Είναι δύσκολο να είσαι γάτα! Πόσο μάλλον όταν έχεις να κάνεις με ανθρώπους, που είναι από τη φύση τους ασταθείς και παράλογοι. Μια μέρα που ο Ρίχαρντ προσπαθεί, για μία ακόμη φορά, να βάλει τέλος στη ζωή του, γνωρίζει απροσδόκητα τον Φράνκι και η ζωή του αρχίζει να αλλάζει. Για κάποιον μυστήριο λόγο, ο Φράνκι επιλέγει τον Ρίχαρντ για να γίνει ο άνθρωπός του· ενδεχομένως επειδή θα του εξασφαλίσει ένα μαλακό κρεβάτι, άφθονη γατοτροφή και μια τεράστια τηλεόραση. Ή μήπως η φιλία τους γεννιέται από την ανάγκη και των δύο να αποκτήσουν έναν πραγματικό φίλο;
Με τρυφερή ειρωνεία, ο Γιόχεν Γκουτς και ο Μαξίμ Λέο γράφουν τη συγκινητική αλλά και ξεκαρδιστική ιστορία μιας αναπάντεχης κι ασυνήθιστης φιλίας: εκείνης μεταξύ ενός γάτου σε αναζήτηση στέγης κι ενός ανθρώπου που ξαναβρίσκει τη θέλησή του για ζωή.

I laughed and then I cried, loved it

Richard Gold will sterben und versucht sich in seinem Haus zu erhängen. Plötzlich sieht er vor dem Fenster einen Kater sitzen - Frankie. Der Mann fühlt sich gestört und probiert alles, um den Kater loszuwerden. Er schmeißt Frankie Sachen hinterher und trifft ihn am Kopf. Voller Schuldgefühle nimmt Richard Gold Frankie auf und stellt später fest, dass der Kater sprechen kann.

Das Buch sticht definitiv dank dem schön illustrierten Cover aus der Masse heraus. Allerdings wurde ich persönlich von Seite zu Seite enttäuscht.

Die Leserschaft erlebt auf ca. 187 Seiten eine Geschichte zwischen einem depressiven Mann und dem sprechenden Kater Frankie, der aus seiner Perspektive erzählt. Das Geschriebene liest sich schnell weg, denn die Sprache ist leicht und flüssig. Ich persönlich habe den Stil auch als altbacken empfunden - Geschmackssache. Die gesamte Geschichte ist in meinen Augen eher oberflächlich. Frankie kann sprechen, sieht gern im Fernsehen den Kanal National Geographic und hat seine Sicht auf die Dinge des Lebens. Eigentlich eine interessante Grundidee, um zu zeigen, wie das Leben aus der Sicht eines Katers gegenüber einem Menschen sein kann, der an einer Depression erkrankt ist. Allerdings wurde für mich persönlich das Gesamtkonzept zu schwach umgesetzt. Vielleicht hätten dem Buch ein paar Seiten mit mehr Tiefgang gut getan?! Schade, aber so sind die Lesegeschmäcker zum Glück unterschiedlich.

Das Buch wird seine Leserschaft finden. Für mich persönlich war es keine Bereicherung.

My gods, rip my heart out, why dont'cha???


I found this books some time ago while perusing a bookstore. Yes, the cover is what drew me. The blurb didn't tell me much so I read the first two pages and it was as if I had found a cat and it climbed up my legs and back to sit on my shoulder refusing to come down. Now, I finally managed to read it.

Frankie is a cat living in a village somewhere in Germany. One day, he comes across a small house with a man inside who "plays with a thick piece of yarn". Originally, the man - upon seeing and hearing Frankie trying to get his attention - wants to get rid of the cat but as these things go, Frankie moves in.
Together they explore the neighborhood, life, and quite a few heartbreaking moments of (self-)discovery.
Frankie is accompanied by two animal friends as well, there are matters of the heart (sort of), a stint in "Hollywood", lots of food ... and tragedy.

I knew this book would be tackling at least one big topic: suicide. But I wasn't prepared for just how wonderfully it did that and how much I would come to see Frankie and Gold (the human) to be THE dream-team. I was rooting for them so fucking much!

