Michael Lawson was raised in Pueblo, Colorado and attended college at Seattle University, receiving a degree in engineering. On leaving college he went to work for the US Navy as a nuclear engineer, spending approximately thirty years working for the Navy's nuclear power program. Some of this time was spent in Washington D.C. but most was spent at a large naval shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.
At the shipyard he managed a number of different organizations related to overhauling nuclear powered submarines, cruisers, and aircraft carriers, ending up as a member of the government’s Senior Executive Service
To date he has published 12 books starring Joe DeMarco, a fixer for a corrupt politician and three books in his Kay Hamilton series under the name of M. A. Lawson: He has won the Friend of Mystery Award twice and is a five time nominee for the Barry Award.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Mike Lawson, and Grove Atlantic for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
After discovering the work of Mike Lawson years ago, I am always excited to read one of his political thrillers. The novels are filled with great storylines and puts Joe DeMarco into the middle of the action. After a suspected child trafficker is killed in his mansion, the case against him stops in its tracks. However, a note appears in the Natuonal Archives that suggests someone in the West Wing might have played a role in silencing the man before he could spill the beans. Enter Joe DeMarco, whose work as a fixer for the former Speaker of the House has many whispering. DeMarco is asked to investigate and potentially bring down the one man who cannot be touched. Lawson delivers another wonderful thriller for all to enjoy!
Brandon Cartwright had a great deal of money and knew how to use it. He was a party guy and found ways to ensure that his guests never left unhappy. Rumours abounded about what happened at those parties, which came to light when Cartwright was arrested for child trafficking, after a girl of fifteen went to the authorities to say that she had been used by Cartwright for sex at numerous of his soirées.
When news emerged that Brandon Cartwright was gunned down in his mansion, the case stopped dead in its tracks. The house was ransacked but many things of value were left lying around. Everyone presumed this was the end of it all, though a piece of writing that ended up in the possession of the National Archives points the finger to a connection between Cartwright and the sitting US president. This secretive intel lands in the lap of former Speaker of the House, John Mahoney, who quickly passes it off to his fixer, Joe DeMarco.
At question here is just how close were Cartwright and the president. Might there have been a plan hatched in the West Wing to silence Brandon Cartwright so that he did not spill anything on POTUS? This is the motivation DeMarco has, as he turns over every rock to follow the trail. What he discovers keeps him searching.
All the while, someone is less than impressed with DeMarco’s determination and seeks to quiet the man before he, too, can discover the connection. There may be a level of untouchability to the sitting US president, but DeMarco has always been driven by answers, not the narrow framework of the law. Mike Lawson delivers a great thriller that had me flipping pages just to get some answers of my own.
I have always enjoyed the writing of Mike Lawson, who knows how to mix politics and a thriller effectively. The story blossoms from the outset and has eerie parallels to something Epstein-esque with a peppering of Gaetz and perhaps the untouchable nature of the 45th US president. The story moves along with a great narrative that pulls no punches, though it increases in intensity as the momentum builds with each chapter. Strong characters, including Joe DeMarco, make for a great piece that is ever-evolving. Key plot points and parallels to actual events provide entertainment and intrigue for the attentive reader. I am eager to see where things are headed with this series and how Lawson will keep developing his DeMarco character.
Kudos, Mr. Lawson, for a great addition to the series!
Untouchable by Mike Lawson is the 18th entry in the Joe DeMarco series.
Brandon Cartwright, a very wealthy man known for hosting lavish soirées for the rich and famous has been murdered. Some of the parties were rumored to have been sex orgies, and as he was recently indicted for trafficking a minor, the assumption is made that Cartwright was killed by someone wanting to keep him quiet. The local police department wants to categorize the crime as a home invasion and be done with it.
Information has recently come to light that Cartwright was seeking a pardon from the president, something the president wasn’t willing to give. Instead, the president expected his national security adviser to handle the Cartwright situation.
