Remzi Gökdağ is an Istanbul-born journalist, author, and documentary photographer. His work explores cities, memory, history, and the lives unfolding behind their visible surfaces.
Born in 1968, Gökdağ studied journalism at Istanbul University and began his career as a reporter for Cumhuriyet in 1989. Much of his early reporting focused on Istanbul: its changing urban landscape, its people, and the tensions between development and everyday life. His coverage of major urban controversies, including the Park Hotel project, received journalism awards in the early 1990s.
His career later took him beyond Turkey. He worked as a Moscow correspondent for Kanal D and Radikal, reported for Cumhuriyet from Los Angeles, and became editor-in-chief of California Turkish Times in 2005. He later continued his journalistic work from Zurich and Dubai.
The same curiosity runs through his books. Drawing on reporting, travel, observation, and archival research, he writes about the ways cities change and the traces people leave behind. His books include Park Otel Olayı (1992), Amerikan Medyasında 11 Eylül (2001), Sevgili İstanbul (2015), and Başka Şehirler (2019). English editions of Sevgili İstanbul and Başka Şehirler were published in 2025 under the titles Dear Istanbul and Following Footsteps.
