Deadly Nightshade

Rate this book
A steamy dark romance intended for mature audiences, 'Deadly Nightshade' is a twisted tale of love between two characters wrecked with their own traumas in a town lined with red flags. It is a standalone novella inspired by characters from Tim Burton's classic - 'The nightmare before Christmas' - This book is NOT a retelling and has no affiliation to the original work, it is simply inspired by the characters.

HER SOUL IS DARK AND DAMAGED. HIS IS A LITERAL NIGHTMARE

BLURB -
Sold to a merciless mafia Kingpin, to clear her father’s debts Suzy has known nothing but depravity at the hands of deplorable men. New to the sleepy little town of Hollow Hills, any hope she has of a happily ever after has long since been shattered.

Until she’s staring down the barrel of the masked strangers gun.

Jax Carter believed in very little, especially God, the suspicious deaths of his parents & the years under the harsh scrutiny of the local church saw to that. Channeling his past traumas, Jax seeks vengeance on any man in town with a tally of sins against his name. Jax is exactly what everyone suspects……an unhinged psycho with a twisted Robin Hood complex. But maybe for her….he could be different.

It’s only a matter of time before Suzy uncovers Jax’s twisted secret & the true depravity haunting Hollow Hills comes to the surface….

“The devil will come for me eventually Little Doll, and when it does, all I will take from this life, is the memory of you”

If you love the idea of a Golden Retriever Psycho with morally grey methods, who would happily burn down the world with a bloodied smile on his face for our Curvy FMC, then this is the book for you. Sometimes the Villain gets the girl. So strap in for a bumpy ride, because the number one way to leave Hollow Hill's, is six foot deep in an unmarked grave....

Audiobook
Duet Narration Alyssa Avery & James Joseph

Thank you Blue Nose Audio for this ALC
Overall I really enjoyed the vibes of this audio. The narration was done very well, the accents gave this like an old English feeling based in the ‘60s but it’s modern days which was a fun feeling while listening.

The story was impressive and I liked the overall premise of the torment and trauma both FMC, Suzy and MMC experienced. Mentions of smelling like motor oil isn’t widely used but gave me a clear visual, and appreciation where (personally) I’m drawn to that smell. I loved the possessive need to protect and the vigilante act of our MMC, Jax. Check your triggers, this is a dark mystery romance with forbidden romance inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Deadly Nightshade

“I don’t deserve her love, but I’m fucked up enough to know I’ll take it.”

star rating: 4.5
spice rating: 2🔥🔥

A golden retriever psycho and damaged soul vixen wrapped me up in rose vines and wouldn’t let me go. I love how the spice took a backseat although the chemistry wasn’t lacking. You definitely feel it throughout this book. (And I proudly say that as a self proclaimed smut connoisseur) but i promise the plot drags you in more. We start off at a bank robbery and the story takes form from there.

"You’re mine, I’m yours, till hell summons us.”

This isn’t a retelling more of a reimagined story that’s inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas and it’s fun finding the nods and nuggets along the way. There’s almost a star-crossed or fated mates feeling to this story. it’s simultaneously fast paced as well as slow burn. Jax might be a psycho but he has a heart of gold and Suzy may be a doll but that doesn’t mean she isn’t de*dly.

“There is a happiness that tickles the edges of our madness, little doll, you just have to be a little deranged to appreciate it in all its tarnished beauty.”

As soon as I heard a dark romance inspired by A Nightmare Before Christmas, I was all over this! Reminds me of one of my favorite authors Charity B and her book, Skeleton King.

I’m not ashamed to admit how wildly I enjoyed the gore and violence. My cold, dead heart loved every second of brutal revenge. So much so, that the romance took a far backseat.

Don’t get me wrong. The chemistry between Jax and Suzy burned bright. The smut was exactly what I wanted.

Either way Ms. Kermack is an amazing writer with vivid prose and lines that hook me in even deeper. I’m highly impressed. This is my first book by her but it’s certainly not my last. I look forward to both her future books and gobbling up her back catalogue.

ALC Review: Deadly Nightshade
Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Dark, twisted, and addictively gritty, Deadly Nightshade delivers a haunting love story brought to life through powerful duet narration by Alyssa Avery and James Joseph. Suzy’s escape from a life of depravity lands her in Hollow Hills—straight into the crosshairs of Jax Carter, a masked vigilante with a tortured past and a violent mission.

The chemistry sizzles, the trauma runs deep, and the Nightmare Before Christmas vibes add a beautifully eerie edge. Perfect for fans of dark romance with a splash of vengeance and a whole lot of spice.

