"You can feel it in the silence--when you're loved, when you're home."
Welcome to Magnolia, Louisiana, a small town desperate for a fresh start after tragedy. Newcomer, April has made it her life’s work bringing old, abandoned properties back to beauty. It was a dream first instilled in her by her father after they lost their home in a hurricane. Since then, April has lost much more—both her parents and her hearing. April’s life has been quiet for far too long. The only comfort she finds is in her work. That is until she meets the farmer next door, Emmett Calhoun.
Emmett is driven by two things—responsibility to his family and a desire to never become his father. Reluctant to allow himself a taste of something new, Emmett avoids helping April with the renovation until he simply can’t. When he finally agrees to help, more than the historic inn gets a fresh start.
April hears Emmett, sees him, more than anyone else ever has. Emmett learns and loves April in a way no one else has ever been willing to. Together, they find the silence isn’t so quiet. Together, they tear down the walls guarding their hearts and open their minds to new possibilities for the future—to new dreams, to new love. And the town of Magnolia enters a new chapter of togetherness.

You Can Feel It in the Silence by Emily A. Myers 4/5⭐ 2/5🌶️
This book is different from what I’ve read before! The main character, April, lost her hearing in her 20s, and she struggles to connect with others. On top of that, she lost her mother when she was a child, leaving her father as her only source of support. Losing him left her feeling completely alone, but even after everything she’s been through, she stays strong. She keeps pushing forward, pursuing what she loves, and cherishing her father’s memory and her dreams.
Then we have Emmet, who has his own demons. His father is an alcoholic, and after one terrible incident, Emmet packs up and leaves town to escape the pain. Years later, he returns to help his mother and sister, putting his own dreams on hold. But everything changes when he meets April. She inspires him to start loving himself again and reminds him that he’s allowed to prioritize his own needs, too.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Emmet and April unfold—from strangers to friends, and eventually lovers. Emmet is so understanding and patient with April, and he cares about her feelings. He recognizes that she’s hesitant about their relationship, but he’s always there for her, proving his commitment. It’s heartwarming to see how April encourages him to express his feelings and reconnect with his family.
The way Emmet and April heal each other is beautiful. They gradually confront their pasts and begin to embrace love, and there’s a nice mix of mystery, suspense, and secrets that keeps you hooked throughout the story. I found myself eager to keep reading to uncover the truth. Overall, this was a delightful read filled with sweet, heartwarming moments!
There's multiple things that I hated about this book. I thought it'd get better, I was really intrested in reading a deaf FMC, because I know how much of a problem communication is with deaf people. But guess what? The whole world bends for FMC. Yet everybody is always crying. She doesn't even know sign language, it's not even mentioned once throughout the book. If anything, the communication is bizzare. She and MMC trace words on each other? Is that accurate? How can you guess words right? Every time? And for some reason they both have telepathic level of understanding. They all speak to each other through apps or notes. Has that never ONCE been an issue? The whole point of being DISabled is having issues with blending in soceity but everybody here seems to be doing random things just fine. The author clearly just romanticised deafness and muteness. I should've just DNFed when I saw the authors note of how she doesn't have any experience with deaf people. FMC is mute and uncomfortable with her voice, but when they do the deed and she makes sounds, MMC doesn't seem so interested. Why is nobody actually treating her like she's deaf and mute? Why is everything so normal when they all just met? Sigghhh. Everybody wants to assure FMC that she is normal, but ironically, MMC calls his father "having a disease" because he has an addiction. Can the author just choose if people with disabilities and mental illnesses are normal or not, please? The MMC was searching for her tampon wrappers in the bin because he likes the taste of blood. And then he went down on her during her period. I needed a whole another trigger warning for that. The characters are in their mid thirties yet think like teenagers, there's barely any depth. The FMC is a virgin and MMC is apparently in love with her but they're doing gymnastics for their first time. Be so fr with me rn. Also when she gives her virginity to him, her hymen pops and she feels it break? Is the author a virgin? Since when are we writing horrendous smut that's blatantly scientific lies? And He says he's going to pull out because they don't have condoms? Are we still pretending that method works? From the beginning to the end of the book, FMC is thinking about how much MMC is like her diseased father, and MMC is talking about how motherly she is and I just....Freud would've loved this book. Their daughter's name is Magnolia Bloom. The town's name. Yall so white ong. - ARC read.
