Tortured Hearts

The Breakdown

Rate this book
Luke Pierson has been handed his next America’s Sweetheart, pop star Calla James. Though she isn’t his first choice, he can’t exactly say no.

He’s expecting to follow her to dress fittings, red carpet events, and watch as she plays the perfect girlfriend to her Hollywood boyfriend. But what he doesn’t expect is to uncover the cracks beneath her flawless facade. Calla James isn’t just a star—she’s a woman on the verge of a breakdown, worn thin by the pressures of fame and a team that treats her like a commodity.

When Calla finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her while she’s on tour, she needs someone to lean on — someone who sees her, not her stardom. Luke becomes her unexpected refuge

Though he tries to keep their relationship strictly professional, the pull between them grows undeniable. As the days pass, Luke finds himself drawn to the woman behind the glittering persona—Calla, a woman who longs to be cherished, who dreams of real love, away from the spotlight.

When Calla finally takes a stand and decides to break free from the world that’s been suffocating her, Luke must will he stand by and let the forces around her tear them apart, or will he be the one to catch her as she finally dares to fall?

The Breakdown is book 2 in a series but is a complete standalone and is meant for ages 18+.

D.C. Kile knows how to write a romance!!

I loved the chemistry and tension in the first book of hers I read, The Penalty, and this book delivered as well!! She really knows how to make you crave for two people to get together.

I’m a sucker for a bodyguard romance! I love the forbidden romance aspect, and the whole tortured “I can’t have her”. Ugh, so good!! Luke is the classic alpha male. He is job focused and wants nothing to do with the pop star he’s supposed to be guarding. He’s not her friend, he’s not there to be nice, he has a job to do. *swoon* I loved seeing him fight against what he knows he should do and what he WANTS to do.

Calla was def sweet, but good lord soooooo weak lol. The only thing I didn’t like about this one was how badly she allowed people to push her around. At one point I was literally yelling “what are you doing? You don’t HAVE to!!” Ugh!! I mean I get it, she started at a young age and trusted people, but at the same time I didn’t get it at all lol !! I did LOVE when FINALLY she grew a backbone and stood up for herself.

The ending was oh so sweet! I loved the element of tension with the manager and the “getaway”!! It added a nice layer!

Yes ladies, there is a “mine” moment. And a nickname “princess” *swoon again* andddddd there’s a “f#%k it” moment too!! I’m sure that’s all I really needed to say about this book to convince you to read it hahaha

Book 2 in series, loved it! Can’t wait for the next one. D.C. Kile is def on my radar!!

⛓️ RELEASE DAY ARC REVIEW ⛓️

Thank you @sunnybabepr & @authordckile for my ARC copy of The Breakdown 🥹

@authordckile does it again! These books are so underrated and deserve so much hype! The writing is spectacular and the stories are the same. I felt so sad reading Calla’s story and I think it’s a really well written representation of what celebrities go through. Sometimes we forget that celebrities/writers etc are real people with real feelings and can experience real burnout. And LUKE oh sweet baby Luke. I love him and I love him for Calla. I won’t say too much more out of fear of spoiling the story, but just know this is a beautiful story to read.

Today is release day and inside you’ll find:

🎶celebrity x bodyguard
❤️‍🔥forced proximity
🎶workplace romance
❤️‍🔥forbidden
🎶healing from trauma
+ more.

Please read trigger warnings as there are sensitive topics discussed!

Slow burn and a quick reader for you, if you like bodyguard/protectee romances.

I honestly preferred the first one, which contained all my favourite tropes. This one fell quite flat and I did not connect with the characters even though they had a nice dynamic going on.

Thank you to the author and Sunny Babe PR for the arc. All opinions are my own.

Liked this book a lot. The tension and Chemistry the characters had was amazing. As much as I loved the characters and their connection and was just dying for them to get together I spent most of the book frustrated and wanting to shake the fmc.

Calla was a very likable character. I felt for her a lot. She was used to being used and never living her life for herself. That is until she met Luke. I wanted to shake her most of the book and scream to stop letting people walk all over her. It definitely took time for her to start loving herself again and wanting to break free but once she did it was amazing to watch. Seeing her standing up for herself and Luke had me wanting to cry cause her growth was phenomenal.

