"The night stretched wide and empty over the Endless Expanse, a vast sheet of ink-black water reflecting the cold shimmer of distant stars. The sea was calm, its surface smooth as glass, save for the occasional ripple of a drifting current. The wind whispered through the rigging of the Tidebreaker, carrying with it the crisp bite of salt and the distant hush of waves breaking against unseen shoals."

Tidebreaker's Call by Shawn Connelly is the first volume in the Starweaver Academy series and an excellent YA fantasy adventure. The story has a Harry Potter-esque beginning with an infant, about to be orphaned, saved at the last minute by his mother by… of all things, putting him on a lifeboat in the middle of the sea. Even her words at the time:
“The ocean will protect you,” she whispered. “The sea always protects its own.”
They reminded me of Dumbledore saying that Hogwarts will always protect those loyal to it. The fact that this is a book based on academy students is another similarity. Of course, the parallels are minimal, and after a while, you realize it isn’t really Harry Potter on Waves but a story in its own right.

The orphan here is Finn Tempest. He is raised by loving foster parents and has a lovely little sister (both in contrast to Harry Potter) in a remote fishing village. He has always felt a deep connection with the sea, and the ocean seems to literally call to him. He gets his opportunity when Starweaver Academy comes recruiting in his village, and he becomes the first and only one from his village to get selected. Why? Because he has a special piece of driftwood that is of interest to the captain recruiting him. Thus starts his adventure. He must, of course, prove himself, make friends, and learn to work as part of a team with others who are misfits like him. The Tidebreaker is a legendary ship that has a strong connection with Finn.

“So, just to recap, we’re a group of misfits that got assigned the name of a ship most people thought was a myth. And then the actual ship appears out of nowhere and heads straight for our fearless, well, moderately panicked, leader.”

A fantasy adventure set in a world of magic and pirates is definitely my flavor. In terms of plot, the book delivers with just the right amount of adventure and plot twists.

Finn's sister Ivy is an amusing character and by far my favorite. I just enjoyed anytime I got to read about her. I also liked Lena Driftmoor and Rowan. There were a few other characters I thought could have been more fleshed out, but of course have to leave some things for the sequels.

The prose delivers occasional brilliance while generally being good for what it sets out to do. There were a few times when I felt the author was trying too hard with the prose. Overall, I would say this is an enjoyable and promising read. It’s the perfect ride for people looking for a young hero adventure in the spirit of Frodo, Harry, or Percy.

Tidebreakers Call is a speculative fiction novel set in a coastal world shaped by elemental forces and political intrigue. The narrative follows a diverse cast of characters as they navigate the power struggles between the Tiders, who can manipulate the tide, and the political structures trying to control or suppress them. Themes of identity, freedom, and ecological balance run throughout the story.

At its core, the book centers around the awakening of an ancient power that threatens to disrupt the fragile equilibrium of the world. As tensions rise, allegiances shift, and characters must choose between loyalty, love, and survival.

🌊 Immersion:

Tidebreakers Call offers an engaging and atmospheric world, rich with lore and elemental magic. The author does an excellent job building a believable universe, with vivid settings that pull the reader into a world of mystery and tension. The inclusion of maps and chapter-specific symbols adds to the immersive experience.

⏳ Pacing:

The pacing is deliberate and leans toward a slow burn, especially in the early chapters where exposition and world-building take precedence. It gradually gains momentum, with the second half delivering heightened tension and impactful revelations.

While this structure benefits readers who enjoy layered storytelling, those looking for fast-paced action may find the first half a bit sluggish.

✍️ Editing:

The editing is generally clean and professional, with well-crafted prose and minimal grammatical issues. Dialogue feels natural, and character voices are distinct. There are occasional areas where a line or two could be trimmed to enhance flow, but these are minor.

🎨 Design:

Visually, the book is appealing. The layout is consistent, and chapter headings are stylized with care.

⭐ Overall Thoughts :

Tidebreakers Call is a commendable work of speculative fiction that merges elemental magic with socio-political drama. Readers who appreciate world-building and character-driven narratives will find much to enjoy here. While its slow start might not appeal to all, the emotional payoff and intricately woven themes make the journey worthwhile.

