Really enjoyed this! Possibly one of my favorites in the series. I love when a mystery series has overarching storylines. I love Atalanta’s storyline about her relationship with her grandfather and Renard and learning more about her inheritance and new role as a detective. I also love Raoul’s storyline about his race car driving and how his vulnerabilities have led him into a very dicey situation with the Dulces. I’m very curious to see how that will play out. The whole memory loss thing is also very intriguing since it has connected Atalanta and Raoul on a different level. Will Renard be right in his suspicions about Raoul not being a good fit for Atalanta? Will Raoul act on Clarence’s letter in some way?
If you're a fan of virtual travel, this series should be a hit with you. It's taken me to some of the most incredible places, albeit there always seems to be a murder involved to distract my attention. Seriously, the author does an excellent job of setting the scene and sharing what we'd be seeing, not to mention usually eating and even sensing the aromas of, were we there. Although this one didn't quite pull me in as the previous books have, it was still an enjoyable read. Atalanta Ashford inherited both her late grandfather's fortune and investigative service, something she's shown great talent in tackling. True, her tactics aren't always what might be expected and she does tend to let her emotions lead her, well, astray isn't the right word, so lets just say along difficult, even dangerous paths that might best have been avoided. In this case, her romantic yearning for champion race car driver Raoul Lamont, takes her to an isolated grand hotel in the Alps where he's recuperating from a bad accident. Not only that, but when she arrives she finds he's suffering from memory loss and doesn't even recognize her. Given the female attention he's garnered, maybe he isn't really suffering but he's chaffing under the restrictions placed on him by the hotel's owner who just happens to be Raoul's new race team owner. Why is he so determined to keep Raoul isolated?
And, that's about all the plot I'm going to share. Atalanta was frantic to reach his side given their "almost" relationship and at first is determined to focus on simply helping him recover. Then there's a murder. It does say a great deal for Atalanta's kindness and personality that even though Raoul doesn't recognize her and the "almost" moments they're shared, he's drawn to trust and like her. In her case, her mind is whirling even more than usual, which is a great deal, as she's determined to add finding out whodunit as well as protect Raoul. Fortunately, she does have help in Renard, the butler she seems to have inherited from her grandfather, too.
Bottom line, this was an interesting read that kept my attention. Let's just say, lots of intrigue, international at that, the usual romantic angst and always hopeful back and forth between Raoul and Atalanta, setting and staying focused on priorities, and, hey, is the mob involved? Simply staying alive is a priority, too, with her laser focus on Raoul's health and future. If you're a series fan, you know there's always a letter to anticipate but I won't explain that further as it's fun to discover how relevant words written in the past by a man who barely knew his granddaughter are under present circumstances. Thanks #HarperCollinsUK - #OneMoreChapter for introducing me to Atalanta (her names means "huntress") Ashford and giving me this early peek at how her life and wannabe romance is going with Raoul.
It was an absolute joy to be back in Atalanta Ashford’s company in Trouble in the Alps, the sixth instalment in Vivian Conroy’s Miss Ashford Investigates series.
This is one of those series that feels like a treat every time a new book lands, and while long-time fans will get the most out of the continuing story threads, this is also a very easy point to jump in if you’re new.
If Golden Age–inspired mysteries with a generous helping of armchair travel are your thing, this whole series deserves a place on your TBR.
Atalanta, once from fairly modest beginnings, is now an heiress, having inherited not only her grandfather’s fortune but also his sleuthing business.
In Trouble in the Alps, she finds herself in the Swiss Alps, driven by worry and determination as she searches for Raoul – her long-running love interest – after his serious accident.
This story picks up the threads left dangling at the end of Death on the Rhine, with Atalanta convinced she has finally tracked Raoul down to a remote Alpine hotel, accessible only by funicular.
The hotel is run by the nephew of the owner of Raoul’s new racing team, a man who seems very keen to keep Raoul isolated, heavily medicated and firmly out of reach.