Luke tried so hard to fight his attraction to her 😭. It was cute seeing him struggle. He was one of the few people who saw Calla for who she actually was. He is everything you would want in a partner. He took care of her, made sure she was safe, made sure she ate enough and was a shoulder for her to cry on when she needed.

Them together were really cute. They got along amazingly. There was good chemistry in and out of the bedroom. Everything between them felt real and it made it super easy to root for them.

A lot of people pissed me off in this book and the only thing I'm mad about is that they didn't go to jail😭 There was a lot going on in this book that it kept me entertained from the beginning. I absolutely loved that ending and don't think I'll get over them anytime soon.

If you love broody bodyguards, pop stars with people-pleasing issues, and the kind of slow burn that makes you want to scream into a pillow, The Breakdown is calling your name.

Luke Pierson is all business. No smiles. No small talk. Definitely no falling for the woman he’s hired to protect. But Calla? She’s sweet, famous, constantly underestimated, and exactly the kind of trouble Luke can’t stay away from. The man tries so hard to resist her, it makes it that much better when he finally caves and hits us with a possessive “mine.” Swoon city.

Calla might start out letting everyone walk all over her, but once she finds her spine? It’s game over. Watching her stand up for herself and take back control of her life is one of the best parts of this book. That and the forbidden tension that practically crackles off the page every time she and Luke are in the same room.

There’s drama. There’s forced proximity. There’s a “princess” nickname that should not be as hot as it is. Also a bag of chips that somehow manages to steal the scene.

Did I hear bodyguard romance and put down the book I was reading to read this instead? Yes…
Was I disappointed? Absolutely not!
This is the second book I’ve read of D. C. Kile’s and I like her style. It’s simple to the point, but still conveys all of the tension and emotion.

And tension is right. I love Luke and Calla both so much and them trying to fight the inevitable is what made me eat this book up in one sitting.
And the weight of her fame - walking the tightrope of loving what you do, but not how it’s done - pulls at the readers heartstrings almost as much as Luke’s. You can’t help but want what’s best for her!

I had preconceived notions about how this story would turn out and boy was I wrong. I did not see that ending coming! What a rush!

Thank you go sunnybabePR and D.C. Kile for the arc!

I loved this book! Although it is the second in the series it can be read as a standalone!

This follows Calla through her pop star journey and Luke who is now her protective agent or bodyguard! This talks about the hardships that Calla was experiencing throughout her career. She felt alone and that no one actually cared or ever listened to her. That is until Luke Pierson shows up to take the place of her other bodyguard.

He helps make her realize that she is allowed to do things for herself and still be a person outside of being an artist. I was not a fan of Thompson at all in this book up until the last chapters where he finally realized Calla was struggling!!

I loved the romance that forced between Luke and Calla. It was absolutely so sweet! Loved the way this story wrapped up.

Breakdown by D.C. Kile is a powerful and emotionally charged read that takes you on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and undeniable chemistry. Centered around a pop-star breaking free from the expectations and limitations others have placed on her, this story beautifully captures the struggle of reclaiming your identity—and your heart.
With a steamy bodyguard x celebrity romance at its core, this book delivers on all fronts: tension, vulnerability, and just the right amount of spice. If you’re a fan of that trope, Breakdown will absolutely hit the spot. The dynamic between the main characters is both tender and electric, making it impossible to put down.
Huge thanks to SunnyBabePR for the ARC! Breakdown is available now everywhere books are sold and is also on Kindle Unlimited

Wow. I loved EVERY single moment of this book. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read this ARC. This book had me from the first page. This story was beautiful, heartwarming, heartbreaking and just all around really good. I loved watching Luke fall for Calla and vice versa. The author totally nailed all the feelings of watching what Britney Spears and others in the industry have gone through to fight for the right to live their own lives. The spice was on point, the chapter with the dressing room scene was 🤌🏽. I will be adding to cart, every single book by this author!

I didn't like any of the characters... other than the two main characters... and there was one who ended up redeeming himself!

But other than that, I just wanted to yell at all the characters!!😡

I loved this story, it reminded me a lot of Twisted games, but instead of being a princess, she's a pop star🤭

I loved the evolution of the relationship between the two main characters and I loved seeing Calla realize that the people around her were stupid and that she deserved better.

