“It is not for us to decide who’s right and who’s wrong. We can only lament the innocent lives lost… that is the true tragedy of the situation.”

description

Xie Lian continues to be the heart of the story, and what I appreciate most about him is the quiet determination he carries through every situation. Even when things become chaotic and dangerous, his first instinct is always to protect the people around him. Watching him remain calm while trying to keep frightened villagers safe really highlights the kind of character he is. His compassion shows up in small but meaningful ways, and it makes his actions feel genuine and sincere. The supporting characters help keep the story interesting as well. Nan Feng and Fu Yao continue to accompany him, offering help while still keeping a bit of emotional distance. New characters named in this part of the story add a lot of tension and tragedy, and their backstories give the narrative more emotional weight.

The story itself moves quickly and keeps introducing new pieces of the world without feeling overwhelming. As the events unfold, more details about the heavenly court and the ghost realm start to come into focus. I enjoyed seeing how the communication between heavenly officials works and how the larger supernatural system functions behind the scenes. At the same time, the story still spends time in the mortal world, which helps keep things grounded. Seeing Xie Lian interact with ordinary villagers reminds the reader how forgotten he has become despite once being the Crown Prince of Xianle. I also liked where this volume ended. It stops at a moment that feels satisfying while also making me curious about what will happen next.

My main issue is still the same one I had with the first volume. Some of the darker panels look a little blurry, and it occasionally makes the art harder to fully appreciate. The illustrations are beautiful, so I wish those darker tones printed with a bit more clarity. Outside of that, the physical presentation of the book is excellent. The dust cover looks fantastic and the simplistic hardcover design is honestly stunning on a shelf. One thing I truly loved was seeing Bai Wuxiang used as White No Face’s name. It is the original Chinese name, and I strongly believe proper nouns should never be translated. A short annotation explaining the meaning would always be enough. Choices like that show respect for the original work and make the reading experience feel more authentic.

Ugh. Love this series. The way it ended? LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEEE. I feel like there were a lot of pages with no dialogue, more than the first book, but overall I enjoyed!
