The author of Call the Canaries Home returns with an enchanting novel about marriage, friendship, and second chances, where the power of a new perspective reveals the impact of time lost…and found.
Selling real estate full time, raising two young daughters, clinging to a slipping marriage―Audrey’s life is definitely a balancing act. But when a tumble down the stairs leaves her with more than just a bump on the head, she wakes up five years in the past, before the first tear in her marriage threatened her trust in Travis.
Her kids are babies again. Her career is full of promise. Her dog, Willow, is still alive. In this miraculous do-over, she could prevent a heartbreaking tragedy and land a game-changing sale. But having it all means putting her trust in Travis and owning up to the part she might have played in their separation.
As she relives and revises the past, Audrey discovers who her real friends are and what her heart actually wants. But before she can truly come home, she must decide. Is Travis the obstacle holding her back from her dreams, or the key to having it all?
Audrey is a mom of two and a real estate agent; she starts to find her life unravelling due to the pressures of being a working mom. She and her husband decide on a trial separation, and then she falls down the stairs. This accident sends her five years into the past. Audrey wakes up to her children being five years younger and her marriage still going strong. Given a second chance with knowledge of the future, she must carefully navigate her decisions so she doesn't make the same mistakes. This gives her a moment to reflect on her own culpability for her crumbling marriage. Will Audrey learn from the errors of her ways, or will she repeat the same mistakes of the past? The five-year jump back will force her to see what it is she truly wants from her marriage and career.
This book was a heartfelt and engaging read that mixes a bit of magical realism with women's fiction, focusing on the ordinary struggles of marriage, motherhood, and career. I loved the idea of waking up five years ago and being able to fix what you can and learn what you really want out of life. What is really important: the kids, the job, or your marriage? Laura Barrow asks these questions in a fun and charming way. The book is deep; don't be fooled. It reminds you that relationships are built on love and respect, but also on the choices we make. Being thrown back in time gives Audrey a different perspective, and I liked the way the author handles it. The writing is relatable, witty, and tender all at once. It was also very insightful. Who among us hasn't asked, "What if?" This is more than just a romance; it's a warm, insightful, and ultimately uplifting story about choosing love and rediscovering the magic in the everyday. A truly delightful read, The Marriage Slip is a hopeful and uplifting story, perfect for those who enjoy books about love, family, a touch of magic, and the possibility of rewriting one's future.

What a shame! After reading a friend’s review, I was excited to read this book. But, I don’t know, I guess I just don’t…care? Audrey was kind of annoying, in my opinion. She was always complaining, and like, gosh, does anything make you happy? And the whole slipping back into time made no sense because she didn’t exactly wish for it, and there is no logical explanation for that event. Perhaps there’s a reason for it, but I’m not going to find out. I lost interest in the story, and I’m in the mood for something a little more upbeat and different. Don’t get me wrong, though. Laura Barrow is a great author, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the prose or the writing. This book just isn’t for me. 🤷♀️
But don’t let my negative review stop you from reading it for yourself. Just because I didn’t like it, it doesn’t mean you won’t. And, in all honesty, I hope you do enjoy it. ☺🩷🧡
Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the free digital arc! All opinions and statements are my own.
I hate to rate so low. This is the type of book I normally love. Marriage, family, conflict.... it just didn't hit the mark for me unfortunately. the Marriage Slip started off very strong. This book felt very authentic to many a marriage, family life with children, the maternal role in marriage. It was a sad but true story and relatable. Then the plot twist, MFC falls down the steps, hits her head and suddenly wakes up on the same day 5 years earier in the delivery room about to deliver her second child. This could have been a great 're-do' second chance story. It fell very flat. The MFC and her whining and annoyance with everyone and everything. The confusion she had was over done and took away from the story as well. I just could not enjoy and found my self skimming to get to the end.
This is such a fun time-slip second chance romance! I couldn’t help but relate to Audrey—her feelings of everyday monotony and responsibilities hit a little too close to home. But what I loved most was watching her grow, take accountability, and step into a fuller version of herself as the story unfolded.
The whole thing felt authentic in a way that made the magical premise completely believable. The pacing was spot-on, keeping me hooked without dragging, and the audiobook narrator brought so much warmth and personality that it felt like sitting down with a good friend telling me a story. Overall, this is a charming read that lingers after the last chapter!