I swear, if I knew that my favorite artist was going through what Calla went through, I would be so sad😢

Loved it so so much. I mean, this book had everything and more. Calla was giving so much trouble while being famous that all she wanted was to have some time to be "normal." Luke didn't think that this new job that he was giving would be the one giving him the more headaches but also give him everything he needed in life. I was so excited to see what was coming for them that I would have never guessed what happened. But these two went through it all. But I loved it all.

The Breakdown is a sweet and empowering story about self-esteem, personal growth, and learning to stand up for yourself. It’s written in a breezy, fast-paced style that makes it a quick and enjoyable read.

Calla’s journey is incredibly touching. As a pop star — America’s sweetheart — she’s clearly burnt out and in desperate need of a break. Watching her start to reclaim her voice and set boundaries was powerful. She’s been through so much, and her growth is both emotional and inspiring. With Luke’s support, she begins to rebuild her self-worth and finally see herself through loving eyes. While most people around her ignore her needs or take advantage of her, Luke is the one person who truly, deeply cares.

And can we talk about Luke? The ultimate grumpy bodyguard. A workaholic with a heart of gold, fiercely loyal to those he loves. His protectiveness and quiet strength made him one of my favorite characters. What really stood out to me was his devotion — he’d do absolutely anything just to see Calla smile. That kind of loyalty? Heart-melting.

The slow-burn, forbidden romance between Luke and Calla was pure perfection. The tension? Delicious. Their chemistry? Off the charts. And the Taylor Swift vibes from Calla? I was living for it.
The ending was everything I hoped for — full of healing, peace, and the love these two so clearly deserved.

Thank you Sunny Babe PR and D.C. Kile for sending me this ARC. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity.

D.C Kile has done it again!! I always really enjoy reading her books and this is no different 😍

The Breakdown follows Calla, a famous pop star in need of a new bodyguard which is where our man Luke comes in and battle between attraction versus professionalism begins and it is so juicy! This couple was fire together and I ate it up!

This book also touches on some heavier themes such as work burnout and exploitation which was really interesting to read about. As someone who really loves music, especially K-Pop, it was such a realistic insight into how stars can be treated.

Tropes include;
- Pop star x bodyguard
- Forbidden romance
- Workplace Romance
- Forced Proximity

Thank you to SunnyBabePR for providing me with a review copy!

The couple is pretty likable, but it felt more surface level. An easy and predictable read so if you're OK with that and want a low stakes bodyguard romance, then this will satisfy. I would've like more meaty angst. I felt the fmc was a bit immature for 26.

Dialog was repetitive at times, ie "what is this woman doing to me" and the self correcting of "why can't I stop thinking and looking at him" and "its so unfair he's so attractive". There's nothing new here but it moves along well enough. But I couldn't really feel immersed in it since it felt like so many other OK bodyguard stories. Spice was tasteful. And its good that she did get more of a backbone later to stand up for herself.

liked the first one more because of the trope but anyways, i read it in one day, just like the other one. what i truly liked is that both of the characters evolved through the book and that it was benefic for both of them. the kinda secretive but passionate relationship drove me crazy and the way Luke was showing how jealous he was.... it was really my favorite part to be honest.
the fun sentence of this book is probably: "No. I love tits."

this book started off really optimistic… 🎤🍣🧙‍♀️

Luke is a formed military man who was discharged and when he didn’t know what to do was recruited to work for his friends private security company. His first few assignments had gone really well, until he was assigned to Calla James. He flew out to LA and for her whole tour would follow Calla around day and night to protect her from crazy fans or potential stalkers. Calla is America’s Sweetheart with a crazy schedule that keeps her going non stop. Her current security gaurd is having a baby, they have gotten along great so when she meets Luke she is immediately turned off. The first few days, he really keeps his distance. He doesn’t watch her rehearsal and make sure he is primarily hidden from view. When the tour starts everything is going fine, Luke ends up finding out that he might bot like her music but she puts on a great show. However, after the first show when she tries to escape to explore Vegas their relationship starts to change. Before the start of her third show she invites Luke inside and they start to mess around, byt they are interrupted. On the bus to the next few shows they start messing around, he is sleeping behind her and they are starting not to care if her team catches them. In chicago, he sleeps in the couch in her room, until her boyfriend shows up and she breaks up with him after confirming that he is cheating on her. Instead of going to find Luke she sneaks out getting a tattoo and dying her hair. Luke finds her the next morning and everyone flips out. Luke is almost fired, but Calla agrees to stay with Thompson to keep Luke as her bodyguard. When they get to New York Calla decides she os too tired and doesn’t want to do some of the things she is being forced to so they decide to go explore the city and end up back in his apartment. However, after the show their is a crazy fan in her hotel and they end up having to move for the night. They go to London for an award show next where Luke really lets his love for her show. After attending the award show with Thompson, Luke and Calla go to see Wicked, get dinner, and just do some couple activities. But, when they return to the States, they find out they were not careful enough. Calla has three shows left and Like was technically let go by Cody but stays on because that is what Calla wants. After the last show both of then are drugged and Calla is brought back to her home in LA where she is being held against her will by her family. Thompson decided to come to her aid. After 5 days of being trapped in her room she is let out to dinner. Luke his hiding in the bathroom of the restaurant and they run away to Montana. 3 years later they bought a house, got married, and have twins. Calla is still writing and she went on a small tour for the new album she released but she is now living the life dhe wanted to live, so is Luke.

