Swashbuckling fun

I grew up fascinated by pirates. There used to be a restaurant on Daniel Island known as the Queen Anne's Revenge that was pirate themed--I loved it! Going inside you were greeted by animatronic Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard, along with all sorts of memorabilia. Then there was the Holy City herself, where you can walk past where Bonnet was hung, or go to the Provost Dungeon where he was held awaiting execution and read his pleas for mercy. I always heard that he became a pirate to escape a nagging wife, slightly different than the account in this book that it was boredom he was running from, but an equally good story. I was also told the Anne Bonny, herself a Charleston native, was asked if she wanted to see Calico Jack before they hanged him and she replied angrily, "If he would have only fought like a man, he would not now be hanged like a dog." Obviously I can't prove it, but it made me so curious! This book is great for kids feeling that same pull, wanting to learn about the Golden Age, full of tales of adventure sure to excite!

A Thrilling and Well-Researched Journey into the Golden Age of Piracy!

“Pirates and the Golden Age of Piracy” is a must-read for history buffs, adventure seekers, and anyone fascinated by the real stories behind history’s most infamous outlaws. This book masterfully separates fact from fiction, bringing to life the daring exploits, brutal battles, and secret hideouts of the world’s most notorious pirates.

From Blackbeard’s fearsome reputation to Anne Bonny’s defiance of societal norms, the book introduces readers to the true faces behind the legends. It dismantles common myths—no, pirates didn’t always bury treasure or make victims walk the plank—while delivering gripping tales of naval warfare, high-seas plunder, and the lawless havens where pirates thrived. The inclusion of modern piracy offers a fascinating contrast, proving that the spirit of piracy is far from dead.

What makes this book stand out is its engaging, fast-paced storytelling and meticulous historical research. Each chapter is packed with action, making it easy to read and hard to put down. Whether you’re a casual reader or a serious history enthusiast, you’ll appreciate how well the book balances entertainment with accuracy.

As a bonus, the final section explores how pirates have been portrayed in popular culture, showing how books, films, and TV have shaped our perception of these maritime rogues. This adds another layer of depth, making it a well-rounded read.

Verdict: An absolute treasure trove of pirate history! If you’re ready to embark on a thrilling journey through the lawless world of real-life pirates, this book belongs on your shelf. Highly recommended!

I've read and watched a lot of pirate content, and I wasn't sure what to expect here, but this was really well done!!! I think this book does what it sets up to do perfectly, I think if you have a physical edition, the book is organized in a way that it makes it very easy to pick up and search for a pirate, location or specific time period you want to read about - it works very well as a research book - and having read the digital edition, I ended up underlining a lot and coding it with colors!!!

The book is organized with multiple chapters, separated by time periods, going from ancient times to modern times, introducing each chapter with context, and then also some more if you have multiple time periods in each chapter. I also really enjoyed how the book explored places that had a big pirate activity, and how that impacted those places and made them and destroyed them by the end.

Then moving to the main topic, I think the book does very well with small biographies from a lot of pirates, keeping you entertained with enough facts, both personal and the customs themselves, and making the connections between all their lives.

Still on these chapters, I also really LOVE how each chapter ends with a collection of the facts - small little things that sum up the chapter, mostly going into overall facts about the pirates!!!

Finally, I also really love the references to the cultural impact of the pirates, and how the way we know them from books and movies, and that's the picture that stayed through time... and I also really appreciate the final chapter, dedicated to adaptations (and shout out to Black Sails always makes me happy)!!!

On the other hand, the epilogue is the thing that worked the less for me, I don't think it wrapped the book in away it completely fit with all that we had been told before. I think you feel the research that went into it before, while the conclusion feels a bit too simplistic...

Now overall, this is definitely a recommendation I would give, this is a really good and thought out pirate book, and very well organized, making it easy to consult for what you need :D

A wonderful collection of biographies about various pirates throughout the centuries. Focused mainly on the golden age of piracy, the reader learns about such pirates as the ones that sailed the Caribean and American Coasts to those that traversed the Indian and China Seas. Not limited to just the male pirates readers learn about some of the notorious female pirates and how some are more ruthless than their male counterparts. Filled with pirate trivia and geography of the areas famous for pirates this is a great resource for any age.

I found this book very interesting and informative. I didn't realize that a lot of pirates started out with a commission from a certain country to actually plunder under their flag before they turned to being pirates. Some of them actually worked for their home navy. Besides all the information on the pirates the book gives you "swashbuckling pirate facts" at the end of each chapter. After reading this book it kind of makes me want to go on a hunt for lost pirate treasure.
