Robin is caught in the General’s clutches, and it’s up to Batman to rescue hisintrepid young protégé. The Dark Knight knows he’s running headlong into a trap, but is the General really prepared for Batman like he thinks?
Mark Waid (born March 21, 1962 in Hueytown, Alabama) is an American comic book writer. He is best known for his eight-year run as writer of the DC Comics' title The Flash, as well as his scripting of the limited series Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright, and his work on Marvel Comics' Captain America.
I think DC has a special team devoted to making baby Dick Grayson look as adorable as possible, and they may have been a little too successful this round: Batman and Robin’s toughest enemy is revealed to be Gotham CPS, and I found myself rooting for CPS.
Actually a review for the entire series so far (Issues #1-7), but I’m posting it on #6 because THAT COVER. I think I need it framed. Actually, all of Chris Samnee’s art in this run is just absolutely gorgeous, but I wouldn’t be enjoying this nearly as much without the fabulous writing from Mark Waid. Together, they hit the perfect combination of heartwarming and adorable (again, that is a BABY) and surprisingly chilling and grim, in a way that almost reminded me of the best DCAU elements.
Definitely recommend, and I can’t wait for the rest of this!
It took me out when Dick said “hella” but otherwise, this was a great issue. Dick Grayson is fearless, and that wasn’t something he learned as Robin, it’s something he learned as a Flying Grayson and brought with him into Robin. That’s on full display here.
This has been my favorite issue so far! This was is filled with so many emotional highs that it legit has me tearing up. This issue encapsulates the beginning of Batman and Robin’s dynamic duo so well. But at the start of this issue batman is retry reasonably pissed. I would say it’s not just because Robin went out on his own and ended up captured by Grimaldi, but I would say most of it is the same reason I am mad…because of how emotionally distressed Alfred became because of it. You do not stress Alfred out, that is a testament. But I have to admit, Robin is lucky he is dealing with mob bosses and not Batman’s usual rogues, as these guys hold themselves to higher standards. Grimaldi didn’t even see the point in unmasking Dick, how are they possibly going to identity a child?
But like it was mentioned last issue, they have no problem using him as bait to lure in the bat. And as a bit of time goes by it seems they will get their wish granted. Batman got the location for Grimaldi from an informant and started his attack by allowing his at glider to crash through the side of the building! This was of course empty and a distraction to mask his entry from another point, but this visit he happened to stumble upon something completely unexpected…a lab. Right as batman arrived he found two scientists injecting a man strapped down to a table with some kind of fluid. They mentioned he was subject seventeen and spontaneously the man began to grow in muscle size and even break free from the straps. This was a failure in their book which immediately went out of control and batman swooped in to try and stop this situation. Whoever the poor soul was that became subject seventeen apparently had it out for batman, as immediately upon seeing him the giant monster of a man started destroying everything in his path to get to batman.
With the facility being ripped apart like this Grimaldi and the rest of his goons made a break for it, taking anything they could and destroying the rest. With all the dangerous chemicals down there the building will be gone in no time. Robin wasn’t going to wait around to go up in flames, and using the skills he picked up from q contortionist at the circus he was able to get free of the ropes they tied him up in. Downstairs batman attempted to reason with the monster, to try and get him safe so they can revert the drug in his system, but the only thing this man wants to do is kill batman. Which ultimately lead to a number of spilled chemicals mixing with each other and blowing my the lab up! Batman quickly got out and punched his way through small time guards to get up to where Robin is. But by the time he arrived…robin was no where to be seen and the window was wide open. By the time batman got to the roof, Robin was walking across a makeshift tightrope to the other building.
Robin: “Oh, hey. About time, dude. You take the bus or something.”
Hahahaha, batman cannot hide his smirk from seeing Robin like that…but Alfred in his flustered stress back at the manor certainly can. Alfred is calling it for the night and is going to pretty steamed at them for a moment. But now it’s time to have a talk. Dick isn’t fired but they are installing fingerprint activation on all vehicles, but he did cost them tonight. Not monetarily, but he cost them information. Grimaldi had a lab and now they don’t know why or where to find Grimaldi. Out of all their resources the most important is information, and every night that doesn’t bring them closer to cleaning up the streets of Gotham is wasted. The people of the city can’t afford that and to batman that is proof that Robin isn’t ready to be on his own. This irks Dick quite a bit as he still thought he did a great job. But this is just further proof that Dick isn’t listening to Batman and shows signs of him being undisciplined and out of control. This really sets Dick off, he knows all about disciple. Ever since he was three he has trained his ass off to be an aerialist, training 10 hours a day until his hands were covered in blisters. He fell off that tightrope a million time before he learned to fight through the cramps, showmanship is hard. But Batman doesn’t see this as a show, and if he isn’t willing to take it seriously then maybe it was a mistake to bring him in. Dick shudders at this for a moment before clapping back with how seriously he takes this. There are moments here where batman looks shocked as Dick completely unloads all of his feelings. Ever since Batman took him in and helped him stop his parents killers he could of stopped, but now he knows there are people just as bad as Zucco out there and they’re everywhere and they are bringing pain to people that don’t deserve it and he swears that he can’t go by without stopping them all from hurting anyone else. Batman may be able to fire him, but he can’t stop him! And with that, Bruce dawned a very calm look and thanked Dick. He finally opened up, as different as they are they share that exact same anger and going out and fighting crime gives it purpose. Dick isn’t here to help Bruce, they are here to help each other. “Now…are you going to teach me how to walk a tightrope or not?” Hahahaha, I love this moment so much! It’s so raw and so necessary for their relationship to continue successfully.
But as the issue comes to an end an issue we have so far successfully avoided rears it’s ugly two faced head. As Grimaldi sets up a temporary shop in a warehouse, two-face comes to visit baring a gift. The file he stole from the police. What could be so embarrassing that Gordon wouldn’t even admit its existence to batman? Well a file on batman of course! And every person the police believes could be his dual identity. Sigh…Jim. You just put a lot of innocent people in Grimaldi’s crosshairs. Include the ever elusive billionaire Bruce Wayne!

truly cannot get over the vibes of it all, but most especially the ending scene where dick explains to bruce how devoted he is to the whole being a hero thing. him finally opening up about not just wanting to find his parents killers but that eventually growing into fighting and preventing evil people from being evil and doing that to other families and kids!
and most of all bruce landing on the importance of them helping each other. because bruce is helping dick grow, obviously, but dick is doing the same to bruce!

I fricken love Batman and Robin Year One so much! It’s just SO good. Bruce and Dick finally hashing it out only for Dick to open up, Dick escaping and putting his time as a Flying Grayson to use, the last page??? I just really am loving this run!

I’m convinced that Mark Waid is the only writer who gets the integral relationship between Batman and Robin. The discussion between the two at the end, with Bruce confronting Dick on his motivations was so well done and I love reading their dynamic.
De las mejores grapas de la colección. Robin brilla, muchos que éramos detractores de él aquí te vuelve loco, y tiene una conversación con Bruce para enmarcar, aparte de un montón de sorpresas.Imprescindible.
Smart ass Robin. Exasperated, yet determined, Batman. Plus the whole Two-Face manipulating the mob scene is just perfect. No notes. I am loving this series!!