The Marriage Slip by Laura Barrow — Audiobook Review 🎧 Thank you to NetGalley, Laura Barrow, and Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio for the advanced listening copy. 💕
So what’s it about? Audrey is doing it all—selling real estate, raising two young daughters, and holding on for dear life to a marriage that feels like it’s slipping away. But then one tumble down the stairs changes everything. She wakes up five years in the past: her kids are babies again, her career is still budding, her beloved dog is alive, and her marriage hasn’t unraveled yet.
Now, Audrey has a miraculous “do-over.” But the question is—what will she do with it? Can she repair her marriage? Can she prevent heartbreak and tragedy? Or will she make new choices that set her on a completely different path?
My thoughts This story instantly reminded me of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Maybe in Another Life (also a 4-star read for me). That was part of why I requested it—but Laura Barrow really makes this one her own. She nails the “what if” premise while keeping it grounded in the messy, relatable realities of marriage and motherhood.
The emotions felt real. Audrey’s exhaustion, resentment, guilt, and love—it’s all here. And if you’re a mom, especially with little ones, this book will hit home.
Megan Tusing’s narration also deserves a shout-out 👏 She carried the audiobook beautifully, with a voice that made it easy to stay engaged. Top-notch performance.
Final thoughts It’s real—and while I don’t have brand-new babies anymore, I was able to relate. It wasn’t that long ago that my youngest was attached to my breast, I hadn’t brushed my hair in days, and I wanted to divorce my husband too 😅 In those times, the resentment blacks out the love. And as time goes on, if you aren’t careful, you might forget… and need a fall down the steps, waking up in the past and birthing your youngest baby all over again. 😉
This book moved me, entertained me, and left me thoughtful. If you’re a mom, a fan of domestic fiction, or someone who has ever wondered “what if,” The Marriage Slip deserves a spot on your list.
I thought this was such a fun read! If you love the time travel aspect in books, then you need to grab this one. This is a second chance romance too, and I love that trope. Audrey is a married mom of two, but her marriage is on the outside. She and her husband decide to separate and see what happens. Then she falls down the stairs. When she comes to, she's five years in the past. Now she feels like she's getting a second chance. To reflect on her actions throughout the marriage. Will she use this opportunity to change her future and save her marriage? I truly loved this heartfelt and hopeful book. I love how the author portrayed these very relatable life circumstances and characters, showing you what really matters in life. I loved this author's writing style and was captivated by this story. I will definitely read more books by this author in the future.

Here’s the thing about ratings: different people are looking for different things in their books. Revelatory, I know. I generally like marriage romances and that’s why I requested The Marriage Slip on NetGalley, but it was not for this reader. I found it cliched and I thought it painted the MCs as the most one dimensional caricatures of themselves. I didn’t believe the sudden turnaround, nor did I believe the love story. Both the FMC and the MMC seemed wildly immature. The most interesting part of the story was the FMC’s blossoming friendship with her neighbor, but that was, unfortunately, a very small part of the book. I also thought the loop with the MMC’s parents remained open, and I would have liked to see some closure there. I was waffling between two ratings, but I had to go with the lower one when, in the epilogue, the FMC directly spells out the lessons she has learned and that we are to have learned from her journey. Show me, don’t tell me.

I really enjoyed this story so much. As a married, working mom, I feel like I related to Audrey on so many levels. There are frustrations she mentioned that are frustrations I've experienced myself, and so I truly felt like this author really nailed the authenticity of a married co-parenting relationship.
I also really enjoyed following Audrey through the struggles of single parenting, dealing with a pre-teen with an attitude, crappy friends, and making new ones. I really felt so connected to the characters and situations and I don't find that happening very often. I feel like we really saw her grow, not only in her relationships, but becoming more understanding with the situations around her.
This book is up there for one of my favorite reads this year and I'm so thankful for NetGalley, Laura Barrow, and Brilliance Publishing for allowing me to listen and review.
The Marriage Slip By: Laura Barrow Pub date: October 7, 2025 Publisher: Lake Union Imagine having a do-over in life! Audrey’s life is chaotic as a married woman with two daughters, and a full-time job selling real estate. She is clinging to life and her marriage is strained with Travis. She has also lost her dog Willow. After an excited, she wakes up five years in the past. What will she change? Can you change her life and find out what truly matters? I absolutely love this book and recommend to everyone. Life gets busy and you need to stop and realize every day matters! Live is too short for regrets, and taking chances in life are worth it. Part women’s fiction, part time-slip fantasy, this story is all about second chances and rediscovering what matters most.
