I’m typically not a murder mystery reader, hence my propensity for Nancy Drew, but I found myself drawn to this one and really enjoying it! Chavis pens this tale brilliantly, with all the historical details and dialogue. And while I pegged the right person as the killer from the get-go, that only made the ending even more satisfying to me.

I’m excited for book 2!

An excellent “whodunnit” with Life and Death personified, a cute cat companion named Stan, themes of gender and social inequality in context of the 19th century, providing a voice to the voiceless, and growing pains in relationships that often occur as people change and grow themselves over time.

YA and adult readers will love this book for the characters, the mystery, and the snark. This is 10/10 one you most certainly need to add to your shelf!

Leigh cheated death and survived tuberculosis, and as a consequence, not only she cas see death in his top hat and some Ghosts now, but she found out, and in a painfull way, that what she used to do couldn't be called living.
Leigh doesn't wanna be defined by society's standards, she doesn't want to be knwon only for marrying well, also, she doesn't want people to simply remember a killer's name but not his victimes'.
And so, as you surely must've figured it out, Leigh sets her mind on finding him and making him pay against all odds, her mother, her childhood friend and the whole high society and she isn't planning to do it in a ladylike way.

At first, I was annoyed by Leigh and sighed internally, oh no, not another rebelious brat. she seemed so childish and a bit cliché to me. But then, I started to understand her. She was awakening and, as it almost always happen, her entourage didn't understand nor support her. She escaped death, so now, she wanted to live and get others to do so as well.
The mystery was good, even if I had my doubts pretty early in the book, I liked to watch the events unfold.
The writing is fluid, the pace picks up pretty quickly and the characters are relatable. I loved the fact that Kat and Leigh had their differences and how they ended up getting over them, and also the way the compicity with Rosa got installed. Miss Moriah doesn't do things the easy way believe me 😂. Ofc, my favourite character was Casper, yes, not Stan 😅 and he's a bit of a mystery. As we simply got Jeremiah's side of his story, I really want to know more and hope he'll be back in the next installment.
The supernatural/fantasy part is a bit light, but this wasn't a bother to me as I wanted to read the book for the mystery part, plus, I really liked Leigh and the girls doing the investigating without and extra, supernatural, hand 😂.

This book was a thrilling mix of feelings and fun, and it most certainly never left me bored!

I loved the mystery element. At first, I was skeptical- mysteries are far from my favorite genre, because I don’t appreciate when murder as a means of entertainment- but this book was not that way. The murder was heavily felt… and those characters who did not heavily feel it were a disgrace and frustration to Leighanna, the main character.

I loved Leighanna. She was determined for justice. She knew what she wanted- to catch the killer of innocent lives- and would stop at nothing to get it. But she did not want it for herself or her glory. She wanted it for the sake of truth and fairness. She wanted it to prevent further violence and crime that society would try to forget like they had everything else. She hated the class system, and treated everyone as her equal.

Her escapades were hilarious, while often being heart-hammeringly risky. When her friends got involved, too, it was hard-telling what would happen.

I truly never was able to predict what was coming. Especially that ENDING?!?!? (Or maybe I just refused to acknowledge that could be coming?)

Moriah Chavis captured my heart with this one- through the aching, the determination, and the excitement, I was there with the characters. I will definitely be reading more of her work!

And… I really hope I get to see Leighanna and her friends and family again. I mean I barely scratched some of those characters’ surfaces, and relationships were building that I need more of! Plus, I feel like there is a lot more to the Life/Death thing…

Not to mention Stan. That kitty is a king.

Four stars because of the many mentions of “cursing” and other naughty or crude elements that felt a little unnecessary. None of the little things that irked me stole from my overall enjoyment of the book. There were just a few issues personal conscience!

I very much appreciate being able to read an early copy and review it!

I was very excited to get to read this. The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter was a lot of fun! Victorian era mystery? Ghosts? A FMC amateur sleuth who won't quit despite societal expectations? A refreshing take on the personification of Life and Death? A SIDEKICK CAT?? I absolutely loved this, I honestly could not have expected more from it.

The mystery was excellent with just enough of a red herring to mess you up a bit, but even if it doesn't throw you off, the reveal scene still will have you biting your nails.

Leighanna's persistence to solve the mystery not out of her own curiosity, but so that the victim will be remembered was absolutely lovely and really helped flesh her character out and feel more like a real person. I adored that part of her personality.

Overall, an excellent read if you want a fun, fast paced mystery and a heroine with intelligence and a backbone of steel.

'𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙𝙮, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣'𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙩.'