Amazingly, wonderfully, the authors managed to combine the gravitas of the situation with a lot of very appropriately placed situational comedy and a healthy portion of humour thanks to the cat's outlook on humans, life and everything in between. Which means that EVERY PAGE of this book made me laugh, except 3 - and those were the ones ripping out my heart strings (in the best of ways).

I feel raw and hung over and NOT OK but seriously: READ THE BOOK (even if you have to learn German to do so, it's totally worth it)!

Fantastische kleine Geschichte. Urkomisch und sehr traurig, ich hab viel gelacht und herzhaft geweint. Einerseits liegt in der Wahrnehmung des Katers Frankie die Erkenntnis, dass die Welt eigentlich eine ganze einfache ist und wir Menschen sie erst überkomplex machen. Wir sollten kleine Momente genießen, das Buch ist ein hervorragendes Plädoyer gegen Overthinking. Andererseits liegt zwar in der gewählten Darstellung der Thematiken Depression und Suizidversuch Hoffnung und auch Wärme, aber sie werden natürlich auch grob, manchmal geradezu emphatielos vereinfacht.
Der bewusste Einsatz umgangssprachlicher, konzeptionell mündlicher Sprache unterstützt das Konzept hervorragend und macht die Erzählstimme humorvoll, witzig und unterhaltsam. Ich hab den Roman gerne gelesen und war oft berührt von der Geschichte. Was will man mehr?

Me ha parecido una novela muy original y entrañable, de esas que te calientan el corazón.
Es un librito corto que se lee en un suspiro y que invita a reflexionar sobre varios temas, especialmente la amistad.
Te gusten o no los gatos, creo que merece la pena darle una oportunidad.

Conmovedora novela narrada desde la perspectiva de Frankie, un gato callejero que se cruza con Richard Gold, un hombre solitario y depresivo.
La intrusión de Frankie trastoca los planes de Gold iniciando una relación que transforma sus vidas. La novela explora temas como la amistad, el sentido de la vida y la sanación emocional abordados con un equilibrio entre humor y sensibilidad.
Destacaría la narración que tiene la novela con Frankie en primera persona y en cómo observa a los humanos con una mezcla de desconcierto y ternura aportando una mirada muy divertida sobre las relaciones humanas y la resiliencia.
Personalmente me parece increíble el mensaje que lanza la novela del poder transformador que tiene la compañía y la conexión entre humano-animal 😻.

Me encantan los animales, aunque tengo que admitir que nunca he sido muy cercano a los gatos. Hasta que conocí a Frankie y robo mi corazón.

Frankie es un gatito callejero que vive en un cerro de basura, pero un día elegirá a un humano para vivir con él. El suertudo hombre, Richard Gold, tiene una cama blanda y un gran televisor (quien puede rechazar eso ¿no?) pero no pasa por su mejor momento. Está psicológicamente dañado y aislado del mundo. Todo eso tendrá que cambiar ya que Frankie sabe hablar y no tendrá filtros para decir toooodo lo que piensa y obviamente exigir lo que necesita.

Es así como comienza esta hermosa novela. Una historia que disfruté en todo momento gracias a este gatito que tiene una personalidad única. Pese a ser muy inocente, tiene una excelente capacidad de observación sobre lo que hacemos (y dejamos de hacer) los humanos. Sus asertivos comentarios y las largas conversaciones con los distintos personajes me hicieron reír en más de una ocasión. También reflexionar sobre temas importantes de nuestras vidas, que muchas veces dejamos de hacer sin darnos cuenta o que no queremos enfrentar. Además, me sorprendí con otros temas totalmente inesperados ¿Ustedes sabían que las urracas son buenas para insultar? Claro, como no hablamos su idioma no nos damos cuenta. Pero si lo dice Frankie, le creo.

Hay libros que llegan es el momento preciso. Buscaba algo original, divertido y cumplió con eso y más. Me dejo muchas cosas para meditar y un personaje inolvidable.

Ein Roman, der mir mein Leben aufhellen sollte (meinte die Freundin, die es schenkte). Aus der Sicht eines Katers erzählt in einer Umgangssprache, aber zu durchaus ernsten Themen, die mit Leichtigkeit verpackt wurden. Literarisch hochwertig ist darin überhaupt nichts, aber ich konnte den Spaß empfinden, den die beiden Autoren beim Schreiben gespürt haben müssen. So manche Sicht eines Katers auf menschliche Eigenschaften brachte mich zum Schmunzeln und das Thema Depression wurde zumindest nicht verharmlost oder veralbert. Man sollte sich aber auch keine Erkenntnisse zum Thema erwarten, es ist nicht mehr als Unterhaltungsliteratur, geeignet, in anstrengenden Zeiten gelesen zu werden.

