Violetta Cq'linns—a relentless homicide detective on the world of K'lais—lives by the law. But when she digs too deep into department corruption, she finds herself framed for the one crime she didn’t commit… murdering the chief of police.
Now, she’s a fugitive with a target on her back, hunted by the very force she once called family. With nowhere to turn, her only lifelines are a ruthless crime lord demanding a dangerous favor—and an old flame whose loyalties are as unpredictable as her own fate.
But Violetta isn’t going down without a fight. She was raised to survive. Trained to finish what she started. And the people who set her up? They have no idea what’s coming.

I love reading a book that has a strong female protagonist. J.F. Posthumus has done it again-- Violetta is an upstanding homicide detective. But she ends up having to trust two people who may do her more harm than good.
Are you a fan of Cats? Did you like Brooklyn 99? Do you watch Godzilla and think "That giant lizard would make a great cop"? When you watched The Godfather, did you think "This movie would be much better if it happened on a planet populated with cat people"?
This book delivers three out of four. It also confirmed what I've always known, which is that full cats cannot be trusted and are evil, but if you could make them half cat that they'll be okay. Seriously, cats must be stopped and dogs are way better.
Moving on, this book delivered on action, intrigue, romance, dragons and some flying furry creatures that fight dragons. The entire time I was reading this book I felt like I was riding a unicorn through a vibrant green forest with an endless supply of tacos made with some local mushrooms that I was assured were safe to eat. Remember to buy local, folks, because they would never give you a hallucinogenic mushroom so they can take advantage of you.
The fact that this series will have its second and third books out in short order is a great because waiting for sequels is annoying. As I type this review I find myself salivating at the thought of reading the next one, or maybe it's the brisket in the smoker. The important thing here is that I'm really hungry for the next brisket, umm... I mean book.
Summary: This book is as delicious as a brisket fresh out of the smoker, served with a nice potato salad, grilled corn, and some banana pudding for desert. So buy this book today, pre-order the sequels, and why not pick up a smoker and a grill too?