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕
FMC - April: 4 🌟 MMC - Emmett: 4 🌟 SPICE: 🌶🌶🌶
LIKES: April and Emmmett make such a beautiful couple, a beautiful romance to immerse yourself into! Emmett is so patient, kind, and respectful, but then he surprised me with how dirty he can be! And with everything that April has experienced in her life, it's made her strong and wise, and very empathic to those around her. Their relationship is sweet, and with no third act breakup, I was able to just enjoy their budding romance and their HEA
DISLIKES: It's hard for me to explain exactly what it was about the communication in the book that bothered me, but the best way I can put it is that a lot of it felt too easy. There are a handful of emotional and traumatic memories and moments in this book, but the characters don't really hesitate to just spill their secrets or fully divulge their thoughts and feelings in her presence or directly to her. I can understand that she's the type of person that makes people feel at ease and feel comfortable enough to open up to her, but it just made some of the dialogue feel rushed or feel like storytime instead of a natural conversation
There was also one spicy scene that gave me the ick, but to each their own :p

I am very fond of small town romance and I just finished one that might finally make me start Gilmore Girls.
You Can Feel It in the Silence is a small town romance and the first standalone book in the Magnolia Blooms duet, where each book will follow the Calhoun siblings.
The story follows April Scott and Emmett Calhoun. April arrives in the small town of Magnolia, Lousiana, to renovate an old property and transform it into an inn. Emmett is the grumpy farmer next door, who winds up helping her with the renovations, and also being the first man to truly make her feel seen and wanted, and most importantly he doesn’t let the fact she is deaf stop him from wanting to get to know her.
I adored April and Emmett so much. I fell for them the moment he understands she’s deaf and writes down his introduction instead of walking away. April was so surprised and happy, it melted my heart. The fact that she can’t hear him doesn’t form any sort of barrier between the two. If anything, it tears down their walls and teaches them to communicate on a deeper level. Between their phones, notepads, letters and their own signs they create to communicate quickly, April and Emmett make every interaction count, and together they heal from their respective traumas. Their romance and healing journey warmed my heart. There were also moments of tension and action that had me on the edge of my seat!
Here are the tropes! 💕 deaf & virgin FMC 🌽 protective farmer next door MMC ❤️🩹 healing love story ❤️🔥 close proximity 🦮 grump turned golden retriever 💗 sweet and spicy 🏘️ small town romance
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Beautifully written, this story evokes all the feels and leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart. I look forward to reading more of Emily A. Myers' Magnolia Blooms Small Town Romance Series, which is a complete 180 from her Blood and Bourbon Mafia Series.
April Scott and Emmett Calhoun's story will have you needing some tissues—not the entire box—but it's best to have it handy just in case.
Their story touches on some sensitive subjects, so I highly recommend reading the last part of the blurb, where the author listed all the CW/TW.
TW: Attempted rape / sexual assault • Death of a parent (referenced, off-page) • Death of a lover (referenced, off-page) • Violence • Alcoholism (not MCs) • Domestic violence (referencing an encounter between parent and child) • PTSD • Car accidents
You can feel it in the silence unfolds as a gentle, slow-moving tale of healing set against the backdrop of Magnolia, a charming Southern town bearing the scars of its past. At its heart is April, a deaf and mute woman who channels her pain into restoring abandoned buildings—a place marked by its own lingering wounds from history. Her journey intertwines with that of Emmett, her neighbor, whose struggles with a difficult childhood and strained family ties shape his quiet determination to build a shared future with April. Together, they dream to breathe new life into an aging inn while seeking comfort and hope within their growing bond.
