Dr. Donald Smith is a storyteller, novelist, playwright and performance poet. He was born in Glasgow to an Irish mother and was brought up in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. He is a founding member of the Scottish Storytelling Forum and of Edinburgh's Guid Crack Club, and is Director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre at The Netherbow. He chaired the Committee that established the National Theatre of Scotland and became a founding Director.

Smith completed a Ph.D. thesis on Naomi Mitchison at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of numerous books, including a novel set in Edinburgh at the time of Robert Burns, Between Ourselves (Luath, 2008), God, the Poet & the Devil: Robert Burns and Religion (Saint Andrew Press, 2008), and the collection of poetry, A Long Stride Shortens the Road: Poems of Scotland (Luath, 2004).

Me compré este libro estando de viaje por Skye y, aunque ya imaginaba que sería una adquisición entretenida, nunca imaginé que vendría TAN cargada de contenido. Este libro no solo tiene historias de todo tipo, encima tiene una lista de personajes fantásticos que haría preocuparse a un bestiario de juego de rol. En sus páginas me he encontrado fantasmas, perros fantasma, elfos, hadas (con l Reina de las Hadas apareciendo varias veces), caballeros semielfos, drows (los auténticos, no los elfos subterráneos edgy de D&D), ogresas, magos, druidas, brujas (de las guapas y de las feas), demonios sirviente, a Satán en persona (varias veces) y también varias historias de asesinatos, hechos históricos curiosos (cómo acabó el cardo en el escudo de Escocia, por ejemplo) y hazañas de navegación poco creíbles.

Después de haber estado en persona en las Highlands no cuesta en absoluto entender cómo se inspiraban tanto los escoceses de antaño para crear semejantes historias pero, aún así, resulta impresionante la de cosas que me he encontrado. Y también la de veces que me ha pasado que la historia ya la conocía por otros lados. De hecho, muchas historias son versiones o alteraciones de algunos cuentos populares que, si eres ávido lector de cuentos como lo he sido yo en el pasado, seguro que has escuchado alguno de ellos alguna vez. Al final, todo el mundo de los cuentos del folklore europeo es una sola gran nación que va desde Rusia y Escandinavia hasta Irlanda y el Mediterráneo.

En general un curioso librito que me ha hecho más fáciles las mañanas al volver de mi escapada por las tierras del norte. No le doy los cinco puntos porque hay variedad de calidad de unos cuentos a otros y no todos son igual de buenos. Algunos cuentos, la verdad, son demasiado cortos... Los hay que tienen un final muy abrupto o que cambian de tema justo a la mitad. Se nota que han intentado preservar las historias tal como y son, en lugar de adornarlas y, claro: no todos los cuentos populares son obras para el consumo por escrito, están pensados para que te los cuente una persona que sepa contarlos. Eso puede hacer un poco decepcionante algunas lecturas, aunque hay otras que valen todo el precio que pagué por el librito (que no recuerdo cuánto fue porque estaba en libras y yo ya no controlo a cuánto equivalía en euros).

Aviso a lectores españoles: el libro, evidentemente, está en inglés y no es de fácil lectura. No solo tiene mucha terminología que no has leído en tu vida, también encima algunos cuentos están escritos fonéticamente como se pronuncian en dialecto escocés (con "wee" en vez de "little", "bonnies" en vez de "niños" o "dinna" en vez de "don't", entre otros localismos). Eso hace la lectura de algunos cuentos algo farragosa, he incluso he tenido que tener un diccionario al lado algunas veces, pero no son la mayoría del libro. Además, he encontrado el reto de aprender un dialecto nuevo del inglés muy entretenido, aunque sé que eso no es para todo el mundo.

Ahora mi única lástima es que no me compré la primera parte...

This book was very kindly gifted to me which was exciting because I read Volume I of the series about a year ago. I love reading stories about places so familiar to me. Especially as the many of them aren’t always featured in mainstream literature. It’s really interesting to me how much you can tell about the history and culture of a place from its stories, myths and legends. Like all books that are made up of multiple stories there were some I enjoyed more than others. But overall it is a really engaging read.