This book started off strong, with the enimies to lovers, slow burn vibe. But then is got very smutty very fast. Like he fingered her for the first time and then they were not stop grinding all over each other and I was like I definitely missed something, it felt too drastic of a jump. Then when she died her hair and got a tattoo. I loved the hair, but that tattoo was never mentioned again, like literally forgetten. Also then being drugged and kidnapped like im sorry what the actual fuck. It was felt too out of this world. Maybe if the book had been longer and the story could have built up to that more, but it just felt too much. Also I liked Luke but then he just became an obssed very jelous man and it really turned me off of him, like girl the man is creepy obssed with you. I do like the character development of Thompson and the downfall of Ashley, Brayden, and her parents. I liked we got to see Cody in the end, married and a weap up to gis and Luke’s story. But Calla and Luke’s story felt way to rushed like way to much happened in the last 50% of the book I needed to be longer.

This book makes me want to fall in love again!

If you like slow burn and forbidden romance, this book is for you. The main characters are lovable and relatable. The character development is flawless. With the dual POV you see them grow and mature as the story progresses. The cute, spice and everything nice are always present in every chapter.

I love that even though the main character, Calla, is a famous pop star, she is also humble and down to earth. I can relate to her, because she is really strong but, at the same time, she is sensitive. On the other hand, Luke struggles with his feelings. He has the urge to protect Calla in a more personal level, but is conflicted with being only her bodyguard. The plot around their work relationship and how that evolves is a must read!

✨ My favorite quote, without context, is: “Just give the woman the damn bag of chips.”

❗️The Breakdown is book 2 in a series but is a complete standalone and is meant for ages 18+.

💜 A big THANK YOU to Sunny Babe PR and D.C. Kile for sending me this ARC. I truly appreciate it.

💜 Muchísimas gracias a Sunny Babe PR y a D.C. Kile por enviarme este ARC. Verdaderamente lo agradezco.

The Breakdown by D.C. Kile : Bodyguard romance

📚Book 2 (Standalone):Tortured Hearts series

🎵 Forbidden romance
🎵Workplace romance
🎵Forced proximity
🎵Grumpy vs Sunshine
🎵Secret dating
🎵Bodyguard & Pop Princess.

This book follows Luke Pierson, the bodyguard, and America's Sweetheart, pop star Calla James. The last thing Luke wants to do is follow a pop star around but he doesn’t have much of a choice. It is only for a few months.
Calla is on the verge of a breakdown. She just goes with the flow and does everything everyone tells her to do. How long can she keep this up?

Omw, I am a huge bodyguard storyline reader. It’s one of my favourite things to read and this did not disappoint. Who wouldn’t like a novel following a famous singer falling for her bodyguard.

Calla is a people pleaser. She lets everyone make decisions for her and just went with it until Luke walked in her life. The grumpy bodyguard that doesn’t want to be her friend and is just there to protect her. But he see everything. Calla’s character goes through a lot in this book and we get to see her character development through everything. I love seeing a bit behind the scene of a pop star touring and how much pressure there really is.

Luke just wants to do this assignment and get it over with. Pop songs is not his thing and he doesn’t have any interest in protecting America’s sweetheart. He is only doing this because his best friends and boss asked him too. Luke doesn’t know what he wants in life and throughout the story we get to see him figuring things out. He and Calla is such a cute couple and brings out the best in each other.