What stands out most in this story is the connection between April and Emmett. Their development is characterized by patience and mutual respect, which becomes even more heartfelt given the obstacles created by April’s communication barriers. Emmett’s thoughtful attention to her boundaries adds a layer of tenderness and depth to their connection, making the gradual and heartfelt evolution of their journey deeply touching.
Though rich in emotional depth, the narrative tends to stumble at certain points. A significant portion of the storytelling relies heavily on internal monologues, which frequently eclipse the character interactions where the real enchantment could thrive. Given the importance of non-verbal communication to the story's essence, this feels like a missed opportunity. Instead of vividly showcasing sign language or expressive gestures, much of the exchanges are confined to written notes, which come across as overly static and detached. This choice diminishes the emotional impact, particularly during moments meant to evoke intimacy or profound connection. There were times I yearned for communication conveyed through a shared glance or the quiet power of touch to bring those relationships to life more fully.
SPOILER. One moment that surprised me was an intimate scene between Emmett and April while she was on her period. I found it quite bold, but it didn’t sit well with me—it felt a bit strange to read about, and honestly, it took me out of the moment rather than adding to the emotional depth. END OF THE SPOILER.
This novel stands out for its thoughtful depiction of disability and its powerful exploration of resilience and recovery. Magnolia, the town, emerges as more than just a setting—it becomes a symbol of shared pain and buried truths, weaving the personal challenges faced by April and Emmett into the larger narrative of the community. Supporting characters, such as Emmett’s mother and April’s father, add depth and warmth to the story, creating layered relationships that ground the tale. However, some of the other characters feel less prominent, their presence dimmed by the inward-looking nature of the writing.
Ultimately, You can feel it in the silence is a tender exploration of love, loss, and healing—two kindred souls finding refuge in one another amidst their brokenness. While it brims with potential and heartfelt intent, certain creative choices introduce some detachment that prevents it from reaching its full emotional impact. A gentle and sweet read for sure, even if not entirely absorbing for me.
Thank you, Torch Lit Ink, for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
A quiet, heartfelt small-town romance with a beautifully unique heroine 💕
April, a deaf/mute and virgin heroine, travels through towns in Louisiana in a bus-turned-office for her construction business. When she lands in Magnolia to restore an historic mansion, she meets Emmett—an engineer who’s returned home after a family tragedy to help on the farm.
Their shared love for renovation sparks a deep connection. The author captures their chemistry without relying on heavy dialogue, using alternative communication methods that feel authentic and powerful. As they work together, their bond grows slowly but intensely, with just the right amount of spice.
I loved the peaceful small-town atmosphere, the hidden love story in the mansion, and how both characters confront their pasts. It’s a slow-burn romance full of emotional depth, healing, and quiet intensity.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for choosing me.
This book was stunning. It was so much more than I ever expected a small-town romance novel to ever be in the best way. I felt the love in every word, from beginning to end. Definitely check the trigger warnings beforehand, there's a few. Even with the rough moments, this book left me feeling light and full of hope. There was so much emotion from each of the characters, not just the main ones, but the side characters as well. Absolutely beautiful. This was my first book by Emily A. Myers and it definitely will not be my last. I'll be adding all of her books to my TBR immediately.
Emmett and April have both had to endure tragic events. They've each known grief and heartache. Somehow, together, they heal and grow and ultimately create a love story that will always burn bright. He's been carrying the weight of his father's actions on his shoulders while grieving the loss of him even while he is still alive- behind bars but so far away that he's been grieving him for years. She's been carrying the grief of losing her mother, her father, and her hearing for so long that she hadn't realized how isolated she'd become until she meets him. I loved the way they met. It was such a sweet way to begin their story. I loved their little notes and the way they opened up with one another. Watching them go from friends/colleagues to lovers was beautiful. I connected to both characters, and I saw myself in them both. Their journeys with grief reminded me of my own. The things they experienced both individually and together reminded me of my own life in some ways. This book healed parts of me that have long been wounded and guarded.