Lo he leído en menos de 24h porque es un libro cortito, muy ligero y ameno.
Está contado desde la perspectiva de un gato y te hace reflexionar mucho sobre la manera que tenemos los humanos de ver la vida, en comparación a los animales (preocupaciones, enfoque de los problemas, etc)
Es divertido y tiene un mensaje guay :)

Iedereen zou een Frankie in zijn leven moeten hebben!

Wat was dit een prachtig en ontroerend verhaal.
Frankie die het mensenleven maar ingewikkeld vind..
“Jullie mensen denken teveel en slapen te weinig en ik doe juist het omgekeerde”.

Frankie red Richard van het benemen van zijn eigen leven. En ondanks dat Richard helemaal niet zit te wachten op een kat in huis, worden Frankie en hij dikke vrienden.

Naast dat Frankie het leven red van Richard geeft Frankie ook mooie levenslessen mee in dit boek!
Vaak geen ongekende levenslessen maar wel de levenslessen waar je zo nu en dan even aan herinnerd mag worden ❤️

Frankie es un gato irreverente que habla, comprende el idioma hombruno (el de los humanos) pero hay muchas cosas que no entiende de las personas, también habla otros idiomas animalisticos, por lo que sabe que algunos son crueles con sus comentarios y otros unos sabios. El encuentro fortuito de Frankie (el gato) y Gold (un hombre), hará de esta historia una inteligente y entretenida novela pero tambien toca temas sensibles que no dejarán indiferente a nadie.
Aunque de principio me hizo recordar dos libros que ya leí, uno es de mis favorito y el otro lo leí este mes, me parece que igual es algo fresco en cuanto a la narrativa del gato, sus ideas y frases.
Asi que lo recomiendo pero con TW.

Jeśli ktoś powiedziałby mi jakiś czas temu, że książka napisana z perspektywy kota stanie się dla mnie tak ważna, nie uwierzyłabym.

Jest to książka o przyjaźni między kotem- Frankiem i mężczyzną pogrążonym w żałobie po swojej zmarłej żonie.

Kiedy tych dwoje się odnajduje, nie tylko nawiązuje się między nimi nić porozumienia, ale stają się wzajemnie-jak sami mówią- swoim „sensem życia”, wiele się od siebie ucząc.

Jest to powieść, która zmienia perspektywę i która zwraca uwagę na problemy ludzkiego świata. Frankie próbuje zrozumieć dlaczego ludzie tak bardzo komplikują sobie życie. Przedstawia nam swój sposób patrzenia na świat- prosty, ale niepozbawiony przemyśleń i refleksji.

Dlaczego ludzie, którzy stworzyli tyle wspaniałych rzeczy i potrafią tyle zrobić, dalej są nieszczęśliwi?

Może to kwestia tego, że za mało śpią i za dużo myślą?

To niedługa historia, która niezmiernie mnie wzruszyła i chwyciła za serce. Jest wartościowa, uczy empatii i zostawia po sobie refleksje, że może warto czasem na moment się zatrzymać i spojrzeć na życie, tak jak patrzy na nie kot?

An unusual and charming little story about Frankie, a laid-back but cheeky cat who one day meets Richard Gold, a man who wants to end his life. I really enjoyed this novel because it's light and easy-going, even though it deals with heavy themes such as depression and suicide. As it is written from the point of view of a cat, the human problems are presented in a simplified way, which adds a sweet touch. Despite this trivialisation of Frankie, there are always some beautiful life lessons that pop up here and there and are thought-provoking. It draws attention to the fact that we can also recognise small things, which we initially see as insignificant, as the meaning of life. Together with a lot of humour, which often made me laugh out loud, I thought this novel was really well done.^^

Heel erg genoten van dit verhaal! We volgen in dit boek Frankie, een kat die intrekt bij meneer Gold. Gold wil een einde aan zijn leven maken, maar ziet dan Frankie plotseling in zijn tuin zitten. Er vormt een vriendschap op het moment dat Gold dat misschien wel het hardste nodig heeft.

