FREAKING FANTASTIC!!

The second book in this series is even better than the first!! This fantasy has me totally addicted and I need the next book, but this one hasn’t come out yet (a few more weeks). I have come to love some of these characters so much! The world building is fantastic and the different kinds of fae are so intriguing. I love this group that Aurelia has joined with, of course Rydian being my favorite. But they are such a group of damaged and dangerous fae. They each have a story. But as they grow closer to Aurelia they become like found family, and they are loyal and would die for their found family. I love this group so much!! Tough as nails and the friends you want on your side. I highly recommend this to all those fantasy lovers, with big time exciting action scenes, with fae from different lands, gods that have made a mess of everything, a wicked woman who wants to become a god, and of course a romance. I want more and more and more of this AWESOME world!!

Another solid installment to this series and leaves you wanting book 3 asap.

We got a lot of action and plot happening in this book. It picks up right where book 1 left us with Rydian taking Aurelia away from her sabotaged wedding to his brother to the mysterious and dreaded Midnight Court.

This book gives us 3 POVs (Aurelia, Rydian, and Callan), which I thoroughly enjoyed because we get to see a lot of growth out of all 3 characters along the way. Also, they aren’t all always together so it’s nice to see what’s going on in different parts of the world and story.

I really enjoyed reading Rydian and Callan’s POV and I really want/need more interaction between the two and really their relationship backstory of them growing up. They are definitely a unique dynamic and there’s a reveal in this book that surprised me that the other didn’t know and would love to know what’s going through the other’s mind with it. They both were abused by their father but never really found a lot of common ground despite it. I just always love the brother dynamics in books and would like to see this one grow.

Honestly, Aurelia kind of annoyed me a lot of this book. She came off too self-righteous a lot throughout the story. In her mind, she was always right and the attitude of “losing hundreds to save 1 person I care for without a solid plan? Of course!” was annoying to read time and time again. She doesn’t really care if her plans and ideas seem to sacrifice others as long as she gets what she wants. How is that really different from the villain? I just think she has a lot of growing up to do.

Also, I’m a bit confused at times of the ages of characters and timeline of events that have happened in the past (curses, etc.). It’s never really fully laid out or contradicts each other throughout the story. A little bit more clearly laid out stuff like that would help.

The spice 🌶️ was slow freaking burn in this one too, but I will give it to the reason behind it was different than the typical story line you get. I also just wish too we’d get a biiiit more of the spice once we actually get there. I did the work, I’d like the reward lol. We got more than book 1 but still, I’ve read 450 pages, give me the slice I deserve lol.

I’m interested to see where book 3 goes but am disappointed to see it looks like it’s going to be another year before the next book comes out? I’m not sure why so long. ☹️

I've been dying for the sequel to Kingdom of Briar and Roses since I finished it. Now Prince of Secrets and Shadows is here, and it was epic! I liked it even better than the first. Heather continues this grand fairytale of love and loss, of epic battles and magic.

I demolished this book! I'm actually kind of sad that it's over already. Everyone has undergone a transformation. Rydian has changed his tune when it comes to Aurelia. Rydian was still a dark prince, but he was very swoony in this one. There was some pretty intense longing between him and Aurelia. I loved how protective he got. If you love the touch-her-and-die trope, then this book is for you. Aurelia is the embodiment of feminine rage. Between the secrets and political games, she had every right to be. I loved her fire; I mean that both figuratively and literally. Aurelia was a little leery of her power, and I can understand why; she's been raised on superstition and half-truths about Hel. Well, she's over it. Aruelia is really stepping into her power, and I can't wait to see what happens when she fully embraces it.

There was never a dull moment in this book. We visit different courts, the Naiads' kingdom being one. I pictured it as a cross between Aquaman (movie) and The Little Mermaid. The descriptions were epic. A few new characters were introduced. I especially love Keres; she grows on you. Heather laid out a little bit more lore. We learn more about the gods and the Fates and how things came to be. I also get a better picture of who Heliconia is, besides a greedy *itch, and what her ultimate goal is. There was just so much to love about this book. I have a ton of questions across the board. One of them is about the Midnight Court, especially after that ending, which thankfully wasn't too bad of a cliffhanger. However, that doesn't mean that I'm not eagerly awaiting the next book. Prince of Secrets and Shadows is a ten out of ten. If you like the first book, you'll love this one even more.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, so I went into this sequel equal parts excited and nervous. We all know the risk. Sometimes the sequel just doesn’t hit the same. I am thrilled to say this one not only delivered, I might have loved it even more.

The expanded world building was one of my favorite parts. Kingdoms that were only mentioned in book one are fully explored here, and the added detail makes the world feel richer and more immersive. You can feel the scope widening in the best way.

Aurelia, Rydian, and Callan all show real growth in this installment, which I deeply appreciated. And while I know we are all supposed to be firmly Team Rydian… I have to admit there is a small, growing part of me that is starting to love Callan. Or at least feel a dangerous amount of sympathy for him. The emotional complexity is getting deliciously complicated.

The side characters also shine in this book. While we met some of them before, this time we truly get to see their personalities come alive. They add so much depth and texture to the story.

