Playing pirate with her Captain lover in 1720, Anne Bonny never dreamed she'd end up a Sentinel, a soldier for mankind’s mysterious guardians, the Angeli. Now Anne will live 1000 years, but in return, she must hunt & neutralize Perfidia, corrupted Angeli who drain human energy to survive. Monsters are only half Anne’s troubles; her stormy love life would make Blackbeard pack up ship and move to Kansas. After losing his corporeal body in battle, Anne’s former lover, Con Carey, visits her by possessing the bodies of humans, often with embarrassing results. In the meantime, Anne’s complicated romance with the aloof Arch Angeli Michael has intensified; even as they square off against a new breed of Perfidia, possessing untold power. Can this unusual love triangle work together to protect the world from the cosmic horrors sworn to destroy it?

Angeli-The Pirate, the Angel and the Irishman is a wonderful story that plays with several genres mixing them perfectly. This story boasts everything from fantasy and suspense to time traveling with some history thrown in.
Our main heroine is Anne Bonny, a 300 year old pirate turned Sentinel tasked with the protection of humans and destroying evil angels aka perfidia. Anne doesn't do this job alone, with the help of her Arch Angel Michael, fellow Sentinel Con and assistant Jeffrey she travels the world tracking down evil. Michael is the handsome angel who has an off and on again relationship with Bonny, not sure how to or if he wants to have a real relationship with her. Poor Con wants to be with Bonny but has some issues keeping his hands on a body;). Jeffrey is very much the comic relief, he's young, obsessed with pirates and not afraid to pull pranks on our heroine from time to time.
The story starts out in the present introducing our heroine and what she's up to in the world today, but quickly slips into the past. For the first portion of the book the story stays in the past and moves forward quickly jumping from one event to the next. It's super easy to follow though because Mrs. Vansant has made them appear like journal entries providing dates and places so we know what's going on. During this time we learn how Bonny became a sentinel and how her relationship with each man progressed. i thought it was a wonderful idea to fill out the background this way, you get everything you need to know and see how Bonny changes over time.
Anne Bonny is probably one of the best, if not THE best Sentinel the Angels have working for them, but all her talents may not be enough to beat this new foe. It's present time and a mass graveyard holding hundreds of bodies is found underground, only problem is there's no way in our out. They're not facing another normal perfidia anymore, this monster is nothing like anyone has ever seen before. While everyone's trying to hunt it down and figure out what it could be, it's got it's eyes set on Anne Bonny.
Angeli-The Pirate, the Angel and the Irishmen has become a new favorite of mine! I love the mix of characters and the fun that comes along with them. It's such a fun idea to mix pirates, angels and irishmen together and move together through history and see what happens. Mrs. Vansant did a marvelous job creating a great story that leaves you wanting more. She's created a fantastic blend of mystery, action and humor in this quirky tale of a Pirate Sentinel.
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review, these opinions are my own. ;)
Well, Interesting concept to the Angels and how they protect or not protect humans. The female protagonist in this was bad ass and alittle sweet at times. the back and forth between her and Con was comical at times. I would recommend this book for a fun read.
I was given a free copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.
If it were possible I would give this story three and a half stars.
There are many creative notions in this book. The idea of angels trying to redeem their own kind that had fallen and falling far short of their goal was interesting. I liked the idea of a strong female protagonist. The idea that angels worked their chosen servants without being totally up front with them tracked well. Even though Miss Vansant had many story elements, perhaps too many, she tied them all nicely together by the end.
Brief (and totally unrevealing) synopsis: Anne Bonny had a very brief career as a pirate in the 1700's and was tapped by the mysterious Angeli, angels to us mortal folk, to work with them to help "reap" angels corrupted by a mysterious disease that turned them evil. But all does not go according to plan, and by the end of the book we find out that something else entirely is going on with the corruption of the angels.
