Whiskey & Oats

Rate this book
Streamer Griffin Oats is used to both having an audience and getting what he wants.
He's met his fair share of interesting people online — but nothing, nothing, could have prepared him for stumbling upon Whiskey.

A smooth, elusive voice that immediately captures both Griffin's and his chat's full attention.
Griffin never planned on falling for someone he met online — let alone a mysterious, brilliant musician who seems to want anything but the spotlight of his stream.

But one song, one laugh, is all it takes.

The banter and sparks are just too good to resist, and Griffin soon finds himself falling — unable to let go of a person he has yet to meet, and whose name he doesn't even know.
But not everything is always what it seems. And the truth is — not all games can stay online forever.

Whiskey & Oats is an emotionally charged story about isolation, family scars, and accepting the love we don't realize we deserve.

This is a good one. It's two gamers, Griffin Oats and "Whiskey" that meet online while Griffin is live-streaming to his viewers. There's a lot of banter when they meet, and its egged on by the audience watching Griffin. As soon as I was made aware of the premise, I jumped on this. I'm a gamer myself, and this just checked all the boxes.
Griffin is such a great character, right from the beginning youre rooting for him. He's extremely nice (too much for his own good, imo) and I just kept reading to see him get his happy ending. After all the banter online, all the pining, texting, and coaxing to get Whiskey to come out of his shell, they do meet in person and its pretty satisfying when they do. The spice is kept to a minimum, which is fine, its not that kind of story. Its very sweet, quick, not graphic but you get the idea. Its wonderful actually.
However, once we get to the very end, things started to not work for me. Without going into spoilers, there is an antagonist of this story. One that is unavoidable due to forced proximity, and it kind of hindered my enjoyment of the story. And its not because its bad–the twist actually caught me off guard and was very gripping.
But the way it was executed made Griffin feel like a punching bag.
There's nothing wrong with the relationship between Griffin and Whiskey, they were fine. But the plotline Griffin is unfortunately dragged into, was not a fan, only because it felt very disrespectful to Griffin and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
All in all, very quick, enjoyable read about two cute gamers who fall in love online. What's not to love about that? Also, this book is written in 3rd person. Finally. It's my preferred perspective and it was refreshing to find a romance I loved that used it.
Highly recommend personally, just be prepared for a potentially messy resolution. Didnt work for me, but other people may not care. I'm just very sensitive! 😅 Probably why I didn't like Whiskey flipping off Griffin the whole time but I guess thats his sense of humor so I'll give it a pass.

Spoiler thoughts:

Starting with what I loved, what makes this romance for me is the fact that it starts when neither one of them knows what the other looks like. And eventually, since Griffin streams, Whiskey sees Griffin, but Griffin never sees Whiskey.
It makes their love/connection that much more intense, especially with the spicy session they have over videocall where Whiskey hides his face, but not what hes doing (if you know what i mean) then you have Griffin talking him through it–very hot stuff. On top of that, Griffin is able to recognize Whiskey by his voice in person and not by face. Him falling in love with his singing voice and using that to match the face to the name, come on, you gotta love it. I also loved Griffin's mom as well, she was awesome.
What wasn't awesome was Kieran.
Yeah, no.
Absolutely not.
The twist of him recognizing Whiskey as his brother on Griffin's stream—BRILLIANT! I was in shock, and then I thought, yeah that makes a lot of sense. It was very much set up beforehand and I couldnt guess it. Props to the author for that.
However, Kieran is what we can call, a narcissist. And he completely ruined the ending for me. At first he seemed very cool, and I appreciated his character. Then we know more about him and you think, aw man, this poor hurt guy, hes probably misunderstood.
Maybe we're supposed to think that? I went back and forth with my rating (4⭐️ or 5⭐️) for this book for more than a week actually (Yes, this book lived with me long after I read it)
Because I wasnt sure whether the author intended for us to hate or like Kieran. The story sets up his redemption arc with Whiskey, however, Im not sure he did redeem himself. He certainly did for the characters, Griffin and Whiskey, but me, the reader? Absolutely not.
Kieran was completely inconsiderate, impatient, obnoxiously selfish and treated his feelings more important than Whiskey (the brother he traumatized with all his outbursts) and Griffin (His roommate, who he's violating the space, privacy and relationship towards Whiskey) Then after Whiskey and him talk it out (After Kieran kicks down his front door and drags him to his and Griffin's home) both characters forgive him, which would be fine, if Kieran took responsibility for his behavior.
But he doesn't. He believes his behavior was justified to "fix" the problem.
Yeah, problem's fixed. That doesnt mean the exceution was justified. In fact, hes lucky Whiskey and Griffin forgave him after his unacceptable behavior.
I understand why Whiskey left. And I understand why he avoided him after learning Kieran was Griffin's roommate.
To top it all off, Griffin does not even get an apology for Kieran completely disrupting his peace in his own home.
Kieran gives him a "We good?"
And Griffin, bless his heart, just goes "Yeah!"
(Remember when I said Griffin is too nice for his own good?)
That is not an apology. That tells Kieran, he can do whatever he wants in Griffin's house, and Griffin will just be a doormat to his recklessness.
If Kieran was treated like the villain he is, I'd see nothing wrong with this story. But he isn't. He's treated like this savior of his and his brother's relationship and its just...no. its @busive. And as a domestic @buse survivor, I dont feel that the story made it clear how in the wrong he was, as he basically gets off scot-free, not even a slap on the wrist. There's this moment at the end where the 3 of them are at a campfire that's supposed to be really cute and cathartic, but I was just left thinking–why is this a-hole still here? (However the art included for this scene is BEAUTIFUL, there are lots of art pieces throughout the book that are incredibly well done.)
That aside, the romance was cute. The twist was solid. And they end up in a good place in the end.

This was such a unique story to me. The MMC is a gamer/streamer who meets his love interest while playing an online game. Their banter combined with the chat on the stream had me dying laughing. The relationship development between Whiskey and Oats was top tier, I couldn’t get enough!! The playlist provided by the author truly brought this story to life!! This book has hurt/comfort, spice, sparks, and lots of laughs!!!

This story was a really unique premise that was fun to read but was let down by poor editing. It has potential to be exceptional. It is still worth a read for the novelty of the story alone just don’t get hung up on the mild inconsistencies and the repetitive cooing. Yes you read that word correctly.

What a wonderful surprise of a book
Sometimes you just have to trust the booktok algorithm! What a great book and a perfect palate cleanser after reading some pretty dark stuff recently. The joy from Griffin and his ‘chat’ radiates from each page - what a wonderful community to be apart of!