I'll carry this beautiful, heartwarming story with me always. ❤️
Was fortunate enough to receive an arc of this from torchlink and I devoured this book!! small town romance, deaf fmc, the sweetest mmc, and a great found family aspect.
this story was beautiful from beginning to end, ALSO NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP!!! OBSESSED!!! emmett and April's story was so heartwarming, their letters to each other on napkins to notepads, to full on letters was everything I didn't know I needed. sometimes a silent love isn't all that bad and this book just proves that.
'you can hear it in the silence' yeah yeah a Taylor Swift lyric but it's so fitting for this book. every small action Emmett does shows his care for April and watching them fall in love was perfect 🥺💕
april, our last lovely mmc, who was in a bad accident and lost her hearing, she was so use to being alone and ignored in every room, until Emmett. their first encounter made me tear up because it truly goes to show the smallest act of kindness can go such a long way and can mean the world to someone. Emmett's patience throughout the book made me wanna run into oncoming traffic because I just 😭😭 WHEN WILL IT BE MY TURN?! 🥺
this was the perfect small town read , from beginning to end. thank you Torchlight and Emily for the arc of this amazing book. ❤️
As a long-time Swiftie, I loved finding a romance book that channels the magic of "You Are In Love"!
YOU CAN FEEL IT IN THE SILENCE is a standalone small town romance following April and Emmett. She restores old, abandoned properties, and her work is her solace since losing her hearing. Emmett is the farmer next door who helps April renovate an historic inn, and perhaps this is the opportunity for both of them to explore a new start with a person that sees, hears and understands them like none other.
I especially adored the two main characters, April and Emmett. Because April is deaf, these two have their own little ways of communicating that go beyond words: letters, messages, gestures. It was all so incredibly sweet, touching and romantic. I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the town of Magnolia. I haven't watched Gilmore Girls, but this one will definitely feel familiar to those who did with its warmth and small town magic.
Here are some tropes: - deaf FMC - protective farmer next door MMC - small town setting - slow burn turned spicy - found family - close proximity
So many ups and downs in this book with some suspense sprinkled in as well. The audiobook narrators really brought this small town romance to life for me. Emily put together a great heart warming (sometimes wrenching) love story. The love the 2 main characters had for one another although the communication barrier was there was so sweet. There is some pretty decent spice in there as they learn how to navigate one another in all aspects. I really enjoyed listening to the book, even though it did make me blush and cry a few times LOL
Oh this book... This story was so sweet and romantic.
April and Emmet both have had complicated lives, with a lot of loss and trauma. The way they work through this together, discovering their love for eachother and finding their way to a happy life is absolutely heartwarming.
But "You Can Feel it in the Silence" isn't just heartwarming. It is also finding yourself in scary situations, solving mysteries and dealing with the dark stuff of life.
The spicy scenes were hot! Although one scene was a bit too much for my liking 😅
I had a really good time reading You Can Feel it in the Silence, thanks so much to Torchlitink and Emily Myers for sending me this ARC! All opinions are my own.
Receiving this arc was unexpected and mostly appreciated, i am in love with Emmett & April! I love that he's named his goats enie, meenie, miney, moe. It absolutely cracked me up! This book is giving me all the feels! It's an amazing story about grief, loss, and finding a love that helps you to rebuild yourself when you thought it couldn't or wouldn't happen.
it's got deaf/ virgin FMC & a very protective MMC - couldn't put it down! The spice in this book, oh boy, you won't be disappointed!! 🔥 You need this book on your tbr ready for July 1st!!
This ARC was provided by Torchlit Ink and my review is voluntary. That being said the more I read the less I liked this book. I would have given three stars but after having to read notes to each other between intimate moments and Aprils refusal to use her voice I felt this was a two star book at best. Then I read a scene about Emmet enjoying eating her out while on her period. That did it for me. Would not recommend

“You can feel it in the silence–when you’re home, when you’re loved.”
