Welcome all to Maquintock Bay. A sleepy little town a few hours north of Boston on a picturesque stretch of New England coast. The town’s folk live a quiet life away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the simpler life, even if just north of them dwell the infamous Oswald family. The Oswald Estate is only minutes north of the town but most people avoid it. The town’s history tells of witches and supernatural events at the stately mansion. Is there truth to the rumors? Witches aren’t real, are they? Prodigal son William Oswald Blackthorne has come home to take his place as head of Oswald House and his family. He sets about renovating and repairing his family home since it had fallen into disrepair. All seemed to be going well until he butted heads with his obstinate siblings, an overbearing aunt and the opinionated staff. Just when he thought everything was hitting its stride, Rushford Harrington ,the head of the construction company, refuses to send his men to the house. Who the hell does the man think he is? No one tells an Oswald ‘no’! Rush Harrington has his hands full. His workers are frightened. The gossip about Oswald House has made it near impossible to find workers to do the renovations his company promised. Now the Oswald family members are making his life crazy with abrupt changes to the renovation plans. When he attempted to talk to William Oswald Blackthorne, the man refused to speak to him. So Rush pulled his teams. Next thing Rush knows, a handsome and irate blond man barges into his office and into his life; Rush realizes that nothing is ever going to be the same!
Mathew Ortiz was born in Nuremberg Germany in 197O, the son of a Army man and his Hungarian wife. Spending only two years in Germany, his family relocated to Fort Smith, Arkansas. Here is where he attended primary school and college, obtaining a degree in Nursing. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona meeting his partner Tim there. Matt and Tim relocated to Orlando, Florida in the early 2000s. Mathew had been published in a collective arts magazine in college. Coupled with his love of reading, he wrote his first novella in early 2012. He continues to write, honing his 'voice' and enjoying the responses, both postive and negative, to his work.
My head is in the wrong place to write a good review but safe to say I loved it. I loved the whole concept and I do hope there are many more books to come (perhaps a glossary of the different magical abilities might be helpful in future books :-) ). Also I was very excited to FINALLY find out where two of my favourite characters from the authors first series got their baby from although it only had a very tenuous connection to the main story. But I don't care cos now I know lol
The good: I loved the story & the characters. I want to know more & read more about these awesome witches.
The bad: This book could have been easily 4 or 5 stars for me but I couldn't get pass the editing, paragraph formatting, & kindle formatting.
The WTF: The epilogue. Um.. What was the point; it wasn't really an epilogue. Will these characters play a part in the series? They're not in the second book.
Avaritia is the start of a new series for Mr. Ortiz. Along the way we do have mini-flashbacks into some of his previous works, particularly in the epilogue, which frankly confused even me, and I think I’ve read all, or almost all, of his prior works. The switchover from the Oswald Witches back to the characters from his “Renovating Love” series was too dramatic of a cut-away for me. Therefore, I’ve decided to base my review on the primary story and ignore the epilogue in my rating, since it would hurt the overall score.
Three hundred years ago a terrible thing happened in Maquintock Bay, a picturesque New England village. Driven by a man named Bartholomew Harrington and other fanatics, three boys of the Oswald family were captured and hung as witches. On their dying breathes, each made a curse. William, the oldest, cursed the Harrington Family and all their descendants to a life of misery, never knowing peace until they do right by the Oswald family. Duncan, the middle child, cursed Ezekiel Abramson, his bondmate, who wasn’t there to save him. Oliver, the youngest of the three cursed Maquintock Bay, that all should fail and fall. After hearing their curses, Bartholomew Harrington rushed to pull the handle, hanging the witches and getting rid of the abominations once and for all. Well, except for the father, mother and youngest child Jaime who will come back to make the township of Maquintock Bay wish it had never been founded.
Skip forward to the present. The Oswald family has done very well for themselves over the years. They now own, or control, most of Maquintock Bay and its environs. They are, by far, the wealthiest family in the town, and they are witches. Since no one believes in witchcraft any longer, no one in town suspects that aspect of the Oswald family. However, after close to three hundred years of bad luck, the Harrington family and the founding families have a deep seated dislike for the Oswalds.
William Oswald has just returned home. His primary witch’s power is over electricity, making him able to become a computer guru, developing some of the best security programs on the planet. While other programmers have to look through code manually, he can “see” the code from the inside. William has decided to spend some of his personal money on restoring the family home to its former glory, and the only company that would take the bid was the Harringtons!
What will happen when William meets Rush Harrington, and they are both instantly attracted? Is it possible that Rush is his bondmate? A Harrington??? Trust me, the Harrington family isn’t happy about it either! What will happen when Rush finds out there really are witches in Maquintock Bay?