To facilitate her duties, Anne, along with her fellow Sentinels, is given a 1,000 year life span, so by the time her story catches up with present day, she's only one third into that. But, she might not make it to her thousand years as she seems to be targeted by one of the Perfidia, which is highly unusual for the corrupted beings.
Add to this, not one by two complicated romances and Anne has more than her hands full. One romance is with her Angeli handler, Michael, a very self-assured and even arrogant archangel who is drawn to Anne. Their attraction is complicated by (implied) forbidden nature of their relationship and the fact that Sentinel powers include the ability to drain the life force of angels. Angels can do the same thing to humans, so you can imagine that when these two get up front and personal, real jeopardy is attached. The second relationship is with her fellow Sentinel, Con Carey, a brash Irish lad who was once Anne's Sentinel trainee. Their relationship is complicated by Con's unfortunate loss of his body during a particularly troublesome Perfidia reaping. However, instead of going to the great beyond, Con hangs around Anne discorporeally, occasionally hi-jacking an unsuspecting human's body so he could speak with her. And drink, because, um, Irishmen drink. Con, as you can imagine, is not happy with the present state of affairs, especially with Anne's on again, off again affair with Michael. Yeah, there is a little tension in the room when Michael and Con are both there.
With all this wonderful stuff, you wonder how things can go wrong in telling this story.
We start this story with Anne's present day life, then we zip back to her early history, then are fast forwarded 100 years to tell of the aforementioned troublesome reaping, and then fast forwarded to present day. All this time travel gave me a headache, (and pulled me out of the story.) IMO inclusion of key elements to the story could be handled in a less jarring way such as discussion about the events, or even Anne having a traumatic recurring dream about some of the events.
Additionally, there is some overwriting of the prose. Consider this passage:
Anne's new table guest sat grinning, thin and pale as an untoasted wafer, but with the fiery eyes of a rebellious imp eager to be unleashed. She'd known the minute she heard the accent that the boy's body had been appropriated by a friend of hers, Con Carey, who had lost his own corporeal body some years ago .
IMO, thin and pale is sufficient, "as an untoasted wafer" is going over the top. The revelation of Con discomporeal nature was handled offhandedly even though he is an important character in the book. And the second sentence is just too long. And it goes on like this through out the book.
Second, I had a difficult time relating to some of the characters, Michael in particular. I couldn't for the life of me see why Anne would be so hot for him. He seemed too aloof, too arrogant for me to warm to. Con was interesting and he provided some comic relief. One of the most interesting characters was the bad guy, who seem more developed than Anne, Con or Michael. Ironically, he seemed to understand more about the nature of the Universe than the other supposedly more enlightened beings. Sadly, I found the character of Anne just a caricature of the "bad-ass woman" who despite her superpowers had few real insights on her own situation. She was reactive, rather than proactive, acting as a tool for the male characters surrounding her.
Lastly, despite having 32 chapters in the book, the thing just ends without a real resolution. I suppose this is meant as a cliffhanger. But a real cliffhanger has you asking, "but what happens next." This ending didn't do that for me.
A great book has me reading beginning to end non-stop. I was able to put this down without problems. Not that it didn't have fun elements, it did, and it was entertaining. It's just that it could be better.
First off, I would like to say that I like this cover. I think it is unique. And unique is my favorite!
I think the design does well to show the characters personalities. You don't see that very often with computer graphic images.
The Story and the Characters: I really loved the idea that Amy Vascant had when it come to angles. Or should I say the Angeli. They are beings of energy, who's sole purpose is to protect the human race. Thoughts would enter there head for seemingly no reason. As they acted upon them, they ended up changing the course of history for the better. (Benjamin Franklin, for instance ;) ). I liked how the main character, Anne Bonny is actually based off the historical female pirate herself. Granted, I didn't know that, until I looked up the name and discovered that Anne was really a pirate. Vascant did an excellent job with her research, and I love it when books inspire me to learn a tad bit more about history--even when that's not their purpose.
