Jeremiah A. Gilbert’s vivid and exhilarating compendium of images, “Around the World in Eighty Photos,” exposes spectacular and memorable hidden treasures that, he claims, await those who dare to look beyond the surface. These images are from his 20 years of travel, during which he visited all seven continents and more than 100 countries.
Gilbert immerses the reader in locales that are difficult to learn about from any other source. These include the Sans-Souci Palace in Haiti, Patagonia, which is known as the “gateway to Antarctica,” Lomé in Togo where he captures school children in a rural school, and Ecuador’s Otavalo Market, where he displays the traditional attire of its indigenous inhabitants. He has photographed distinctive landscapes, renowned places with cultural significance, and popular markets and buildings all while explaining what drew him to them.
While Gilbert meticulously describes his cameras, lenses, and the brief history of each photograph, he also demonstrates how capturing each one of them required him to be creative to achieve the best angles and depth. For example, when shooting the modern architectural design of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, California, it was critical to carefully study the lighting conditions to minimize glare while maintaining depth. On another page, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico required him to make two journeys, the first to assess the contrast lighting and the second to take the photograph.

Jeremiah A. Gilbert’s Around the World in Eighty Photos is more than just a photography book; it’s a visual adventure that takes you across the globe through the lens of an experienced traveler. Instead of sticking to well-known landmarks, Gilbert hones in on the often-overlooked corners of the world, giving them the spotlight they deserve. Each photograph is accompanied by a story—sometimes historical, sometimes personal, always engaging. He also shares the technical details behind each shot, making it both an inspiring and educational experience for photographers and travel enthusiasts alike.
As a photographer, I appreciate that Gilbert doesn’t just show beautiful places—he invites us into his thought process. His image of Rano Raraku on Easter Island struck me the most. He describes setting up his shot without people, then serendipitously capturing two figures stepping into the frame, perfectly enhancing the composition. That’s what photography is about—being prepared, yet open to unexpected moments. The book is filled with these little surprises, making it feel like you’re traveling right along with him.

This book is amazing! The photography is stunning!!
The colours are fabulous. The details in the black and white photographs are intricate and revealing. The chapter on cameras and lenses is fascinating. At the end of the book there’s a comprehensive glossary of terms. The author has included the technical details of each photograph, which camera he used and the settings. He gives us an insight into his thought process behind each photograph, what caught his attention, how the photograph was framed and any technical challenges. I love history and geography and with the photographs there’s snippets of both throughout the book giving great information and adding context to the visual journey. I started reading from the beginning, even a few of the photographic ‘chapters’. But then I read the book backwards in order to view the photograph first, followed by the description. Then I looked at the photograph for a second time with the added information. In doing so I travelled from East to West (the opposite direction from how the author intended). But this isn’t a book to just read once. I know I will return to it…the photographs are too stunning not to! I am especially looking forward to sharing it with my photographer granddaughter. Thank you Jeremiah for a very exciting book!

Around the World in Eighty Photos by Jeremiah A. Gilbert is an amazing photography book. Not only does the author give the reader brief information about the country and place where he took the photograph, he also provides the exact location in degrees. Then Gilbert explains his camera settings and the composition of the photograph.
Excellent. Sharp. Detailed photographs. Of places I’ve never been to. Some places I have never heard of.
Gilbert sums up this photography book best. “If you wander just a few blocks from the main tourist areas, you tend to find more authentic and quiet locations.” (Kindle Locations 780-781) Which he proves over and over again throughout Around the World in Eighty Photos.
A truly breathtaking book. Gilbert has an excellent eye for composition. I will be reading and looking at this book again and again to learn more about these varied countries. The author offers a Glossary of camera terms at the end. Thank you, Jeremiah!

The perfect book for travelers. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because it filled my mind with images of breathtaking and inspiring new adventures to take with my husband. The detailed descriptions made the world come alive. And if my husband doesn’t want to go, some photos have me so intrigued that I may have to go alone. Jeremiah Gilbert, your photography is stunning!

Jeremiah gives - literally - a snapshot of many of the places he has visited around the world. Nice descriptions of the area he's photographing, along with the camera settings. Whether you're a photographer, a traveler, or you just enjoy looking at beautiful pictures, this is the book for you.