One note for my readers, take my advice. Read to the end of the actual book and put it down to reflect on the story. When you have a few minutes later, pick it back up and read the Epilogue, which as I said at the start of this review has almost nothing to do with this current storyline. It is good on its own and deserves its own chance to catch your attention! It does provide a tenuous tie between the two series by making one of the servants at the Oswald Estate the aunt of one of the characters from the previous series. But yeah, not enough of one to make up for the sudden shift.
I really enjoyed this book. If you are a fan of movies like Practical Magic and Hocus Pocus, you will love it. I particularly enjoyed the reference to “I put a spell on you”. Since Winifred in Hocus Pocus was back after 300 years, I thought it was fitting! Great job Mr. Ortiz. I highly recommend this book. I’m off to read the next book in this series, Luxuria. Look for my review on that book later this month!

I grew up watching classic TV shows like Bewitched, Dark Shadows and my all time favorite, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I loved them because they were funny, saucy, and there was always a little undercurrent of danger. Matthew Ortiz’s Avaritia evokes the spirit of fun in these shows, and the book took me back to my childhood. Plus, with two hot guys as the leads, it was just pure fun to read. And yes, I am a huge fan of Mr. Ortiz’s and read his books as soon as they come out.
Like any good story, there must be a good foundation, and this one has it. I’m not sure how to review it without giving away spoilers, but I’ll try. And I’m probably going to leave a lot of stuff out, but this way you’ll have more fun when you read it!
It all starts with a witch hunt and a curse. The Oswald family is a family of very powerful witches who are revered in both the supernatural and human world. Their history goes back to antiquity. In the 1600s, during the New England witch trials, three Oswald brothers were murdered, but before their deaths, they cursed the town and their killer’s descendents. Fast forward to the present, the brothers are reincarnated as their modern day ancestors. But, there is a twist: the eldest brother, William, falls in love with Rush Harrington. He’s not only an ancestor of one of the killers but is also part of the family that was cursed. And not only that but every time Rush gets near William, William’s witch senses kick into overdrive. This can only mean one thing, they are bond mates. Oops!
Both men are hot and hotheaded. They are strong men who are always in control and get what they want, but when they get together, control goes out the window and that’s why they are perfect together. They push each other’s buttons in all the right ways. Yes, I’m leaving out a bunch of stuff, but you’ll have to read the book to get everything else. There’s just too much material in this rich story to put into a review.
A quick mention to the supporting characters, too. There are too many to write about, but as with all of Mr. Ortiz’s characters, they complement the story and bring a whole different dimension to it. As for the Oswald family itself, and the 4 siblings (one is a girl), I just can’t wait to read about them. Particularly Duncan because it seems he’s got a kink going on! Wish they where my siblings and we could turn people into frogs together! LOL
One of the plot lines is the curse and its dissolution, and another other one is that someone or something sinister is trying to hurt the Oswalds. A force who wants their power, as well as the ultimate destruction of the Oswalds. Both are resolved and our heroes live happily ever after. Or so we’re told until the next book. Can’t wait for it!
I love Mr. Ortiz’s writing style. Even though Avaritia is written in the third person, I felt like I was reading William’s and Rush’s inner monologues. Their dialogue and interactions were spot on, and the back and forth between the two made me laugh out loud. The dirty talk was fun too.
I loved Avaritia and was entertained throughout. I know my review is not doing it justice, but it’s a story that needs to be read. It will make you laugh and tug at your heart. A great ball of energy that will make your witch’s senses tingle!
If you are a fan of Charmed, Practical Magic and/or the Double Alchemy series by Susan MacNichol... you will LOVE this book.
The Oswald family Witches are descendants of a long line of powerful witches dating back to the Salem Witch trials. The four of them are strong, fierce, loyal and squabble like cats and dogs most of the time. Renovation of the family home has fallen on the shoulders of William, the oldest, who is constantly undermined by his siblings Duncan and Jaime, the only girl in this quad. The strained bond between William and Duncan is only surmounted when William starts dating the owner of the company providing the renovations, Rush Harrington.
You see, hundreds of years ago during the trials, the three eldest Oswald brothers were hanged for being witches. William, Oliver and Duncan to which the youngest and only surviving brother, Jaime, fought back against the family that killed his brothers... the Harringtons. And as this story progress’s, you learn that the Oswald’s mother Mia gave them their names for good reason.
William recognizes a bond and an attraction to Rush that is only possible through a bond mates connection. And yet, he fights it every step of the way. Rush is used to being the one in charge, the man on top (pun intended) and getting exactly what he wants. What he wants now is William, their families generations old feud doesn’t apply to them as far as Rush is concerned. But Rush is a human and William fears what will happen if he falls in love, accepts the bond and has to share his family secret. More so, he fears losing Rush when he learns the truth most of all.