Het boekje is vrij dun en de schrijfstijl lekker vlot, dus je leest het zo weg. Ik ben geëmotioneerd geraakt op een aantal momenten, maar door de humor blijft het boek luchtig. Ook zit het vol met een aantal mooie levenslessen. Echt een aanrader! Zeker als je een kattenmens bent ;)

For centuries, cats have been worshipped and believed to exist on both an intellectual and spiritual plane; understanding more about humans and life than we realize. With this and their healing powers like that of their purrs and therapeutic effects; cats can literally ‘save’ lives. If only we could have insight into the mind/thoughts of felines from their perspective in these matters. Well, we can at least with one specific tom cat in the much beloved, “Frankie”, by J.M. Gutsch and Maxim Leo; now translated into English.

“Frankie” is a charming novella drawn from the perspective of Frankie (named after Frank Sinatra), a tom cat living on the streets who stumbles upon a man (Gold) attempting to commit suicide in an old, run-down house in the woods. Frankie’s curiosity connects the two and of course he ‘saves’ Gold from self-harm and has his own coming-of-age journey, simultaneously. “Frankie” also throws into the mix a cast of standout characters both animal and human adding depth to the story.

Even though “Frankie” could run the risk of being described as ‘cheesy’ and insensitive attempting to cover a subject matter that is obviously nuanced being told from the narrative angle of a cat; Gutsch and Leo rather seamlessly, organically and beautifully broach this plot with a ratio of whimsy and psychology/philosophy that stands with the best stream of consciousness literature. This approach makes “Frankie” relatable to all readers and allows the heavy content to move with finesse with the small doses of comedy. Readers will laugh, be provoked into thought and experience an array of emotive reactions.

The coupledom of Frankie and Gold is beyond-perfection with its chemistry and instant love that flows from the pages resulting in readers to ‘feel’ and ‘live’ alongside the characters even going as far as feeling like they are within the story. This is pure magic from Gutsch and Leo giving “Frankie” a dreamy energy that values and explores life from the mind of a cat but also while resonating with readers. There is more to “Frankie” than just a story – it is a journey that touches the heart-strings and minds of readers.

Admittedly “Frankie” has its ‘cute’ moments but the novella is not child-like in its writing style nor is it overly predictable although cat-lovers and owners can definitely foreshadow Frankie’s cat behaviors. The story is gripping despite being easily-read and certainly not for children despite being narrated by a feline.

“Frankie” concludes in an unexpected way (won’t disclose in order to not spoil the ending) that is touching, memorable and brilliant from Gutsch and Leo; perfectly encompassing the subtleties of both cats and humans. “Frankie” holds quite a special essence that is not often manipulated with success making the novella truly stand-out.

“Frankie” is a fantastic, quick novella that tackles the subject of suicide and grief with sensitivity and understanding while carried with situational comedy to lighten the load. Gutsch and Leo offer a piece that is to be cherished and is recommended for all cat-lovers, fans of stream of consciousness type literature, readers of the Japanese Cat Lit genre (“Frankie” is not Japanese but could blend into these book shelves with ease) and those struggling with their own mental health.

Das Leben und die Liebe sind schon schwer genug. Und dann hat man mal ‘n guten Plan und 'n bisschen Hoffnung, und dann kommen die Menschen mit ihrem Realismus um die Ecke und machen alles wieder kaputt. Ich glaub, die Welt wäre schöner ohne den ganzen Realismus.

Ich lachte, dann weinte ich - so lässt es sich eigentlich gut zusammenfassen. Ein wenig mehr habe ich mir erhofft, aber was mir tatsächlich fehlte, kann ich nicht ganz sagen. Die Erzählweise von Frankie war lustig und erfrischend, zwischendrin muss man ein bisschen innehalten, dass die Nachdenk-Momente nicht zu kurz kommen. Dennoch fiebert man mit und hofft, dass die stets unterschwellige Schwere ein gutes Ende findet.

I finished it in one day and all I have to say is that I really enjoyed this book. It kind of remind me of Little Prince; simple plot, simple characters yet it make you think about it right after you read it and later on. That's all good night/ good day ☺

I laughed too hard reading this book. I read it out loud for my boyfriend. While i represented the characters' voices mimicking their emotions. So yes, it was a funny ride. I had a lot of fun with this book. And it's a 5 stars because the story was fenomenal .