This is a quick read and the writing is amazing. I love this book, the character developments, the story line and the atmosphere. If you like romance with smut, but not talking anything way for the story, this book is for you!

Thank you Sunny Babe PR and D.C. Kile for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review .

The Breakdown is book 2 in the tortured hearts series from D.C. Kile. It is a a complete standalone so you don’t have to read the previous book to jump into this one. This is the story of Luke and Calla.

I will be honest i haven’t read tons of bodyguard books, and rockstar romances is not my favorite trope, because it’s hit and miss for me but i love DC Kiles books so i gave it a whirl and im so glad i did… i absolutely adored this book.

Luke, our MMC, is an ex -military protective agent. He has been assigned as Calla's new bodyguard when her previous bodyguard goes on paternity leave. Luke is not thrilled about this assignment but he does as asked. Luke is the first person to actually truly understand Calla and truly sees her and not what she can do for him, or give him in return. He wants her to do what makes her happy.

Calla, is our Americas Sweetheart. She is a pop star who is basically just going through the motions and is truly unhappy in her life. No one ever listened to her.. except Luke. You just can’t help but think would you people listen… I mean what does she have to do to be heard???Calla man she went through so much to get to her happy place and I’m so happy she got that.

I absolutely loved Luke and Calla both so much. You couldn’t help but root for them to get to their HEA after everything. I loved these characters individually so when they not only get together but get their HEA too it made me swoon. This story has banter, tension and spice and I loved to see it all unfold.

My only thought is I wish the ending was a bit more to it but i still absolutely loved this book from DC Kile

Thank you to @sunnybabepr and @authordckile for sending me this book for the opportunity to review it! I had the pleasure of reading The Penalty (book 1 of The Tortured Hearts series) and jumped on the opportunity to read book 2.

The Breakdown by D.C. Kile completely stole my attention from page one — I was immediately drawn in by both Calla and Luke. There’s something magnetic about them, like they each carry this weight that the world doesn’t quite see… but somehow, they notice it in each other. That instant connection? Electric.

What I thought would be a glitzy pop star/bodyguard romance took on a darker, more emotional tone — and ohhh I was not expecting that 👀. Beneath the sparkle of fame and the red carpet sheen is this raw, heart-wrenching exploration of identity, vulnerability, and what it really means to be seen.

Calla James may be “America’s Sweetheart” to the world, but to Luke, she’s something else entirely — and watching their bond develop from wary allies to something deeper was just chef’s kiss. And Luke? Stoic, protective, secretly soft Luke? Ugh, love him.

It’s not just the chemistry (though it’s definitely there). It’s the ache, the quiet moments, the stolen glances and heavy silences that say more than words ever could. And when Calla starts to crack under the pressure of her world… let’s just say, I was rooting for her every step of the way.

D.C. Kile delivers a beautifully written story with emotional depth, nuance, and yet another couple that made my heart feel things. If you love slow-burn romance with a touch of angst, this one’s a must-read. 💫

Trigger warnings: sexually explicit content, dubious consent (not between main characters), cheating (not between main characters)

Firstly, Thank you to SunnyBabePR and the author for allowing me to read this as an ARC.

I loved this book so much. Calla and Luke’s story is so inspiring. Not only is it a body guard x pop star, forced proximity, forbidden love story, this book goes into so much more.

Calla is a worn down, tired, over worked pop star and she is just looking to do what she loves and be there for her fans. But everyone seems to be against her. Her entire entourage (including her parents) are willing to see her become a shell of herself as long as they get paid.

In comes Luke. He’s a broody, stoic, no b.s. “executive protection agent”. He does not want to be attached to a pop star, or anyone’s friend. Despite the odds, these two find a way to steal each other’s hearts and fall in love.

I think what I loved most about this book is Calla’s character development. D.C. Kile creates a world where Calla is forced to overcome her need to please everyone around her. Through the author’s written word you feel hopeful that Calla can come out on top. When she finally stands up for herself I was on my feet whispering “yes!” to myself. I felt proud of her because I felt connected to her. That is what a great book does. Watching her take control of her life and stand up for herself was exhilarating. Seeing Luke care for her and help her grow had me holding my heart. This was truly a great book.

On top of all of that, the spice was a great addition. It was steamy and sensual. It added an extra layer to the love that was flowing off each page.

