The sensation you get when looking someone in the eye and realizing what's looking back at you isn't quite human …
A man takes in a girl orphaned after he devours her mother, and she'll never let him forget it; a jogger feels something stalking her through her route; after being bitten by a horse, a young man goes to the emergency room; a Lycan Plague runs rampant throughout a kingdom; young blind girl receives the most interesting of service dogs; and a wife creates a circle of salt to trap her husband during one of his … episodes.
Within these twenty-two stories, you'll find unique points of view and new spins on shapeshifters, from classic werewolves to mermaids to moths.
Featuring stories by Chase Anderson, Devan Barlow, Warren Benedetto, Octavia Cade, Carlos Alexandre Dias, Elana Gomel, Hannah Rebekah Graves, John D. Kuyat, Akis Linardos, S.H. Livernois, Aggie Novak, Mir Rainbird, Michael A Reed, Elysia Rourke, J.F. Sebastian, C. W. Stevenson, AM Sutter, Mark Towse, J. Weintraub, Scott A. Weisser, and Vincent H. West.
I just finished reading this collection of short, were-creature themed, stories. Without spoilers, there are pieces in Howl of the caliber you might expect from a literature or creative writing class. Stories come from award winning and best selling authors in the horror world, from various parts of the world. This was a treat and a delight to read. If you're looking for horror, from literary to sci-fi, to classic, look no further, there is a story in here for everyone.
After enjoying 'Bite' enormously, I dove straight into 'Howl' - and immediately knew that the quality was still everything I'd anticipated.
This isn't just werewolves. This is were-ANYTHING, and the questions it asks about the wild, animal sides of ourselves is a subtle but powerful thread through every tale.
Yes, we have wolves (and what it means to transform into a powerful canine, or be faced with one!), but also coyotes, moths and mysterious Other Creatures that almost defy description. Insects that take over bodies in a pandemic-like attack, entire communities that threaten their own children, and a VERY protective guide dog - almost every single one of these tales is a gem.
I've seen that Graveside are looking at Witches and Cryptids next, and I'm entirely here for whatever jewels they turn up! Also it's great to find new (and familiar) authors to keep an eye on.
Another definite recommend.
I was kindly sent an early copy of this book by the publisher, but the above opinions are entirely my own.
Some stories were more interesting than others for me. But that's what is meant to happen when you pick an anthology.
I quite like the diverse range of stories, authors, and shapeshifters. I don't want to play favorite because that would spoil the suspense and stories for other readers, but I could pick out a few favorites from the book. For a few of them, I would love a longer version. I truly think this book covers a wide range of "styles" and a lot of readers can identify with the characters.
I would recommend this book to any fan of Shapeshifters. If you never read a shapeshifting book before, you can start with this one, the good point with an anthology, you don't have to read in order. I would recommend reading the trigger warnings BEFORE you read any story, some are more gruesome than others.
I received a free copy of this book via Graveside Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was an interesting horror anthology, filled with different shapeshifter stories from different authors. Some of the shapeshifters were quite unusual and it was an entertaining read.
