The Hyperspace series of comics continues, with this collection gathering issues #1-#5 of the Bad Batch set. As Hyperspace comics go, this one is quite a bit better than many of the other installments.

Story: Set in the time of Clone Wars, the Bad Batch is sent by Mace Windu to retrieve a list of hidden Republic operatives before they are compromised. Our clones follow a thief through a series of events in pursuit of another masked thief, with Aurra Sing who is out to eliminate the targets on said list.

I feel the Bad Batch works great for a side story. Just like in the TV series, the story can revolve around smaller stakes and keep things fresh. Everything in Star Wars does not need to thread the same places and tie into the main plot somehow, the fringes can be just as interesting. As such, this story perfectly suits Bad Batch. It's also interesting to see how our clones worked while during the Clone Wars as operatives.

In addition to a strong story, I like the art in this one as well a bit more than the other Hyperspace comics I've read. It probably helps that the Bad Batch are originally animated so a comic rendition feels accurate, but all the other art is fine as well.

A few minor gripes: the involvement of Windu - I always assumed Bad Batch was a bit of a side group and not ones who would be engaged by the Jedi Council directly. Also, the identity of the thief makes some of the events in Bad Batch season 3 a bit weird.

Highly recommended if you were a fan of Bad Batch - you will feel right at home. If you simply enjoy Star Wars comic at large you should like this one, it is definitely among the better ones. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

As the Clone Wars rage the soldiers of Clone Force 99 AKA the Bad Batch are given a special assignment by General Mace Windu. A list of Republic double agents has been stolen and the Bad Batch have to track it and the thief down before those agents are killed. Their mission will lead them directly into conflict with the likes of Embo, Aurra Sing and Asajj Ventress.

When the Bad Batch first appeared in The Clone Wars, I didn't actually like them very much. However, their subsequent spinoff series (particularly the third season) is some of the best Star Wars animation produced and I very much came around as a fan.
It has to be said, however, that the Bad Batch featured in this book are very much the Clone Wars versions of the characters and haven't yet developed the depth and complexity that they do in their own series.

Truth be told, this is a pretty straightforward book, with enough of a plot to lead you from start to finish, but nothing that could really be construed as a surprise or an original element. Even things like the identity of the supposedly-mysterious thief will be immediately identifiable to anyone with even a passing knowledge of The Clone Wars.

It won't rock your world, but this is a perfectly fine mini-adventure for Clone Force 99.

This was a fun little story and anything with the Bad Batch is a win. I especially liked the inclusion of Embo and Ventress, though her being the antagonist was kind of funny because they had to maneuver around actually having them meet face to face Anakin and Grievous style thanks to season three establishing that they don't recognize her but I love her so I'm not complaining :P

The only thing I really have to complain about is that Tech's manner of speech wasn't captured and since that's one of his defining traits he seemed weirdly out of character.
Examples from the text being okay and maybe instead of very well and perhaps which are way more in character.
He also doesn't really use contractions in most situations so rather than "You're correct." it would be "You are correct." and can't would become cannot.

But other than that THANK YOU for continuing to feed us Bad Batch fans lol, I'm looking forward to reading Rogue Agents and hopefully more Bad Batch Hyperspace Stories down the road (or their own run would be awesome!).

SIDE NOTE: Can we please see Echo again soon because he wasn't in this or Sanctuary and he's not supposed to be in Rogue Agents and I miss him :(

Was pretty disappointed in this one.

The art is great. I had not complaints there. Even the overall premise is fun... I have no issue getting more from the Bad Batch, especially during the Clone Wars.

The story just did not catch me at all. There were a lot of cop-outs that bothered me. How exactly is Tech hacking a list? What are the extent of Tech's abilities? Why is Ventress' identity kept secret for basically no reason until the final issues? Why does Aurra Sing bring the list with her so that it can be easily stolen off of her? Just weird choices that I felt could have used another writing pass.

The potential is certainly there. I am hopeful the next mini will avoid the pitfalls in this one and capitalize on the strengths.

10/10:
This genuinely felt like an episode or two of Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021-2024), and that’s awesome! The artwork is incredible, the story is solid and feels meaningful, and I really felt like we got to see these Clones go through some of their chaotic moments of the Clone Wars!

Watching the Bad Batch go up against Embo, Aurra Sing, and Asajj Ventress? Give me more!