Did Cartwright have something to blackmail the president with? Was the president responsible for Cartwright’s death? These are the questions Joe is tasked with finding the answers to.
As the fixer for the former Speaker of the House, Joe would rather be fixing his fence than investigating the power brokers running the country. He has a tendency to procrastinate and would agree with his sometime partner Emma that he’s lazy and unambitious. He has enough self awareness to know that if he tells you he’ll share what he’s learned, he probably won’t. His situational awareness however, is sorely lacking as he never knows when he’s being followed.
There’s a lot of ripped from the headlines moments that I wasn’t sure I wanted to relive, but Joe is a likable if reluctant hero. He’s no James Bond; he had to learn to drive a boat by watching YouTube videos.
Emma is a great asset, not only for Joe, but also the reader. A smart, no nonsense retired DIA agent, she only tolerates Joe but would help him out if she approved of what he was doing. It’s a good pairing.
The book worked as a standalone, but if you’re a fan of political thrillers, this is a good series to read. Untouchable ends with a cliffhanger, so it’ll be interesting to see how it’s resolved in #19.
My thanks to Grove Atlantic/Atlantic Monthly Press and Goodreads for the advance copy of this book.
An interesting detective mystery connecting the dark world of politics with those looking for the truth. The author uses real life stories and intertwines them into the President of the United States and those who will do anything to protect them. TBH I didn’t like the ending but the plot of the book kept me on the edge of my seat
This continues to be one of my favorite book series. Joe Demarco has his flaws, but I admire his sense of self-worth, despite all the burdens placed upon him by people and events. The characters, storylines and dialogue are consistently crackling with energy and wit.
There were a lot of dry sections, mostly in the setup. Story seems to be pulled right out of the headlines for politics. There really wasn't a mystery, you were told up front what had happened so not really sure the point of the whole story.
I always enjoy the Joe DeMarco books by Mike Lawson and Untouchable is no exception. Joe, a “fixer” for a powerful congressman and (for now) former Speaker of the House, finds himself in the middle of a potential scandal that has broad implications. It’s a “ripped from the headlines” kind of story.
This book has a great plot, with a widely-varied cast of characters and bad guys. The dialogue is snappy and helps keep the reader fully engaged in the story. it’s a fast-paced thriller with lots of moving parts and it dips and dives like a rollercoaster.
I thought the first few chapters were a bit choppy, with short sentences that felt a little stilted. But, it settled down into a well-written thriller with good character development and several unexpected twists that only ramped up the story as well as the tension.
I enjoyed Untouchable and now I simply have to read Mr Lawson’s next Joe DeMarco book! NetGalley provided an advance reader copy.
I feel like this has been a theme of books I've read recently, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say that this was Demarco like we've never seen him before! The author does a great job taking real world situations and fictionalizing them just enough. In this installment, Joe remains great at getting an insider to help him out (PW County police officer in this case) but also remains TERRIBLE at knowing whether he's being followed - this is the second book in a row where he's been followed for some time without knowing it! I was VERY glad to see Emma back in this book - I felt like I was really missing her involvement in Kingpin. All in all, the author weaves a political insider conspiracy like not many other authors can. The ending without a doubt will keep you anxiously waiting for the next installment.
Thank you to NetGalley and Grove Atlantic for this advanced copy. #Untouchable #NetGalley
Untouchable is a good installment in the Joe DeMarco series by Mike Lawson. He is the ‘Fixer” for the former Speaker of the House, John Mahoney. A piece of paper is found in the National Archive that has terrible implications for those in power. Mahoney sends DeMarco to find out what is going on, and he runs into some unsavory people. He knows a lot of people who can help him and off he goes. DeMarco calls on Emily, an old friend, to help. The action never stops, and all sorts of things happen. I really enjoyed this one – this one has a lot of his friends helping him. We get to have more insight into the relationship between Mahoney and DeMarco. I really like the series, and this one did not disappoint.