Welcome to Magnolia, Louisiana 🌾—a small town ready for healing, just like April and Emmett. She’s a resilient renovator with a quiet strength, he’s a guarded farmer with a soft heart, and together? They find that even silence can speak volumes.
April and Emmett’s story is one of tragedy but also healing and love.
April has lost a lot in her life. First her mother, then her father, and hearing. The day she lost her father was the day her world became silent and loneliness was her only companion. She embarked on a journey to fulfil her and her father’s dream. Renovate old, forgotten homes and make them new again. This new project brought her to Magnolia, LA. Where she was supposed to renovate an inn to bring healing to this town. And then leave. What she found was so much more.
Emmett was crumbling under the weight of guilt, and family duties and obligations. He loves his mother, sister and niece, that’s the only reason he decided to come back to the town he swore he would never return, but he was not happy, and every day he died a little more on the inside.
The moment they met, something inside them clicked and everything changed. It was beautiful to see how they were falling in love with one another. How they help each other heal from things either of them knew how to.
This story brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. And made my heart ache in the most amazing way. It broke it 💖 and put it back together.
This is the first part of a duet but can be perfectly read as a standalone; I can’t wait to read the next part :)
I highly recommend this book. I know you will have no other choice than to fall in love with the main characters. 🥹
If you’re looking for a heartfelt and easily relatable must read story of healing from past traumas and the understanding of patience and compassion while grieving, this is it for you!
April, no stranger to loss, from the passing of her parents to the loss of her hearing, finds the courage to pursue her dreams with her business Purple Bus Construction. After receiving an anonymous letter for a Reno on a forgotten house , she accepts a job in the small town of Magnolia. While trying to settle into her new setting, along came Mr Grumpypants and the rest is history! 😍
Emmett is a man who thought running from his family problems would help only to realize it only became worse once he left. He stepped back into his home town of Magnolia to help his mom and sister. The town wasn’t as small as he remembered, it became a tourist attraction and crime was rising. After meeting April at the local Diner and having a full conversation on what seemed like 1000 napkins, he soon realizes that he’s falling for her. He is comforting, supportive and thoughtful showing patience and compassion towards April with her hearing loss and it helped him, start understanding how he’s been dealing with his own grief.
His unwavering patience and care for her roped me into their love story! Their connection on an emotional level before anything physical was refreshing.
And let me tell you, The love this man had for her! 🥹 I’ll leave you with a quote from the book that will forever hold my heart.
“If we don’t find beauty amongst tragedy, there is only sadness”
This was my first Emily A Myers novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style.. I can’t wait to be able to enjoy another one of her books and I’ve added a couple already to my TBR!
Thank you so much for the ARC! 🤗😘 @emilymyersauthor
"I am going to spend every day loving you. And after I draw my last breath, I will linger. I will linger in the void until you’re ready to continue the rest of our journey together. I won’t rush you—not then and not now...I’m not going anywhere. Ours is a story—a love—that will never end.”
"The one silver lining is tragedy doesn’t dictate what or who you become."
It's been my honor and privilege to have read and reviewed all of the prolifically brilliant novels from unstoppable author Emily A. Myers. Her ability to write beautiful stories that touch your heart while increasing your pulse with tension filled drama and consequences is phenomenal.
April's a uniquely special survivor. She lost her father in a tragic car accident that took her hearing. It left her in a silent world and she hasn't spoken a word since. But she's kept her Dad's dream alive and travels in her purple bus renovating homes. Little does she know that the Inn she's renovating in small-town Magnolia will change everything.
Emmett, or as April refers to him, Mr. Grumpypuss, is a man living with hurt since the night his alcoholic father hit him and his mother stayed married to him. Then he meets April and her quiet strength makes him hurt less. He's also in awe of her sexual awakening and her trust in him.
The Inn is its own character, holding in its walls a secret story of forbidden love with a tragic end. But as April and Emmett quietly fall in love repairing the Inn, the secrets there refuse to be silenced any longer; and small town Magnolia will be forced to hear the truth.
