✨ARC review✨
I feel pretty neutral about this — the characters were okay, there was little to no plot but the relationship was more or less interesting enough to hold up the story… I had a good enough time reading it but I’m not sure I’d recommend it because it didn’t have anything that really make it special.
Outplayed follows spoiled hockey player Jake and his reluctant tutor Eliana as they navigate the weights of familial pressures and expectations and come to trust each other to help carry some of their burdens. How I feel about the main characters is a huge factor in how I feel about a romance, and this one was 50/50. Eliana felt very dimensional and overall I really liked her. I appreciated that her character was more than an archetype, and I could see traces of her experiences in her personality (being a POC, being a child of immigrants, coming from a single-parent household, financial challenges, etc.). Jake on the other hand… I did not like as much. He felt like a meathead for the first 75% of the book and then because a sickeningly sweet cinnamon roll for the end. Even though we got glimpses of who he was outside of being an entitled jock, none of it felt real. He talked a lot about being the black sheep of his family, but he wasn’t (yes, he felt that way and his perception is his reality, but it was hard for me to sympathize with someone who was being showered with love and support from his parents and siblings at every turn).
This book didn’t really have a plot but was instead completely driven by the relationship. The sources of conflict in the relationship were valid, but it did feel like Eliana and Jake had the same conversations about these conflicts over and over again, so the book got a little repetitive at times. I’ll also add that this book is described as a fake dating romance, and although there is fake dating, I personally don’t think that’s an accurate description of this book.
If you’re looking for a fast, sweet, character-driven romance with at least one main character that doesn’t feel like the traditional romance main character, this might be a great read for you. Ultimately I was turned off by one of the main characters and found the story to be a bit forgettable, so it’s not a book I will widely recommend and I’m not sure it’s one I’d want to return to.