Tidebreakers Call is a Teen & YA fantasy novel written by the author Shawn Connelly, published in February of 2025. It’s the debut novel in the Starweaver Academy series. It is a fast-paced, sea-swept fantasy adventure that delivers both heart and high-stakes action. Set in a vividly imagined world where ancient magic stirs beneath the waves, Shawn Connelly introduces us to Finn Tempest—a small-town teen with big dreams and an undeniable connection to the ocean. When Starweaver Academy docks in his sleepy fishing village, Finn seizes the chance to leave behind everything he knows. What he doesn’t expect is to be chosen by the Tidebreaker—a sentient, legendary ship with secrets of its own. What follows is a whirlwind of magical trials, rival crews, ghost ships, and a rising threat from the abyss. One of the book’s strongest elements is its found family dynamic. Each crew member—whether the fierce fighter, the intuitive navigator, the witty quartermaster, or the wise engineer—adds depth and energy to the story. Their camaraderie feels authentic and adds real emotional weight to the journey. While the book does dip into familiar YA tropes like the self-doubting protagonist and “chosen one” arc, Connelly executes them with enough nuance and heart to keep the story compelling. The world-building is particularly impressive—from the sea-bound magic system to the rich lore surrounding the Tidebreaker and the Academy, every detail immerses you deeper into the narrative. Tidebreakers Call is a captivating and emotionally rich adventure that strikes the perfect balance between high-seas action and heartfelt character moments. It’s a promising start to a series that I’m genuinely excited to follow—and one that leaves you eager to see where the tide carries these characters next. Highly recommended from my side.

From the very first page, Tidebreaker’s Call pulled me in like a powerful ocean current . The first impression? Magical and immersive. The cover alone sets the tone—mysterious, adventurous, and full of promise. As soon as we meet Finn Tempest, you can feel the call of destiny whispering through the salt air. The premise of a boy from a quiet village chosen by a legendary sentient ship instantly intrigued me, and the worldbuilding had me hooked like a fish on a line .

The plot is an exhilarating ride of pirate alliances, magical sea trials, and rival crews with secrets of their own. It’s got all the elements of a great fantasy—danger, wonder, and heart. The pacing is tight and every chapter flows like a rising tide. Connelly’s writing style is vivid and cinematic, with dialogue that feels real and characters who come alive on the page. There’s a strong found-family dynamic that reminded me of One Piece and the rich lore had echoes of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. You can tell a lot of heart went into crafting this world and its mythos.

Beneath all the magic and high-seas adventure, the core theme is about belonging, courage, and choosing your own destiny—even when the odds are stacked against you. Personally, I loved how Finn’s inner struggle mirrored the chaos of the sea—a constant push and pull between fear and purpose. Tidebreaker's Call launches readers into a vivid, storm-charged world where the sea isn’t just a setting—it’s alive, mysterious, and magical. At the heart of the story is Finn Tempest, a boy drawn to the ocean by an unexplainable connection. When the prestigious Starweaver Academy anchors near his quiet village, Finn's fate shifts dramatically.

Chosen by a sentient ship—an ancient legend reborn—he finds himself leading a misfit crew through magical sea trials, rival pirate alliances, and dark truths buried in the depths. With rich themes of identity, destiny, and found family, this is a classic hero’s journey reimagined on the high seas. A perfect pick for fans of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

1. Unique Premise & Setting

Combines magical academy elements with oceanic exploration, a fresh mix that feels both familiar and new.

The sea is portrayed as a living force—whispering, calling, and even empowering sentient ships.

The setting moves fluidly between mystical islands, ghost ship-haunted waters, and the magical halls of Starweaver Academy.

2.Compelling Protagonist: Finn Tempest

A classic underdog character—curious, brave, and uncertain of his true worth.

His transformation from a quiet village boy to the chosen captain of a legendary ship is both emotional and empowering.

Finn’s inner conflict, especially around leadership and identity, adds emotional weight to the adventure.

3. The Sentient Ship & Magical Lore

The ship itself is a central character, full of secrets, memories, and ancient power.

Adds a deep mythological layer to the story—almost like a guardian spirit bound by tides and time.