Thank you to @bluenoseaudio and @billiejadekermackauthor for sending me an ALC to review. Releases June 24th!

The inner weird kid in me is SCREAMING.

Like, how did this author take my favorite childhood movie—yes, that one—and twist it into a grown-up, unhinged, sinfully delicious dark romance? I feel emotionally attacked in way that has me thanking the author asking for more.

But before I go full feral fangirl mode, can we take a moment to bow down to the narrators? Joseph and Avery? They ATE. Their duet narration was so vivid, it felt like they reached through my headphones, slapped my mind's eye awake, and whispered, “Buckle up, babe.” Shoutout to Blue Nose Audio for consistently delivering productions so crisp and immersive, I forget I’m not in a gothic fever dream.

Now let’s talk about this book. When I picked it up, I had no idea what I was walking into. Zero expectations, full vibes. And then… boom. Suddenly I’m picking up on hints—like why does this feel so familiar? Oh, I don’t know, maybe because it’s loosely inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas... except there’s no Disney filter, just blood, vengeance, masked madness, and a dash of vigilante justice that made my dark little heart sing. Not a retelling, but baby, the aesthetic is THERE.

Enter Jax: a masked, justice-dishing, totally unhinged psycho golden retriever MMC with possessive energy so strong it had me side-eyeing my thermostat. Joseph’s delivery of every growled “good girl” and darkly tender “mine” had me questioning my biological functions. Was I ovulating? Who’s to say.

And then there’s Suzy. Sweet, sharp, savage Susie. Avery’s performance gave her so much depth—every snarky inner monologue, every badass moment of quiet strength, every revenge plot hatched with eyeliner precision? I was in her corner with pom-poms and a knife.

This book is gritty, atmospheric, and so full of heat it needs its own fire warning. It’s dark romance with a twist of gothic noir, a sprinkle of vigilante justice, and a hero who’s basically what happens when a golden retriever grows fangs and goes feral in the name of love.

So if you're into:
🖤 Morally gray mayhem
🦴 Protective psychos with soft spots (only for her)
🎭 Masked mystery men serving justice and spice
💋 Broken girls finding their bite again

…then why are you still reading this review and not one-clicking it?

Big thanks to the author and Blue Nose Audio for the complimentary chaos—I mean, audiobook. I devoured this and I’ll be thinking about Jax’s hand necklace kink until further notice.

Deadly Nightshade is one of those dark little novellas that does exactly what it promises. It’s quick, gritty, bloody, and full of familiar-but-fun tropes that dark romance readers eat up without shame. You’ve got the girl sold off to pay her deadbeat dad’s debts, a truly scarred heroine who’s tougher than she looks, and a broody, unhinged golden retriever of a man who absolutely kills people and then probably pets stray cats when no one’s watching. Peak chaos with a side of softness.
It’s not trying to be the next great literary masterpiece, and honestly, that’s what I liked about it 🤷🏼‍♀️ . It gives you everything you’re here for without dragging it out or feeling recycled. My only real complaint is that it is a novella. These characters had layers that could’ve really popped with a longer format. I wanted more time to sit in the tension and peel them back a bit. But for what it is? It hits.
The audiobook performance: That’s where this thing shines. Alyssa Avery is always solid, and she handled the FMC’s vulnerability and edge SO well. But James Joseph? Sir. That man’s voice walked straight out of a Guy Ritchie film and into my headphones. He brought this GRITTY, dangerous energy that made the whole thing feel cinematic. I swear I kept expecting Brad Pitt to pop in and mumble about caravans. 😆
If dark romance and a little emotional damage are your thing, this one’s worth the listen. It’s intense, a little unhinged, and exactly the kind of story that makes you grin while questioning your morals. Definitely recommend the audio version for full effect. 💯 READ THIS ONE WITH YOUR EARS!!

I should start by saying how much I love fairytale/myth retellings/reimaginings. And this is no different! I love The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I absolutely adored this reimagining! I love all of the little elements and nods to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Don’t get me wrong though, this story is completely different than the inspiration. But having those recognizable aspects in the book got me excited while I was reading, almost like a secret between the author and me.
This is the second book that I have read by this author, and I have loved them both! This is the author’s first foray into dark romance, and she knocked it out of the park! I would consider this one a dark grey romance because I read a fair amount of DARK books, and this one isn’t as dark in comparison to those... But if you’re looking to dive into the dark romance world, or want something a little darker but not TOO dark, this is the one!
Still, with the darker themes, check your TW if you need to. There is a list of them toward the front of the book.