I liked the love interested. The Arch Angel Michael and the Sentinel Con Carey. They were both very attractive in my head... Well, Con was when he actually started becoming himself again. Michael made me laugh at times. He's so OCD it's awesome. (This coming from someone who is also OCD and totally understands). I liked Con because he was the character that always had something funny to say--even when it seems there's nothing to laugh about. I appreciate characters like that, because I love laughing and I hate when things get so dark and dreary as if there was no hope. Hope is good, and in a way, Con was wonderful at giving hope.
The relationship between the Angeli and the Sentinels was interesting. Not including Anne and Michael's romantic relationship. The Sentinels are like, upgraded humans. The one thing that could actually destroy the Angeli themselves. Until now, they have worked in peace together to take down the bad Angeli, the Perfidian. Now, everything is falling apart. No one knows who is on the good side and who is not.
And I like when that happens.
I didn't see one of the characters that was introduced was actually one of the bad guys. I love it when I get surprised like that.
Overall, the story was great! I enjoyed it.
The Content: Well. As you know, I do not like the "F" word. Or bad language. I mean, I tolerate bad language, but when someone uses the "F" word I just sigh. Is it really necessary?
There's also a lot of sexual innuendo and fade to black scenes, but only really in the beginning. Before we knew a whole lot about the character's relationships. For me, it was a bit descriptive, but I also don't really read books like most NA with a whole lot of sexual activity. I rather read about the adventure, not the bedroom.
Conclusion: In the end, I did like this book. It was creative and the idea for seeing angels this way was fresh and new. The whole "energy being" intrigues me. I also thought the bad guy was pretty cool too. I always like myself a good bad guy :)
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Anne Bonny (yes, the pirate) wakes from a mortal wound and soon finds that she has become a Sentinel, a human tasked with the reaping of fallen angels, called Perfidia. She is good at her job and has a complicated romantic relationship with her boss, the Archangel Michael. She also gets visited by her disembodied ex-lover, Con, a fellow Sentinel. When a new kind of evil entity shows up, the three have to work together to stop it.
I loved Anne. She is smart and funny without being too snarky. She's a badass who can take care of herself in a fight. And, thankfully, she doesn't suffer from the Too Stupid to Live syndrome. While the fact that she is a legendary pirate is an interesting starting point, it didn't actually add much to the story. That's okay though because Anne is a strong enough character to stand on her own, even without the pirate backstory. In fact I found the exposition of Anne's pirate days in the first few chapters a bit stiff, but once she became a Sentinel, the writing flowed very smoothly.
I was expecting a light, fluffy romance but the book has a lot more depth than that. I would not classify it as a romance (and that's a plus for me). There is a romantic element but it's a part of the story, it doesn't overwhelm it. I appreciate that.
The Urban Fantasy/Paranormal genre is getting very crowded these days. This book is more toward the lighthearted end of the spectrum but it's not silly at all. There is a serious, entertaining story here. I have tried many of these types of books, always on the lookout for a series I want to stick with but that happens more rarely than I would like. I'm happy to say I'm totally on board with this one and I hope there's a second book before too long.
"Angeli - The Pirate, the Angel & the Irishman" is a novel that delivers a blend of genres that works surprisingly well. It's really unlike any novel I've read, with elements of contemporary-urban fantasy, mystery, and romance. It's set in various time periods and locations, from modern New Jersey to 18th century Jamaica.
Vansant penned an eclectic and original cast of characters. (Angels and pirates is not a combination that usually comes to mind.) My favorite character is Con Carey because of his spunky attitude and his strange existence (he has to inhabit someone else's body to communicate with others). The plot of this book is relatively fast-paced, and the mystery element makes you want to not stop reading. Because of the many points of view and time periods, the plot is very engaging.
Admittedly, I wondered how Vansant could juggle all the characters and locations. Thankfully, she did an excellent job making the story flow well and not get confusing. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the humor. There's a scene toward the beginning of the book involving my favorite character and Irish whiskey that made me chuckle out-loud. If you're looking for an eclectic novel with elements from multiple genres, I'd recommend this novel to you.