This was honestly such a good book.
Cozy, murder mystery, fantasy and an adorable sidekick cat named Stan.
At the beginning Leighanna annoyed me a bit but she 𝘥𝘪𝘥 end up growing on me.
I did start to understand her though. I mean, if you're a woman in the late 1800's, a time when women weren't allowed to do everything a man could, wouldn't you want to try to live as much as you could if you nearly died?
I love that Leighanna was doing what she wanted to despite social expectations.
She wanted to solve the murder, for her own curiosity yes, but also because she wanted everyone to remember the victim ─Jessilyn Cane─ and not the murderer.
I wasn't too surprised by the identity of the killer, but overall it was nicely done and had a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed the writing here, there were beautiful descriptions and imagery. Writing is a huge thing for me in books so if I don't like the writing style I most likely won't care for the book much.
I feel like there's potential for another book, possibly focusing more on Casper? The characters were great and I loved Life & Death personified, though I wish there was a 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 more of them.

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for allowing me to have an e-arc of this book!

The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter was such a refreshing read for me because it explores a concept unlike anything I have read before. Set in the year 1890, it does not only deliver a gripping fictional mystery, it also gives us a glimpse into what society was like back then. The social norms, the expectations, the way people behaved, all of those elements give the story so much character.

From the very beginning, the book pulls you right in. A story centered around life and death and how those two forces can collide all at once is already fascinating. As a big fan of murder mysteries, I knew this would be right up my alley, but I did not expect to enjoy it this much.

That said, I am giving it 4 stars. In the middle the pacing felt a little slow, and I think the plot could have been expanded beyond just the murder. Diving deeper into different storylines would have made the narrative even stronger. Still, I really do love the story overall.

If you pay close attention, you might be able to guess who the culprit is, but not too easily. And honestly, that is what I love about mysteries. Either we are completely shocked by the reveal, or we end up thinking, “Oh my gosh, that makes so much sense.” This book definitely falls into the “oh yeah, of course” category, with subtle clues scattered along the way for careful readers to catch.

I also found myself wanting more for the characters, especially when it comes to their personal relationships. I would love to see a sequel. More cases to solve, more development in her love life, more exploration of her brother’s story, and more insight into how women investigators could challenge the expectations of their time. There is just so much potential for a book two, even if I am not very hopeful it will happen.

Overall, I really liked this book. If you enjoy murder mysteries, a sprinkle of historical atmosphere, and a little romantic vibe, then this is a great read for you.

I have had the honor to read this book as an ARC read though I have definitely waited till the very last minute with this review simply because I have been trying to come up with a coherent thought that I could make into a review! 🤣😭

this was a very well written book that had me questioning myself till the end with lots of twists and turns!

this was my first time reading a mystery, so I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into when I signed up, but I was not disappointed. This book was everything a good mystery ought to be!

the plot was twisty, and I absolutely loved how life and death were personified as people. it's really added to the overall suspense

this was a perfect book for someone if they like: Mysteries, Enola Homes, and cozy fall vibes!

“…society liked the idea of tragedy, but they didn’t want any part of it.”

I love a Victorian story, especially a mystery, AND this one included the paranormal as well. The characters of Life and Death and the circumstances under which they show up is unique and added so much to this tale.

Leighanna was such a lovable character and I loved her perspective on life and her fight against what was a “woman’s place” in Victorian society. Stan the cat was great, too.

I wasn’t shocked by identity of the killer, but it was very well done and a satisfying ending.

I will be thinking about this read for a long while. By FAR one of my favorites of the year. It perfectly combined history and fantasy, so it’s perfect for lovers of both genres!

The mystery had many twists and turns, even with the main suspect remaining the same the whole time. New readers will be FLOORED by the ending, however.

I appreciated the wide range of characters, both female and otherwise, but there was something satisfying to me about the main sleuths being a girl squad, without demeaning the importance of the guys to the plot.

Romantic subplots? Subtle but absolutely top tier. I ship all of it SO hard. If a sequel comes, I will 100% come back for more.

Set against the atmospheric background of Victorian England, readers will enjoy this original whodunit. With a gutsy young heroine who is trying to find her place after a near brush with death, readers will cheer her on as she slips from one sometimes humorous, sometimes dangerous predicament after another.

The author skillfully opened the book with a scene that will grab readers attention and hold them captive to the end. I think the plot was expertly paced, with clues parceled out at all the right times, allowing the reader to solve the case along with Leighanna.

Leighanna gains the aid of her friends as she takes the investigation of a young woman's murder upon herself, after local law enforcement has attributed it to Jack the Ripper and passed the case along. Racing against time, Leighanna finds her relationships with family and friends strained as she seeks justice. I was not initially drawn to Leighanna, but with skillful character growth, I was a fan by the end of the story.