This was my first book by Billie Jade Kermack and let me say it was definitely an intriguing ride. This story has so much action and drama. It quickly pulls you in as it starts right off the bat with an interesting bank robbery. I love Jax’s thoughts and how yeah he might be a bad boy but he has a heart of gold at the same time. You absolutely have loved sister Margarete. She had me laughing at times how nonchalant she was. Suzy has been through a lot in her life and you can feel her pain at times. As Jax and Suzy grow closer you see how strong their chemistry is. This story is darker and extremely well written and developed. You have crooked cops, people that think they can do anything they want to the little guy and definitely have that feel of a completely corrupted town. It is definitely a fantastic read and won’t disappoint.

I loved this tragically beautiful love story between Jax and Suzy.

From the get go this book reels you in! Who knew a bank robbery could lead to a hot as all get out love story!

Jax is the epitome of “tall, dark, and handsome” and he completely embraces the darkness for the sake of the good. Suzy, despite the path she was forced into, still has so much fire inside of her. I loved that about her and how Jax saw this in her right away. Every interaction between them was heart melting and HOT at the same time!

This is a novella so it is short but full of steam and suspense. A perfect palate cleanser in between longer books, series, or when you just need a change of pace! Check the trigger warnings as there are dark themes in this book.

I’ll start with this—the audiobook was phenomenal. The narrators absolutely nailed it, from the emotions to the accents. It added such a rich layer to the whole experience.

Now onto the story—Jax and Suzie are both deeply broken characters, but watching them come together and begin to heal through all the chaos was oddly beautiful. Their story is messy, violent, obsessive, and very much on the darker side… with plenty of smut to keep things extra spicy.🥵

If you’re in the mood for a quick, dark, and intense read that doesn't hold back on the gore or emotion, this one’s a solid pick!

This Nightmare Before Christmas inspired serial unaliver romance had me in a chokehold. Jax is the vigilante hero of Hollow Hills, planting roses for his sins. Suzy has spent her life under someone's control, and when Jax gives her the desire to fight back, she runs with it and unleashes her fury. He's finally found his match in a curvy bombshell of a valkyrie. I absolutely loved their dynamic of unaliving and madness. Unhinged psycho romance at its best. I also really liked the nods to the Tim Burton tale, which worked out for the story to give it another layer. Fans of the classic story will love the Easter eggs.

I instantly liked Kermack's voice and the flow of this story. I was intrigued by the chemistry between Jax and Suzy and eager to see how these two might collide as the story went along. The spicy bits sprinkled throughout were well-written and enjoyable as well. I enjoyed this book a great deal and can't wait to read more from this author. She pulled me into Jax and Suzy's world, and it was quite a bloody and emotional ride.

Wow!

I was instantly invested by the first line of this book. As the story progressed I fell in love with both characters. Suzy letting her fierce side came out was incredible! Jax is utterly hilarious. I loved his one liners. The way I cackled at so many 90 kids references.

This book was the perfect mix of banter, romance, spicy, and plot.

🎙️Alyssa Avery is INCREDIBLE in this book. This is my first time experiencing her narration but it definitely will not be the last.

🎙️James Joseph ! MY GOD!! The talent shown in this book had me FLOORED!

I immediately need more of his work, I’m now obsessed.

This book gripped me from start to finish I couldn’t put it down. I loved watching the growth of Jax and Suzy(little dolly) grow from the start to the end and how their characters changed so much and it reflected in the writing. This was a different take on Nightmare Before Christmas and it was done well.

Black roses

This book has it all from armed robbery to un@l!Ving to romance to spice to t0rtur3 to overcoming evil to coming into your own truth of who you are. Sometimes, it takes a little nun to use whatever means she has, like a man covered in Black roses to overcome the true evil in a town. Add in a little spitfire who uses nightshade as an aphrodisiac and you may just turn a black rose red with a few scars.

I really wanted to like this… I picked this up because of a TikTok video, and when I saw “Golden Retriever Psycho”? I thought, “That’s right up my alley!”. And the reviews are all 4-5 stars, but are we reading the same book?!

1- The book desperately needs to go through another round of editing. There were so many run on sentences and missing punctuations, that it took me out of the story.

2- The was no really romantic connecting between the two MCs. They both feel an instant attraction to each other on their first meeting, but there was no really building of a relationship. He was supposed to be obsessed with her after their first meeting, but I’ve read about OBSESSED MMCs, and this was not it. They were both in love and couldn’t imagine their lives without each other after ONE sexual encounter… be so for real right now! And the worst part? I don’t remember them ever actually TELLING each other that they were in love…

3- I feel like the majority of this book was an internal monologue, and I was bored to tears! Like ok we get it, can we have more dialogue between the characters? Maybe we can actually believe in their love story if they actually..idk? Talk more?!