I’ll admit I was a little confused when I started Angeli – The Pirate, the Angel& the Irishman because it almost looked like there was an earlier book in the series that served to introduce the characters. However, the approach was just a clever way of introducing the story and the relevant backstory evolved as time went along, making for an interesting and fun read. Personally, I absolutely loved the characterization and it was a much more interesting romance than most, because of the way that the different characters interacted and the fact that there wasn’t just a simple solution.
The story itself was also very cleverly done and I thought the way that the story approached angels was particularly interesting and a great way to keep the reader interested and engaged. The story telling was interesting, and I liked the fact that you really couldn’t predict what was going to happen next either to the characters or in the storyline itself. I hope there is another book that follows on this one as it felt like there were some loose ends still to be tied and directions to go in.
Somehow, I managed to read Cherubim (book 2 in the series) before reading this volume but, I assure you, this didn’t spoil my reading pleasure in the least on both counts. Just like Cherubim, Angeli is a killer combination of romance, comedy and adventure that had me turning the pages thirstily to the last. Mrs Vansant’s storytelling is seamless and highly imaginative. There is no predictability here, nothing that you can guess or expect to spoil your fun, and the humor, especially the antics of Anne’s naughty companion, Con, had me laughing out loud all the time again. I have now read four books by this author and find it hard to pick a favorite. If you’re looking to discover a new author, choose Amy Vansant and you won’t be disappointed. The Angeli series is unique and I recommend it highly. I never thought dark fantasy and hilarity could work so closely together!
I was offered a free copy of this book on my kindle in exchange of a review. I really enjoyed this book its about Anne Bonny the pirate who gets turned into a Sentinel after she almost dies and has to spend the rest of her life chasing angels that have become corrupted. The story moved at a nice pace and I really enjoyed the characters. I especially loved Con but I have a thing for Irish and Scottish characters in books. I would definitely recommend it if you like paranormal romances. If there's a sequel I definitely want to read it.
Anne Bonny is a pirate who dies in a battle but is resurrected as a Sentinel to help protect mankind against bad Angels. Gifted with a 1000 years to live, the story follows Anne in her battles and the two men in her life Con and Michael. The story is intriguing and very different to other books I have read. I think the different ideas work well together and that Anne is a great character. She's tough and resourceful and a great main character. Well written and full of action and excitement I would definitely recommend this book to fantasy fans.
Angeli by Amy Vansant is an amazingly adventurous story packed full of unexpected twists and turns. With each new page - the fun loving, humorous characters are on the run from one grand task to another. The author did an amazing job describing each scene in this story – with so much descriptive detail; it was easy to visualize each new scene. If you like sci-fi / adventure / paranormal / romance – I highly recommend this book!
The book gripped tightly and didn't let go. I'm insistent on a second. like, yesterday. Amy pulls off the love triangle between her three main characters with delicious ease. Humor around every corner and danger as well. The story moves along at an exciting pace that left me hungry for the next step. I will be rereading this in the near future. What a fun book! And enticing story matter. High Fives all around!
DNF-ing this also. I'm not interested in reading books that are only romances with a thin layer of fantasy. I rather read a fantasy with a good love story that are not the only "interesting" part
Honesty compels me to admit that I didn't want to read Angeli: The Pirate, the Angel, and the Irishman. I'd heard that if I liked Buffy, then I would probably enjoy Angeli. Now, I love Buffy; and when I say that I love Buffy I mean that I stayed with it when it moved into comic book format. I'm that person. But I've also had the "Buffy fans will like it" line thrown at me, only to find myself reading some terrible Twilight-lite, just often enough to be jaded.
So why did I read Angeli? Mostly because I read Amy Vansant's blog and I trusted that, even if I hated the story, it would at least be well-written. And partly because she kept tweeting about it - persistence does pay off.
