Dray, Vice President of the Sacred Hearts MC, watched his mother die in a bloody hail of bullets at the tender age of sixteen. It broke something inside of him and he’s been pretty much pissed off at the world ever since. Worse, he’s done things since that time that have just broken down his soul even further… Dray doesn’t want to be that guy anymore. Then came Everett Moran…
She’s Been Burned…
Evy is having one of the worst days in the history of, well… ever, and she’s seen a lot of rough days. Raised an only child of a single father, Everett finds herself an orphan before she’s even old enough to drink. She knows a thing or two about loss and thanks to her boyfriend, she’s had more than a few lessons in hardship too. Still, she moves through life with a single minded determination to make her circumstances better… She harbors no illusions about life being anything other than what it is, so how in the hell could she have been so blind as to what her boyfriend Jerry was doing!?
Could the worst day of Everett’s life actually turn out to be the best thing to ever happen to her when she pulls into Dray’s garage? Could Everett’s arrival on Dray’s doorstep herald a new beginning for Dray, and heal some of his broken?

A.J. Downey is a Pacific Northwest girl living in an East Tennessee world who finds inspiration from her surroundings, through the people she meets, and likely as a byproduct of way too much caffeine. She specializes in real and relatable romance stories featuring that real-life kind of love that everyone craves.
Physical violence makes me uncomfortable. I still remember and recoil from a particular scene from 'Sin City' with Elijah Wood left to be eaten by wolves or the whole 'Passion of the Christ' movie. This being said, I am glad there is some violence in this book. It gives background and realism to the MC environment. And it is not overdone.
I like that it shows that not every woman is cut out to be with someone in an MC. Some violence comes with the lifestyle and a woman has to be strong enough to accept it. It is rarely an all-out shooting but it is there nevertheless.
I like the descriptions of the clubs, how they run, and what members do.
I like that, for once, there is some talk about how to ride behind someone on a bike. That always puzzled me in other books. Someone just jumps on the back and off they go... I have never been on a motorbike, but I remember carrying my cousin on my bicycle when I was young and it was definitely hard to balance with someone else. These are the kind of details I appreciate.
I have zero knowledge of Motorcycle Clubs (MC), and reading this book gave me a good introduction to that world. The romance is average, but the MC setting elevated the story.
A really good story. I still loved the first book more but this was a really good follow-up story. If more NA was written like this I would read more of it. The couple was young but had maturity in dealing with things and I loved that. They had issues but they were dealt with the best way they could. Well done.
I am truly loving this series, I love how when the H sees and helps the h, thats it he's gone, he may not know it but he has lost his heart to her. I like the fact that the book has very few pages that dont involve the couple, and although I preferred book 1 this book did have me hooked straight away and the ending was perfection!
Dray is a broken damage man. Lost his mom due to the club illegal activities back in the day. He blamed his dad and the whole world. Then a girl came crashing into his garage. The rest is what they say....history???
Everett is having the worse day of life. First, her car dies. Second her backpack ripped apart and the contents spilled out. Third, walked in on her boyfriend having sex with a hooker with no protections. Damn. Well guess what.....Dray is here to save the day!!!!
“I loved her. I loved living with her and when the time was right… I had every intention of making E.M.M., E.M.T. and heaven help me, she kept it up, I was going to need a medic!”
Loved this. I love these biker books where the biker is such a strong mean s.o.b until he meets the love of his life and this is exactly one of those. Dray was broken when he watched his mother being gunned down when he was only 16, and so he hated the world and everything in it. Along came Everett and they were what they both needed of each other. I loved Everett's attitude and how she was quite strong and wise as to her surroundings. This club is a perfect family for each of their members and they look after each other like a true family should.
Oh! how I loved every word, A.J did it again............I wont go into any details as I know I may be one of the first to read this book, would hate to spoil it for anyone.
Wow! I loved Dray and Em's story! Everett Moran has got to be one of the strongest heroine's I've ever read. And Dray just blew me away. After the first book I really wasn't sure I wanted to read his story, which is why it's taken me so long to get to it. So glad I finally did!!! Really looking forward to reading more!!!
This being the second in the series, there was some pressure to live up to the first. I've got to say I think it was on par. Not better, not worse.
So in this book, we have Dray, who is VP of The Sacred Hearts MC and Everett.
Everett has a tough time throughout the book. She struggles with juggling work and school, her boyfriend is a bum and a layabout, doesn't help with the rent and bills and expects Everett to be at his beck and call.
After calling her boyfriend and getting his voicemail, she is literally stranded, that is, until Dray pulls up and offers her a lift. After taking him up on it, she is driven to her apartment only to find the reason that her bf didn't pick her up was because he was balls deep in another woman. Cue a chivalrous Dray and a broken nosed boyfriend.
Dray let's Everett stay at his place, playing the hero. But is he really playing or is he falling in love?
What I liked about this book was that again the main story is based on real issues, I mean I have no idea what goes on in an MC, however I do know that in an everyday life, people get cheated on, abuse happens etc. I like the fact that the author touches upon these. And tastefully. I can't say that Dray really did it for me, he's a bit too meh for my personal tastes. I did like the way he was very protecting of Everett or Em as Dray calls her. I liked the fact that even though he didn't know this girl from Adam, his basic instinct told him to protect. Instead of leaving this woman to deal with her problems he took them on himself even through dealing with his own demons. And then both of them finding love together.
The character for me though that really sells the story to me isn't even the two main characters, it's the Prez and Dray's dad, Dragon. I love this man. Who can resist a silver fox? Not me that's for sure.
I'm definitely continuing the series, I'm going to dive straight into the next one.
