This was so hard to read. 1.5 ⭐️
Clean/no spice, short story with lots of holes.
Short stories can be fun to read - but this was not. I had to reread the first two chapters because I was so confused. The POV jumped around and you didn’t know if you were reading from Noah’s perspective or Emma’s.
Emma apparently runs away from her wedding (why?? No explaination given) and her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere during a storm. No cell service, no luggage, no jacket, nothing. She jumps out and walks and happens upon a cafe. She walks in, everyone goes quiet and Noah looks at her like she’s a blast from the past but apparently he has no idea who she is and she doesn’t know him either. Someone speaks up and assumes they’re together (WHAT?!) and then the town gossip comes in and assumes they are engaged?! Meanwhile Noah and Emma never even introduced themselves to each other. Somehow Emma is wearing an apron, sitting in a booth sharing a latte with a townie and then she’s helping close the cafe & proposing decor changes and Noah’s all for it.
Mocha, the cat, is sometimes a boy and sometimes a girl. And he/she goes on a walk with Noah & Emma (no leash) and doesn’t run off. (Umm, has the author ever met a cat?)
The timeline is ALL over the place. The MMC and FMC barely talk, most of the book is kind of inner monologue (if you can figure out who’s POV it is) and when they do speak, they say the same things over and over with very unnatural verbiage.
When Emma’s ex storms in one random day, she acts afraid, and he is justifiably upset that she ghosted him on the wedding day. He asks for an explanation and Emma just says “my pursuit of happiness is mine alone to explain.” Then she thinks about her art. It is such a stupid response that doesn’t make any sense in the context because the reader knows nothing about why she and her ex (Lucas) split.
It’s like the author had the whole story of Emma and Noah in her head and expected the reader to keep up with her as she gave us random bits and pieces of their story.
This needs some serious editing.