Angeli is the story of Anne Bonny who is one of a select group called Sentinels. These are humans who are granted special powers, including an extended lifespan, in order to hunt down rogue Angels (known as Perfidia) who feed on humanity. Angeli opens in the present day, then plunges back into the past to show how Anne became a Sentinel, and her introduction to Michael, an angel, and Con, another Sentinel, both of whom become her lovers. Context given, we return to the present, and the unusual hunt with which Anne is tasked. It emerges that this is no ordinary Perfidian, and moreover he has a history with Anne, Michael, and Con.
My first thought on seeing the name Anne Bonny was "Oh, like the pirate." I love pirates, and Anne Bonny and Mary Read are two of my favourites, so you can imagine my delight when it turned out that she's that Anne Bonny (I know it says pirate in the title, I just assumed the pirate would be a guy). Using an actual historical figure is a choice that could have gone badly wrong, but it's cleverly woven into the plot and acts as a wry comment on how legends are formed.
Arguably Milton popularised the world-view of Angels that most of the Western world subscribes to, and I spent at least the first half of the book grumbling to myself because "aren't fallen Angels essentially Demons" and "why doesn't she explain the lore properly"? As I got into the final third it became clear that none of the characters have this information - the creation and purpose of the Angels, and the reason some of them fall, is the mystery at the heart of this story. What had been my biggest bugbear became the thing I enjoyed most about the story.
There were a few unresolved niggles. I felt like the 'flashbacks' to Anne's history could have been interwoven with the present day story, as I'd half forgotten what had happened in Chapter 1 by the time we were caught up. I would also have liked an earlier introduction of Meili (and I think there's a mistake there as when Con is introduced we're told that his mentor Nathaniel reports to Michael, but later Con says that Nathaniel reports to Meili). I also had a little trouble understanding Jeffrey's inclusion - he didn't seem to add anything that made it worth Anne exposing her and Michael's true nature.
The ending tied up most of the plot strands, but some were left hanging over to future instalments, including the all-important "What's really going on?" While I don't mind a series, the best ones make their individual books feel like standalone stories. This feels more like the first part of a triple-decker than a complete novel, which left me feeling a bit unsatisfied.
Overall, I enjoyed Angeli and I'm looking forward to the next instalment. If you like stories which rework old legends, and don't spoon feed you answers, then I think you'll enjoy it too.

Angeli: The Pirate, the Angel and the Irishman by Amy Vansant
This is yet again one of those paranormal, even a bit romance(y), novels. I've come to realize it's not that much of a reach for me to be reading these; as much of the science fiction I read ends up reading a lot like paranormal rather than hard science; and, though I have a respect for the Simon pure Science Fiction, it seems that the novels that tend to lean in the paranormal direction have more interesting characters. For me it's all about the characters so this book hooked me. Anne Bonny is nearly immortal. Let's think something along the line of Highlander; I use Highlander as an example because this novel has a lot of world-building that takes the shape of darting back and forth through time in her life to give us a bit of scope of that life and some of the rules in this world’s landscape.
In the beginning Anne is just an ordinary girl. Well, maybe not ordinary, but the simple type that gets involved in piracy and other exciting things; until she is chosen by the sentinels to carry on with their work after they save her from her own self destructive path.
This is a simple world where Angels dwell and are here to help and guide mankind. But something has happened and a number of the Guardian Angels have rebelled and have begun to prey on the human race. Normally Angels do not or cannot harm other Angel; so when the problem becomes unmanageable the decision to use the human race to create a means to solve the problem creates the sentinels, who are able to disrupt the Perfidia-bad angels-from their earthly form into a spirit form that theoretically will eventually come back cured from their temporary madness. The sentinels are not able to kill the angels, but they are able to drain enough power from them to cause them to be dispersed from their; earthly form and it is not all that pleasant for the angel.