Audrey is a mom trying to juggle work, kids, and a marriage that feels like it’s slipping away. After a freak accident, she wakes up five years in the past—back before things went wrong. Suddenly she has a chance to see her relationship with fresh eyes, rethink old choices, and figure out what really matters in her marriage, her family, and her own happiness.
This was my first Laura Barrow book, and I adore her warm, relatable writing style that balances real-life struggles with just the right amount of heart. I thought the premise of The Marriage Slip was really fun—who wouldn’t want the chance to rewind time and see their marriage with fresh eyes? I liked how the story explored second chances, motherhood, and the everyday struggles of balancing it all. Audrey’s journey felt relatable, and the time-slip twist gave it a unique edge. On the other hand, some parts dragged a little and a few moments leaned too heavily into the day-to-day details, which slowed the pacing. At the same time, it was an engaging read that got me thinking about how the little things matter in love and marriage.
All in all, The Marriage Slip was an original take on love, marriage, and second chances. Even though a few slower spots kept it from being a total standout, I enjoyed following Audrey’s journey and the way it reminded me how much the little choices shape our lives. It’s a heartfelt read for anyone who likes stories about marriage, family, and getting the rare chance to hit “reset.”
Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Audio for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
If you had the chance to go back in your life for a second chance, or the ability to do things differently, would you? Audrey didn’t have a choice, as she was transported back 5 years. “ The Marriage Slip” is about family, forgiveness and appreciating what’s right in front of you.
Audrey and Travis’s marriage is “slipping”, overwhelmed by the responsibility of 2 kids including appointments, commitments and responsibilities. Audrey is a real estate agent and Travis a teacher, both giving and doing what they think is everything they possibly can. Audrey takes a fall from the top of the stairs and hits her head and is catapulted back 5 years for a “do-over”. Her black lab “Willow” is alive and well and she is having her second baby. She is given the opportunity to save Willows life and have a second look at life as she knew it . She has the chance to “have it all” but is it enough to save her slipping marriage. Does she believe the grass is greener or will she resort back to how Travis once stole her heart?
It’s a novel about perspective, life experience and appreciation. It was entertaining and I recommend this read for anyone who likes to read about growing families, marriage and friendship. I loved it.
Thanks to @suzyapprovedbooktours @netgalley @laurabarrow for this book and eARC in exchange for my honest review, all opinions are my own.
I enjoyed THE MARRIAGE SLIP a lot! Audrey’s struggles were really authentic and brought her character to life. The time slip aspect was cool, I have read a few books with time slips and I have enjoyed all of them so far. This one has all the “feels”, including some romance. I loved it, 5 stars!
Many thanks to Laura Barrow for my gifted copy.

***4.5 stars rounded up for Goodreads*** I loved both of Laura Barrow's two previous books SO much that I didn't even read the synopsis of this one before starting it. I think it's called magical realism when time travel is involved. It's not my favorite type of book, BUT I absolutely loved this book. It really dove into the intricacies of how easy it is to unintentionally damage your marriage. If we had it to do over, would we do it all the same? So touching and thought-provoking!
Thank you to the author for an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
If you are looking for a book to make you feel all the feels... look no further! If you are looking for something to read about second chances.... you've found it! If you are looking for one that gives an alternate view on 'how your life could've turned out'... it's here! What can I say? This one hit ALL the spots for me!! And then some! Plus, a kind of a dual timeline!!!
Audrey is a Mom of two adorable girls who are rapidly growing up... She does it all... and is really starting to feel it... so much so, that she decides a trial separation from the love of her life, her husband Travis is the only way she can see herself through this time...
Just at the end of their months long trial separation, she has a 'life changing experience' in more ways than one... and, her EYES ARE OPENED to things she may not have seen so much in the past...
Will this bring the two of them closer together? Will it send them further apart? Can they sustain all that life is throwing at them? Or will they, and their marriage, crumble???
Stay tuned to find out!!!
OH... and the charming Southern Drawl of the narrator? Just soooo sweet!!!
5 huge, lovely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

What a fantastic book, emotional, little bit magical with HEA.We meet Audrey who struggles with every day challenges, work and feeling that she's all alone in this.Asking her husband for a break from each other, she's actually shocked when he agreed.Sharing custody, learning what she wants it's not easy, and having accident that slip back in time to five years earlier it's just impossible.I could really relate with Audrey going trough motherhood, marriage and balancing work. I also really like Audrey and Travis, they sound good together but some resentment and lack of comunication pull them apart.
It's a great book for summer, full of emotions, hope and little romance, don't wait pre-order your copy, this is book that I will re-read in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing and the author for the ARC of this book!