“Untouchable” by Mike Lawson gets high praise for this tension filled Joe DeMarco thriller! DeMarco finds himself assigned to an impossible case which has implications to take down the president of the United States. Is it possible the president sanctioned the murder of a wealthy sex trafficker to cover up his sexual escapades? DeMarco who has made a career of hunting down the very worst people in Washington is called in to investigate a man who is literally untouchable.
This book is action packed with an unexpected cliff hanger ending. I can’t wait for the next installment.
Thank you NetGalley and Grove Atlantic for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Joe DeMarco is back in Mike Lawson's long-running series about a fixer who works for the House Minority Leader, John Mahoney. In Lawson's latest thriller, "Untouchable," Mahoney is no longer the Speaker of the House, but the old man still wields considerable power. When the head of the National Archives tells Mahoney a scandalous secret about the president of the United States, Mahoney dumps the matter in DeMarco's lap. Brandon Cartwright, a wealthy and depraved individual, regularly arranged clandestine assignations for rich and powerful people. After Cartwright is indicted, he asks the president for a pardon. Subsequently, two armed men enter Cartwright's home and execute him.
Mahoney is an alcoholic who keeps bottles of liquor at hand from morning until night. Joe's job is to do Mahoney's bidding. The tasks that Mahoney assigns DeMarco are generally unethical and often illegal. DeMarco, who is divorced and has a law degree, is by nature, neither ambitious nor energetic. However, he needs to make a living, so when Mahoney summons him, Joe puts away his beloved golf clubs and follows orders. Unfortunately, this time around, DeMarco will find himself in the crosshairs of the president's villainous national security advisor, Eric Doyle, and his pair of brutal henchmen.
Doyle uses his goons to eliminate people who know too much. When DeMarco sticks his nose into the Cartwright case, he unwittingly places the witnesses he interviews in grave danger. In addition, Joe is hardly a master strategist when it comes to evading murderous thugs. Therefore, he consults his friend, Emma, a former DIA agent, who has the expertise that Joe lacks. The first half of the book is standard thriller fare: Joe is oblivious to the fact that he is being followed; he looks for proof of the president's misdeeds; and in a stunning conclusion, tries to figure out a way to punish someone who considers himself above the law. "Untouchable" is fast-paced, humorous, suspenseful, timely, and picks up steam big-time in its mesmerizing final pages.
SUMMARY The Washington, D.C., troubleshooter Joe DeMarco is assigned an impossible task. Without their knowledge, DeMarco must investigate the President of the United States and his National Security Advisor for their association with the ultra-rich mega-doner Brendon Cartwright.
Cartwright, worth billions, is known for hosting lavish parties attended by wealthy politicians, movie stars, British royalty, and Russian oligarchs where anything goes. Recently, Cartwright was indicted for sex trafficking a minor at one of his parties. Before his trial could commence, he fell victim to a military-style execution, and his ten-thousand-square-foot home was ransacked.
Shortly after Cartwright’s death, an archivist at the National Archives discovers a shocking note on the back page of a draft of a presidential speech. The note suggested that the president might know something about Cartwright’s death. When John Mahoney, the former Speaker of the House, is shown the note, he immediately calls Joe DeMarco to discreetly investigate whether Cartwright had been blackmailing the President.
REVIEW Untouchable is a riveting and scarily realistic thriller with an unforgettable cast of characters. Joe DeMarco, as always is intriguing and fascinating. I was delighted to see the savvy and super-smart retired DIA agent Emma again joining forces with DeMarco and his stealth investigation.
Author Mike Lawson’s writing cleverly weaves gut-wrenching suspense and wry humor with great pacing. His conclusion is stunning but immensely satisfying. Overall, it is an exceptional read for lovers of action-packed political thrillers.
I received an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Publisher Grove Atlantic | Atlantic Monthly Press Published February 25, 2025 Review www.bluestockingreviews.com
Untouchable is a high-octane political thriller that masterfully blends suspense, moral complexity, and fast-paced intrigue. Edgar and Barry Award finalist Mike Lawson delivers a gripping narrative that places Washington D.C.’s most powerful figures under a microscope, while immersing readers in the shadowy, morally ambiguous world of Joe DeMarco, the city’s indispensable troubleshooter.