5/5 I highly recommend this book

If you're like me, you love a good grumpy x sunshine trope with banter, secretly longing looks, spice, and forced proximity. The Breakdown has all of that and more!
Luke Pierson takes on a new job as the bodyguard of popular singer Calla James. He thinks it'll be a walk in the park with his military background. He'll make sure she's safe and no crazed fans get too close to potentially harm her. He has no interest in even getting to know her or listening to a single song of hers. Until he spends more and more time around her. That icy demeanor of his and his desire to keep to himself melts away thanks to the Miss James.
On the outside, Calla seems to have it all. The singing career, a successful tour, adoring fans, a loving actor boyfriend. But underneath she's drowning. No one truly cares about her wellbeing. They only care about what she can give them. Her parents, the people who work for her. Calla is just dollar signs to them.
Luke is the first person to simply ask her if she's okay.
And from that small yet caring question builds the love they both fall head first into for each other. It happens slow and at first Luke doesn't even realize he's developing feelings for Calla. It's forbidden and could cost him his job. But soon enough making sure Calla is finally happy and finally truly loved becomes more important to Luke than any job on the line.
The Breakdown is the second book in the Tortured Hearts series but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend adding it to your TBR!

Three words: SO FREAKING CUTEEEEE!!!
Ohhhh my god this book was the cutest yet saddest (at times) book I’ve ever read!!! This story reminded me so much of how I think Taylor Swift and many other pop stars must feel on the daily!! This book was so heartbreaking!!! On multiple occasions I was screaming at my book and wishing that everyone would just STOP AND LISTEN to my girl Calla!!! It was like she was a caged bird who wanted to be free ughhh it was so sad!! She went through so much in this book and I’m so glad she ended up sticking up for herself in the end and telling them what SHE wanted!!! Her character development was amazing I was SO proud of her!! She was so sweet too and she deserved NONE of what she was being put through!!

The romance on the other hand…

The Breakdown is releasing on April 16th! 🎉
I received an e-mail from Sunny Babe PR to ask if I wanted to ARC-read this book. I saw ‘bodyguard’ and I was sold. This was a really good story. Calla is America’s Sweetheart and leads a very busy life. Luke gets assigned to be her bodyguard during her tour. They don’t really like each other at first. He is too closed-off for Calla’s liking, and Luke hates that she lets people decide everything for her. But Calla is exhausted, and she finds an escape in Luke, he shows her how life can be and how to stand up for herself. When on top of everything, Calla finds out her long-time boyfriend is cheating, she has a bit of a breakdown…
I loved to read how Luke was there for her, how he let het decide everything and supported her. He is such a sweet and caring person. It was beautiful to see their relationship grow, and to see Calla become independent and strong. Really good story.
The storyline took a bit of a weird turn towards the end, but that’s my opinion. I feel like more could’ve been done with the story that would be a bit less extreme and be a bit more realistic. But I still loved their story and how everything ended so I could look past it really quick. This is definitely a recommendation!!
The Breakdown is releasing April 16th, and I hope everyone who reads it loves it as much of as I do! 💚

Luke Pierson is an executive protective agent who has been handed his next assignment, to work with America’s Sweetheart, pop star Calla James. He’s not enthusiastic about it, but as his assignment goes by, he begins to see the woman Calla is. She’s on the verge of a breakdown, worn thin by her team and the pressures of fame, and Luke soon finds himself as Calla’s unexpected refuge.

THE BREAKDOWN is the second book in the Tortured Hearts series but can be read as a standalone. The series is forbidden romances, with this one being a celebrity x bodyguard.

I have no idea what D.C. Kile puts in her books, but I am always instantly drawn in and wholly invested. I love the characters she writes, they are always well-fleshed out, dynamic, and relatable. Her writing is simple, easy to read, and so bingeable.

That said, Calla and Luke are two characters I can’t get enough of. They’re each written with a good amount of depth, back story, and flaws. I love the banter that they share – it’s so fun. The romance is beautiful with ample angst, tension, and spice. I loved how supportive and caring Luke is towards Calla as she navigates through advocating for herself and her own wellbeing.

The ending was exactly what I’d hoped for and everything this couple deserves. I’m always a sucker for an epilogue, and this was just the perfect little addition to Luke and Calla’s story.

I would like to thank SunnyBabePR and the author of this advanced digital copy for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions expressed are my own.