Through it all we get to enjoy the best 4 baby goats, Eenie, Meenie, Miney Moe, gossip at Luke's Diner, (a nod to Gilmore Girls' Luke's Diner) and go to the Fair. I loudly proclaim that You Can Feel It In The Silence when love blooms in Magnolia.
Okay, so I may be a bit biased because this book is based off Emily’s hometown that just happens to be my mom’s hometown where we have a family farm. I actually laughed to myself reading about April coming into town and going around the first two sharp turns because I have driven that same way too many times to count. Anyways, on to the actual review…
As a fellow Swiftie, I love the title. This book has nothing to do with Taylor Swift, but it’s a fun nod. To be honest, I don’t really love romance books. I bought this one to read a story from “Magnolia” as I am often missing Louisiana. It was comforting and warm. I so enjoyed the two person POV and getting the thoughts of both our main characters. Emily was able to carry the story along and switch POVs at the perfect time to keep drawing you into the story. I do not have the same traumas as these characters, but I understand trauma all too well and found Emily’s words through her characters to be refreshing. It shows true human growth and made these characters feel real. It is not a spoiler to say April is deaf because it is the first thing you find out and I loved that despite her challenges, she finds exactly what she’s been needing in Magnolia. Emmett is a wonderful character. He’s not “perfect” in a way men can be written in books. He’s relatable and fights his demons to be the best version of himself.
I didn’t give it a full 5 stars because I would have loved the conflict in the end to be explored more and discussed. Without giving anything away, a main life changing situation happens at the end of this book and it felt like the aftermath was not really addressed. That’s really my only criticism of the book. Do not mishear what I am saying, I LOVED this book. It made me smile often and brings a brightness to love. I cannot wait to read the next in the series this fall!
“April Scott deserves to be loved. She deserves kindness, companionship, and romance. She deserves to feel at home, protected, and grounded. I want to give her all those things. I want to give her everything.”
From the very start, this story pulled me in and warmed my heart. Because the FMC is deaf & mute, the story is not carried by the dialogue. It’s carried by the chemistry & tension that you can feel between the characters, as well as by their inner monologues. The author beautifully depicted the many ways that there are to non-verbally communicate. Love isn’t always shown through words. It’s shown through little touches, short glances, acts of service.
“There you go, baby. You don’t have to live in the shadows anymore. You don’t have to exist in silence. You’re the brightest star in this Magnolia sky. You’re the brightest light in my life.”
April and Emmett stole my heart. April’s life has been full of loss, but she remains to continue living the dream that she & her father created for themselves. Emmett hasn’t felt at home in his hometown in years because of his past trauma and the many secrets that his town keeps hidden. They are drawn to each other from the very start. I loved that Emmett never treated April with kid gloves due to the loss of her hearing and instead found other ways to communicate with her. Their love story unfolded slowly, and I think it was done perfectly. They each had to heal from their past hurts before they could love each other. Once they were ready to love, nothing could keep them apart.
“Words mean nothing. They’re just sweet melodies while actions are the loudest language. Her heart will tell her everything she needs to know.”
Emily A. Myers blended together so many different elements and crafted a love story for the ages. It’s soft & quiet, yet all consuming. If you like romances reminiscent of The Notebook, look no further.
“You can feel it in the silences - when you’re loved, when you’re home. Tell me, Emmett. Are you my home? Are you my safe place? Are you the one my heart has longed for - the one every crooked road and twist of fate has led me to?”
Tropes - 🩷 deaf/mute FMC 🩷 Virgin FMC 🩷 small town 🩷 found-family 🩷 spicy
Quotes: " The power that tiny woman has over me is unholy. The things I want to do to her? Also unholy. But us together? I can’t think of anything more divinely ordained."
" I am going to spend every day loving you. And after I draw my last breath, I will linger. I will linger in the void until you’re ready to continue the rest of our journey together."
