The Courbet Connection

Rate this book
Forged masterpieces. Kidnapped students. The dark net.

Nonverbal communications expert Doctor Genevieve Lenard's search for an international assassin is rudely interrupted by an autistic teenager who claims that forged masterpieces are being sold on the dark net--a secret internet few know exists. The resulting probe uncovers an underground marketplace offering much more sinister products and services. Including murder.

An official investigation into one of her team members and the discovery of dozens of missing students across Europe adds immense pressure on Genevieve to find out if one person is masterminding these seemingly unrelated cases. What starts out as a search for illegal art sales soon turns into a desperate hunt for clues to uncover the conspiracy to destroy her team member and murder more students. Timing becomes even more crucial when someone close to her disappears and the assassin she's been looking for is the key to preventing another senseless death.

I was reading a review of another series and it mentioned returning to a good series is like returning home. And that's how this series feels for me. I am so invested in all these characters. The addition of a teenager on the autism spectrum worked very well.

In The Courbet Connection, author Estelle Ryan delivers another top performance by Dr. Genevieve Lenard, an expert in nonverbal communications. A high-functioning autistic, Genevieve “crawls into the safety of Mozart,” writing concertos in her head to ease her back from the dark chaos of autism. And in this adventure, she has plenty of reasons to turn to Mozart: a trail of forged masterpieces leads her to an underground marketplace, a secret Internet, kidnapped students, and murder. On top of that, an enemy from the past is after her and her oddball team of investigators: former thief and current lover Colin, fashionable hacker Francine; Interpol agent Manny; and criminal with a heart Vinnie.

For five books, Ryan has been building this team, adding glue and conflict with each addition to the series. It is fascinating to watch and gives this book such a strong foundation. But in book five, Ryan tosses in a new and interesting element: Caelan, a 17-year-old autistic boy genius living on his own with information about the forgeries. Caelan wants to belong, specifically to Genevieve’s team. Some of the best scenes are between Genevieve and Caelan as she teaches him how to control the darkness of his autism and even begin to socialize. Whereas Genevieve writes music in her head to calm herself, she helps Caelan use the geographical facts he is always spouting to control his meltdowns.

The pace in this book is relentless as the team races to save the kidnapped students, one of which is a friend. And once again, the reader learns more about the workings of the human mind through nonverbal communication and about art. I heartily recommend this book to mystery lovers, art lovers, and anyone who loves to see a team lovingly and expertly tugging and pulling each other to a solution. And don’t forget the extras: go to www.estelleryan.com where you will find additional information about the art and music featured in each book of this terrific series. Félicitations, Estelle Ryan.

Just wow!

Easily the best volume in the series. Very intense, not gonna lie. The topic of this one was really tough to stomach, but oh boy was it well written. The team around Dr. Lenard was stretched in every directions throughout the development, couple of new actors came in. All in all very strong characters development and I loved every bit of it :-)

3.5/5 - a fast read, i wanted to know if the motley crew and doctor Lenard would at last corner the psycho who wants them dead -
i may now go on reading the other books in the series at a quieter pace - an excellent thriller, one again -

This is another great Genevieve Lenard book. And, if you happen to notice a character with my name, it isn't a coincidence; I was lucky enough to have Ms. Ryan select me to be a victim!

When I read this series, I'm constantly impressed with the realistic way in which the characters are portrayed. I love to see how Genevieve's ability to cope with strenuous situations grows, and this book is no exception. Caelan, a new character introduced in this book, takes Genevieve to (uncomfortable) places she's never been before, and really makes her stretch.

I can't wait to continue reading more from this series!

One of my favorite relaxing reads. Take it to the beach, take it on the plane, take it to bed after a long day of work... you won't be disappointed. All the characters are charming and well developed. This one in particular had great suspense.

I have enjoyed each book in the Genevieve Lenard series in its own way. This one wasn't anything particularly different or special but it wasn't unenjoyable.

The characters, tone, and interesting mysteries all were consistent - I just had some problems with the pacing. It seemed like too many elements were in play, which caused all of them to seem rushed and underdeveloped. I wished we could have spent more time in close with the characters, as that is always my favorite part of these books.