To gain gain access, Atalanta bends the truth about their relationship and checks in under an assumed name.
When she finally comes face to face with Raoul, there’s another complication: he doesn’t recognise her at all, thanks to memory loss following the accident. Even so, he clearly responds to her presence, and she’s allowed to spend time with him – much to the discomfort of those who would prefer her gone.
Naturally, this being an Atalanta Ashford mystery, things don’t stay quiet for long.
When a guest is found murdered, Atalanta can’t help but start asking questions, even when it puts her directly in harm’s way.
A second body, discovered in the hotel’s grotto, confirms that something far more sinister is unfolding among the snow-covered peaks.
As secrets begin to surface and connections emerge, Atalanta must draw on all her intelligence and courage to uncover the truth and confront a killer who is closer than expected.
The mysteries layered neatly on top of one another, kept me guessing throughout. The snowy mountain setting was a real highlight too – beautifully evoked and perfect for a locked-in, cosy-yet-dangerous whodunnit.
Trouble in the Alps is a fun, well-rounded murder mystery that I’d happily recommend to fans of cosy crime and classic-style detective fiction. And with the promise of Italy next, I’m already counting down the days until Atalanta’s next adventure. Amalfi Coast, here we come.

Trouble in the Alps by Vivian Conroy finds Atalanta and her reliable butler, Renard, searching for Raoul. The newspapers said there had been an accident but it was sketchy on what kind of accident and where he was. She was worried as he was working for the well-known criminals, the Dulces. She had finally wound up at a resort in the Alps where she found him. He was not well, and he had no memories. Luckily, the manager of the hotel, and nephew of the mob boss, Maurizio Dulce allowed her to see him, and although he did not remember her, it was obvious that she was good for him, so Maurizio allowed Atalanta to spend time with him. As always, she finds a murder wherever she goes and here there were two. One was a guest, Eva, a woman she didn’t really care for but had spent time with. She took pity on a bartender, Franco, who stood accused of the murder. She believed him to be innocent.
Atalanta was against the wall with Raoul. She was worried about his health and about what his violent employer would do if the renowned race care driver was not able to drive for him. Renard was living in the servants’ quarters and so heard plenty of gossip that Atalanta was not privy to. This was a very convoluted case with plenty of twists and turns and surprising outcomes. She is a clever investigator, even without Raoul’s help and eventually everything is brought right, this time. Many are still worried about the Dulce family, and rightly so. I expect we are not done with them. This is a clever series filled with interesting and well-written characters. She never fails to amaze.
I was invited to read Trouble in the Alps by Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #HarperCollinsUKOneMoreChapter
Trouble in the Alps is the sixth book in the Miss Ashford Investigates series, and it was an absolute joy to be back in Atalanta’s company. If you haven’t read the previous books, I’m sure you’ll be fine jumping in here. If you like your Golden Age mysteries with a spot of travel, though, you should definitely add this entire series to your TBR.
Atalanta, who came from rather modest means, has become an heiress, not only inheriting her grandfather’s fortunes but also his sleuthing business. Trouble in the Alps finds her in the Swiss Alps, desperately trying to find Raoul, who has been her love interest for a few books now and who had a serious accident. Naturally, she doesn’t just find Raoul, she finds quite a bit of trouble too.
I always look forward to the next Atalanta Ashford mystery because I know I always have such a good time with it, and I do love me some bookish travel, and Trouble in the Alps certainly lived up to my expectations. The mysteries kept multiplying and they all kept me guessing (although one of my more outlandish theories was proven right in the end) and I loved the snowy mountain setting.
Trouble in the Alps is a fun, well-rounded murder mystery and I would happily recommend it to fans of cosy murder mysteries. I’m already looking forward to next year, when I’ll be joining Atalanta in Italy! Amalfi coast, here we come!
Trouble in the Alps is out in digital formats and audio on 30 November, and paperback on 4 December.
Massive thanks to One More Chapter and Netgalley for the DRC. All opinions are my own.