4- This book was advertised as a novella, but it felt too long to be a novella, and too short to be a full length book. I felt like I was stuck in limbo, and maybe that’s why the relationship didn’t feel properly developed. In a novella, the attention is usually mostly on the main couple so that we can really believe in the relationship even though it’s a short book, but in this case, there were wayyy too many side characters and things going on on both their ends without each other, so it just didn’t work for me.

5- The pet names were 🤢 Doll? Dolly? My Dark Lord?! JAIL!

6- My dude was just way too good at getting away with YEARS of violence and murder, and there were no close calls with getting caught? Common now… I mean, yeah, everyone suspected, but for the whole town to basically know this about him but there being major investigations? Nah it’s a little far fetched for me.

7- That “plot twist” about Doc? I mean, was it even that big of a deal in regard to the story? For a girl to lose 3 fingers for figuring it out, I was expecting so MAJOR! I’m not upset.. I’m just disappointed 🙁

8- That last epilogue really gave me the ick.. I get that they’re both deranged, and I’ve read so twisted shit and don’t bat an eye at these things, but not with kids around. Why are these two grown adults making out and grinding on each other in front of a group of ORPHANS and a nun… why dressed in a Santa suit with his girl on him lap while they’re all waiting to tell Santa what they want this year.. Absolutely not!

This is my second new release book I’ve read from a random TikTok video in the last two days that has disappointed me so much after almost two months of consistent 4-5 star books, and I’m a little discouraged. I don’t know if all these 5 star rating are from friends and family since there are only 40 reviews, or maybe it just me, but this was a big No for me.

Overall Thoughts: This story takes you on a wild ride from the first chapter, and has an ending that will linger with you long after you finish this book. There is a lot that happens in this book, I don’t know how Billie crammed it all into a book this length. The flow of this story has so many questions in the beginning, with the journey that has highs and lows giving the reader a bit of whiplash, that finally results in an epic ending. Suzy is a deeply complex character with a range of emotions stemming from a background of pain and torture. Jax, has also been through more in his life than any one person should need to deal with and he takes that pain and focuses it on getting justice for those he can now, when he wasn’t able to when he was younger. Alyssa was amazing as Suzy, and is one of my favorite female British narrators, her voice is a perfect match for this complex FMC. James is just a favorite and his voice could soothe even the fiercest psychic of beasts. Corruption and pain are rampant in this book, so take heed before diving into this dark romance.

Narration: Duet narration, first-person present tense, multiple-POV with flashbacks

Tropes: Dark, @buse, s3xual exploitation, psycho MMC, b3aten down FMC, masked man, scars, betrayal, s3x trafficking, secrets, torture, ‘who did this to you?’, unalivers, vigilante

Overall: 4
Spice: 3
Humor: 1.5
Drama: 3
Darkness: 3
Narration: 5

Suzy has known nothing but pain and and suffering from deplorable men since she was just a teenager. Moving to Hallow Hills with the man who has owned and traded her for years, may be the best thing to happen to her, when she meets Jax in the most unexpected of ways.

When Jax sees Suzy for the first time, he is so enamored with her, he forgets what he is doing, putting him in danger of being caught. Hating that she is trapped by a man he knows to be evil to his core, has him looking for ways to free her from him.

As Suzy and Jax get to know each other, their souls seem to recognize the battered and torn parts of each other, strengthening their bond, and their promises to themselves to do whatever they can to help make the other one whole again.

This was certainly a different read from anything I have read recently, but I was not against it. This story has a sort of Nightmare Before Christmas vibe to it but I think it has been a while since I have seen the movie because it did take me a bit to find some of the references but they were so seamlessly placed throughout that I can completely understand how I missed them.

I loved how in this small town, Jax was known for being a sort of trouble maker bad boy but no one really knew just how far his depravity extended. One robbery, something he normally doesn't do, changes something in him when he encounters Suzy. Suzy, having been sold into servitude, it just trying to survive her currently situation without adding to the scars she already carries around.

I loved that Jax had a moral code, which I know is something somewhat ridiculous to say in terms of someone who is a murder, but Jax is never one to do anything to hurt a woman or a child, no matter how badly they wrong him (and you get from the beginning that it has happened in the past). There is something about a man who would protect those two groups of people that makes him that much hotter, even if he is you know off killing men.

