[Slight Spoilers] Rough start but decent first book
I'll try to keep it vague to avoid spoiling too much... I realize this is a first book so it is hard to gauge how the series will be in the long run and leans a bit heavily on tropes, but overall I enjoyed it. The beginning was a bit too mopey for me and I worried I'd have to drop it before finishing, but once you get past the setup it develops well enough. I didn't mind the "hard worker that fails to grow until x reveals his immense power" trope. I don't mind some of the other characters not supporting him or following him "because they see his hard work" because that trope is a bit overplayed. However, when basically EVERY other character acts like a heel towards him you start to wonder if he simply has a victim complex coloring his perception or if he has done something to deserve it. Either way not great. Hopefully their will be more positive relationships in the future which did seem to be developing towards the end. I look forward to the next book.
It is very dark and I loved that the MC was a total ass since the beginning but I wish the MC had just killed whoever he wanted revenge on.
I did not like the whole keeping the hostages for "soul eating". And all the sexualization of females. It needs to be marked as HAREM. I felt those characters were a waste of space and unnecessary; the story, which was a great idea, just crashed and burned. I wish the story focused more on vengeance and killing monsters to gain power. Rather than a poor adventure story with sex.
Dropping the series. Not what I expected. On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