✨️Review✨️ Thanks so much to the author for sending me an eARC of this book. Overall I really enjoyed this book! We have our FMC, April, who is deaf/mute due to previous trauma who is visiting the small countey town of Magnolia for an old Inn renovation she gets a not so warm welcome from Emmett, our MMC, who is a handsome but troubled country boy. She doesnt recieve the warmest of welcomes to Magnolia but Emmett deciding to write her a note in a cafe changes all of this.
I loved their dynamic and how they helped each other heal. Although, I feel like it was a bit rushed in terms of the build up and then it felt as though their relationship switched to mostly physical towards the end which is a shame. However you can still feel the chemistry and love these two characters shared and I absolutely adored them!!
You can’t help but fall in love with the MCs of this book. It is written so beautifully. This book is fully of healing and some secrets are revealed. Both main characters have some trauma when it comes to their parents and past, but renovating this house together gave them some healing.
Aprils life has been full of loss, her parents and her hearing. But she has not let that hold her back from living her life. But she has held back when it comes to her love life, she wasn’t sure anyone could love her for who she is now. But she is strong, beautiful, talented, and so caring.
Emmett is a gentlemen and very respectful. He is so caring and thoughtful with April and had been since the very beginning. Right away he felt a connection with her and wanted to get to know her more, make her feel safe, make her feel wanted and cherished. But he never wanted to push her too fast or too far. He was also dealing with some demons with his father. He was angry with him and didn’t know how to forgive or move on from it.
This is a slow burn, but done so beautifully. The connection grew so organically and then it got spicy! These two were meant for one another. Their souls needed each other.
April's life is devoted to restoring old and neglected buildings. She is new to the town of Magnolia, Louisiana, and is tasked with renovating an abandoned home into an Inn. She became passionate about her work when her childhood home was lost to a hurricane. Since then, April has lost both of her parents as well as her hearing. Her life has been too quiet for too long, and thr only comfort she finds is in her job.
Emmett's life revolves around two things: a responsibility to his family and never becoming like his father. Emmett doesn't embrace change, and is reluctant to help April, his new neighbor. When he finally agrees to pitch in, Emmett realizes a new start for himself may be in order.
April understands Emmett more than anyone else ever has, and in turn, Emmett grows to love April in ways nobody else has been willing to. Together, they find ways to break down the walls around their hearts and open their minds to new opportunities. They dare to dream, to love, to help a town start a new chapter.
I fell in love with Emmett and April. The way these two characters grow and learn together and develop a genuine connection was beautiful to read. I will be thinking about this small town romance for a long time.
This is the first book I’ve read by Myers and I can’t wait to read more. I fell absolutely in love with Magnolia and all the characters. Both April and Emmett have a tragic past for very different reasons. But the reason “or letter” that brought these two together has a tragedy of their own. April lost her mother at a young age, being raised by her father and learning construction. They had plans until a storm left April deaf/mute and without her father. So when she receives a submission to fix up a mansion in Magnolia, in rolls The Purple Bus. But Magnolia had secrets of its own and danger lurking in the shadows. Emmett returns to Magnolia after leaving for 10 years when his father got put away for a drunken accident that killed 3. But his mom, sister and niece needed him. Emmett never saw April being deaf as a disability. This was beautiful. They both found a way to communicate together. He starts helping her to renovate and feelings start to develop. But danger is t far away. Full of found family, live, communication, danger, mystery, angst, suspense and spice. I can’t wait for Emerson’s story!!
Wow! This book hits home for me! I can relate to April in every way! I was born with severe profound hearing loss in both ears & I wear hearing aids. Without them it’s hard to hear much. I am a pro lip reader as well.. April is my favorite main character. She is Deaf & has her guard up. But slowly lets it down. Her character had me in all my feels. I truly know how it is to be April. I know how it is to feel guarded, misunderstood and be afraid of rejection. She’s been thru a lot in life. You can truly feel alone at times with not being able to hear or communicate properly. It’s hard to find someone to truly understand you. But April is an amazing character, inside and out. She’s one of a kind in my book!