WOW, even better than the first book in the series. I LOVE a great MC series, but great ones are few and far between. Beyond the romantic aspect of the story, my favorite thing about MC books is the brotherhood. Unfortunately, many authors leave this part out. NOT Downey. The friendships she writes about in this series is just as captivating as the romance (well, almost...).
I tend to like gritter MC books, but can't stomach the ones with brutal violence and rape scenes. This was a perfect balance. Definitely edgy, but there weren't parts of the book that were going to keep me up at night (in a bad way).
A lot better than the first book. It was a quite interesting NA book, which didn't have much of the MC stuff. The heroine cried a lot - she cried when she was tired, she cried when she was hurting, she cried when she was confused, she even cried when she felt relieved and it got very annoying. I also was disappointed because author didn't give the characters enough time to fall in love. It just came too quickly to be believable. But still I liked it a lot more than the first book.
Well this was a 3.5 stars for me. I still enjoyed it but I liked book one better. Just something was missing for me. I can say that I flew threw this one I just couldn't put it down. I just noticed on her Facebook page that REAVER is next!! Yay! Looking forward to it.
Truly wonderful story of two people crossing each others' path just when it's needed most. Once again I flew through a book that AJ has penned and I'm left craving more. Amazing way of expanding the depth of each character and making you feel a part of the MC...can't wait for the next one!!!
Since this is book 2 in the series it keeps getting better. You catch up with your favorite people in the MC but in this book you see Dray grow up and find love with Everett.
Dray and Everett story's was a wonderful read. Just like Shattered & Scarred I finished it one sitting. I truly enjoy A.J. Downey's writing style, and the way she has her characters interact.
Are you kidding me?! This series is freaking AWESOME!!! I think it gets better ever book! Excellent character development! Gripping plot! I loved this book. On to the next one in the series...
Broken & Burned by A.J. Downey Re-read 11/2/18 This was a re-read for me and I have to say it...the new covers for this series are so much better than the old ones. This is the story of Drey the VP of the Sacred Hearts MC and Everett. Drey meets Everett after she has had a pretty messed up day and like the hot, alpha dominate male he is Drey steps up to the plate and offers to help her out. I liked Drey's character quite a bit actually even if I did have to remind myself that he was young and that explained some of the reasons for his actions. Everett was a little harder for me to warm up to, in some instances I really liked her and then in others I wanted to slap her
And I absolutely did not like the dead parents talking to them aspect, I thought it was written really cheesy! Another great thing I like about this series is that it really is an MC book and you get a glimpse into that world instead of a romance about a man in an MC. But overall this book had my favorites which include HEA Hot Sex scenes Hot Alpha Male NO cheating NO Drama (between H/h) Great secondary characters
So this got 3 stars, Not 4 simply I believe because of the age and circumstances of the characters
Another okay read, though I did enjoy Dray and Everette's story, it was extremely repetitive. I think I read about her worst day ever like four or five times throughout the book when once is just enough and maybe a glossed over version as well. So just like the first book, while an enjoyable read, there were many bland, page skipping parts. Plus we get another dose of instalove in this book too, which just made my skin crawl. I was kind of expecting that though since authors tend to stick to the same formula.
What really had me questioning this book was Brandy's character. The girl was a first class twat, who was selfish enough to set Everette up and she totally got away with it. After the incident at the coffeehouse, Brandy wasn't mentioned again and that just pissed me off, I mean yeah they got retribution from Ronnie/Spaz for his role but what about Brandy? I didn't like that at all and it kind of ruined the last portion of this book for me.
In book 1, Dray did something that I wasn't a fan of. He This book takes place about 3 months after that. The author doesn't really get into that scene other than saying Dray didn't ever what to be that guy again and he made amends (). So this book picks up with a less pissy, attitude filled Dray. As he is shown in the book, how he treats the FMC is fine. He's not aggressive, pushy or an asshole. So, not too bad. If this was the real world, that previous incident would have been a redflag to me, but this is make-believe-world and so I was able to ignore it and move on. Descent story, would continue the series.
Dray is the VP for The Sacred Hearts MC. He lost his mother in tragic circumstances aged 16, since then he'd been lost, bitter and angry at the world.
Evy is having a shitty day her car breaks down and she takes it to Drays garage. Money is tight and she could really do without the repair bill. Things go from bad to worse after that and let's just say that Dray acts as her knight in shining armour.
Her worst day turns out to be the best thing that could of happened to her because it brings this Brooding Dark Biker who needs just as much saving as she does into her life. I'd say it could be fate.
I loved this story Evy is everything that Dray needs. She's fiery and doesn't scare easily. He childhood made her understand things that help her with Dray.
Fantastic series and I'm really excited for Reavers book. I love this guy already.
I was worried that Dray was going to be a total jerk and go back to the way that he was before. I worried needlessly, Dray is sweet and wants to help a total stranger.
Evy has had one of those days where everything that could go wrong, does. She's at her wits end and doesn't know what to do. She finds solace in the last place she was expecting. I mean Dray is pretty much a complete stranger but steps up to the plate to help.
Dray will steal your heart and makes you want to hug him. I wanted to give him a hug in the first book lol He's coming to understand this thing they call life. Let's not forget about his dad - big bad, scary biker with a heart of gold. *sigh*
I really like how these guys find women on their worst days and do what they can to make things better for them. It’s a bonus that they end up falling in love.
For most of the last book I didn’t really care for Dray, but he redeemed himself by the end. I was happy to see him find someone with this book. Evy was more than able to handle the MC and their life having grown up with an Irish father with links to the IRA. This made some of the normally scary things the guys did not that scary to her and her able to accept things. There were times she needed a bit of time to come to terms with things, but she put up a good front when needed. I liked how the guys back Dray up by taking time to explain things to Evy.