Anne is trained for this by Guardian Angels who are in turn guided by the higher Arch Angels, in this case Michael. Michael finds Anne to be one of his most effective tools and Anne finds herself working with him more often than most Sentinels; and she is inexorable drawn to him, because Arch Angels are made that way. But there might be more to the relationship. Still Michael puts her in the maximum danger; and eventually because of this, another Sentinel, Con Carey someone whom Anne cares for, is lost to the world and ends up as a disembodied spirit: rather than dying. And Anne begins to have second thoughts about her fated life with the Angels. All of her life she has been led to believe that only Guardian Angels have fallen and that might not be as much a truth as professed; and it may prove to be a deadly omission in her training.
And as if that weren't enough problem; there might be a number of Guardian Angels and Arch Angels who are having second thoughts about creating a race of humans who have any amount of power over them. One thing is clear; the war in heaven is not yet over and the battleground has moved to earth.
Excellent writing and character development wrapped into a somewhat typical paranormal tale that is only tainted by the length and depth of world building and back-story that have bits and pieces that are integral to the main plot and are rendered necessary in the long run. Overall a good read.
Not bad... Not bad at all... But I wouldn't really call this a romance....
Not bad.... Not bad at all... Interesting story ,interesting characters my only real problem is the description of the books, I'm almost all the way through book two as I right this and while both books are fun and interstate no tales of "good" vs evil per say and the Angeli or Angels who try to help us and police their own,my main problem is this doesn't really feel like a romance necessarily...... O there are say some sexy/"romantic" parts per say but they are always fleeting and barely seem to get off the ground before they are other and moving on to something else and while that's ok I guess,it does seem to work for the story.... It's not really all that satisfying in either book if your reading it wanting a romance that also happens to have a great story with it ,instead what this is to me,a rather interesting story that just happens to have some romance in it.... What's the difference you ask ? One has the emphasis on the romance and one has the emphasis on the story, but but a Really, really good romance has a beautiful blend of both .... Wonderful balanced and interesting MC's who are set in an equally interesting and engaging story... For me , whether it Anne and Con or Anne and Michael ,neither relationship ever feels like the center of the story, the Angeli and the battles they face to protect themselves then from the trouble they've created is Always the main focus the romance is just enough to help sweeten things soo there is more to the story than just fingering sick Angeli and the coming repercussions... I adore Anne and both her sometimes lovers Michael and Con and I heart hurts how their all denied either being with Anne or her with them because of the way things go 1st Con for some reasons and Michael ,well mainly just because things are the way they are ..but her relationships with both are soo fluid and subject to change at a moments notice , I honestly felt/feels more frustrating for me than it did them most of the time.... You know both men love her in their own ways and her them but like I said it just felt to fluid and subject to change and Never as important to the overall story as I'd have liked going in thinking I was going to read a romance.... As an overall story/series I'd rate this as a very strong B+ but between what I was lead to believe and what I wanted ( I.e. A romance lead story not the other way round) I give it a C+ .... Some goes for book 2 ,both solid stories but I have a sweet tooth and a let's say a romance " tooth" and this DOES NOT satisfy my romance "craving" by NO means... I totally recommend just not necessarily as a romance... But as a really good story with romantic parts...
I really loved the characters in this book. They were raw, gritty, and emotional. They were easy to identify with. I look forward to continuing this series.
This was a fun and fast book, with enough action, comedy, and tense romance to keep me turning the pages well past my bed time (and well into dawn). Though it played heavy on sexual tension, the actual sex was brief and more often teased at then in specific detail. The entangled romance between Anne, Michael, and Con was interesting but toned enough to let the main focus, the Perfidia and their like, really shine. It would have been disappointing if the romance had overrun such a surreal monster and the surrounding mystical characters. I loved the unraveling of what originally was described as a simple horrifying monster (the Perfidia) to more a more complicated, almost Lovecraftian inspired monster and its tangled web of allies. Interestingly, what started out as a light read by the end had darker edges that drew me in more. Vansant's take on roles of angels and their heirarchy was refreshing and not so religious that I did not understand the references (being non christian can be a pain when trying to undertand even basic context in a book). She did a marvelous job speaking from each characters point of view, enriching the story and sub plots without causing confusion as we jumped from one characters mind to another. Also, the main character,Anne, fits "the strong female character" role well, despite her occassional complaint about needing to be saved, she does plenty of saving, plotting, and out right kicking ass that her male counterparts don't even compare. Tossed in nods to various historical persons made me laugh visualizing the situations described, such as Ben Franklin passed out, covered in sleeping dogs. I'm hoping this turns into a series that will take us not only into "what happens next" but deeper into each characters psyche as well. If those edges get darker and more intense you'll hear no complaints from me.