A strong theme of finding one's purpose in an era where women's roles in society are beginning to be challenged is threaded throughout. The paranormal aspect is a very small portion of the story, mostly it is an engaging coming of age mystery.

Content: clean read. Reference to a few paranormal events. Reference to violent crime. Marketed for young adults, I would recommend mid teens, but probably not early adolescents.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Our story follows Leighanna Pauley and we meet her on her death bed. Except.. she doesn’t die. Touched by both life & death, she is granted the ability to see a ghost and helps said ghost solve her murder. All set in the historical year of 1890.
And we mustn’t forget my favourite character, her cat Stan. 🐟

I have to say that my absolute favourite part of this book were the personified characters of life and death. I loved the entire concept and it was so well done and entertaining to read about!

I adored Leighanna’s determination and zest. She was determined not to let society forget about an innocent girl murdered, and it was an admiral journey to watch play out.

Not only is the story beautifully written, filled with gorgeous imagery and descriptions, but the actual mystery was so good!! I read this book so fast, it was hard to put down. There was one scene near the end (iykyk) that had me physically TENSE. I was very much invested.

And no spoilers but the end????? I need more 😭😭😭 So good!!!!!! So painful!!! All of it!!

And thank you so much to the author for the ARC!

I love historical fantasy and I love a mystery, so this was one of my most anticipated releases for 2025. And I did like it! The mystery was interesting, the fantasy element was fun (the interludes of life and death were my favorite parts tbh), and I liked the surrounding cast a lot.

I had my issues with Leighanna herself, but that's okay, lol. She continuously actively makes problems and then is offended when the people around her call her out for making problems 😅 She's doing the right thing, she just goes about it terribly. If I liked her more, I probably would've loved the book. But overall it was a strong second showing from Chavis and I'm very intrigued to see where she goes next! 3 stars from me!

This book was fantastic!

Life, Death, and Time being personified was a really fun twist to the murder mystery genre. I particularly liked the scenes from Death's perspective because I found him really likable. I also loved Time's fashion sense. I could read a whole book about Time, just to see how she was dressed because you just know she's the type to make dramatic wardrobe changes.

Leighanna is an interesting main character, although she is a character that I could see some people getting frustrated with. Her not fitting into her society after her near death experience makes sense, but at the same time, her refusal to play along with society's game often does her a disservice. I like the explanation for this given at the end, although I hope the details are elaborated on in a future book.

I really related to Leighanna feeling the growing rift between her and her best friend Katrina. Friendships can be hard, and I love stories that feature strong friendships, even when they go through some turbulence.

And for the mystery, when a girl can talk to ghosts, how hard can solving a murder be, right? Harder than you'd think. Even when Leighanna is sure of who it is, she has to find proof and convince the dismissive police to take her seriously. Odds are stacked against her, but she refuses to give up, and that is what makes her a great main character.

DNFed at 53% Marked as Read, since I made it at least half way through.

2.5 rounded up to 3.

I typically enjoy Moriah's work, but this one just wasn't for me. I'm not the target audience to begin with, so that was always a risk. Historical fiction (even with supernatural elements) isn't really my thing the vast majority of the time.

Objectively, this is a good book, so no worries on that front. Although, I did run across one misuse of lay/laid, and there was one word that popped up so often, I'll be quite content to never see it again. But other than that, there were no quality issues that I noticed.

The curious case of the midnight Specter is so unique and special. I love the death, life and time are all real tangible characters. I love the murder mystery set in the 1800s. I love Ms Pauly, and all her friends and a certain enemy. This is a story the hooks you in chapter one and has you turning the page to the very end wanting more from Leighanne. It's Agatha Christie meets Nancy drew.

I think fans of YA mysteries will enjoy this one. However, it kind of fell flat for me personally. I will say that I liked the prose, and the words had a nice flow. The personification of Life and Death reminded me of Belladonna (just that aspect). The FMC is strong-willed and goes against the grain of society's expectations for the time, but instead of coming across as empowering, it felt cringy to me, because of some of her actions toward others. She is only seventeen, and I do think that should still be taken into account. This is more historical-inspired than historical fantasy, imo. The paranormal aspect was *okay.* I think it’s a bit cliché, but since I’m a YA fan, I’ve read many YA books with similar characters and plots, so that might be a factor as to why I didn’t enjoy it like I thought I would. I still think people should give it a try if they enjoy murder mysteries in a historical-inspired fantasy setting, because ultimately, it just wasn’t for me, but I have a feeling I will be in the minority (which is a good thing).

I received an eARC for an honest review.