Magical sea trials, ancient curses, and “abyssal power” give the world its own distinctive magical system.

In Connelly’s sharp, sea-steeped debut, a boy pulled from the waves must earn his place in a world that doesn’t wait for the unprepared. Seventeen-year-old Finn Tempest has always felt the sea calling, but when a sentient ship from the legendary Starweaver Academy chooses him as captain, the call becomes a command. Thrust into a world of ghost ships, cutthroat crews, and runes pulsing with old power, Finn must lead before he’s ready.
The early chapters trade high-stakes fantasy for something quieter: salt air, fishing nets, crab traps, and the warmth of a home that isn’t Finn's by blood but is his all the same. These grounded moments make the book’s later magic hit harder. When Finn boards the Starweaver, it’s not a break from the world he knew. It’s a reckoning with everything he thought he wanted.

Connelly writes with clarity and restraint. His prose is smooth, occasionally lyrical but never showy. The lore is rich but never over-explained, hinting at deeper histories beneath the surface. This isn’t a chosen-one fantasy dressed up in seafoam. Connelly resists the urge to mythologize too quickly. Finn is no prodigy: he’s observant, hesitant, shaped by quiet resilience and small kindnesses. His leadership is earned moment by moment, mistake by mistake. Lena is a compelling foil to Finn’s quieter nature, and their chemistry hints at deeper interpersonal dynamics to be explored in later volumes.

While the plot leaves several threads open (runes with uncertain origins, a prophecy steeped in sacrifice, a ship that might think for itself) it ties enough together to feel complete. A strong start to a series that’s bound to sail far.

5. Tension, Conflict & Rivalries

Rival crews and hidden pirate alliances bring in high-stakes drama and unpredictable plot twists.

Ghost ships, dark omens, and sea monsters raise the tension and the sense of adventure.

Every character seems to have a hidden motive or secret, adding intrigue to every interaction.

6. Themes & Messages

Destiny vs. Choice: Finn must learn that being chosen doesn’t mean being ready—and he must grow into his role.

Courage and Identity: The book celebrates self-discovery and inner strength in the face of impossible odds.

Loyalty and Friendship: The strength of the crew lies not in magical power, but in their bond and trust.

7. Writing Style & Pacing

Shawn Conelly’s writing is cinematic, fluid, and emotionally grounded—perfect for both middle grade and older YA readers.

The pacing is balanced: action-packed yet thoughtful, giving room for emotional beats and world-building.

Vivid descriptions of the sea and ship make the reader feel like they’re sailing alongside the characters.

Who Will Love This Book

Fans of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, One Piece, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Fourth Wing.

Readers who enjoy stories with magic, seafaring legends, found family, and heroic journeys.

Young teens, older YA readers, and adults looking for an emotionally resonant adventure.

Final Verdict

Tidebreaker's Call is a thrilling and heartfelt beginning to what promises to be a powerful fantasy saga. With breathtaking sea lore, unforgettable characters, and the magic of friendship and fate, it invites readers to believe in the power of being chosen—even when the world says otherwise.

Tidebreakers Call is a very exciting and well-written fantasy story. The book is about Finn Tempest, a boy from a small fishing village who dreams of a bigger life. When a magical academy visits his town, everything changes for him. What makes the story even more special is when an ancient, magical ship rises from the mist and chooses Finn as its captain. From there, his life turns into an adventure full of magic, danger, and surprises.

I really liked the group of friends Finn makes. They are all different but stand by each other no matter what. There’s a brave fighter, a clever navigator, a kind quartermaster, and a smart engineer. The friendship between them is my favorite part of the story. It shows how people from different walks of life can become a family when they trust and care for one another. The part where the ship picks Finn gave me goosebumps. It teaches that sometimes, life gives you big chances when you least expect it.

The story is filled with sea magic, pirate battles, ghost ships, and old secrets. The world in the book feels real, and the sea seems alive, full of mystery and adventure. Some parts are calm, while others are fast and action-packed. The writing is simple, clear, and easy to follow. The author did a great job making sure readers of any age can enjoy this story without getting lost or bored.

