A dark, erotic horror romance for fans of the sensual dread of Nosferatu, Victoria Holt and R Lee Smith.
Mandy's favourite hole-in-the-wall indie cinema, The Golden Cameo, is playing a very special show. The Cameo is putting on a late-night screening of Mandy's favourite horror trilogy on Halloween night, and Mandy's a bit of a horror junkie. The Shade, the masked murderer in the show, has always made her heart race ... in a very special way.
But tonight is Halloween. The veil between the realms is at its thinnest, and the lines between fact and fiction are blurry- especially when true believers are in the audience, gazing up at the screen with wide eyes and racing hearts. Especially believers like Mandy, who lick her lips and presses her thighs together when the Shade claims each new victim.
Tonight, the screen isn't the only thing being watched. The Shade is coming for you, Mandy..
Not for the faint of heart. Midnight Special is a dark erotic horror romance with explicit, triggering content. Please read the author note at the beginning of the book before reading. Content notes and tropes can be found at the end of the book to avoid spoilers.
The Midnight Special masterfully blurs the line between fantasy and reality. As with her other work, Elle Galea’s talent for world-building pulls you in, immersing you in a realm both seductive and terrifying.
Not for the faint of heart, this erotic horror is dark, vivid, and unapologetically spicy. Twisting through the depths of fear and desire, it will have your heart racing from start to finish.
I love it, it made her other works seem TAME.
Without any spoilers, my fav details and lines are: His insides become “outsides” “My own cries mock me” The head butt! Omg, when you get to it you’ll know what I mean, the description and scene to follow The flow and how it ramped up at the exact right pace The “I knew cosmic love”, chapter name, a subtle Taylor Swift reference detected perhaps?
I think she called this an Erotic Horror. Omg is it ever!
I went into Midnight Special blind since I’ve read her work before. I am so glad that all I knew was Erotic Horror from the intro. This was so wild and I could not put it down. Mandy and Shade are indescribable. Mandy finally finding what she was lacking. The burn the world vibes from Shade with zero remorse. I could not get enough. It was dark, twisted, and spicy. I really need so much more like this from Elle.
This is where I am going to say while I absolutely enjoyed this, it will not be for everyone. I strongly recommend checking the Trigger Warning before starting this gem.
Mandy, an author, has quite the imagination. She has been in love with The Shade movies since she was younger. She has fantasized about The Shade as if he were a real person coming to her. Her daydreams are very sexy. She gets a notification on her phone that a new Shade movie is coming, and she has to go. In the middle of the movie, people start screaming as a shadow comes into the theater with a blade through someone. It’s pretty gory. Instead of running for her life, she seems entranced. The Shade is here for her. The story is a dark erotic horror. Check the trigger warnings. I thought it was really good.
I want to start this review with a little warning; book will not be for everyone.
This is a dark and twisted erotic horror love story. Mandy (FMC) is a writer who feels like she’s missing something, Shade (MMC) is something more, something not of this world and he wants Mandy.
The world was neatly written, the plot was very interesting, and the few side characters we were introduced to were well written as well.
I would very much recommend this book if this genre is your type of thing, if it is not and you are thinking of dipping your toes into this genre, please read the triggers.
Just by reading the series name, Monsterotica, you’ll know what you’re getting into. This is a great read that’ll keep you hooked right from the very beginning with excellent imagery on every page. Definitely read the triggers before heading in as it is horror based and you’ll be able to picture every detail. I immensely enjoy reading books by Elle Galea and I can’t wait for the next one.
An unrelenting plunge into psychological horror and twisted romance.
The Midnight Special blurs the boundaries between reality and delusion, painting a world in visceral detail.
From the first page, it grips you and doesn’t let go, forcing you to question not only the characters but also your own instincts around lust, liberty, and whether love and obsession can be two sides of the same blade.
At its heart is Mandy, a woman teetering dangerously close to the edge, caught between her own values, forbidden desires, and the unnerving presence of an otherworldly being who seems to understand her more deeply than she understands herself.
Every moment feels like a moral crossroads, dragging the reader into the depths of her consciousness, where passion and dread intertwine in ways both intoxicating and unsettling.
Elle’s writing is raw and immersive, her imagery so vivid, so sensually disturbing, it lingers in your mind long after the final page
Blessed to receive as part of the ARC/street team. Midnight Special comes with a few warnings in the author note, with good reason. This book is a sensual combination of horror and dark romance (think of the monstrous erotic scenes in Nosferatu, bloody gore, and the toxic tension of a dark romance). There are some cosmic horror nudges too which I really appreciated. This author has a way of implying and hinting at themes without spelling it out plainly. Another dark winner from Elle.

I completely felt like I was submerged into a 90's slasher movie plus a twist of magic infused. It was great! I want to read this all over for the first time at least 10 times! I loved the intrigue of the book, but you'll have to read it for yourself to know exactly what I'm talking about.
Hello beauties! The title and cover has now synced to the final form for the published edition.
Midnight Special is an erotic horror- a horror romance with Nosferatu and hints of somewhat Lovecraftian vibes. The love interest is nowhere near human. It's gory and odd and there is no redeeming the Shade. Please be warned!
As with all my stories I don't spell things out plainly for you. I like to leave things to my reader's imaginations! Thank you my dark pretties. 🖤