This plot was super basic. The main character was unlikable - snarky, bitter, undeserving of her kind neighbor and husband - and the back-in-time plot device only bore out the most obvious and shallow revelations. The audiobook narrator was pretty good, but the book overall was a total miss for me. Thanks to NetGalley for an opportunity to read this advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
"It occurs to me that you never know when you're in the best moments of your life until they are swallowed by the next moment and the next, until all you have left is the devastating knowledge that, when all is said and done, you actually had everything you ever wanted."
What if you got a second chance? A do-over? Would you change anything?
That’s exactly the question this book made me think about. From the outside, Travis and Audrey look like they have a happy marriage. But once you step inside their world, you see how much they’re struggling. Since having their second daughter, Audrey feels like she’s carrying the weight of everything on her own while Travis pulls away. No intimacy, no real connection, and she’s left wondering if separation—or even divorce—might be the only answer.
But then comes the twist I didn’t see coming. Audrey suddenly wakes up in the past—five years earlier, in the hospital, giving birth to her second daughter, Ruby. Her firstborn is just a toddler again, her marriage with Travis isn’t yet broken, and her dog Willow, who she’s lost in the future, is alive.
I loved how this story explores the “what ifs.” Audrey is stuck wondering: where did things go wrong? Could she have done something differently? Could Travis? And is this her chance to save not just her marriage, but everything she’s lost along the way?
This book really had me thinking about how easy it is to get lost in the day-to-day of marriage, parenting, and responsibilities—and how the little things add up over time. It’s emotional, heartfelt, and gave me that bittersweet mix of hope and heartbreak.
If you’ve ever thought about what you’d do with a second chance, The Marriage Slip will hit you right in the heart.
I received a review copy and these are my thoughts:
I love a magical realism story. This book was very interesting. I may not be able to directly relate to the wife and mother roles but Audrey is a very relatable character in her struggles. She is a working wife and mother and feels she is at her wits end. Her life hasn’t exactly turned out how she thought it would and her relationship with her husband is deteriorating, as she feels he doesn’t pull his wait around the house.
After a domestic accident, Audrey wakes up in hospital, only to find that she has gone back in time, to the day her youngest child is born - 5 years in the past. Keeping her husband at arms length but at the same time, trying to “fix” her future, Audrey comes to realise that maybe her husband wasn’t the only problem in their relationship.
This story served as a great reminder that communication is key in a relationship and that there are always two sides to every story. Audrey was so overwhelmed that she neglected to see the sacrifices her husband had also made in their relationship. Although he wasn’t pulling his wait around the house, when Audrey confronts him, he clearly points out that yes, there were things he could improve on, but he wasn’t a mind reader so if she had something to, to say it. It’s many times easier to just take control and do everything ourselves but where does that leave the partnership in a relationship?
The plot with the dog made me cry. I really felt for Audrey.
The shift in her friendships also gave me food for thought about how sometimes, even with our closest friends, we don’t have the whole picture and they can come to surprise us and in not the best way. This also shone a light on who we let influence us in our lives.
I really liked how Audrey resolves the conflict and the ending was sweet and comforting.
The Marriage Slip by Laura Barrow. Thanks to @amazonpublishing for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Audrey’s marriage is struggling as she balances her full time job as a realtor and caring for her two daughters. When a slip down the stairs causes her to wake up five years in the past, she gets a fresh examination of her marriage and what went wrong.
Loved this examination of not only marriage, but motherhood. I especially loved how it showed our preconceived notions can effect our perspectives so drastically; so many great sliding door moments in this one. Another huge part of it was how special our pets can be in our life. This was truly a heartwarming read, and while sad at times it ends on a happy note.
“No one wants to think about what happens when the love of your life becomes part of your past instead of your future.”
The issues the main character faces were relatable and realistic, as well as her reactions to them. It doesn’t mean she was likable the entire time. I found that this book it is a great portrayal of the mental load women often take in relationships while running the household and family, usually working full time as well. Overall, I like the story and thought the magical realism added to the main characters arc.
Thank you Lake Union Publishing for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley.
I really adored this story, especially the second chance romance. I am not a second chance girlie irl, but I’m a sucker for it in a romance novel and Laura Barrow did a great job with this one plus the touch of magical realism was perfection. The humor and focus on women’s struggles in motherhood and marriage made this story, and Audrey, so relatable.
