There’s just something irresistible about detective witches. This one doubles down on everything that makes this series such a vibe. This second installment in the Bird Girl Witches series raises the stakes significantly, somehow; it's darker, more intense, and full of haunted corners.
The gothic atmosphere is dialed up in this one, with ghostly hauntings, a full-on séance, and deeply unsettling secrets buried beneath the surface. The spiritual and ghostly elements are threaded into the story nicely. I just love how the magical and mystery mingle here.
It’s moody in the best way and there’s an almost historical feel to it. I adore the familiars; they are such an important part of the story, and I’m always thrilled when they show up.
The deeper dive into the history kept me hooked. You can feel the tension building, and the series seems to be heading into even murkier, more dangerous territory. I am so here for it. I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Four witches will stand. Great evil will call. Dark merges with light to bury them all.
This book is so much more than an absolutely stunning cover. This is the second installment that is even more dark and hauntingly beautiful, with the spooky gothic atmosphere and dark magic, ghosts and spiritual planes, a magical séance or two, devastating buried family secrets, magical familiars, and witchy detectives using whatever resources they can to solve the mystery at hand.
This story follows Francesca, a physic teen who alongside her white raven familiar, Stella, is tasked with investigating the happenings of Talus Hall. In doing so, she discovers a murder at a nearby haunted manor where evil has a deep-roots. The more she investigates, the more sinister secrets become unearthed… and something even more ancient and dark is awakened that puts everyone in danger.
This series is some of my favorite YA gothic paranormal reads. L.A. has a wonderful writing style with twists and turns and is perfectly paced to ensure that you are fully emersed and captivated until the very last page. When things seem to get tense, Francesca finds companionship and solace in her ability to telepathically communicate with Stella. I just love their relationship. I will say that if you have not read the first book, you absolutely should. I am so looking forward to book 3!! Impatiently, patiently waiting as this book will live in my head rent free for the foreseeable future.
Call the Four. Turn back the past. Hold all in Sight.
"Four witches will stand. Great evil will call. Dark merges with light to bury them all." I loved this book. Francesca may be a young medium but she has other strong ladies around her to help when she is called to Talus Manor to help solve a murder and figure out why the ghosts are slamming doors, windows and "causin' such a frightful racket!" Francesca uses her powers and senses to figure out what is happening in the manor but when she gets her own familiar, a white raven named Stella, Francesca seems to find comfort with having a companion that she can telepathically talk to in times of need. * The story revels family secrets, dark magic, murder and brings in characters from Autumn Death which really made me excited for possibly more to come. I'm saying that because of how the book ended and the quote above.
I didn't read it as fast as normal but that was because I wanted to savor the story and magic.
I couldn’t wait to dive into this, after book one, and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Brown draws you into her world with vivid descriptions, and wraps you in this amazingly gothic setting, so get ready to feel a bit of a shock when you return to the real world! I’m just absolutely in love with teen medium and detective Francesca. She’s smart, determined, and doesn’t shy away even though she carries such a heavy responsibility. Francesca’s familiar made for a fun character, and the bond between them reminded me of one between the closest of friends or siblings. The story itself has excellent pacing, and makes it so hard to set down once you start reading. The twists kept me guessing and engaged til the very end. Cannot recommend this enough!
I loved this book just as much as Autumn Death! Everything about this from the Francesca’s abilities as a medium to the paranormal entities she awakens this story is filled with the best gothic vibes and creepiest haunted manor. Francesca really comes into her own with the help of those around her as she uncovers family secrets, dark magic, and the truths surrounding murder. I loved her familiar and how she telepathically communicates with her.
All around a fantastic follow up to Autumn Death and even those it’s an interconnected standalone I loved the call backs to book 1 and the anticipatory hints at what’s to come next.
4.5 ⭐️ review! This series keeps getting better and better! I love how the books follow the same characters but each book is from the different perspective of those characters. I adore Francesca! This is the second book and I definitely think you should read Autumn Death first. There is such cool and unique magic involved and dark magic as well. No spice but there’s sweet young love.