This is the first book I have read from this author and WOW, it blew me away!!! I wish I had across this author sooner. This book is a major page turner and an addictive read, I am now dying to read the second book after reading this, and how it ended
I really really enjoyed the storyline, one of the things I loved most is how the story gives you snippets of Anne's long life, it gives you in an insight into who she is, her hopes and dreams and how she lives her life with courage and inner strength. She is a character that I loved, always love a strong main character who doesn't need anyone but also has a huge heart to those she gives it to. This is such a unique idea of a book and I haven't read anything like this before , especially when it comes to Con's storyline. I loved his character, I really feel for his situation and really want there to be some hope (wont say too much more about him and ruin the story) This is full of twists and turns, surprises on every chapter, it goes places you couldn't even imagine!
The way that Amy Vansant writes this world and these characters is outstanding! To me, the way to tell an amazing writer is when you feel so immersed in their world that you don't want to leave, that you just want to keep obsessively turning those pages to find out what more surprises come from the authors imagination, and this is exactly what you get from Amy Varsant and this book.
I really cant recommend this book highly enough, this is an amazing book and I am definitely a huge fan of this author and will be following her work closely, you seriously need to pick up this book, you wont regret it, it will stay in your imagination for a long time!
Humor and Original Twists Make Angeli a Joy to Read
Humor appears so infrequently in paranormal fiction, I savor it when I find it. Add an original take on angel-human romance, mostly well-developed characters, and a fast-paced, thriller-suspense plot and you got a winner, baby.
Vansant takes a historical figure, female pirate Anne Bonney, and plops her into a world where the angels, aka Angeli, fight to destroy corruption in their ranks, the Perfidia, angels who prey on humans for their energy. The powers that be have established a core of Sentinels who destroy the Perfidia, and Anne Bonney is chosen to join their ranks.
It doesn't take long before Bonney's non-conformist attitudes start pushing the boundaries, including a love triangle between the ghost of a former Sentinel, who died saving Bonney, and her archangel boss. The first part of the book traces Bonney's growth as a Sentinel until she confronts a super powerful Perfidia in the last part of the book.
The plot twists and turns its merry way to its delicious conclusion. Make sure you've a block of time when you start to read Angeli. This is the ultimate "one-more-chapter" book. My only quibble with this book is that Con, the Irishman of the story, is the least original character.
It has been a while since I have read a book this good.
This book was incredibly well-written. I really enjoyed the way the story was told and the character development. I absolutely adore the way the author described everything. As an author myself I struggle with descriptions but Amy Vansant nailed every single one.
This book is clearly a paranormal story, with a lot of similarities to Vampire novels, except with Angels instead. I really liked the unique take on the Angeli and the Sentinels, and the idea of a corrupted Angel who loses his mind to chaos.
I love the way the story was told, how it started in present time and then flashed back and gave a detailed but brief backstory on our heroine. Even though the back story was in reality quite short, I felt as if I knew exactly who our character was. It was a perfect balance.
And I think that this book had a lot of that. Balance. The plot was very well balanced, the characters were very balanced. Honestly, this was, in the simplest of words, how a book should be written.
As an author and a reviewer I am programmed to notice the flaws when I read, and this book did not provide ANY.
This story was unique, invigorating, and well-written. It held my attention from start to finish.
I received a free copy of the ebook from the author in exchange for writing a review. So here it is.
