On the avenue, everybody was stopping and slapping Dad five. Every kind of person from the suits to the suspects talking to him like h somebody. He moved with a bop, an intentional limp that everybody in my neighborhood walks with. Like all Black men are recovering from a charley horse. Too much running. Like they carrying a bunch of weight but are cool enough to only hold it on one side fo the body. Like they got the whole world hanging off the end of a shoulder strap.
Seeing Carl Lewis do the long jump had me as mesmerized as his sprint did four years ago when I saw it for the first time. I rewound it. Just that part. Watched it all happen again. The step and leap and liftoff. The running through the air, and the landing in the sand, grains of it flying up all around him. I sat as close as possible to the TV screen, right up on the VCR so I could watch the jump, then watch the jump, then watch the jump, my finger slapping the rewind button, while my parents pretended to hate each other, loudly, down the hall.