Spice level: None (very YA appropriate)
Content warnings: It’s a murder mystery, so that’s pretty much it.

Synopsis: After a severe illness leaves Miss Leighanna Pauley's soul suspended between life and death, her new ability to see ghosts drives her to start investigating their murders. But with society deeming women unfit for such work, can she find any evidence before the killer strikes again?

Review: This was a promising concept but I struggled with how immature and stubborn Leighanna was. The rapid pacing of the book was also jarring, shifting from her near death experience to an inexplicable need to investigate murders. I loved how Life, Death, and Time were portrayed and wish we had seen more of them.

With thanks to the Publishers for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I love the fact that this isn’t your stereotypical mystery story, don’t get me wrong though I love the big name detectives out there! This took a turn away from the traditional “I have a superior intellect and can solve this in a few days” type of story. The case doesn’t easily come unraveled, clues and information don’t come free. It’s written in such a way that captivated me immediately and I didn’t want to stop reading. It made me feel for the characters because, even though it’s a fictional story, the characters have a realness to them. Something that makes them relatable. I will definitely be reading this one again soon!

The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter was such a fun whodunnit, featuring a spunky high class young lady and her sidekick, Stan (love giving cats people names- mine are Kevin and Jeff 😂)

While Leighanna fights the sexist and elitist system of England in the late 1800's, she also hunts down a murderer.

She pushes the limits on society's expectations and norms, gets herself into quite a few tricky situations, but has the grace to at least admit her faults and apologize when she's gone too far or caused harm.

I loved the elements of sibling camaraderie, and the growing pains of friendship as people enter adulthood and become different versions of themselves.

I loved the characters Death and Life and the role they played, particularly Death as he ushered people to the other side. I also liked the paranormal aspect of the specter herself, urging Leigh to achieve her goal and unmask the killer. (I'm not usually big on ghosts but this was very well done).

As someone who listens to true crime podcasts, I identified with Leigh's desire to remember the victim above the killer.

Overall, this was a very fun murder mystery. A bit predictable, but in a satisfying way. I would read another if this had a sequel. I liked the characters, and feel like this cast has a lot of potential for more stories!

I received an advanced copy of this book, but everything stated here is my own honest opinion.

Where do I even start! I loved this book so much. From the beginning to the end, I was hooked. The beginning reminds me of Belladonna by Adalyn Grace, because of the Death and Life personified. The banter between the two was great. Leighanna has the spunk and wits of Enola Holmes (mainly the book series) and the relatability of all my favorite classics. The mystery is very intriguing. The story revolves around the murder of Jessalyn Caine, who the police suppose was killed by Jack the Ripper. Leighanna doesn't believe that, and is determined to find the truth, no matter the cost. Moriah does a great job of leaving hints without giving the plot away. I began to guess the true murderer about halfway through, but even then, I wasn't sure. My favorite quote was "Friendship was a complicated web. It survived on threads of events, emotions, and similarities. But when the wind blew, it lost a little of its strength, the emotions that carried each thread snapping and waving in the air."
I will definitely read again, and I'd recommend this to lovers of clean historical mysteries.

I so enjoyed this whodunit murder mystery! The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter is both a touch of ghost story and turn of the century sleuthing adventure.

If you enjoy murder mystery tales with ghostly apparitions, then you're going to love it. Leighanna Pauley reminded me of Miss Scarlett from the BBC period drama of the same name. She's curious, driven, and before her time. If you like police/private detective shows in that vein, this book is also for you!

Fair warning, though, there are some gruesome and macabre descriptions of murder. They are well done and definitely evoke shock at the horror and sadness.

Join Leighanna, her cat Stan, and reluctant friends to solve the mystery of Jessilynn Caine's untimely demise. Help them fulfill the newfound desire to remember the name of the victim, to bring her justice.

This is not for young readers or the faint of heart! With reference to Jack the Ripper, you get the idea!

The characterization of Death & Life were my favorite, and even though I'm allergic to cats, I think we all need a Stan in our lives!

I made the mistake of reading this surprisingly quaint murder mystery at night and stayed up way too long to finish it. Now, I'm curious if you can figure out whodunit before I did!

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing an ARC of The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter! This honest review is, of course, all my own for the benefit of my future self and readers like me.

I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.

