The second volume in an action-packed graphic novel series starring an iconic new heroine who is a descendant of a legendary monster hunter!
Eowulf Wegmund (descendant of legendary monster hunter Beowulf, of course) can’t wait to escape the suburbs—with their boring chores and rules—to start her new job at Vulcan’s Celestial Supply Shop on the lost island of Celestina. Her first assignment? Deliver the dreaded Helm of Balor to a movie studio and keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Guarding an all-powerful super-weapon from a few monsters-turned-actors should be a piece of cake. Right?
On her first day on the job, Eowulf stumbles on a dark conspiracy involving missing magical creatures. Now, Eowulf and her new monster friends must face an interdimensional evil-doer and stop a cosmic cataclysm!
Mike Cavallaro is from New Jersey and has worked in comics and animation since the early 1990s. He's made work for most of the major comic book publishers, and has been a designer, background painter, and storyboard artist on numerous animated series for Cartoon Network, Warner Brothers, and MTV Animation. He teaches at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and is a member of the National Cartoonists Society.
Eowulf is back, this time working at an untraditional supply shop, and heading into what amounts to an episode of _The Studio_. Her first assignment puts her right in the throes of a series of monsters, but not the typical kind we might all expect in these spaces. Eowulf gets those AND the kind she's accustomed to: a real bonanza!
I really like that this book centers on developing Eowulf's capacity as a hero while also keeping her typical youthful peculiarities - in this case, a room so messy it's emitting a smell experienced by multiple characters! - at the forefront. For me, the illustrations are more meaningfully employed in this book than in the first, though this still runs text-heavy for the genre and audience and is a little slower than I'd have liked in terms of the pacing.
This is a great series with a lot to enjoy and a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to the next installment already.

3.5 stars = Good+
Eowulf enjoys a fascinating Hollywood-adjacent adventure when she does a job on a movie set and ends up captured by a villain. Fans of her first book (which I loved) will enjoy seeing her on a new adventure. I think I was missing some of the friendship elements of the first book in this one, but it's still a solid story for fans of fantasy and non-scary monster stories. The artwork is gorgeous as usual, with lots to enjoy in each frame, so graphic novel fans will love this. I don't think readers will have to have read book one to enjoy this story - but I loved book one, so I think it's definitely worth a read.
