Yes, dear friends, we are sitting with a book at the end of the world. And in this (post)reading and writing age, we have a man embodying this moment. Chris Stanley. He is explaining how to write a 'mini book' in 7 days.
He doesn't know what he doesn't know. He does not activate the history of the chapbook, or the short books that have been published by Penguin, Springer, Palgrave and Stanford University Press - to name a few fine publishers for divergent writing modes. Short books have been written for centuries. There is no awareness of this history presented in this book.
Instead, we have a 14,000 word 'book' written around the terms What, Who, When, Where, Why, and How. Stanley has confirmed opinion and experience, rather than knowledge and expertise.
He has also confused writing with producing clean and engaging prose. Really basic editing errors remain in this 'book.' It is badly written. A shopping list of a book.
The usual 'stuff' is here: building a coaching business or writing a 'course' (!!!) from a 'minibook.'
The last thing we need is low-quality books, solving silly problems for people who need to stop watching TikTok videos.
There is exploitation of readers here. This book does not even feature professional sentence construction or paragraphing. And there are lots of headings and bullet points to 'puff out' the length of the book.
We live in an era of pretenders. This book aims to increase the number of pretenders, and move readers from engaging with knowledge to scrolling through a vibe.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Author took out all the fluff. Gave you the straight to the point, what you need to actually write your book. Yup, short, sweet, and to the point. I’d highly recommend this book for those pondering or desire to write but are stuck.
I’m starting to write my first book using what I’ve learned here. Everything isn’t earth shattering, but it’s compiled Ina way that makes it easy to understand and execute.
I liked that the writing style was simple and down to earth. It's kind of like a book within a book. Made me want to start writing my book immediately!
Practical, pragmatic and helpful book that gives you a clear roadmap on how to write a mini book. Totally worth the read. Will be recommending to other non fiction authors.