Joe DeMarco is a protagonist who combines intelligence, courage, and moral acuity with the grit of someone who has seen the worst of human ambition. Tasked with investigating the murder of billionaire Brandon Cartwright, DeMarco quickly finds himself entangled in a web of political power, corruption, and deadly secrets culminating in an impossible challenge: gathering evidence against the President of the United States. Lawson expertly balances the thrills of a high-stakes investigation with the emotional and ethical weight of DeMarco’s choices, creating tension that builds relentlessly throughout the novel.
The supporting cast is equally compelling, from the enigmatic John Mahoney to the sprawling network of influential figures whose secrets threaten to unravel the nation’s highest office. Lawson’s meticulous attention to detail, intricate plotting, and sharp dialogue keep readers on the edge of their seats, delivering both cinematic action and intellectual intrigue.
Untouchable is ideal for fans of political thrillers, suspenseful mysteries, and fast-paced, morally complex narratives. It is a sophisticated, pulse-pounding read that demonstrates why Mike Lawson is recognized as one of the premier voices in contemporary thriller fiction.
Spoilers ahead. I discovered Mike Lawson and the DeMarco series 1-2 years ago and binge read all of them. I generally liked them but unfortunately I think I should have read them at a slower rate than all at once.
Billed as thrillers I consider it more drama, with DeMarco being the fixer for the US Speaker of the House (Mahoney) and solving his problems. The writing is easy to read and follow and the protagonist is easy to like and that is why most people follow characters. It's a rare author who can make readers follow unlikeable protagonists. A few of the books were really good and some of them were a bit meh.
This latest offering is good. Maybe it's a bit surprising because most series hit an apex and then kinda get worse. The worst offenders are those authors who strike it big and get rich, then they don't really put in the work to make it good.
Summary: Cartwright, a pimp for the rich, famous and powerful (and his lover) are murdered at home. Mahoney (by serendipity) figures that Cartwright had supplied hookers for the President and was blackmailing the President for a pardon so he got offed. He sends deMarco to gather more info.
Doyle, the President's fixer and national security advisor who was the one who killed Cartwright is alerted that deMarco is looking into it. He puts obstacles in his way and when deMarco starts getting close, he orders a couple of his fixers to start killing witnesses. However his fixers in turn gets killed and deMarco gathers enough circumstantial evidence for Mahoney to tell the President to fire Doyle. The book ends with deMarco getting even with Doyle and finds the FBI waiting on his doorstep.
I like this book because it had a pretty good plot flowchart. It was like standing behind deMarco as he investigated the murders, followed up on clues, talked to witnesses and fought off Doyle's goons. That he delivered vigilante justice at the end is something that most people seem to get behind, in theory if not in actuality.
I waited a year for this book, I guess it will be another year before we find out what happens to deMarco.
Joe DeMarco is the fixer for former Speaker of the House John Mahoney. When a archivist at the National Archives comes across a document with notes relating to Brendan Cartwright, a billionaire who was recently indicted for sex trafficking a minor and then brutally murdered in his home. The notes are on the back of a document received from the White House and clearly in the President’s handwriting. The archivist decides to bring it to Mahoney’s attention although she won’t show the actual document to anyone. Mahoney tasks DeMarco with finding out what is going on. Without a whole lot to go on, DeMarco enlists the help of retired DIA agent Emma and the two of them begin their investigation that quickly leads them to the National Security Advisor, although they can’t talk to either the President or the NSA.
This is the 18th book in the Joe DeMarco series. It is certainly not a literary masterpiece but a fun read - as almost all of the Joe DeMarco series has been. The book is well paced, has plenty of twists and turns, is sprinkled with some humor, and has a bit of a surprise ending and the hint of things to come. My thanks to Atlantic Monthly Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel.