Trouble in the Alps by Vivian Conroy is the sixth in the beguiling Miss Ashford Investigates series, excellent for Golden Age readers.
Atalanta's late grandfather had left her his fortune and sleuthing business...what a wonderful combination and setup for a book series! She usually enjoys travel adventures but this one hits close to home. Her beloved friend, Raoul Lemont, has been hurt in an accident in Europe and until she locates him, she does not know the extent of his injuries. Along with her servant Renard she returns to Switzerland and finds Raoul at Hotel Alpenrot in the Alps, fawned over by doting ladies. More disconcerting is that he is suffering from amnesia and doesn't recall his friend but he grows to marvel at her.
Not only are there Mafia connections, theft and a disappearance but also murder. Atalanta uses her wit and insightful intelligence to get to the bottom of the linked mysteries.
I really like Atalanta and appreciate her humble beginnings which stay with her. Renard is loyal and endearing. In addition to interesting characters, the writing is gorgeous and infectious. The settings of these novels are always atmospheric and compelling. Switzerland is indeed a dramatically stunning country and I was transported back in an instant. The ending is satisfying as well. I look forward to Atalanta's next journey!
Race drive Raoul Lamont sends for Atlanta Ashford after he has an accident, and she's staying in an isolated grand hotel in the Alps. Raoul is recovering from the accident. He is also recovering from memory loss and he doesn't seem to recognise Atlanta. While Atlanta is staying at the hotel, a guest is murdered and Atlanta starts investigating.
This book has been descriptively written, describing the scenery and the food Atlanta eats. The pace is steady and the characters are well-developed. I was never quite sure if Raoul was faking having memory loss. This is a really good, cosy murder mystery series. This book can be read as a standalone.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #VivianConroy for my ARC of #TRoubleInTheAlps in exchange for an honest review.
This book follows the events that ended the book Death on the Rhine. Atalanta has hopes she has tracked Raoul down to a hotel in the Alps only accessible by use of a funicular. The snag is that the hotel is run by the nephew of the owner of Raoul's new racing team and seems to want to keep him isolated and incapacitated. Lying slightly about their relationship and using an assumed name, she gains access to Raoul and he doesn't recognise her as he is suffering from memory loss. That said he does brighten up in her company so she is allowed to spend time with him. When a guest is found murdered, Atalanta feels compelled to find out what happened, even putting herself at risk. When another body is found in the hotel's grotto, things start to add up and she must use all of her skills to confront the killer and bring them to justice.
This is the sixth book in the Miss Ashford Investigates series and each one is an enjoyable romp. I love the dynamic between Atalanta and Raoul and Trouble in the Alps follows on nicely from the previous book. Atalanta rushes to a hotel in the Alps when she hears that Raoul has had an accident only to discover that he has amnesia. Throw in a murdered guest and Atalanta is in her element. Vivian Conroy writes these books so well. Her characters come alive on the page and there is just the right amount of mystery and intrigue to keep the reader guessing until the end. The humour is excellent and the protagonists are a perfect foil for each other. I really enjoy travelling to different places with Atalanta and the beautiful Alpine setting in this book had me dreaming of a winter holiday.
When Miss Atalanta Ashford learns that her dear friend Raoul Lemont has had a serious accident, she rushes to his remote hotel in the Alps only to discover he has no memory of her – or his life before. Atalanta is determined to stay undercover while she helps Raoul recover. But when another resident is found dead, she is pulled into the hotel’s dark secrets. The sixth outing for Atalanta & another delight. I loved the descriptions of the locations, you feel as though you are actually there, as well as the actual mystery. I really like Atalanta & how she cares for Raoul even though he doesn’t remember her. There are twists, turns & red herrings, as well as strong characters, a well paced story & of course the wonderful location. I look forward to where Atalanta will go next I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
When Atalanta Ashford arrives at her friend Raoul's hotel in the mountains after receiving the news that he has had an accident, the last thing she expects is to discover that he has amnesia!