Megan Tusing was a phenomenal narrator and perfect for this story. The way she embodied Audrey and her consistent inner monologue and conflict was *chef’s kiss*! I’m so glad I decided to go the audiobook route but honestly probably would’ve enjoyed it either way.
Thank you Lake Union Publishing and Brilliance Audio for the gifted eARC and ALC
I love books about second chances, and this one felt so relatable. It’s easy to get caught up in the everyday routine and take the little things in life for granted, instead of noticing what makes life truly special. My emotions were all over the place while reading this, and I absolutely loved its heartfelt message.
Who doesn't love a good, "What if..." story? This is a beautifully written story of love, friendship, heartache, and betrayal. I was hooked from page one, unable to put this book down. highly recommend.
Audrey is stuggling from the effects of being super mom. Working and taking care of her girls she has little left but resentment towards her husband, Travis. In the midst of an angry fight she says she wants to take a "break" and is surprised when Travis packs a bag and leaves. A tumble down the stairs tumbles Audrey 5 years in the past. I love all the possibilities of an alternative reality, time slip or time travel adventure. Audrey's character was easy to identify with and I enjoyed the realistic family dynamic. This book was not only entertaining but also provided a thought provoking second chance scenario. I had a combination read and audiobook. The narration by Megan Tusing was good especially the kids.
I just finished reading The Marriage Slip and i loved it. I did read the book from the perspective of a married woman whose children are growing into teenagers and so this book hit me hard emotionally and i was flooded with nostalgia throughout. I have no idea how the book would hit if i hadn't connected with the story so strongly, but for me it felt very relatable and personal.
I found Audrey likable and her situation definitely resonated with me, whilst i didn't agree with her perspectives on everything, i had a lot of empathy for her. The book really focuses on her and the relationships she has with her husband, children and friends and how a different perspective can make such a huge impact on the success of those relationships.
The book moves along at a great pace and i was intrigued all the way through to see what the outcome would be and it didn't disappoint. There were moments that were extremely emotional and i was overwhelmed at points with my own nostalgia regarding my marriage before our kids were born and also for when our kids were still babies. I found the book to be moving, inspiring and entertaining.
Audrey is struggling in life with her kids, her job and her marriage. In anger, she asks her husband for a break. During this time, she falls down the stairs and slips back to her past life. However knowing what happens she can see the situations differently, and realizes that her life is the result of her narrow perspective. Barrow creates a relatable protagonist in Audrey. She is struggling with the mental load that most women face. Her exhaustion is real and frustrating. I particularly enjoyed the slip portion of her life and her awareness that some of the problems she encountered were of her own making. These experiences allowed her to open up and accept accountability in her current life. Barrow must be a dog person because her scene with Willow, Audrey’s beloved dog, were touching.
Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC!
This was a cute time slip romance, where the main characters get a second chance to make things work. Balancing marriage, kids and work can be hard but sometimes it just takes a different perspective to see what is really going on! I liked Audrey and Travis and was rooting for them.
I think anyone living the daily grind can appreciate this book. I gave it 3.75 stars.
Laura Barrow’s *The Marriage Slip* offers a deeply emotional and engaging journey that touches on themes of love, regret, and the hope for second chances—particularly resonant for those who enjoy pondering “what if” scenarios. At the heart of the story is Audrey, a dedicated real estate agent and mother who finds herself at a crossroads in her marriage. After a fall down the stairs, she mysteriously transports five years into the past, presenting her with an unexpected opportunity to reconsider her life choices.
This premise beautifully intertwines the elements of wish-fulfillment with real-life complexities. Barrow skillfully uses the time-slip to delve into profound emotions like trust, forgiveness, and the journey toward self-discovery. As Audrey revisits the joys and challenges of early motherhood, alongside her loving dog Willow, the emotional stakes become even more palpable and relatable.
It’s important to acknowledge that Audrey and Travis, despite their struggles, are portrayed with authenticity. Their communication challenges can be exasperating at times, prompting a desire for them to take a step back and truly understand each other. Yet, this very messiness makes them feel real and relatable. They are flawed and their journey is not always straightforward, but their growth throughout the story is ultimately rewarding. Lexie, with her vibrant personality, brings a chaotic energy that is impossible to overlook and adds another layer to the narrative.
While *The Marriage Slip* may not be without its imperfections, it effectively balances emotional depth with romantic tension. It thoughtfully examines the influence we have over our lives and poses the question of whether we might choose differently if given the chance to rewrite our stories.
**Perfect for fans of**: *The Midnight Library*, *Maybe in Another Life*, and domestic fiction infused with a touch of magical realism.
