Something CRAWLS through Shady Valley, and when it feasts, its hunger can never be satiated.
Life has struck Troy Skinner like a hammer. In the past week, he’s lost his job, his wife, and has been forced to move to the trailer park on the bad side of town. The residents are anything but a bunch of drunk hicks, half of whom he arrested during his time as a deputy.
And that isn’t even the worst of it. There are rumors of strange things lumbering in the woods that loom over everything like a shadow. Animals, and even people, have gone missing. As night descends, these mysterious, massive beasts hunt. And the trailer park is their territory.
Can Troy survive these ravenous creatures and his newfound life? Or will he become another victim, tangled in their terrifying web?
Samuel Small has been writing stories since he was five years old. His earliest book, titled Mario, was a thrilling tale in which the titular character had to jump up to get a key to open a door. His stories have gotten even more riveting over the years, now consisting of more than one sentence per page.
Crawl is a horror/survival thriller about spiders; spiders as big and bigger than dogs! The narrative takes off fast after the first short chapters that introduce Troy, A former law enforcement officer who loses his job as a direct result of his ex-wife's lies who uses the situation to try to get full custody of their daughter. After moving to the trailer park himself, Troy initially thinks he is better than the residents, but when a child is taken and a wave of spiders attack the park quickly prove their mettle with a daring rescue attempt. The new Sheriff blows off the story of the spiders, even after the sight of a dead one, but is forced to reevaluate that position when wave after wave of them lay siege to the suburbs, including the home of Troy's ex-wife. Many rise to the challenge, but not too many survive. I've omitted key events in this review so I'm not going to ruin the book if you read this review. Overall, the book is short, past paced and fun, as good as the giant spider genre gets, though its definitely a niche' genre. Recommended for fans of Eight Legged Freaks and similar books and movies. 4/5 stars!
Crawl by Samuel Small is a really fun spider horror tale.
The book is a pretty quick read that doesn't take itself too seriously. It is definitely not a comedy, but there are some funny moments that will make readers chuckle.
Crawl is a modern creature feature that will make you squirm if you are not a fan of Spiders. It harkens back to the sci-fi horror films of the 1950s.
There are some cringe inducing moments that have to do with some spider and human deaths. Creepy crawlies give me the Willies, which is why I like reading these types of stories, and Crawl doesn't disappoint.
The characters are relatable enough to make you either like or hate them in the context of the story.
Superior effort by Small, I look forward to what he has in store for us in his next book.
The book is rather short for my usual reads, but it doesn’t disappoint on organization and pace as it’s a very pleasant read, it’s fast and you don’t even realize when you are nearing the end of the story.
I also think it’s really well described as it does convey the feeling of horror, fear and not having anywhere to run. Still, since it does have an hopeful view considering all the people coming together and fighting, it’s an overall pleasant read and in these terms I would give it 4 stars and recommend for an easy and fast read over the weekend.
this story was great. had me at the edge of my seat constantly and wanting to kill spiders like crazy. I do not like spiders. I can deal with any other critter but spiders get to me and this was like a true nightmare come true. The ending was perfect because you always get tired of seeing the bad guy or the good guy. I guess I should say get knocked down and never win and in life he won.
A rough and tumble story about divorce, kids and spiders. An invasion of spiders to be exact. Relatable characters, a good fast paced story and plenty of action! Don't mind the creepy crawlies!
