Sixteen years ago, I took a vow that changed everything.
I was not created to follow my own path. I was bred, born, raised, and trained to be a guardian knight. This is a great honor and a privilege. On the one night when I let myself forget my purpose, it resulted in death, the death of my heirs. Guardian knights have one solemn purpose–to protect the Royal Heirs of Terra. One moment of selfish freedom was all it took to kill my best friend, his wife, and scar Emma forever. I know that if I had been there—if I had been in that back seat with Emma, I could have saved them all. I vowed from that moment on that I would never let the ways of this strange realm corrupt my soul again.
I am Rykerian Dallard, and I hail from the famed Dallard line of Torren knights. I will stop at nothing until I find those who murdered Emma's family.
If you have read The Heir by Kayla Eshbaugh you will want to pick up The Knight. This a great addition to the series. We follow Ryker & I'm going to be honest I didn't like him in book one but now.... Really enjoyed seeing his point of view & that ending!! Looking forward to Shattered Heir later this year. 🗡🗡🗡🗡 If you are looking for a clean romance with some magic this series could be for you.
Excuse me while I go and SOB. I honestly didn't know what I was expecting when I started reading this novella, but I didn't plan on my heart just BREAKING for poor Ryker! His backstory way so beautiful and saddddd (😭), y'all!! It really explained a lot of his actions/feelings in The Heir. I loved getting inside of his head, especially since he explained a lot of different things about Terra (his home planet).
As always with novellas, I never want to spoil anything...so let me just say that if you were #TeamRyker after reading The Heir you NEED to read this book. Seriously. I'm #TeamRyker even more now. 😍😭
Read the book, y'all. Read The Heir first (if you haven't already), and then binge the HECK out of this one.
As far as content goes: No language (that I can remember anyway, lol)! Emma and Ryker do share some intimate moments, but they weren't as passionate as her moments with Shad...so I wouldn't deem them as inappropriate. Ryker makes an observation that "Earthlings" might drink and do drugs to numb themselves from pain. Grief, anxiety, depression, and anger are some of the major feelings that are experienced and talked about. I personally wasn't triggered by any of this, but other readers might be...so please take that into consideration. There was a darker side to the souls/melodies concept, but nothing too dark.
Can we talk about that ending? THAT. ENDING. It snuck up on me so darn fast and just left me wanting even more (which is why I've already started reading Shattered Heir, lol). This novella reallyyyy is a great addition for the series, y'all. And Ryker reallyyyy has my heart...sorry Shad. 😬🙈
A novella in Ryker’s perspective was something that I was so excited for ! After reading The Heir, I definitely wanted to learn more about him. Honestly, I wanted to know more about so many characters, but Ryker was at the top of the list! There was so much I did not know or understand yet. This novella answered some questions, revealed some secrets, and left me eagerly waiting for the next book! Full disclosure, I sometimes wanted to shake Ryker! He was very focused on his responsibility to Emma and his feelings both towards her and surrounding her parents’ death that he could not see so much that was going around him. Ryker was full of emotions and he was not allowing those around him to help him or support him through it. I loved getting to see some of his history and it definitely made my heart hurt for him. There was quite a bit of tragedy for him and it really shaped his priorities. Ryker was absolutely devoted to Emma and it impacted so many of his decisions. This novella was so engrossing and I loved getting to know more of the characters. Ryker’s perspective gave a lot of information on the world, as well as teasing with hints of more of the story! It made me so excited for the next book! This is a clean YA romantasy novella with only kissing and some fantasy violence. I received an ARC.
– this is book 1.5 of a series & should be read after The Heir (book 1)
*it takes place before & during the events of The Heir
– this is told from Ryker’s point of view
-it is mentioned that some characters’ family/friends passed (in a car crash in one case)
-it is mentioned that some characters age differently than people from Earth & that because of this some of these characters had drastic age differences in their romantic relationships
-it is mentioned that a character is tortured (light on details but it is mentioned that: they are cut with a knife, they are beat up a bit, & that they bleed from their wounds)
Review:
I love that we got to see what was going on inside Ryker’s head during the events of The Heir! I learned some new things about Terrans on Earth and how some things worked when it came to them that I didn’t know about previously. I loved seeing Ryker & Emma’s friendship and some of the past events that brought them closer together over the years. I’m also very curious how Ryker’s motivations and feelings will either grow or change over the course of this series since the covers seem to indicate Emma will go for the other guy over him in terms of a romantic relationship.
Summary:
Ryker is a guardian knight, born and raised to care for the royal heirs of Terra. It is his sworn duty and sole purpose. Which he is reminded of when he makes the mistake of pushing aside his duty for his own desires, resulting in the death of his heirs and best friends. Now all that is left is Emma, their daughter and their sole heir. Ryker will do everything in his power to protect her and find those responsible for her parent’s death. He can’t allow himself to fail again.
I loved this book! I loved the characters and the plot! I had a hard time putting this wonderful book down! I will be reading the next book in this wonderful series!