The Curious Case of the Midnight Specter is phenomenally done, just wonderful! Leighanna is a lovable character from the start. There is a whole mix of historical fiction, paranormal and fantasy, and mystery. At the center of the book, it is a ghost story, reminding me a little of a mix of Crimson Peak almost, but a tad less dark! There is also a dash of Bridgerton, only in the time-period feel and Leighanna’s frustration with all the expectations and little freedoms women have. Speaking of Leighanna, I really did love her. She is immediately an understandable character, speaks up for herself, and has valid frustrations with the time. The book also explores themes of women’s lack of freedom and dare I say oppression during this time, in how Leighanna cannot do what she wants or go out without a chaperone do to safety issues, how she’d be perceived, and the like. I was so frustrated alongside her most of the time! And while the other cast of characters is just wonderful, in that you’re genuinely interested in all of them, there were times when Leighanna’s friend Katrina frustrated me as much as she frustrated Leighanna! However I did think their friendship was realistic and still had its sweet moments. And of course Leighanna’s mother. Despite thinking she was looking out for Leighanna, I felt so much frustration on Leighanna’s behalf. At society, those who followed it, it was all written very well and perfect at getting you in Leighanna’s head. Luckily, there was always Stan the cat to love. I love a good beloved pet in books to bring a smile to my face, and Leighanna’s too!

In the same realm of characters, the way Life and Death are depicted is so unique and wonderful. Death is not villainized, he is simply described as being more than “…the harbinger of the end, but a guide into the afterlife.” And Life has her own curiosity and energy, and it felt so interesting to witness them interact as friends, not foes. It never feels forced in but rather a natural part of the story, centered on Leighanna. The way Death and Life would appear in some scenes were just so good, like when Leighanna is looking through the Carmines things and Death appears. It was all so good, so unlike anything I have read with ghost stories and the like!

This is a story for YA and teen readers but it has good overlap for adult readers too. I found the mystery very well plotted to where even I was unsure who the murderer was and boy was I in for a shock! The story ends in a bittersweet, somewhat sad note, though I felt it was realistic. I couldn’t help but wonder if there would be a sequel to this, or if it is a standalone? I think it is because I just kept finding myself wanting more!

I think the story has something for everyone, but most of all, a strong and bullish heroine who knows what she needs to do and isn’t afraid to keep at it despite so many people telling her she shouldn’t. She does what is right and is very admirable, but also not perfect, and she messes up plenty of times for things to feel real, especially a young woman in that day and age trying to solve a murder. Some of it also reminded me of Enola Holmes in that way! I just was getting so many vibes and feeling from this book, all in a good way of course, and it made me think what a wonderful movie or series this book would be. I definitely enjoyed my time with it and I flew through it. I certainly want to read more from this author. It is always a joy for me when I find an author who can weave entertaining stories and also has a style of writing that is appealing. That is when I know, as with this one, that the story is a strong five stars.

Moriah Chavis writes a critique of British high society in the Victorian age, holding up a mirror to show that their discomfort with death and obsession with propriety isn't so different from our own. I was gifted a copy by the author and this is my honest review.

When Leighanna almost dies from tuberculosis, it gives her a new perspective on life and death, and she loses many of the inhibitions that a girl of her station may have been subject to before. This drives a wedge between her and many of her family members, closest friends, and acquaintances as she adopts a stubborn, quirky, "not like other girls" attitude. This is at times, annoying and self-righteous as she can't see past her own nose and disavows the skirts that she presumably grew up her whole life wearing and would be more-or-less comfortable in, but is at other times, extremely justified and endearing as she takes up the mantle of spunky girl detective who will put to rest a case that's being ignored by the powers that be. I thought the tension between Leigh and her overly-protective family members and friends was written pretty well, as I could see both sides of the conflict but I was still rooting for a resolution. I also enjoyed how Leighanna recruited an ally in the police cheifs daughter, so she had a team of sleuths by the end of the story like Nancy Drew with her two friends Bess and George. I also appreciated her kindness to the lower class workers she encounters, and her friendship with her maid, Etta, who was in her corner regardless of the shenanigans. Etta was a great character and I'm not just saying that because we share a name lol. We need to see more authentic female friendships in fiction and I think Moriah Chavis represents that very well here.

The mystery was fantastic, and I had fun puzzling out the clues alongside the girls. It was written in such a way that you received information alongside the characters, and due to Leighanna's illness and her status as a *girl* in high society people are trying to keep her in the dark. This means the characters never have inside info that the readers do not, and we're invested in the struggle to uncover more information.

The personification of Life and Death in the story were also interesting. I loved the scenes where Jesslyn Caine's ghost appears, and Leighanna slowly honing her sense for impending doom. Death seems to have more an active role in the story as he raises the stakes, while Life is there to be a foil, but I definitely enjoyed their dynamic. I kind of wished they were more involved as characters but in the end the story was about Leighanna and the mystery and her relationships, and they are in-fact concepts.

All in all I think this is a great YA mystery and a fun historical fiction novel. Get this girl a suffragette pin ASAP.