I've read this series from the start and have greatly enjoyed the books. Joe DeMarco is a consultant or contractor who is called on by Congressman John Mahoney periodically to serve as an investigator and fixer when there are political issues that need behind the scenes attention. Joe has become Jack Reacher-like in his skills and abilities, to the point that I spend some of the time rolling my eyes while reading (which can make reading really difficult!😆).
In this entry, Joe must find out if a recently murdered rich man (who had been accused of basically serving as a high end pimp for some politicians soon before his death) had any potential blackmail material on the president. The investigation into the man's death was a bit cursory before being shelved, but soon after Joe gets on the case, he is tailed and inadvertently puts those he was talking to in danger.
This entry is no different from others in the series, which, I guess, is why the rating is right in the middle. It's quick, easy to read. No surprises.
This book is about Joe DeMarco, a political fixer, who is asked to investigate the murder of an influential person. A wealthy playboy is murdered right after being charged with supplying a minor to powerful figures. The suspicion falls on his elite circle. With rumours that someone at the very top – possibly the President of the United States – ordered the hit. What's interesting is the sheer audacity of the premise: investigating a potentially criminal President. The story follows DeMarco's daunting task, with the narrative giving readers a broad view of the unfolding events. The author adds a darker side to DeMarco's character, and there is a scene about his father, revealing unexpected similarities between them. While the supporting characters might not be as interesting, the book delivers a thrilling cat-and-mouse game exposing deep-seated political corruption in Washington, and the shocking twists make it a compelling read that's hard to put down. Thank you for providing this book for review, Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
The ever dependable Mike Lawson gives us a new Joe DeMarco thriller. Demarco is a fixer for the John Mahoney, Former Speaker of The House, and gets all of the off the book jobs. Asked to look into something that suggests something is rotten at the very top of US Government he attracts the interest of some very dangerous people. Luckily he knows some dangerous people himself, but that might not be enough….. As usual, DeMarco ambles through things wishing he was playing golf, the story and characters happen around him. Emma, his rather talented and enigmatic friend is her usual stand out self, a brilliant character. DeMarco looks the part but usually is slightly lazy and rarely thinks outside the box, Emma however likes to kick the hornet’s nest. Topical story told with Mr Lawton’s usual character driven and observational style. I am a massive fan of all his books and he never fails to deliver, he certainly deliver here. Great stuff.
Another solid book in the political action series featuring Joe DeMarco, a “fixer” for the now former Speaker of the House. Demarco is officially a civil servant, but his real assigned work is always under the table, handling things the Speaker would just as soon keep hush-hush.
This time it’s cryptic notes written by the President that sound like threats against someone who is later found shot to death in his home. DeMarco needs to find out why the dead man would have been a threat worth killing for, and be able to prove that the National Security Adviser had a hand in it.
The body count starts adding up, DeMarco gets his friend and retired super spy, Emma, involved, and does some soul searching about his late father, who was a fixer for the mob. Recommended to readers who’ve been following the series, and those who haven’t tried the author but enjoy this genre should start anywhere in the series.
This is another good Mike Lawson thriller. Now, I hope the library has his latest release, 'Ella.' I would have ordered it already, but that one slipped past me. As far as 'Untouchable' goes, it's a good read. I enjoyed it. I'm about to contact Mike Lawson because I'm left with feelings I don't like about the ending. Is this the end for DeMarco or the beginning of another Lawson thriller? He and I need to have a chat. I was just looking over our past conversation about one of his earlier books, "The Second Parameter," because it coincided with real-world events. I think that was a much faster-paced book, but every book I have read from Mike Lawson has been a winner. Maybe it helps that we have somewhat similar career paths. But if you haven't read Mike Lawson and if you like John Grisham and Brad Meltzer, then do yourself a favor and pick up anything Mike has written. He's that good and very well suited to be featured on Goodreads!
