Gripping
I really enjoyed the book from beginning to end - the quick shift of scenes and location adding to the colour of the tale.

Simon has been in hiding for nine years. Someone--probably someone working for the British spy agency employing Simon, tried to kill him. And did succeed in killing his wife. So Simon has been licking his wounds while staying off the agency's radar. Nearly everyone thinks he's dead.
Except Madeleine. Once a bigwig in the agency and Simon's mentor, she was forced to resign in disgrace after the attempt on Simon's life. Now she runs her own commercial spy operation.
When three world leaders convene to advocate for legalization of drugs to stop the violence, one of them is assassinated. The agency works with Madeleine's company to find out who did it and to keep the other two alive. She immediately thinks of Simon because she believes the assassin may be the same man who killed Simon's wife.
Simon is antsy, bored. Ready to be drawn back into the game. If he can get revenge for his wife's death, so much the better. Before he even comes out of hiding, though, another attempt is made to kill him.
It seems whoever is behind the assassination is someone in Madeleine's confidence. Someone in the agency.
And Simon may have to be the bait to draw him out.
Good read. Reminds me of the older, more nuanced spy novels.

Rogue Elements, Hector Macdonald’s latest novel, is a Post-Snowden spy
thriller dealing with the war against drugs. When a reforming politician is assassinated, a cast of brilliant outsiders or “rogue elements” are swept into the action. These include a disgraced spymaster, Madeleine Wraye, her protege, Simon Arkell, a ruthless Israeli hit man, Yadin, and a New York teen hacker called Danny. Fast-paced, global, edgy and utterly compelling, it kept me up late for all the right reasons. Suspense combines with topical engagement which absorbs and challenges on critical contemporary themes
such as the legalization of class-A drugs and the role of the intelligence agencies in an increasingly complex digital world. I loved it and recommend it as the perfect summer read.

This is the second novel by Macdonald that I've read. I really enjoyed it. It definitely had a John le Carre feel to it, and I found myself getting a "The Night Manager" sort of vibe with this one, but that was totally fine by me. I like Hector's writing style and the way he treats his characters. I thoroughly enjoyed Macdonald's "The Mind Game" which I read about a year ago.

Not great. okay. Some bla bla bla between hired gun and woman in distress, not convincing. Nor interesting. Some movie action script setpieces instead of book setpieces.