The plot continues to build in layers, revealing new details that keep everything engaging and evolving. I love the direction this story is taking and how carefully everything seems to be unfolding.

And once again, mega bonus points for an ending that sets up the next book without emotionally destroying me with a brutal cliffhanger. I am impatiently waiting for what comes next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via the author)

4.5 stars

To start, I LOVE that Heather included a recap because even though I loved the first and have been looking forward to this since last year, I always forget exactly what happened.

I really enjoyed this. I loved the crew that became the found family right from the beginning and enjoyed their bantering. I loved the chemistry between Aurelia and Rydian. I also found myself a little surprised Callan had some growth?? While the end is what I'd call a "survivable" cliffhanger I still need more lol.

Favorite quotes
His eyes found mine, and something in them made my pulse quicken. “There was never any scenario where I would have let you walk out that door without me, Furious.”

“I’ll fight for you,” I said, voice rough. “I’ll be your blade, Aurelia. Point me where you need me. Wield me against every enemy that stands in your path. Until my last breath.”

“I decided to live for you,” I said. “For as long as I have.” I leaned in, my forehead touching hers. “I am going to fight beside you. Bleed beside you. Sleep beside you. And no god, no queen, no throne gets to tell me I can’t claim what I want before they try to take it away.”

Betrayed by the prince she loved. Hunted by the crown she destroyed. And somehow it just keeps getting worse (for her… amazing for us).

I devoured Prince of Secrets and Shadows and now I want to immediately reread it and book one.

Callan is not the boy we met before, and I have THOUGHTS.
Rydian keeping his distance?? Sir. Absolutely not.
The court politics? Messy, dramatic, and exactly what I want.

I love a heroine who’s done being everyone’s pawn and starts stepping into her power,
even when it scares her. The prophecy, the rival heirs, the betrayal… everything feels bigger and darker this time.

If you love morally gray fae princes, enemies to lovers tension that simmers forever, and strong touch her and die energy, you need this.

Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for book three.

I am simply floored by this book! I loved the pining and angst tension between Rydian and Aurelia. It was quite simply put- delicious. The yearning is top-tier and when they finally give it, the spice is out of this world.

I loved Aurelia's growth from princess to warrior and boy is she badass! And Rydian? Top shadow daddy of the century! This is easily one of my top reads of 2026! The action and adventure was on point and I couldn't stop reading! The overall plot of this series is unique as is the magic system.

And the evil queen is so bad, I love it. Her growing strength is scary!

Did I mention the spicy bathtub scene? Or the shadowy rescue? You definitely need to read this series to experience them both! I highly recommend it!

I am loving this series, and I can't wait for more!

Tropes:
🖤 Chosen One x Shadow Daddy
🖤 Enemies to Lovers
🖤 Touch Her and 💀
🖤 Who Did This?
🖤 Slow Burn

This book is a fantastic continuation of the series. We get to learn more about Rydian and who he is, along with Aurelia’s power. We get a new group of characters to fall in love with that are joining these two on their quest to protect the kingdoms, and we end the book with an even more unlikely combination of characters. I’m really looking forward to the next book!

I have been waiting for this release since reading the first book last year. I dare say that this one is better than the first. It is captivating. It’s engaging. It’s world building, character development, humor, snark, EVERYTHING.

Thorne, Slade, Daegel and Keres are badass sidekicks that you didn’t know you needed. They slide in humor exactly when it’s needed.

Aurelia and Rydian…my favorite characters.

This book is a magical masterpiece and I’m here for it allllllll!!!

I am obsessed with this series. I am so happy that I emailed the author and asked for the ARC of this book!
I loved this one even more than the first. The world building is even better, secrets are revealed, the action is almost non-stop and the group Aurelia has joined becomes more of a family, making it so hard to put down.
If you haven't started this series, you are seriously missing out on an exciting fae adventure.

4.5 star read for me. I enjoyed how in this book soooo many secrets were exposed. This book also has a great villain who seems unstoppable, so it will be interesting to see what happens in book 3. Overall this is a great sleeping beauty inspired Romantasy that has 3 person POV. I definitely plan to read book 3 when it comes out!!

holy moly!!

I’m trying to think of a genre that Heather isn’t good at and I can’t come up with anything. She is great at all the worlds that she writes. This is the second book in the series and I couldn’t put it down… unless i was forced to adult. Aurelia and Rydian…. Man chemistry off the charts… but Helconia will stop at nothing to get what she wants. And what she wants is everything.

The writing is amazing. It sucks you in and it doesn’t not spit you out. Heather makes you see what you are reading, so it’s like you are watching a movie. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

Prince of Secrets and Shadows is a recipe of a relentlessly determined FMC, an MMC that would sacrifice everything, and a world on the brink of systematically being consumed. All those incredients and more offer a grand reading experience.

The majority of this story was full on fighting. The fighting was beyond my comprehesion of what this would look like in real life, I know it's fantasy but I felt really bad for the ones that did die & the ones that were hurt really bad. The souls that were damaged or taken were the worse that I have read to date. I'm glad that Rydian & Aurelia were safe & reunited after the massive fight against the ice queen that thought she had everything given to her from her almost marriage with Callan.