It was still worth reading, and I will probably continue slowly making my way through this series.

i’m finding a pattern in this series: 3 books to get kubanov, 3 books to get dukwicz. i wonder if it will take two more books to get gasquet.

i liked this book better than the previous one as there was no politics involved in the case. i’m excited for additions to the team: caelan and judith.

in this book i was getting annoyed with nikki. she pushed when it wasn’t necessary.

This is another great book from Estelle Ryan. I have nothing new to add that hasn't already been said. I just wanted to mention that subject of this book is a little darker than the others; however, she handles it great, the characters are well defined and the writing is terrific. I feel like I'm part of the team! Estelle Ryan is one of the few authors I always buy without even reading what the book's about.

Another excellent book in the Genevieve Lenard Series. Great characters, wonderful storyline, and enough going on to hold my interest. Like the others in this series, this gets placed in my Read Again Collection on my Kindle. I look forward to the next book.

Well I really admire the characters and writing of The Estelle Ryan Series, I was really uncomfortable with the plot. And while I recognize that discomfort makes me grow, this is not the growing discomfort I want it. While I understand the subject matter is real, I didn’t like reading about it

Best one yet!
Genevieve Lenard and her associates are in the thick of intersecting investigations in this novel. It appears that new members are going to be added to the team in the future and they will only add to chaos that Dr Lenard abhors, but is learning to love. Caelen is sweet, but annoying, neuroatypical and visually and geographically super smart. Judith brings another known member of law enforcement to the group, so Manny will no longer have to shoulder that burden alone. Judith also brings a dog to the mix. Genevieve's reaction to the dog is wonderfully written. Nikki now has friends of her own, who I am pretty sure will be seen in future books. Just how much and how well Caelen and Judith will contribute to future investigations remains to be seen, but with how fully fleshed out both characters are in this book it would be a shame to not allow them to continue to interact with the rest of the team on future cases.
The pacing in this book is superb. It allows the reader to feel the frustration of the team at each roadblock they encounter and then builds to a pulse pounding, heart racing climax near the end that actually has the reader wondering if the entire team will survive this encounter with Dukwicz. Once again at the end of the book, not all of the criminals are in jail, so the team (especially Colin) will still need to watch their backs as they complete further investigations while tracking down the one who escaped capture.
This novel is more about team interaction and crime solving than it is about the background scenery, so there is a lot less descriptive narrative of the setting. In this case, that was a wise decision as it didn't detract from the all of the action within and the excellent pacing of this book. This doesn't mean that the reader would not enjoy seeing the floor plans for the building that houses Rousseau & Rousseau Insurance Company just to see the complete layout of Francine's private work space in the basement.
Vinnie and Daniel work out together, and along with part of GIPN, are still providing security and tactical support to Dr Lenard's team. Estelle Ryan masterfully uses the members of GIPN and the actual staff of Rousseau & Rousseau as periphery characters to lend texture and background elements to the main story.
This was such an exhilarating novel to read that I can't wait to read the next one in the series. Thank goodness I don't have to wait.

Hurrah for the introduction of a new autistic character! Trigger topics, though

Dr. Genevieve Lenard, the lovable autistic genius crime solver, is back with her team of (former) criminals and Interpol brainiacs, this time solving a tangled mess of Courbet forgeries that may or may not have to do with mysteriously disappearing college youth.

The most intriguing twist to this book is the introduction of Caelan, another autistic character, who enters on page one, looking for Dr. G. His quirks are different from Jenny’s (and he’s less adapted to functioning among neurotypicals than she is), but he seems to have information of use to the team. And as the non-neurotypical on the team, she is appointed the one to deal with him.

Jenny’s internal struggle as she takes on this challenge, as well as the various team members’ reactions to this interloper, provide a refreshing change of pace for a series that, in book 4, had gotten a tad bit dry (there’s only so much dialogue in rooms about what to do next to catch a killer via computer that one can take; book 5 has more variety, and Caelan’s introduction has a lot to do with that).

Be advised that the crime subject matter of these books is always gruesome, but this one is particularly horrific.

