This is a story that runs the full gambit of emotions of laughter, drama and sadness as you witness greedy people and corporations going to great extents to to make money off fossil fuels by destroying the land or in this case, even people to get what they want. Three young boys watch everything unfold as they grow up being mischievous boys.
Enjoyed reading the tales of the boys. Was able to picture the story quite well based on the details. Book needs some grammatical fixes. Overall a good story.
The style of writing was different from what I was used to. The story seemed disjointed, however, it gave the sensation that I was being told the story. I would imagine that the mountain people's history would be passed down as an oral history. So even though I wasn't used to the style of writing, it worked for this story. I loved how the scenery was described. It was beautiful and whimsical. The boys were entertaining and they were a wonderful break from the tragedy of the community. The key parts of the story left me confused. I couldn't understand the motives of the sheriff or the deputies. I found the explanation dissatisfying. I hold my villains in high esteem, so this part was a disappointment. Which is why I rate this 3 out of 5 stars.
update: This is based on a true story. Which makes the story all the more tragic!
At the risk of stealing one of the writers favorite words, all I can say I "wow." The visuals that the writer portrays makes me feel like I was right there growing up with him. You could see the rolling hills and trees going up to the sky as you read. The tragedy that unfolds is heartbreaking, and actually makes your heart hurt for the Fergusons. And the antics of the 3 young boys had me in stitches laughing especially with Miss Jeans "big round butt in the air." What an amazing read! Your 8.5 just went to a 10! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Great book all the tragedy that the family went thru was heart breaking. the descriptions of the surroundings is dead on I can picture everything in my head.