I also really enjoyed how these two were able to take their scars and work towards mending each other all while finding love in each other. Both have been severely damaged by their pasts and they both have qualities that bring out the best in each other- Suzy has a caring nature that isn't normally seen by most from Jax and Jax has this ability to show Suzy that she is stronger than she thinks she is and has more than enough courage to change the situation she has found herself in. Throw in the chemistry between these two as well as the fantastic plot that moves you seamlessly through this story and this is fire. I can't wait to get my hands on more from this author.

if you loved nightmare before Christmas this is the book for you!!!

I completely loved this book, it was one of those books that as soon as I started listening to it, I did not want to pause it. I did not want to do anything other than listen to this book James and Alyssa you two did such a phenomenal job narrating this book. There’s no way in my mind, I could see anybody else narrating this book. A quick overview our MMC in this book is Jax and our FMC is Suzy. Jack’s is in on an unaliver who unaliver’s people who do bad things and during his journey, he is forced to take on the job of a bank heist. While at the bank he meets Suzy and during their exchange, he learns that she is just as dark and depraved as he is, and along the way, they find each other so fascinating that they become completely and utterly obsessed with each other. And I completely love a book where our FMC is just as dark and depraved as our MMC I don’t think there’s anything better at times than when she can match his darkness. Understand that this is a dark romance, so please if you are going to think about listening and or reading this book to obviously check your trigger warnings. On the spicy scale I’d probably give this 🌶️🌶️🌶️ out of five! But when we get to the spicy scenes, they are spicy, very detailed and it is worth every second to sit there and listen and/or read! Again, thank you to blue nose thank you to James and Alyssa for narrating this book and most of all thank you Billie Jade Kermack for writing this amazing book

Jax sexy as all get out psycho who walks with one foot in the good, two fee in the bad more bad than good but always a reason for his darkness, righting the wrongs done to some, taking out some of the horrible trash, and has no goodness in him or so he thinks until he lays eyes on his very own angel. Suzy hasn’t had an easy life, her mother before her had it bad but she found strength in her pain after being sold to an extremely cruel man who did unspeakable things, allowed others to do unspeakable things to her ye she still fights which has me cheering her own and when she meets the other half of her well it is like fireworks going off. Both Jax and Suzy is dark due to no fault of their own but at the hands of other’s yet they connected like two puzzle pieces boy look out when they come together because justice is about to be served in the best way just as they dished it out onto others but will the man who feels like he owns her let her have her freedom without a fight, if he does fight who comes out on top so to speak, will those who hurt others get what they deserve, and will these two lovies find the peace they so desire giving up on handing out their kind of justice (let’s hope not)?

Inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas
READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS

ALC Audiobook Review

Deadly Nightshade is a spin on a favorite movie of mine. It’s inspired by the characters of The Nightmare Before Christmas and I couldn’t wait to hear this audiobook. Told in duet style, with voice actors Alyssa Avery and James Joseph as Suzy and Jax, who were pure perfection. Alyssa is a new to me voice actor, but I enjoyed her elegant, soft voice. James, however, is not and as always, his British accent made it easy to get lost in Jax and Suzy’s crazy love story.

As mentioned before, read the trigger warnings because this is a dark romance. We all know the story, so I won’t go into full detail but there is SO MUCH going on in this one. From a bank heist to torture, from obsessive love to avenging murder, we get a little bit of everything. This book is spicy and not for the faint of heart. The way Jax immediately became obsessed with his Dolly was one of my favorite parts. They are two tortured souls who find each other and never let go. Jax truly is the golden retriever psycho and I found myself swept away in their love for each other. Deadly Nightshade isn’t your typical romance book but that’s what makes it even better. Getting lost in the madness is part of the charm.

If you love the Nightmare Before Christmas then you will love Deadly Nightshade. It is a darker version, but had some similarities to the story.

Suzy is possession of Doc in the town of Hollow Hills. She has seen and felt a lot of pain in her life. Treated as a pawn by men she has given up hope of a better life. That is until she meets Jax and hopes for something better with him.

Jax is a vigilante type individual. He is a dark vigilante, but even though he did some bad things, he did it for the right reasons in my opinion. When he sees Suzy it is insta love. He knows she will be his one day, he just has to play his cards properly to get things going his way. He has a way of manipulating people and events to turn the way he wants them to go.

These two were made for each other. They were both dark and morbid, bloodthirsty individuals. They have seen some dark and disturbing things and find the same soul in the other. The chemistry was off the charts from the first moment they saw each other. Both knew they had found their soulmate and hope for the future. They brought out the best parts in each other.
