On the cold streets of a bustling city, a homeless man notices something strange—an invisible gap between a bakery and a bookstore, a space no one else seems to see. People slip into it and vanish, but every time he tries to approach, his own mind forces him away.
Until one day, he fights through the unseen force and steps through the door.
What he finds is beyond imagination—an inn filled with magic, where food appears with a snap of fingers, where warmth and wonder replace the bitter chill of the streets. But he doesn’t belong here. Logically, he shouldn’t even be able to step inside.
And yet, he has.
Offered a chance to stay, he must prove his worth in a world that defies everything he’s known. But as he carves out a place for himself, his very existence challenges an age-old that magic and non-magic should never mix.
A heartwarming and enchanting tale of resilience, discovery, and the power of second chances, The Space Between is perfect for fans of The Night Circus, Legends & Lattes, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.
I stumbled across this short story tucked away on the author’s website. To find it, I had to subscribe and unlock a kind of secret library—like a hidden treasure chest of fantasy tales. I downloaded the story to my phone, and there are a few more gems waiting in that library too.
This piece really stayed with me. More than the plot itself, it was Sarah Ishi’s voice that turned me into a fan—her writing is lush, full of imagery, and so beautifully expressive. It’s one of the most vivid short works I’ve read in a while, and it left me hungry for more.
Now I’m eagerly awaiting her upcoming release, Iron Angels. From what I’ve seen, it promises to be very different in style and theme from Origin Curse, and I can’t wait to experience that shift in her storytelling.
