I was hesitant going into this book. I'll admit time travel books are not usually my thing. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
CHRONOS seems like the perfect entertainment business. Who wouldn't want to travel back to their favourite historical moment? The rules were clear and it seemed many precautions were put in place to try to protect the timeline. This book was exploring time travel in a similar way that Crichton dealt with dinosaurs. Just because we can do something scientifically- should we?
The military aspect and the human element to this story was great. I felt horrible for Richard was constantly between a rock and a hard place. His invention required backing but in taking military funds he started to lose control over the project. The rounding up and experimentation on Strays was brutal and I kept questioning how much about the projects on the military site did Richard know about.
Favourite character was either the collective of the Strays or Bill. Bill is just an ordinary guy who is trying to do what is right. He is honourable, smart, self-deprecating and having issues with his wife. I'm rooting for him. A boon to this book is Alex. A kind leader who is intelligent, thoughtful and helpful to those in need. That they are non-binary might be the least interesting thing about them. It was normal and just fit into the story (though I did a double take at first with the pronouns). Absolutely fantastic.
I didn't like Marsh and don think I was supposed to. But I really didn't like Leto. At first I was sympathetic to her. But the more people she hurt the less sympathy I had. Those are other people's husbands, brothers, fiancés, sons, friends. Why do they matter less than your child? Especially when they are unaware of that going into Chronos is producing Strays. Perhaps this will change in the next book.
On that note, great book and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series. I'd recommend it to young adults and adults who enjoy questioning the ethics of science and enjoy a bit of suspense with their reads.

Out of Time by Derek Gagnon is a thought-provoking and fast-paced novel that blends suspense with life lessons. What stood out for me is how the story explores resilience, choices, and living with purpose - themes that are so necessary for teens. Derek Gagnon was a guest on the Holistic Wealth podcast and generously shared the inspiration behind the book as well as the challenges the characters face, like toxic relationships and fear of the unknown - all issues that teens face on a day-to-day basis. A must-read for teens, parents, and anyone who enjoys gripping stories with a deeper message.