This was an action packed, nonstop thrill ride full of emotions, passion and drama. All the while William and Rush are trying to navigate the evergrowing bond between them, the Oswalds are fighting a very real threat that wants to eliminate them all. Now William faces the fear of Rush being in danger because of who William is, which only adds to the stress on their budding relationship. But the chemistry they share is impossible to ignore, especially when fate is involved.
Ortiz definitely put in his time researching the craft, the trials and the supernatural aspect of this story. It shows in the finished product and a depth to the story that otherwise wouldn’t have been there. The passion and electricity that is evident between William and Rush just from that first meeting was evident as well. I loved the constant threat of danger and the ever present electricity that flowed between characters.
While there were a few typographical errors, I recognized the intensity with which Ortiz writes all of his stories, so the flow and the intrigue never faded. And if you are a fan of Ortiz’s Renovations series, you get to visit with those guys at the end of this story when he ties in the families. This really is a must read, It was long and took me a few hours, but it seriously felt like minutes by the time I reached the end. I saw a LOT of Practical Magic type issues and situations, so again, if you are a fan you’ll seriously love this supernatural story.
This is an incredible story. I love a book that grabs you from the beginning. I also love when you aren't sure where the tale will take you. This book has those qualities, as well as being long enough to suck my in. All of the characters are fascinating, and Matt Ortiz has taken the time to explain the how and why to his witches. It is the beginning of a wonderful series that rivals The Black Dagger Brotherhood. It has the same feel as those books, and in my book, that's a hell of a ruler to be measured by. Three hundred years ago, three Oswald witches, William, Duncan, and Oliver, were put to death for being witches by the townsfolk while the youngest brother and the parents were out of town. As they were getting ready to be hanged, they spoke three curses to the towns people. One, by Duncan, cursed the love of his life to never find rest. William, the eldest, cursed the Harringtons and their descendants to a life of misery. Ollie cursed Maquintock Bay to fail and fall. William Oswald Blackthorne is the head of the house for Oswald manor. He moved back to help his family. He is the eldest of the 4 children, and very successful. His brothers, Duncan and Oliver, and his sister, Jamie, along with one aunt live in the estate. They are all witches, and their family has the strongest magic around. William is restoring the family home and has hired Harrington construction to do the work. Being an alpha male, William expects excellence. When he has to go talk to Rush Harrington after work comes to a halt, he is unprepared to find the love of his life. His bondmate is the opposite of him in many ways except the temper. They fight, but they desire each other just as fiercely. But the town still fears the Oswalds. History hasn't lessened the animosity, and it will take work to even get the families to support them. Being powerful witches, the family has many threats coming at them, even including the most powerful demon they have ever faced. It had killed William's parents, and his mother was the most powerful witch and the head of their magic. Can Rush except what William is? Can they find love with each other? How much danger will Rush be in if he accepts the bondmate? Will the demons kill him to get to William? The family faces many dangers as they come together. Can William and Rush find happiness? Is the Oswald magic strong enough to protect the family? There are so many twists and turns in this book you will be itching to get your hands on the next book to find out what happens next! This is going to be an epic series, so buckle up and hang on!
This is the first book I've read by this author, I want more!
I was totally hooked from the beginning when the hairs on my arms stood up and my emotions went into over drive!
What a wonderful storyline, full of Adventure, Romance Mystery and loads of Magic! I am certainly in love with the Oswald family as I am with this authors amazing imagination and writing skills!
I am praying there is a second book very soon as I'm not ready to say goodbye to these addictive characters!
Ok I liked this book a lot .. The Oswald witches are fascinating... I liked every character of this book .. I loved how it was more than just about William and Rush's love story.. It was about the history of the witches as well.. The only thing I am soooooo confused about is the epilogue .. It had nothing to do with the story I just read.. I don't know if this is tied to the witches or if it's the start of something new!! Confused as hell!! But either way in hooked!!! 4.5 stars
I'm a Matt Ortiz fan,and I'm unapologetic about it. This book was a bit of a departure from his previous series, BUT there were links to them. The story is captivating and thrilling. I hope this is the start of a new series, I truly want to learn more about the Oswald-Blackthorne family.
the first in what I hope is a continued series. Mathew has such has a great way of grabbing you and not letting go. in his own words "a good story never ends, it only gets richer as time goes by", and Mathews stories are the same.
I love supernatural books and this was no exception. I am hoping this will be a series with Duncan and Ollie next ( although the epilogue leads me to believe there are others first)