Thankfully, Estelle Ryan doesn’t linger on the climactic scenes. So many authors gratuitously draw out the violence, but Ryan keeps it rather crisp. Still, the knowledge of what happened beforehand might give you nightmares for weeks.

All I can say is I hope there are real teams like Dr. Lenard’s our there in the world.

And I will keep reading Estelle Ryan regardless!

In Dr. Genevieve Lenard's world, several events out of the ordinary set her team and her looking into things. An apparently homeless autistic fellow insists on telling the team, after coaxing, about a fine fake Courbet painting that sold on the dark web,. A student disappears. There is evidence that the very evil Dukwicz is active and nearby. The more the team looks into these things, the uglier the activities they find, human trafficking among other things.

The great pleasure in this series is the team's individuals, all good people, all very different, and frequently irreverent with one another. They have names for one another, often deprecating, but are an interesting way to know who is speaking. This reader particularly likes the banter between Francine ('supermodel') and Interpol agent Manny. The pace is compelling, the characters mostly enjoyable, the hidden internet world and skills interesting. This can stand alone, but I'd start with the first one to get back stories. Recommended and number six coming to me soon, hopefully with new characters Judith and Caelan re-appearing.

So horrific..

A forged Courbet leads to Colin's arrest but something about the arrest by Interpol doesn't ring true.. he manages to get the attention of two police officers and through them into the relative safety of a police station. A call to Manny and the team are trying to unearth why these two Interpol agents have the hots for Edward Taylor, Colin's alias at the time of arrest. Caelan, an autistic young man, has tracked the team down and is determined to get Genevieve and Colin to work on the finding the Courbet artwork he's found on the dark web. He's pushing Genevieve's buttons and getting him to balance his traits is proving difficult but she's got more than one case to look into.

As Nikki is asking Genevieve to help find Michael a student friend who has suddenly vanished. Leading to the discovery of many more missing students. The cases tie together to create a horrific case which tests everyone's limits to the very edge.

Can they rescue Michael and the other missing students before the clock hits it's deadline?

"I would never have normal in my life. I didn’t want normal in my life. But I had the safety of strong friends."

This was a shocking story of human trafficking and out and out greed. After college friends of Nikki and Rebecca turn up missing, Genevieve,Colin and the crew focus on clues given to them by a young non neuro normative man who tells them things they aren't sure they can believe let alone figure out. But in true Doc G style, at the very last minute all the puzzle pieces fall into place as the story comes to a close.

Although I haven't read Book 4, Book 5 ties up a few loose ends of Book 3 as Dr Genevieve is coming to terms with being herself in a world she thought she wouldn't ever be. That's the beauty of these stories, as violent as they present, they show an evolving soul. Highly Recommended 5/5

I really enjoy this series, particularly because of the character development. Ryan’s ability to introduce quality new, minor characters deepens our understanding of the main characters even more. Bouncing the two off of one another keeps the readers’ interest in the series and vested in the main characters. This particular novel needed this depth due to its extremely dark and sinister plot. At times, it was difficult to read, especially with human trafficking statistics so readily available, but the introduction of Caelan and Judith Joost gave readers a focus besides the dark plot. I love this series and will continue reading, but I hope some of the plots aren’t as evil as this.

This was not my favorite Genieve story. The crime was so appalling that I shoved the book away from me many times. Government assassination I can handle. Kidnapping teenagers to harvest their organs and hunt them like deer is a no.

I do love the interactions between the characters, but I feel it was diminshed in this book. It felt like everyone was reacting to Caelen and not each other. Caelen started off being very annoying. I know that isn't fair, but it's how I felt.

I loved that Francine took Manny shopping. And that he wore the clothes. In this book more than ever I wonder if they might get together. That would be great. Especially if they kept up this squabbling while dating.

Every time Tim, Daniel or Pink were mentioned I got a knot that something big or bad is going to involve them at some point. Tim had more lines than Phillip. Poor Phillip, he needs more scenes.

I really hope Vinnie's back story comes out soon. Genieve wondered about it a ton during this story. I'm really curious as to where it is going.