An absolutely humungous thank you to the team at Sunny Babe PR for granting me access to this copy of The Breakdown.

I had an absolute BALL reading this. I absolutely, positively fell in love with the characters - I just wanted the best for them. Kile wrote Calla to be so multi-dimensional, and I love the way in which the harsh reality of being a pop star was explored in all its horrific glory. The novel explored the issues with the industry very well.

Luke. Luke has my heart and soul. A grumpy, workaholic determined to just do his job and that's that - crossing the t's and dotting the i's. I just adored how he was so determined to do his job to the best of his ability and tried his hardest not to let anything get in the way of that. His personality matched the 'bodyguard' vibe to begin with and it was divine to see such a progression of his character over the course of the read.

Honestly, the vibes were immaculate. I got annoyed at parts, giggled at parts, felt overly emotional at different parts and it just made me feel so many things. An absolute rollercoaster of a read. I just cannot quite put into words just how beautiful this was to read. There was so much substance to the story, the lives and the successes of the characters, of course as well as a happy ending. Who doesn't love one of those?

When bodyguard Luke is assigned to protect popstar Calla James, he expects dress fittings, drama, and red carpets. However, he finds so much more!

This was my first book by D.C. Kile so I wasn’t sure what to expect but the moment I dove in, I was met with a well-crafted story and a writing style that I really enjoyed. The writing and details helped make the story feel more realistic and I found it to be a well written representation of what celebrities can go through. I think every topic was handled with care and respect, while also making me invested as a reader.

Calla James, our FMC, is really going through it! As a strong yet sensitive girly, she was easy to relate to as a main character! As the book went on, watching Calla learn to stand up for herself was such a treat! Enter Luke, our MMC, and oh boy! Luke is such a sweetheart. I loved how he went beyond his job description to protect Calla. These two together were so sweet. While I wasn’t sure how we were going to get there at one point, the ending gave me everything I could have wanted to wrap this story up!

This book is the 2nd in a series but can be read as a complete standalone. Make sure to read the trigger warnings, but I highly recommend checking this one out! Thank you to Sunny Babe PR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. All feedback is my own honest opinion.

D.C. Kile has done it again - a forbidden bodyguard romance that immediately pulled me in with its Twisted Games vibes. The premise alone - pop superstar Calla embarking on a tour with her stoic, all-business bodyguard Luke - promised a delicious dance of desire and duty. And let me tell you, Kile delivered.

What I really loved was how Kile built their connection. It wasn't some cheesy, instant thing. You really saw Luke trying to stay professional, and you totally understood why he was fighting it. But Calla? She's got this light about her, and you could tell it was slowly chipping away at his walls. It was that perfect slow burn that I absolutely live for.

The writing was great. It flowed so well, and I never felt like the story was dragging or jumping around. It just kept me turning the pages, wanting to see what would happen next, especially with that little spark between Calla and Luke getting hotter and hotter.

Thank you, Sunny Babe PR, for sending me an advanced copy - you guys are the best! Seriously, if you're looking for a romance that's a little bit forbidden, a little bit angsty, and has a twist that'll knock your socks off, you HAVE to read this one. I gave it a solid 4 stars, and I'm still thinking about Calla and Luke! Let me know when you read it so we can fangirl together!

I ADORED THIS BOOK. First of all, I love a bodyguard romance and this one for sure took the cake. The plot was everything, the writing was great and the characters were so well created. What i loved about this story is the DRAMA!!! I was consuming it. I mean a cheating boyfriend, a manager that doesn’t care, parents who are ruining your life and on top of all of that, the realistic situation of fame. It was perfect.

Luke deserved an award. I mean not only did he actually care about Calla but he actually saw her for who she was. That just made me love him more. And of course he was just literally everything. It reminds me of the bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. By the ends of the story, i was just so happy he saved her.

Can we talk about how crazy her manager was?? Like what in the world. Anyway….I loved Calla. I thought she was super funny, and just deserved a break. It really makes you appreciate celebrities and what they go through.

My favorite scene is on the bus when she’s writing her songs and he tells her he likes it. It’s cute because it shows how Luke actually saw her as a person and her talent rather than just a celebrity. Their banger back and forth warmed my heart because Calla really needed a friend.

Thank you DC Kile and Sunny Babe PR for letting me read this story! Definitely a highly recommended read.