I strongly recommend Tidebreakers Call to anyone who loves adventure stories about courage, magic, and friendship. It’s a book that makes you feel good, teaches valuable lessons, and leaves you excited for what happens next. It’s a fun, easy, and unforgettable story.

Tidebreakers Call by Shawn Connelly — I really enjoyed this book 📚. It’s about a boy named Finn Tempest who lives in a small fishing village but always feels the ocean calling him. When Starweaver Academy comes to his town, he gets a chance to leave and follow his dreams. I liked how the story makes you feel like you’re standing near the sea, hearing the waves and feeling the cool wind. It reminded me of my own childhood, when I used to sit by the water and wonder what was out there.

One thing I loved was Finn’s group of friends. They are all very different, but they work well together. There’s a brave fighter, a clever navigator, a kind-hearted quartermaster, and a wise engineer. It made me realise that good friendships aren’t about being the same — it’s about having people by your side who truly care for you. The part where a magical ship chooses Finn as its captain gave me goosebumps. It showed how sometimes life chooses you for big things, even when you don’t expect it.

The book has a lot of adventure — with pirates, ghost ships, sea magic, and exciting journeys — but what touched me the most was Finn trying to find out who he really is and where he belongs. It made me think about my own life too. I believe many readers will connect with this part because deep down, everyone wants to find a place where they truly fit in.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy tales about nature, magic, and people trying to do what’s right in a complicated world. It left me thinking about how small choices can shift big tides in our lives too. ⚓✨

Tidebreakers Call is a wonderful fantasy story full of adventure, magic, and friendship. It follows a boy named Finn Tempest, who lives in a small fishing village but always dreams of something bigger. When a famous magical academy visits his village, Finn sees a chance to change his life. What makes the story exciting is when an old, magical ship rises from the sea and chooses Finn as its captain. From there, his life is filled with dangerous journeys, sea battles, and secrets from the past.

The characters in this book are very well written. Finn’s group of friends is made up of people with different skills and personalities. There’s a brave fighter, a clever navigator, a kind quartermaster, and a smart engineer. Even though they are all different, they stick together like a family. I liked how the book shows the importance of trust, teamwork, and standing by your friends in tough times.

The sea world in this story is full of mystery, pirates, ghost ships, and magic. The author describes the ocean beautifully, and it almost feels like a character in the story. Some parts of the book are calm and thoughtful, while others are packed with action and surprises. The language is easy to understand, so readers of all ages can enjoy it.

I would strongly recommend Tidebreakers Call to anyone who loves adventure stories about courage, friendship, and chasing your dreams. If you enjoy books like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll love this one too. It’s a fun, exciting, and heart-touching story that leaves you wanting to read more.

Book Review: "Tidebreakers Call: Starweaver Academy - Book 1" by Shawn Connelly

A magical seafaring adventure serves as an introduction to the Starweaver Academy series, and it has the promise to whisk readers away into a world where destiny stirs beneath the crashing waves. Shawn Connelly paints a lush picture around Finn Tempest, a simple boy from Drift's Edge whose connection with the ocean draws forth an ancient conspiracy, menace from pirates, and mystical trials.

Finn's life underwent a change overnight, with the Rise of the Legendary, Thinker Esoteric Sense, from the mist, the Tidebreaker, claiming him as its captain. With his crew of loyal misfits an intrepid fighter, a quick-witted navigator, a kindly quartermaster, and a wise engineer-Finn confronts ghost ships, rival academies, and the haunting truths of his past.

Connelly divides his world-building richly cinematic, slipping in the nail-biting battles with tender moments of friendship. Leading themes of courage, self-discovery, and found family help anchor the story down from the adrenaline-pumping plot. Those who love Percy Jackson, and Pirates of the Caribbean and One Piece will find the thrills they know married with something new and magical with heartfelt twists.

The flow of prose is fluid, pacing is swift, and the ocean seems to hold a thousand secrets: this is indeed a glorious beginning to a fantasy series set to win readers' hearts. Highly recommended for adventurers of all ages!

Tidebreakers Call plunges readers into a world where the ocean is more than just a backdrop, it's a living, breathing presence filled with mystery, power, and ancient lore.