But things are about to get even more complicated. Because while Miss Ashford is sojourning there, another guest at the hotel unexpectedly ends up being murdered. So, it's just as well that the investigative skills of the hotel's unexpected new guest are as well honed as her sharp mind...
This is an enjoyable mystery, delivered with Intelligence and humour. It gets 3.5 stars.

After a devastating accident leaves her friend Raoul with amnesia, Atalanta rushes to his remote Alpine hotel. When a guest is murdered, Atalanta uncovers dark secrets. Can she help Raoul recover his memory and expose the killer before they both become victims?
This book is full of intrigue, even though the murder takes place further into the novel than I expected. The book can be read as a standalone but it might be more enjoyable to read the series in order. I enjoyed the characters, and the mystery kept me guessing.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I really enjoy this series, Miss Ashford is back in the Alps this time. She’s come on the hunt to find Raoul as he’s had an accident. He’s a race driver and meets up with Miss Ashford every place she goes. When she finds him in a lavish hotel, he has no memory. A body then turns up and the detective in her begins. It’s a great story, the author is great at describing the places she writes about and you feel like you’re there. Another brilliant book in this series. A 4 star read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a cope.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley.
This novel is the sixth book in the Miss Ashford Investigates series. Although I didn't read the previous ones, it didn't feel like I was loosing too much of the main character's story. This book reads fine as a standalone.
However, this one took me a while to get into and I think it just didn't work out for me. It's very slow paced, it takes ages for something to happen, which is a deal breaker for me. I found myself loosing interest around 45-50% of the book.
A nice cosy mystery set in a Swiss alpine hotel. Atalanta Ashton has been searching for her friend Raoul Lamont, racing driver, who rumour has it, has suffered an accident. Along with her butler they track him down to the hotel, owned by his employer, an Italian with a decidedly shady background, Atalanta arrives under an assumed name to find Raoul suffering from memory loss, due to a skiing accident. Atalanta soon finds herself embroiled in murder and intrigue. A good read and my thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc.
This is book 6 in the Miss Ashford Investigates series, and as book 5 (Death on the Rhine) ended in a cliffhanger about her personal life, I was particularly looking forward to finding out what would happen in this one. I'm now pleased to report I greatly enjoyed following Miss Ashford to Switzerland, in a hotel where she found the man she loves and was very worried about, but of course also a new murder case to solve. As the mystery plot is independant of the previous books, you could read this one by itself, but I would still recommend to start with book 1 if you can.
Trouble in the Alps is the sixth book in the Miss Ashford investigates series. I haven’t read the previous novels, but had no issues reading this as a standalone. However, this book just wasn’t for me. I know others have loved it, but it just didn’t grab me and I felt the pace was too slow so I would rate this 2.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and the author for the chance to review.
Part of the reason that I love this series, is that they are set at a slower pace which befits the time when they are set in. Atalanta is searching for Raoul in this one as he has gone missing but as becomes her, finds herself caught up in a murder at a remote hotel in Switzerland. The story is beautifully described and slowly draws the reader in.
Thanks to Netgalley /OneMoreChapter for the ARC to review
I love this complex-plot mystery series! In this book, Atalanta does everything she can to help Raoul regain his memory after a devastating skiing accident. Was it truly an accident, or was his mobster boss behind the incident? Then, when Eva is found dead in the library, everyone at the hotel becomes a suspect. This was a wonderful, puzzling read with a great twist at the end!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I love these books! Perfect if you are a fan of golden age crime stories! This latest installment had me up late, snuggled with a cup of tea, wanting to read just "A few more pages" lol. It's a perfect setting for the latest book, and I love how we get to travel around in the Miss Ashford series!
Love this series! Adventure, mystery, romance, these books have it all. This latest Trouble In The Alps, does not disappoint. I like how Atalanta receives a letter from her grandfather via Reynard, in each investigative adventure. Can’t wait till the next book is released.
