I was so excited to get back into this series! These are all interconnecting stories, with various characters, but I REALLY missed Josh! I was almost desperate to find out what happened to him after the end of the last Curse of the Arcadian Stone. His memory loss is still very much in place, he's back in Arcadia, the woman he loves is engaged to another. And her memory of previous encounters, of knowing Josh, has been lost ...Which sets the stage for some very...interesting... dialogue. I absolutely adore Josh, he wears his heart on his sleeve, his confusion at what he's feeling, what he's missing, is messing with his head. Big time. And mine. And I feel his pain in my bones! But he's hilarious at the same time. Although some of his memories have been erased, his conviction that he loves Tala is undeterable, he just KNOWS and is not shy to tell everyone and anyone that he loves her. She refuses to give him her name, and, when she does, oh glory do I love his reaction! Lest you aren't 100% sure, I ADORE Josh! He's so nice, so sweet, so confused, so, shoot, awesome! His love for Tala defies logic and he's all about logic. I got all gooey with this thought "the sound of her laughter was sunlight breaking through storm clouds—warm, golden, and impossibly tender, like the world itself paused to listen".
And then there's the confusion Tala is suffering from. While Josh is adamant they knew each other, adamant he's been in Arcadia before, she "knows" this isn't the case, I mean, no one remembers him... Through her guilt at what Josh's role is to fulfill the prophecy, she can't help feeling "something" more for Josh, which is as ludicrous as it is impossible. All her attempts to keep him secluded, keep him under lock and key, fail. Dismally. Josh gets out every time. One thing she IS certain of, Josh is her "odd, human ‘trouble magnet’" He definitely does attract a lot of the unforeseen! I so loved seeing her unravel, seeing her try to process duty over feelings.
At around halfway through the book, Tala realised something of mammoth proportion, Josh was important to her, as ill fated as that was. But, with the prophecy, with her imminent nuptials, it was out of her hands. The tension, and not just the romantic kind, escalated exponentially from this point on and by the time I got to the last few chapters, I felt as though my heart was in a vice, squeezing tighter with each page read. I was in agony... Which is precisely what this author does with her storytelling, she allows me to dip their toes into a calm sea, content, at peace, relishing the lapping of her prose, and then, she slowly draws the tide in, trapping me with ginormous action, and I realise I'm panicking. And I had cause to panic! Like OMG cause! Brilliantly crafted, each event, each happening, each utterance, all are meticulously crafted. As is the plot and heavens is the world building superb! I hear, see, smell and feel absolutely everything!
These books are set in the same world but in different timelines. There's portal magic, and timeline manipulation, which caused all the confusion. And when it all came together, this timeline converges with past timelines, spectacularly! And no matter which timeline, Magenta/Freyjn/Tala and Josh are inevitably drawn to one another. These books are very quirky, I adore the humour mixed with the drama, mixed with the action, mixed with prophecy, mixed with the romance. Ms Breaker brings me into her story, effortlessly, and took me on another wild ride with her enthralling storytelling. By the time I got to the end of the book, I could barely contain myself, I was doing a happy jig, all while fist pumping and shouting, "yes, yes, yes, yes, you beaut!" directed solely at this author, for her ingenious plot, and ending, which filled every crevice in me with joy! I truly love this series. I truly, desperately hope we'll get more of this spectacular cast and world!