In his captivating debut, Shawn Connelly introduces us to Finn Tempest, a young man who leaves the safety of Drift’s Edge behind to pursue his destiny at the enigmatic Starweaver Academy.
What starts as a step toward self-discovery quickly turns into a gripping, high-stakes adventure layered with emotional complexity and magical intrigue.

Finn’s bond with a sentient ship—an entity with its own will and secrets—adds a unique depth to the narrative, transforming it from a simple hero’s journey into a powerful tale of legacy, courage, and connection.

Author's storytelling is both cinematic and heartfelt, balancing action with strong character development. 📖👌🏻

The novel's tension, driven by rival crews, supernatural signs, and hidden truths, keeps readers on edge while delivering a deeply personal story.

Themes of friendship, bravery, magic, trust, and self-identity run throughout, making Tidebreakers Call much more than a fantasy, it’s an unforgettable voyage of growth and belonging.

This is a masterful first novel that deserves five stars, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone craving a magical, seafaring adventure.
Prepare to be pulled in by the tide and completely swept away!!! 💫

3.57 out of 5 for me.

There are places where this feels like it might have been A.I. rendered. I screamed at the umpteenth person standing with their arms crossed their chest. Not to mention a few places where the same phrase is mentioned over again. Could DEFINITELY stand an edit.

But the world-building is very good and I loved the way the author took the advantage from the Chosen One Trope without just branding their MC being the Chosen One. That was clever and very much appreciated. After such a tremendous opening, I found myself looking for the MC's forehead scar. And I don't think it was a good idea for the MC to meet the supporting cast, begin a dialog with them and then have each of the assigned to the same crew after said meeting.

I also would have appreciated the path less traveled in the MC developmental issues. How many times have we seen the self-doubting and therefore self-fulfilling prophecy of failure storyline? In fact, there was something familiar about each of the crew members.

That said, I found myself turning pages with eagerness. It wasn't a bad read - but you could almost taste the potential for a bigger and bolder story. It was good enough for me to get the next book!!!

A Coming-of-Age Masterpiece That Stays With You,

Tidebreakers Call isn’t just a book—it’s an emotional journey that lingers long after the last page. Shawn Connelly crafts a world where the ocean’s waves mirror the tumultuous, beautiful chaos of growing up. The prose is lyrical yet raw, and the characters feel so real you’ll swear you’ve met them.

What struck me most was how the story balances heart-wrenching vulnerability with unshakable hope. It’s rare to find a YA novel that tackles self-discovery with this much honesty and depth. The themes of identity, resilience, and the secrets we carry resonated deeply—I found myself underlining passages like crazy!

If you love coming-of-age stories with atmospheric settings, complex relationships, and a touch of mystery, this is your next obsession. Shawn’s voice is fresh, powerful, and utterly unforgettable.

P.S. The audiobook preview gave me chills—can’t wait to experience the story all over again in Shawn’s voice!

Disclaimer: I know the author. (that is fun to say)

This is the first book, and it stops at a cliffhanger, so despite this not being "my thing" I will have to keep an eye out for the next book. If you're into magic, sailing and other ship-based activities, along with the old army/school tropes, this is for you. Finn Tempest is an interesting character and his development over the course of the book was fun to watch. The other characters are also well-drawn and memorably.
Plus, there are a LOT of redheads, which is a big selling point for me.

This book is a solid debut and one epic adventure and I actually recommend everyone to read it. The book deals with magic, friendship, trust, bravery and most of all finding yourself.

The book was very close to a 5 star, but there are parts that seemed repetitive. The description of crew members of the 4 crews every time was something I didn't enjoy that much.

Despite that, the story holds a promising start and I am excited to read Book 2.

Fantastic!!!

I love the Bermuda Triangle, and this book reads like one of the classic tales of the sea. Ghost ships, pirates, magic... My only complaint is that it ends so unresolved! Have to get started on book 2 and sea what comes next (couldn't help that one) because this is a real page turner!!!

for the love of Ivy

I wanted more of her! But it was Finn’s story, his eventual legacy, his life, his rivalries… if anything, you can see how some find it very easy to fall in love with the sea.
