THIS IS IT – THE PARTY ENDS HERE.Bruce Wayne, a young man who has built his entire life on leveling up, on becoming a bigger man than both his enemies and the obstacles that stand in his way, will have to break down the Black Mask and his gang of Party Animals. Will he be able to do this without the help of his unlikely new MI6 ally, Alfred Pennyworth? And how do his childhood friends – Edward Nygma, Waylon Jones, Harvey Dent, and Oswald Cobblepot (among others) – play a crucial role in Batman’s legacy as Gotham’s Vigilante? Absolute Batman’s first story arc, “The Zoo” concludes with this larger-than-life story, while introducing a few new elements to come in arc 2. You’d have to be ABSOLUTELY MAD to miss it!
Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
Scott if you’re reading this, Batman should pull out a gun and shoot out a little white flag that says “I don’t kill” and then he pulls out another gun that shoots out a little white flag that says “but I do permanently hospitalize those that oppose me” and then he pulls out another gun that shoots out a little white flag that says “BANG” and then Batman and the goon both start laughing and then Batman pulls out a real gun and actually shoots him.
I initially gave this issue 4 stars immediately after finishing my read-through last night. I then spent all day today mentally going back over snippets of the book and found I couldn't stop thinking about certain segments -- the splash page homage, Batman punting a problem child off a boat, the part with the bat-ears, pretty much everything involving Batman raiding Black Mask's yacht cum server farm, and just how absolutely batshit insane it all was, not to mention to sheer what the fuckery of that epilogue. There's just so many wonderful images carved into my memory by Nick Dragotta from Scott Snyder's script that I HAVE to give this closing chapter to the Absolute Batman's debut ARC the full five stars. The more on think on it, the more I love it.
Continuarei a leitura.
I must admit that the story fizzles out towards the end of the arc, and it didn't live up to the potential set by the earlier issues. But that doesn't mean I hated this issue. It has its moments, and some of those work quite well. I like Mayor Gordon and Martha Wayne's professional relationship and mutual respect for each other. I also loved how the story played out, showing parallels between young Bruce's fear of losing his mother versus the current-day events when Martha is in deep trouble because Gotham has fallen into deep chaos. I must admit, different iterations may come and go, but Gotham shall always remain a cesspool of corruption, evil, and utmost chaos.
I would have preferred that the ending had been even more gruesome—for some reason, it felt like an underwhelming conclusion to such an epic arc. But Batman's fight sequences were the highlight of this issue. He was extremely ruthless. Batman kicking an evil kid like a football shall forever remain etched in my memory.
Overall, I think this arc offered a decent beginning to a new Batman mythos. I'm invested enough to want to continue reading further.
There’s always a sequence of panels in this line that will get me cackling. In today’s episode: Batman drop kicking a child into space. Hardly exaggerating!
Again and again, the action never fails to thrill... what batman can do to a bad guy with a life jacket is hilarious and with a bowling ball is brutal and what happens next, I won't spoil is absolutely fiendish... batman is evening the odds against the nightmarish lunacy of the party animals with relentless vengence.
But it is again not all action here and amongst these actions peices are the flash backs to Bruce's quiet moments from just before the 'Zoo' incidnet that spark Batman’s inspiration and the kind words from his mother that motivates him to 'work everyday to stop those bad things from ever happening again.... That's how you win against nightmares'
Snyder progresses the back story here further than usual, whilst the present is kicking off slowly, but it's this pace that is needed and I'm enjoying it so much..
Dragotta's art is 5 star as usual.... there's a full-page piece that is probably the most brutal thing I've seen batman do to someone!!!
first 6 issues are pretty promising, has some very interesting ideas for a batman story. i really appreciate the way they try to put the core ideals and characteristics of the character of batman in a completely new light. while im not completely in love with this arc as a whole, it did a good job establishing the universe and gave me confidence it will only get better and more ambitious from here.
I would say I’m rating this issue 5 stars for Batman beating Black Mask with bowling ball hands, or using the cowl’s ear-knives to stab out Black Mask’s eyes, or for Martha being the essence of hope, but I’m not. I’m rating this 5 stars for Batman punting a child into the ocean.

Martha to Bruce- “you wear the pain like a damn cape. And you work every day to stop those bad things from happening again. That’s how you win against the nightmares. How you win against all of it. Always.”
one of the best issues so far, super good dialogue and juxtaposition between the scenes, I haven't been this excited since Scott Snyder original batman run.
