more than what she was forced to believe.
I fell in love with all the main characters and plan on adding this book to my permanent collection.
This book was good, I liked all the characters and the spooky vibes in the beginning & end. With the long list of trigger warnings I thought it would be darker then it was but it was just the right darkness level for me, not as dark as the lords books but the spice was good. It could have been 2 separate books a paranormal thriller or what it veers off to be. The spooky vibes were great I wish it would have stayed more in that vain, for my preference but the author rights up beat very well too. Author I would read again but would like to see books in both genres next time.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book was chefs kiss. It was the perfect blend of plot and spice. The twist in the beginning definitely got me as I saw it going a different direction.
It starts out very dark with the fmc stumbling upon a very strange house that seems to hold many secrets. She is immediately discovered and then hunted by 3 masked men who awaken the darkness inside her. While some dark themes pop up throughout the book it loses that hard dark edge about halfway through (not a bad thing just not how I expected it to go). The writing was very well done and I will be reading more by this author.
Overall a fantastic read that I recommend highly. Do check the tws.
This book is dark so please check your triggers before reading!
I enjoyed the second half of the book more than the first half. The second half gave me a better insight to the MMCs personalities. I felt like in the first half that we were never truly getting to know the characters. Especially the MMCs.
I think Quinn might be my fav. He is unhinged and I'm here for it. I truly felt for Celest. She went through so much! I was glad to see her get her r3v3ng3 in the end.
Masked men x 3 yes please
Okay I very much enjoyed this book. I love a good masked man/men story and this one didn't disappoint. I really liked the twists in the story line and the fact that there was so much more to the characters than just being masked men. A twisted but enjoyable HEA. I love the main characters and their different personalities. I am looking forward to reading it's companion book.
3.5 rounded up to 4!
Fun concept, takes a very different turn at the mid-point. Celeste is a good protagonist and I loved that she wasn’t useless.
Gotta suspend a lot of disbelief in the second half of the book which was pretty annoying for me at some parts. Honestly expected it to be much darker (on a scale of five stars simply for darkness, I’d give it a two.)
Quinn singing ABBA made up for all that though. He was my favourite.
This was such a fun read! The beginning throws you off because I loved what I was reading but I didn’t know where it was headed. Which was fun because I normally see where something is going. Then the plot really hits you along with the spice🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. Throw in some major trauma that needs to be dealt with and a strong FMC and you have a great story. Can’t wait to read more of this world.