This is a beautiful, heartwarming..small town romance and I was truly hooked! Such a beautiful journey for Emmett & April. They both have been thru so much in their lives. I LOVED how they found a beautiful way to communicate. I truly was in all my feels & emotional. So much growth between them & they grow together. I loved the 2 of them together! This story will hold a special place in my heart! Thank you Emily! This is a must read!
While this new series isn't quite as action-packed as Emily's Mafia series, this first book is so good! For being a small town romance, though, it still has quite a bit of action and even some violence. There's an element of mystery revolving around the inn that slowly unravels throughout the book while never giving too much away. Also, there's no 3rd act breakup, which is always a relief to us romance readers.
Emmett and April learn about themselves while getting to know each other. April is so ready for rejection and misunderstanding due to having lost her hearing that she is a bit guarded at first. She has lived with a lot of fear since losing her parents and her home. Emmett is trying to find a sense of being home after returning to help his mom and sister take care of the farm. He is on a journey that actually takes him diving into his parents' past and the town's past, not just the future. They grow but choose to trust one another with their pasts and grow together in Magnolia.
Such a beautiful heartfelt story. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Definitely one that pulls all the heartstrings.
April lost her hearing due to a bad accident and feels as though she gets lost in a crowd per se. Emmett has his own history of trauma. When April moves to Magnolia to restore property, she meets Emmett the handsome farmer next door. I loved their interaction and the way Emmett shows no hesitation in communicating with her. The notes that started on a napkin were the sweetest then how they progressed! How April was there to help Emmett heal from his trauma made me love their relationship even more. I loved the slow burn that went at a perfect pace that led to some moments getting down right spicy!
Emily’s writing was brilliant in this story. It captivated me and I didn’t want to put it down. I felt full on emotions for this book and the characters. It’s definitely one I will want a book trophy so I can go back and reread when I want. Will be keeping my eyes open for more reads by this author.
This was a very beautifully written story. Poetry without being poetry. I'm a person that thrives in just sitting with the people I care about in silence. I've never read a story where one of the main characters can't hear and doesn't communicate with sign language. It was very cool to see the ways Emmett communicated with April. I'm a sucker for correspondence so the letter and note writing was very cute.
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink and the author for the review copy
I really enjoyed this one! In the beginning Emily mentioned this small town was in part due to a town she grew up in and from her favorite made up town of star hallows. Well, I’m a HUGE Gilmore girls fan so I knew I was going to love this!
She definitely nailed that this sweet town of Magnolia definitely had star hallows vibes and the characters you are introduced to definitely reminded me of some from the show. I quickly became invested in the MMC and FMC storylines independently and together. They both were strong characters apart that had their own demons to work through and together they were so sweet. Their love story was sweet, slow burn at first but then got spicy and I was here for it!
This was a great first book in this series and I can’t wait to see where Emily takes this town! I highly recommend and will be back for me!

4.5/5 stars Review: The book consisted of one of the most beautiful love stories I've come across and reading about it felt like a warm, comforting hug on a bad day. April Scott & Emmett Calhoun's love wasn't about loud, fancy promises. Instead, it whispered, yet, spoke volumes to each other & was loud enough for them to create a brand new life together with and for each other. The characters felt so real & raw- each of them having their own issues to overcome and courageous enough to seek and receive help from the people around them. Adding to these, the town, its people and their stories were incredibly marvelous to read about- some broken, sad yet made space for growth and love to bloom and boy it did bloom- not only in them but also in the hearts of readers. I truly vouch for this book :)
Emmett and April .... what an amazing story. These characters were so raw and real which made them very reliable. The amount of trauma and pain and grief that these two were dealing with made them who they are.
It was amazing how each one of them was trying to resume their life to the best of their ability and with what they had to deal with. When you're in that situation, you feel like you have to be the one to do everything and that you can't rely on someone else. So when the two of them came together and met, the stage was set.
This is one of those feel good romances that will literally appeal to the masses. It makes you believe in "hope".
