Since the 1940s, the High School prom has been an annual event where teenagers could dress in their finest attire, dance, and party until the sun came up. Over the decades, proms have gone from ultra-formal to casual and everything in between. But one thing has remained the same…
The vibe!
The drama!
The lights!
The action!
If you close your eyes, you can imagine it, taste it, smell it, hear it, feel your feet standing on the polished floor of the high school gym. There’s an arch of balloons in the entryway, music bumping, glitter in the air and wild energy before they finally crown the Prom King and Queen.
S.E. Reed is an award-winning multi-genre author. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but longed to see the rest of America. After living in all five regions, she finally settled in Florida–nestled between the swampy Everglades and Atlantic Ocean. Many of her stories have a strong contemporary southern theme, but she also dabbles in the strange, bizarre, and fantastical.
It’s been a long time since I went to prom—but this anthology transported me back to that time with stories of magical and not-so-magical dances. The authors did a wonderful job of capturing the angst, hopes and dreams of their teenage protagonists, and I loved reading all the different versions of prom! I typically read women’s fiction, general fiction or mystery with an occasional rom-com thrown in every now and then, but I really enjoyed my introduction to different genres in this anthology. Spy capers, sci-fi, fantasy, poetry, YA—so many genres are represented in this collection. There’s even a hockey-themed prom story. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology, and found myself asking “what happens next” after finishing many of them. I wasn’t ready to let some of these characters go! I was also honored to have a story I cowrote with my husband, Bruce Buchanan, included in the anthology. It was my first published piece of fiction, and I had some much fun reminiscing about late 1980s era prom fashion. I guarantee you’ll find your perfect prom story match in this collection. Consider this your promposal—Will you join me in reading “Prom Perfect”?