Untouchable is one of those thrillers where things do not stop happening and the reader just wants to learn where they'll take them. There is a good plot, although it reminded me a lot about the information released on the Jeffrey Epstein's case, and Joe is sent for the wrong motives to search for the truth regarding Cartwright's death. What Joe will discover is one wrong decision/crime after another in which he and those who'll eventually help him will be running for their lives. He'll also think a lot about his father and the motives that led him to be a killer for the mafia, Joe considers himself totally different from his dad, but is he really? Untouchable is an easy and engaging read that besides crime, describes how power , greed, lust, affects people. Great entertainment! I thank Mr. Lawson, his publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.
This is the first Joe DeMarco book I’ve read by Mike Lawson. I received an advanced readers copy from Grove Atlantic, through Goodreads.
This book was full of plot twists that made it hard to put the book down. Honestly, the best part was realizing that I could easily imagine this story happening in real life. I thoroughly enjoyed the action and I was anticipating how Joe DeMarco was going to solve the problem thrown his way. The ending was not what I expected and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. But first, I plan on finding the other books, now that I’m hooked on reading the Joe DeMarco series. Thank you for the opportunity to provide an honest and unbiased review. I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you’re interested in political thrillers.
If you follow Lawson's character Joe DeMarco this is another very well written story of Joe DeMarco being Joe DeMarco our intrepid lawyer detective and a surprising ending!
This is a fast read with a good story, great characters we know and a few new folks too. It's like seeing family members you haven't seen in a year reading this book. With a touch more violence than Joe normally gets in most of the books.
Now I must wait (probably a year) for the next DeMaraco tale! If you like a smart mouth, wise ass, lazy lawyer who is stuck working for a political blowhard for a boss, you are going to love this book! enjoy, I did!
Former Majority Speaker Mahoney is contacted by the head of the National Archives with information about the recent death of Billionaire Brandon Cartwright. The inference is that the President & his national security advisor are involved.
Of course he calls his go-to fixer Joe DeMarco to get evidence to prove what is very slim information but the more he digs, the more he finds. With the assistance of friend, ex DIA agent Emma, they find more than they bargained for but what will Mahoney do with the info?
The storyline is plucked from the recent Epstein headlines and totally believable.
Initially and for a good portion of the book I was a disappointed. As a huge fan of the series and anxiously awaiting every new publication it seemed like Mr Lawson was just mailing it in with a cheap political hit job trying to tie a president to a pedophile and his female facilitator, you can easily fill in the names of the actual people. It made up to a 3 star mostly because of the ending and DeMarco taking things into his own hands and tying in more then usual the references to his father. It will be interesting to see how this transfers to future books.
I really enjoyed this book! 📚 Even though it had a few weaker moments, overall it kept me hooked. At times, the author seemed to develop the secondary characters more than the main one, which slightly shifted the focus. This is probably because the novel is part of a longer series – revisiting familiar characters can be refreshing, but here it felt a bit overdone.
That being said, the plot was dynamic, suspenseful, and held my attention until the very end. 🔥 I also feel like this book is underrated and deserves more recognition. I’ll definitely be picking up more from Mike Lawson! 🙌
Pure Joe DeMarco. This is what you came for, and this is what you get. Loved it.
Of particular note about this book is that Lawson flips the trope of the action hero working directly for the President (or the President's right hand man) to save the world from whatever existential threat the red tape and bureaucracy can't handle. Here, those characters are the bad guys. Well meaning, but misinformed and dangerous. Nice one!
This is one of those series that never disappoints...good characters (both the ones that are always part of each story and those he adds in for each new adventure). Joe Demarco...himself a really good main character with all the strengths and weaknesses that all individuals have...a regular guy who gets strange assignments that stretch him.
This one is has a little more violence than normal, but as is the case with each installment, it's well written and never goes too far.
Literally one of my top favorite series of all time. Read this book within a few days as I couldn't put it down. Left off with a real cliffhanger and since this author only writes one of these a year it's gonna be a long year wondering what's gonna happen next. LOL Note to anyone wanting to read this series, you do NOT have to read them in order but it does allow for a more coherent storyline if you do.