I went into the book completely blind, without any idea or expectation of even what genre it would fall into. Romance? Sci fi? Adventure? I didn't have a clue.
As it turns out, the book has a little bit of everything. The main character is Anne Bonny (the famous Pirate) who is essentially a human soldier for an angelic army. Without getting too caught up in world building details: she helps rid the world of evil, and in exchange is immortal. Pretty simple.
Vansant weaves a good tale with interesting characters, and the lighthearted humorous tone made it a good read for an airplane. That being said, I think I enjoyed this book more for its theory than execution. The characters and world building were great, but the book fell short for me in its writing and pacing. I still liked it (as is apparent from my rating), but the narrative shortcomings often distracted me and pulled me out of the reading experience.
I honestly think this book would make a great start of a TV show. I would watch the hell out of the three leads, that's for sure.
I read this as apart of the Kilty Pack II (Books 4-6) set.
Kilty History is just that, a history but not of Catalonia and Broch, but of Anne and Con and Michael. As such, I really felt like this story belonged outside of the series. It wasn’t a fun read, especially as I read this coming of America’s 2020 election.
It felt like forever reading it and I had to struggle not to jump ahead. The story starts of well enough but almost immediately jumps into the backstory of Anne. That takes up a huge chunk of the story and ends with the last chapter or so with Anne and Broch that feels more filler than actual story.
Maybe it’s good that I am stepping away from this series for awhile, because the ending doesn’t entice me to read more. The only really happy parts were the ones Cat and Broch were in and that was only like 4 chapters at the most of 39.
I enjoyed so much about this book. Amy Vansant is a good writer. She understands the characters and adjusts the plots accordingly. This is a really good book. What it is not, however, is a product of the Kilty Series. Although it is titled as book 6 in the Kilty Series, it has almost none of my favorite characters, none of the plot lines that I love, and an entirely different set of super-natural monsters that don't fit the series. Basically Anne is telling her history to Broch and Catriona. Fun, sure, but not what I was looking for when I purchased book 6 in the Kilty Series. I am happy to have read it in its own right, just not as part of Cat's story. I almost fear where they will take her from here. The monsters are much more frightening, and deadly, in this book.
I received this as an arc for an honest review, come to find out I also purchased this book in February . Now I may or may not post spoilers so read on if you dare!
Now, this starts out in the future but then quickly goes to the past. It is twisted in some of its thinking. Not twisted in a bad way just in a different way of thinking how angels really are.
How even angels get sick. Can be bad guys and gives a whole new twist in history over what we know it. I have to say this was a thought provoking book. It will make you think, it is extremely complicated. It is written so well you do not see the twists till they knock you for a loop.
I found this book to be exciting, entertaining and engaging. What a book!!!
Absolutely brilliant book! Intrigue, treachery, and a love triangle between a pirate, an angel, and an Irishman. What's not to love?
Anne Bonny left her husband, took up with a pirate, became one herself (for a day and a half), and met a strange woman pulled from the ocean who changed her life forever. Or, well... At least a thousand years or so.
Join Anne, her boss (the Archangel Michael), angel enforcer named Con - an Irishman who currently has no corporeal body, an assistant with a penchant for playing nasty pranks on her, and you have a fun, sexy, action packed romp thru an Urban Fantasy world weaved by the incomparable Amy Vansant that is extremely hard to put down once you've started it.
A departure from what I consider time travel, this is an entertaining story about angels. There are Archangels (Angelum singular, Angeli plural), Guardian Angels and Sentinels. The story begins with Anne Bonny (yes, the pirate). When she is killed in a sea battle, she awakens to find that she has been assigned the duties of a Sentinel.
From that point, the story skips from time and place to time and place where Anne has been assigned a task. There are many other characters, of course, including corrupted angels, called the Perfidia, which the Sentinels are tasked to capture.
Do not fear; there is plenty of corruption, betrayal and danger to go around. And just think of all the angels you'll get to meet.