One last thought, there was no major romantic moment between Colin and Jenny. That was a major bummer. Honestly I read the books just for that. The rest is icing.

I'm quite a fast reader--normally I can finish a book of "normal" length within a day or so. Ryan's books take me a lot longer, not because I get bored and wander off, but because they're so intense and complex that I have to walk away and do something else before I can continue.

I am so fascinated by Genevieve, her "crew" and the family they have created together, the twisty, often traumatizing plots, the wealth of description and information contained, the way each book links to the one before.

This is a wonderful series and this book fits perfectly into the expectations Ryan has created for this series.

There is no way to concisely describe the plot in this book, except to say, "Wow"! The last 2 or 3 chapters are so tense! The book started out with 3 or 4 plot lines which seemed unrelated but Ms Ryan found a way to bring them together in a thrilling way. I've now read the first 5 books in the Genevieve Lenard series and am hooked. I love the mix of unusual characters working together plus the detailed descriptions of Genevieve's 'non-neurotypical' personality. I smile at each small step she makes in connecting with the other characters.

This is the 5th book in a series featuring Dr. Genevieve Lenard and her Interpol team. Everyone is back, Colin, Manny, Vincent, Francine and Nicole. A young man enters Dr. Lenard's place of work screaming for her and it appears he, too, is on the autism spectrum. Caelin is ranting about stolen art painted by Coubert. Looking into these forgeries, the team uncovers on the dark net, auctions featuring young college students but what are the auctions for? Quick summer read.

What is happening to all the students?

It is a good thing there are a few more books in this set by Estelle Ryan. I started reading these books and it is like an addiction, I just can't stop! The characters become friends and there is always a " hold your BREATH " time when you are worried for one or more of them. The books bring in Great artists and wonderful music ( mostly Mozart) and you can pull them up and listen to the music and look at the art!

Her best book yet.

Estelle Ryan’s understanding of the non neurotypical is outstanding. In The Courbet Connection the story starts going in one direction then quickly turns dark to a path you don’t see coming. As always Genevieve continues to learn how to deal with the neurotypicals around her. It is not easy but their love and respect for her makes her want to show them her love and respect.

The Courbet

The team solved a very complex crime perpetuated by an international assassin and three agents from Interpol. They pick up an auction on the dark web for a young person's organs with a follow up auction for the right to hunt down the person using rubber bullets. The team along with Calain is able to identify the area that the hunt is taking place and saved Nikki's friend Michael and three more sold off in the auction

I moved right from #4 to #5 and felt like I was part of the family of characters in this series. I am concerned that the original team in book 1 has increased by 2 new members in book 5. I do hope that the author explores the back stories on others rather than adding new characters. I like the old ones and yet need to know more. Fast paced and the tie in between the art world and the human traffic that occurs was scary - but made for good reading.

The series continues to be entertaining. But it also continues to be frustrating as all of the bad guys don't get arrested. Estelle Ryan has mastered the episodic novel with the bad guy linkage. 3 (or more??) novels in the series still to come. The depth of the characters which were unique at first continues but they are beginning to appear somewhat superficial to me.

Another fast paced mystery with lots of action. Some new characters were introduced- not sure if they will continue to work with this amazing team or not. I will have to wait for book 6 to see what will happen next. You really need to start reading from the first book to fully understand all the dynamics.

The team's mission in the book starts out dealing with art theft per usual but ends up solving heinous criminal acts via the dark net involving kidnapping young people, selling their organs, and hunting them for sport. A bit painful to read about but the team prevails, with the help of a new non-neurotypical character.

A favorite author

Discovered Estelle Ryan not so long ago, probably thru Bookbub, and quickly became addicted. Love her characters, the impossible plots, and the use of technology to solve crimes. But I like especially the relationships between all the team members. Can't put the books down until I've finished. Wonderful read.

The gang is at it again

Jenny and company have a twist this time. Not only are priceless masterpieces in the mix but also innocent young people and organ sales on the black market. The usual twists and turns that characterize Estelle’s wonderful cast of characters. Read almost non stop as I just didn’t want to put it down
