Appalachian humor can be dry, colorful, and earthy. The chapters vary greatly ranging from topics of Love and Marriage; Schools, Religion; Lawyers; Mountaineers and the Law; Animals and Hunting; Mountaineers and City Folks; Health and Medicine; and Rural Life. In C uring the Cross-Eyed Mule , songwriter Billy Edd Wheeler and folklorist Loyal Jones have combined to give you the biggest serving of Appalachian mountain humor since their bestselling Laughter in Appalachia .
Curing the Cross-Eyed Mule: Appalachian Mountain Humor by Loyal Jones and Billy Edd Wheeler (August House Publishers 2005) (817.008) contains 450 of the worst mountain jokes and stories that I've ever heard. I hate this because it's going to make the flatlanders think that we are boring. My rating: 4/10, finished 2005.
Funny. I didn’t actually finish it. I was a few pages short. It was in an Airbnb in Glenville NC. Wasn’t worth stealing it to finish. Was worth reading while I was there though.
Reading this book reminded me of sitting around the television and watching HeeHaw back in the 70's. That is the kind of humor this is. Some of the jokes were corny, some left me scratching my head, and others were down right funny.
I was expecting more from this book. It does have a few funny little stories of hillbilly humor, but overall, they are few and far between. I'd pass this book by.
some of the joke were good, I've heard other. i was expecting to be laughing a little more than i was. maybe i just am not as easily amused as i need to be.
