Edited by Norbert Kraft, MD, Mars One's Chief Medical Officer and head of crew selection and training, as well as crew selection and training committee members James R. Kass, PhD, and Raye Kass, PhD, this collection of essays from scientists, psychologists, and more provides a behind-the-scenes look at the process and criteria used to choose candidates, fascinating details about what they'll learn, and predictions about their future lives on Mars.

Inside, you'll find in-depth discussions

The essential skills and training the Mars One astronauts will need to journey to and then survive on Mars, from technical and medical know-how to the interpersonal skills necessary for working in confined quarters so far from home
The challenges of going through the selection and training process while being watched by millions around the world, and what Mars One hopes watching the process will mean for viewers at home
Inside information, including images, on the planned Mars One habitats and colonization timeline

This is a really fascinating book. The Mars One concept is thrilling and bonkers in equal measure, and, if it does go ahead, will be one of the biggest events of our lifetime. (If you don’t already know Mars One intends to send people to Mars to colonize the planet, without any belief that they will ever come back home to Mother Earth).
In this book some of the people behind the plan explain what skills, personalities and attitudes the pioneers will need to possess. They look at practical matters such as the technology required, what conditions will be like and the legal and ethical aspects of the mission. The main spotlight is on the astronauts themselves - how will issues such as gender, culture, personality, age, psychology and communication impact on the teams?
An interesting aspect is that the whole process will be filmed and aired globally. The first shows will be the selection process. We will see those who have been selected for further testing being put into teams and pushed to their limits as the first crew of four is decided. How will they cope with being filmed? Will this affect their behaviour? Is it right that something as important as this (the first people to live and die in outer space, to colonize a new planet!) be decided by a reality show? The authors are keen to lay out their reasoning and it is thought-provoking to read. They argue that private enterprise will be the way that our exploits in Space are funded.
The book also includes extracts from submissions to the Mars One project answering the question, who on earth would volunteer for a one way trip to another planet, with no hope of ever seeing their loved ones ever again?!
Thank you to BenBella Books for the ARC in return for an honest review.

I have completely missed the hype that must have superseded this book, but I am just as curious about who will be chosen, and why, for the first attempt at human habitation of Mars. This book is composed of a several essays related to the skills, personality traits and physical make-up of our first Martians.

Of note is the importance placed on the emotional intelligence, gender and creativity of the crew, instead of an emphasis on physical prowess. The essays are well connected and not too repetitive, which can occur at times in collections such as this. I didn't personally find the quotes and chapter written by the Mars Ones applicants particularly interesting as they were either not very well written, or so blindly cheery as to be of little value. Of course if you are applying for a one way trip to Mars your ego is probably a bit off-center; you believe you are going to be the shining light of the universe, an ambassador for all of mankind. This is an interesting, and earth changing program that is to be sure, but the Martians themselves are just people - a fact that is well presented throughout the chapters.

I particularly liked the section on interplanetary and space law and policy - now that was fascinating and I would definitely read a book about that subject.

I was a Goodreads First-reads winner!

I received this advanced copy through NetGalley for an honest review. (Librarian MS.P)

"Mars One" takes a very human approach to the incredible science behind the almost Sci-Fi mission to colonize Mars.

This was a much cooler book than I was expecting. From the description it seemed too analytical of just about everything about the Mars One Project. But the book is broken down into a easy to read, but still informative selection of information on what the astronauts to Mars will endure before and after the trip.

One of my favorite features are the excerpts from official Mars One documents.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in futurism and or astronomy.

A remarkably interesting introduction to what it would really mean to live on Mars. This book doesn't pretend everything is perfect in the eyes of Mars One (the introduction is written by a man who admits that he doesn't believe the timeframe or cost estimate are realistic) but it does a great job of showing the hope and sense of exploration and curiosity that those involved in Mars One have, and it's exciting. The book covers health issues, technology issues, interpersonal issues, and discusses the proposed schedule of Mars One and includes quotes from the current list of candidates. It's scientific, if optimistic, and I would recommend to fans of The Martian.

I've always been pretty excited about space and space travel, but having the Mars One Project outline all of the plans and goals for a permanent settlement on Mars was a fascinating read. Not only does it get into the technical aspects of space travel and Mars habitation, but the essays concerning interpersonal relationships, equality, and creativity were exceptional. Would I go to Mars? I think I might.

This book provides a collection of very good essays on the traits, skills, and resources crew members will need to succeed as part of the planned Mars One colonization mission to Mars. The personal perspectives and quotes from applicants further enrich the back story.
