Los Angeles in under siege. A vicious turf war has broken out between drug gangs for control of the latest designer drug, Tunnel. Only two people know that Tunnel is the route of transmission for a deadly virus - a virus which turns man into a vampire with a machine pistol.
Not at all what you expect - if you can find it at all, it's marketed as being in the vampire genre; and that's not entirely wrong. It's a really different take on vampires, having no connection at all to the traditions. This is more of a really bent take of a LETHAL WEAPON-styled cop procedural with that early 90's scare drama of rampaging gangs running amok, and all of the character cliches, but with vampires (kind of) added to the recipe. Very tasty, but not everyone may like the dish. Only published in the UK, so if you're interested, you really have to make an effort to find it.
Extremely gory for the 90's, it was the first thing that had shocked me when I read it as a young adult (I must have been 18 when I read it). But underneath is a great detective story intermixed with a gangland revenge techno thriller with a twist on vampirism and the AIDS epidemic that'll make your skin crawl. A great antihero is a watermark to the whole story and the jubilation of his revenge is what makes the slower moments of the book pass like a breeze. A solid recommendation, if you've got the stomach for it.
