It was worth the wait.
Last volume ended with Marin’s popularity exploding and Gojo’s head exploding as he was consumed with jealousy. Now, as things are rough between them, here comes the girl who messed Gojo’s confidence up as a kid, ready to admit she didn’t mean what she said and it’s obvious rivalry time. Plus, Marin finds out that she may be ruining Gojo’s own aspirations.
Most of what I wrote is true, but what isn’t true is what makes this a cracking good volume. Specifically, I had been dreading that girl from the start coming back because I just knew if she did that she’d after Gojo. It was so obvious.
Instead, we get to see just why Gojo latched on to hina dolls and how Non tried to help him while he was still consumed with grief over his parents’ passing. Her efforts got brushed aside when Gojo left and she lashed out, accidentally screwing him up.
And now that the family has returned… she apologizes for how she was. It’s really rather nice and hearfelt, plus she assumes Gojo and Marin are dating already anyways and isn’t that type of person. I love this choice a whole lot; there’s enough going on here.
The real story comes when Gojo and Marin are sorting out the very, very awkward moment between them at Comiket. To say there was a communication breakdown is an understatement and because they keep not talking about it, well, it gets worse.
Finally, Gojo goes to have a face to face and when he starts admitting his jealousy over Marin doing what she loves he gets a sudden realization that he has become what he hated, but cannot help what’s coming out of his mouth.
While this looks to be the end for our very dynamic duo, there remains but one inescapable truth: Gojo is not Marin, and Marin is not Gojo. And while this may all come together quickly, I think it’s absolutely believable because of who these two are and what they’ve been through.
The way this plays out is very unconventional, but all the more delightful for it. In confronting his feelings and being open about them, Gojo shows just how much Marin has helped him change.
And, you know, Marin has wanted to hear this for ages anyway and Gojo’s reaction was also predicated on an assumption he is erroneously making. Let’s just say that it works out.
Oh, hell, it’s wildly entertaining. The aftermath of this is hysterical and fits Marin’s personality to a tee. The way she sits after all this shakes out is so ridiculous, but very believable for her. Marin was already plenty affectionate, but seeing her unleashed is kind of amazing.
As the last stop on an emotional journey, it is an incredibly satisfying bit of business. This has been up and down on occasion, but the overall quality has been super strong and this pays it all off wonderfully. Hopefully the final volume will be just as good, but this one got it right.
5 stars - a really great payoff that rewards the reader for having enjoyed it all to this point. Looking forward to the conclusion next time, but this just nailed it.
